Historical perspective

Enterprise systems (ES) are industry-specific, customizable software packages that integrate information and business process in organizations. Despite the advantages associated with implementing ES, their success has been mixed. This has attracted the interest of researchers and resulted in a proliferation of literature on implementation. However, the extant ES studies lack a theoretical framework for the examination of ES use and its implications for change in organizations. We seek to bridge this research gap by proposing a theoretical framework for change induced through ES use. This paper contributes to theory in two areas. First, by analytically separating the notions of structure, institution, and organization, we illustrate a consistent application of Giddens' structuration theory to ES use. Second, we develop a structurational model of ES-induced change that explicates the relationship between specific characteristics of ES and the nature of change occasioned through their use by human agents within a historically shaped organizational context. Towards this objective, we distinguish ES from other information systems. Implications for practitioners and researchers are presented.

Significant stochastic dependencies in process models

The lack of effective controls over organizational business processes can cause serious consequences for a company's reputation and even jeopardize its existence. There is a need for continuous monitoring of controls and systematic collection and evaluation of relevant data. Compliance management is essential for ensuring that organizational business processes and supporting information system are in compliance with laws, regulations, and various legislative or technical documents pertaining to the place of business. The focus of this chapter is to provide an insight into compliance management and discuss the integration and automation of compliance management in service-driven computing. The chapter elaborates conceptual models for specifying compliance requirements originating from various sources and details aspects such as multi-view process modeling annotated with compliance requirements, annotation of service interfaces and behavioral characteristics, development and reuse of compliant process fragments, architectural patterns to simplify compliance management, and abstract frameworks to ensure compliance in the context of service-driven computing through service adaptation and runtime governance. Finally, approaches to automating compliance management through formalization of compliance requirements, rule- and event-based monitoring, and integration of compliance governance systems with automated reasoning and verification tools are detailed.

Implementation of enterprise resource planning system to support business process in organization has increased rapidly. Higher education institution is one of organizations which can use enterprise resource planning system to optimize their business process. Universitas Indonesia (UI) is one of the prominent universities in Indonesia who uses enterprise resource planning system for their financial business processes, but the adoption process has not been completed until now. This happened because there are many factors that hinder enterprise resource planning system adoption at the UI. This study combines Technology, Organization, Environment framework and Iacovou model as a guideline to analyze challenges and supporting dimension in adopting enterprise resource planning system in UI. Our research found that challenges are the fact that UI usually developed their own system, lack of communication process in organization, no regulation from government about enterprise resource planning implementation in higher education, and the perceived benefits are not satisfied employees yet. Supporting factors are the existance of good information technology infrastructure, top management support, various enterprise resource planning vendor, and the benefits is slowly felt by employee.

This article describes how to embed learning within the processes of organizations. It begins by discussing traditional training and educational course development and the delivery of courses within an organizational context. It next describes how to embed learning within an organizational context – and how it differs with a traditional approach. This is followed by a description of the theoretical foundation for embedding learning within the processes of an organization. It addresses the underlying performance objectives of work and the cognitive needs of learners in an organization. Next, a section describing how to deploy supportive technology for embedding learning within the processes of organizations is presented. Finally, the implication of embedding learning within the processes of organizations is discussed.

Up to 70% of all organizational undertakings to realize information systems (IS) turn out as failures or at least flawed. This severely hampers the benefits of IS and thus the IS research disciplines must provide effective remedies. The IS and management communities have advanced practices for the development of IS, such as agile software development. However, they guide development only towards the point of delivery through a development team, while it is not their objective to harmonize the IS in its full socio-technical context of an emergent organization. There is a lack of research about how to conduct IS development in a real-use environment that changes and yet requires stability. These open issues are addressed by this work. Using a mixed-methods approach, we develop principles that support IS practitioners in maneuvering the organizational and technological development process that stretches from making design choices to managing usage of the IS to ensure fit and organizational utility. The principles are inspired by lean paradigms from management practice and regarded through the lens of affordances. This study formalizes them to guidelines for IS development; thus, we call them

