Abstract

The most optimum modulation/demodulation scheme is discussed for optical inter-orbit link application. The theoretical and experimental analyses of noise characteristics are performed for a high power operated erbium doped optical fiber amplifier (EDFA). Improvements in sensitivity of intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) system and coherent system adopting high power optical fiber amplifiers are estimated by numerical analyses and experiments. The superior characteristics of coherent communication systems are shown in low bit error rate (BER) but highly-sensitive transmission under severe amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise.
