He received the MS and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. From 1991 to 1994, he performed post-doctoral research in modeling and processing of high-speed bipolar transistors with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada. While with the University of Waterloo, he also did research on amorphous silicon TFTs. From July 1994 to December 1995, he was initially with the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, and then joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India, where he became an Associate Professor in July 1997 and a Full Professor in January 2005. His research interests are in VLSI device modeling and simulation for nanoscale applications, integrated-circuit technology, and power semiconductor devices. He has published extensively in the above areas with more than 115 publications in refereed journals and conferences and has filed five patent applications. His teaching has often been rated as outstanding by the Faculty Appraisal Committee, IIT Delhi.Dr Kumar is a Fellow of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), India. He has been awarded the 29th IETE Ram Lal Wadhwa Gold Medal for distinguished contribution in the field of semi-conductor device design and modeling. He is an editor of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. He is also on the editorial board of (i) Recent Patents on Nanotechnology, (ii) Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and (iii) IETE Journal of Research as a subject area Honorary Editor for Electronic Devices and Components. He has reviewed extensively for different journals including IEEE Trans on Electron Devices, IEEE Trans on Device and Materials Reliability, IEE Proc on Circuits, Devices and Systems, Electronics Letters and Solid-state Electronics. He was Chairman, Fellowship Committee, The Sixteenth International Conference on VLSI Design, January 4–8, 2003, New Delhi, India. He was Chairman of the Technical Committee for High Frequency Devices, International Workshop on the Physics of Semiconductor Devices, December 13–17, 2005, New Delhi, India.

He was a Junior Engineer in the AC Spark Plug Division of General Motors from 1962 until 1964, at which time he came to the David Taylor Model Basin as an Electrical Engineer in the Industrial Department. He is currently Supervisory Engineer for Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Structures Department, Naval Ship Research and Development Center. His field of specialization is Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Data Collection Systems, Computer Applications to Structural Research, and Hydraulic System Design. He received his BTech degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1985. He received the MS and the PhD degrees, both in Electrical Engineering, respectively, from the University of Calgary, Canada and the University of California, San Diego. He joined the IIT, Bombay in 1990 as an Assistant Professor and is currently serving as a professor. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany during the summer of 1996. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany and the IETE, India. He is the coauthor of the-book ‘Depth from defocus: a real aperture imaging approach’, published by Springer, NY. He is the editor of the book ‘super-resolution imaging’ published by Kluwer Academic. Bis research interests include image processing, computer vision and multimedia.

YangMei Yang received her Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Dallas in August 2003. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Before she joined UNLV, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Columbus State University from August 2003 to August 2004. Her current research interests include computer architectures, networking, and embedded systems.L. WangLing Wang received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA, in 2003. In 2004, she joined the faculty of the College of Computer Science and Technology at Harbin Institute of Technology as Associate professor. Her primary interests are in VLSI design and various aspects of computer-aided design, and network-on-chip.

The IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Joint Section Chapter of the Kolkata section and the Guwahati subsection was inaugurated on 21 September 2022 at the Electronics and Electrical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, India. The programme was held in hybrid mode. Prof. Sanjib Kumar Panda, an associate professor and area director of power and energy research at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, also the coordinator, IEEE PELS Asia Pacific Region (R10) inaugurated the new Chapter. Chair of the IEEE Guwahati subsection, Prof. Sukumar Nandi, a professor of computer science engineering at IIT Guwahati was also present to grace the occasion. The inauguration ceremony was attended by approximately total 60 persons including faculty and student members (the photo was taken after the inauguration as shown in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Figure 1</xref> ). Prof. Panda explained in details about the organization of IEEE and the Power Electronics Society, and its various activities and programmes. He specifically explained benefits of joining IEEE and PELS membership to student members.

The IEEE's Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee and Educational Activities Board (EAB) are teaming up to provide universities with hands-on projects designed to encourage women to pursue degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. The IEEE initiative aims to change the way engineering is taught by introducing practical projects in freshman classes. It calls on the IEEE to work with educators to develop hands-on projects and online workshops for freshmen. The initiative also calls for developing online workshops that showcase the best teaching practices found in electrical and computer engineering and computer science classrooms. The goal is to develop educational strategies that focus on the learner rather than on just the concept being taught, an approach known as learner-centered teaching. Other educational strategies include those focused on students working on team projects.

The paper covers the ways of building foreign language competence of students majoring in electrical engineering in the process of their vocational training. The purpose of the article is the practical substantiation of the process of forming the future energy engineers’ foreign languagecompetence by means of project technology and carrying out diagnostic measures to check its effectiveness in foreign language learning. The methods used in this research are theoretical (analysis, comparison, systematization, generalization), empirical research methods (observations, surveys, pedagogical experiment), and statistical (non-parametric Pearson's criterion.). The results. The efficiency of project technology in the indicated process has been substantiated. A number of factors that determine the choice of such a learning technology has been specified, namely they are the following: student-oriented approach, foreign language learner autonomy, building project-oriented skills in specialty metalanguage, relationship between project work as a form of performing educational assignments and types of engineering activity. Author’s definition of project technology has been provided. By this notion a system of active and practical methods of learner-centered education aimed at programmed organization of students’ project activity, creation of educational projects that involve developing skills of independent knowledge acquisition, their practical handling, development of critical and creative thinking and key competences, is meant. The efficiency of project technology in the educational process has been experimentally verified by the example of developing foreign-language competence of students doing Master’s degree in electrical engineering. In order to determine the efficiency of project technology in the process of foreign language teaching to students in the master’s programme compared to traditional teaching methods, control groups and experimental groups with such attributes as reproductive properties, constructability and creativity were formed. Foreign language competence forming according to motivational, communication, professional, projecting and performance indicators was implemented in the process of executing profession-oriented projects. In order to assess the results of future power engineers’ project work, 100-point scale was developed. Conclusions. According to the results of the performed project work, it was determined that the level of foreign language competence in the experimental groups was higher than the one in the control groups. Generalized maturity indices of motivational, communication, professional, projecting and performance components in the control groups and in the experimental groups differed significantly. Group inhomogeneity and the significant differences were confirmed with the help of statistical non-parametric Pearson’s test χ². The obtained results of the pedagogical experiment have proved the efficiency of the suggested project technology and its rationale for implementing in the process of future electric power engineers’ foreign language teaching.