Process mining uses event data recorded by information systems to reveal the actual execution of business processes in organizations. By doing this, event logs can expose sensitive information that may be attributed back to individuals (e.g., reveal information on the performance of individual employees). Due to GDPR organizations are obliged to consider privacy throughout the complete development process, which also applies to the design of process mining systems. The aim of this paper is to develop a privacy-preserving system design for process mining. The user-centered view on the system design allows to track who does what, when, why, where and how with personal data. The approach is demonstrated on an IoT manufacturing use case.

This study discuss the event drive process analysis in the retail company. Its purpose to modeling the process in these company as an alternative. The use of information systems has become an obligation for companies to survive before deciding which system to use is important to know the business processes of the company. We use the event driven process analysis to be one alternative that can be used to map the existing business model within the company. The research method consist of three phase analysis, such as modeling the existing business process, doing analysis using EPC, and then create new business process. EPC analysis has been widely used by various companies to map the business processes of the company before using the information system that will become the main program of the company. Mapping of business process on retail companies will cover from the purchase of goods from suppliers to the sale of goods to the customer. The result of this study is event driven modeling process for several business process in retail organization

This paper describes the impact of blockchain on organizations in various fields of activity. In order to describe the impact in detail and correctly, the blockchain process is described, which is divided into several stages. In addition, the architecture of the blockchain technology implementation system is displayed. Due to the fact that blockchain technology correlates with other electronic centralized systems, its distinctive features are listed. Based on these features, there is a change and simplification of business processes in organizations. However, this technology has both advantages and disadvantages which will disappear over time. There are certain requirements for the blockchain, the fulfillment of which will allow creating a working version of a decentralized system. Thus, this work confirms the pos-sibility of integrating blockchain technology into various fields of activity.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a relatively new approach to automate business processes in organizations. Practitioners have adopted it extensively, notably within the accounting discipline; however, the scientific research seems to be lagging. As a result of this, there is no clear definition or uniform understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of RPA. To close this gap, we conducted a structured and systematic literature review of published scholarly articles on RPA. We set out to identify the definition of RPA, consider its feasibility regarding implementation, outline the advantages and disadvantages, and evaluate the risks and best practices of RPA. In this paper, we show that the literature has particularly failed to discuss the quantifiable benefits of RPA. The best practices identified are especially relevant for practitioners. Based on our findings, we propose an agenda for future research on RPA.

Considering the growing competition in the market, each company strives to operate in accordance with the time in which it exists and following modern techniques of business system management. One of such techniques is manifested in designing and managing business processes in organizations. The authors investigated two groups of respondents. The first group consists of employees of different organizations in Croatia. The second group of respondents are students of higher years of economic faculties in Croatia. The perception of these two groups on the importance of the company’s business process orientation was examined. The two groups were examined for an overview of the current situation with the help of employees and the future through the prism of future employees – current students. This paper aims to assume future trends of BPO use in organizations taking into account the perception of the participants surveyed.

Creating value in each company is based on business processes in it. Their rational organization is a key factor in their transformation into a competitive advantage for the company. In order to achieve this it is necessary the business processes to be analyzed in detail, continuously optimized and effectively managed by means of combining of management methods and techniques with tools of information technology.

Workflow management is aimed at the execution of business processes within an enterprise. Workflow management systems (WfMSs) build an execution platform for business processes in organizations of any size and structure. Performance is an important criteria for the applicability of WfMSs; they have to be scalable to varying load situations. The authors present a modular logical WfMS architecture, which is the basis for configuring the WfMS according to the performance needs of the application environment. Based on this logical architecture they define a data partitioning and replication scheme which allows to replicate and distribute components of the WfMS without raising synchronization efforts. As a consequence, the proposed physical architecture provides scalability.
