Home Automation with Automatic Energy Meter Billing Using Modern Technologies

In this project Hybrid Smart Home and Prepaid Energy Meter Using GSM has been presented to adoptively reduce the Negligent and unnecessary power consumption in home. The proposed system has three main components namely Sensor Block, wireless system (GSM) and Energy meter. Microcontroller and sensor units are used to implement smart home, based on sensor outputs the electrical appliances are controlled. On the other hand, wireless modules have been used to implement the wireless system using GSM. The main goal of this system is to control home appliances by using SMS. A majority of energy providers in India are still using the traditional method of energy meter billing which is obsolete and inefficient. It requires considerable manual work, consumes time and resources. Conventional energy metering systems lack bidirectional communication. The technology of energy metering has undergone several advancements however it still has many problems such as theft of electricity, inadequate last mile connectivity, no electricity connection, distribution, and consumer-level losses, etc. This paper demonstrates the use of an innovative system which will bridge the gap between the consumer and energy provider. It includes designing a web portal providing access to the billing information. The system is a wireless Global System for Mobile communication(GSM) based energy meter which has a web interface, Internet of Things (IoT) is used for displaying details of real-time energy consumption. The proposed system does not replace the traditional meters and it can be easily interfaced with the existing energy meters. Additionally, it acts as a substitute for the former reading methods and allows global access of a present energy meter to the energy supplier and customer.

This paper discusses the Design and Implementation of a short message service (SMS) Based Home Automation system. In this work, an Arduino Uno board featuring an Atmega 328P Microprocessor is used. Other hardware components used are: Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) SIM900 module, a regulated 12V and 5Vpower supply unit, a relay board, a ULN2003 relay driver I.C, and a 16x2 LCD display unit. The software components involve the Arduino Software and the driver for the GSM SIM900 Module. The appropriate drivers were installed for the boards while the necessary libraries were included on to codes using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The 12V power supply from the power supply unit feeds the GSM Module and the relay board. The RXD pin of the SIM900 Module is connected to the TXD terminal of the Uno board. The TXD pin of the Sim900 is connected to the RXD terminal of the Uno board. The 5V power supply goes to the Arduino Uno. Thereafter, the Uno board is connected to the laptop for inclusion of appropriate libraries. Codes are uploaded and an ETISALAT Sim Card is inserted in to the GSM Module. The digital pins are configured to drive the relay board. The output terminals of the relays are set to drive the required loads in the home. The system was used to drive a 40 watts Energy saving bulb and a standing fan. It was very fast to switch on the lamp due to the strength of the Etisalat network in my office. The efficiency and reliability of the system is network dependent. Most interesting is that the lamp could be switched on or off from anywhere within the country. Design of enhanced energy meter using GSM prepaid system and protective relays

This project is developed with aims to improve home security systems available in current market. This project claims to produce a prototype camera and global system for mobile communication (GSM) interfacing system for home security surveillance. This system uses two sensors, namely ultrasonic and passive infrared receiver (PIR). The ultrasonic sensor is used to detect movement of objects and PIR function is to detect changes in temperature of human in infrared radiation. In this project, the microcontroller used is ATMega 32, where it sends data to the computer to activate the camera when the microcontroller receives signals from PIR and ultrasonic. MAX232 is used as an interface circuit connecting the microcontroller to the computer. To develop software for the control circuits, software CodeVision AVR is used because the software supports microcontroller ATMega of 32. Once the camera is activated, it will capture images of intruder and the image will be saved and sent to the mobile phone. Then the sending process will automatically operate. For the transmission of picture (MMS), the software used is ActiveXperts because they support the process of sending picture from computer to phone via GSM/GPRS modem. In carrying out this project, the mobile phone Nokia 6000 series is used as a GSM/GPRS modem. In conclusion, this system operates by detecting the entry of an intruder to home by capturing the image and data (image) which will be automatically sent to the mobile phone. Now a days, every month a person from electricity board visits each and every consumers energy meter for tariff calculation and billing. The main drawback of this system is that person has to go area by area and he has to read the meter of every house and handover the bills. Many times errors like extra bill amount or notification from electric board even though the bills are paid are common errors. To overcome this drawback our proposed project will eliminate the third party between the consumer and service provider, even the errors will be overcome. In this paper, energy meters which are already installed at our houses are not replaced, but a small modification on the already installed meters can change the existing meters into smart meters. The use of Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) module provides a feature of notification through Short Message Service (SMS). One can easily access the meter working through web page that we designed. Current reading with cost can be seen on web page. Automatic ON & OFF of meter is possible. Threshold value setting and sending of notification is the additional task that we are performing. Monitoring and keeping tracking of your electricity consumption for verification is a tedious task today since you need to go to meter reading room and take down readings. Well it is important to know if you are charged accordingly so the need is quite certain. Well we automate the system by allowing users to monitor energy meter readings over the internet. Our proposed system uses energy meter with microcontroller system to monitor energy usage using a meter. The meter is used to monitor units consumed and transmit the units as well as cost charged over the internet using wifi connection. This allows user to easily check the energy usage along with the cost charged online using a simple web application. Thus the energy meter monitoring system allows user to effectively monitor electricity meter readings and check the billing online with ease. It has been further extended by adding an additional feature of tripping the supply to a particular customer in case bill is not paid. The tariff changes can also be easily updated by the EB when needed.

