Abstract

The introduction of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education has been so rapid that debates around its ethics, prevalence, reliability, and best practices continue to arise. The purpose of this study is to analyze perceptions of selected Filipino students towards generative AI in five major aspects: perceived risks and ethical issues, prevalence and acceptance, level of trust, current and intended use, and need for restriction. Building on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study investigates the influence of perceived usefulness, ethical implications, and trust on students' acceptance and use of generative AI within the context of their studies. Data were collected from 717 Filipino students using a quantitative, descriptive-correlational research design. The findings indicate that 95% of respondents use generative AI tools, with ChatGPT being the most frequently used. These students see the relevance and value of AI in improving tasks related to academic work, but they also express apprehensions in terms of academic integrity, misuse, and ethical risks. The researchers performed correlation analyses that showed perceived risk is significantly associated with perceived need for restrictions, perceived trust is significantly related to the acceptance of AI, and acceptance of AI is significantly associated with usage. The strong correlation between trust and the need for restrictions indicates that even those who trust AI recognize that ethical safeguards are needed. This study highlights the importance of AI literacy, ethical regulations, and clearly defined institutional policies in promoting AI advantages and maintaining academic integrity. Of particular interest are the implications of the findings for anyone who directly or indirectly contributes to shaping the integration of responsible AI in education systems, including teachers, policymakers, and institutions. Future studies could investigate AI use in the present and how regulations of AI will affect students and educators in the long term in academia.