Electricity plays a cardinal role in day to day life. The electrical energy consumption in India is the third biggest after China and USA with 5.5% global share in 2016. The per person energy use rate in India is closer to 0.7 KW. India's share with global energy demand will rise to 9% by 2035. Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging field and IoT based devices have created a revolution in electronics and IT. The foremost objective of this project is to create awareness about energy consumption and efficient use of home appliances for energy savings. Due to manual work, our existing electricity billing system has major drawbacks. This system gives the information on meter reading, power cut and the alert systems for producing an alarm when energy consumption exceeds beyond the specified limit using IoT. This idea is being implemented to reduce the human dependency to collect the monthly reading and minimize the technical problems regarding billing process. This project extends the design and implementation of an energy monitoring system with the pre-intimation of power agenda using Arduino micro controller and a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) module. The advantage of this system is that a user can understand the power consumed by the electrical appliances on the daily basis and can take further steps to control them and thus help in energy conservation. From the electricity board section, the information regarding the bill amount, payment and the pre-planned power shut down details are communicated to the consumer. If the customer does not pay the bill in time, the user is informed through a message. If still the customer does not pay the bill, then as per designated consideration, one alert message will be sent then automatically power connection is disconnected from the remote server. In the already existing smart energy meter, it shows the energy consumed by the appliances from the date of installation of the energy meter and its corresponding rupees. In this proposed energy meter, the meter gives the energy consumed on daily basis, its corresponding rupees, billing details and payment using IoT. Additionally, it has the main objective of giving the preintimation of power schedule and an alert system for producing an alarm when the energy consumption exceeds beyond the certain limit. It also has the facility of terminating the power supply when the residents are out of station to minimize the wastage of energy. This system not only reduces the power cut issues and the labor cost for noticing the residential energy consumption in regular intervals but also increases the energy conservation with the help of alarm systems and the energy meter accuracy by reducing the billing error and the cost of maintenance.

This paper presents an implementation of IoT to develop a pre-paid energy meter system using an IoT prototype for monitoring and controlling energy and power consumption. This system is used for the remote or on-site management of energy and power consumption. The system provides a user interface using Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) so the user can pay the required price for the desired unit. The system provides a web user interface to monitor energy and power consumption, including the number of units and price. The ultimate goal is to promote a sense of optimization of power usage by letting the user pay before they have access to electricity. The system consists of an energy meter box that is connected to individual load connections. This energy meter box consists of a microcontroller on Arduino, a GSM module, a voltage sensor, and current sensor, and an LCD. The LCDs are the energy and power consumed, the price remaining, and the number of units consumed.

Objectives: To present a Smart Energy Meter (SEM) that reduces errors effectively while generating the electricity bill. Methods: This SEM confluence of modern technology and existing electrical architecture, yet it is a low-cost device suitable for the Indian environment. The proposed SEM is only incorporated with a current sensor and other associated circuitry. Findings: A quantitative comparison between our SEM and other existing SEMs revealed that the proposed SEM is superior in the economy, circuit complexity, and accuracy. With mere Indian Rupees (INR) around 3k to 3.5k, it can be designed to be used. There is no complex circuitry associated with this proposed SEM. The accuracy of the proposed SEM is also comparable with the existing meters that it could attain up to 0.7-0.9 % accuracy. Novelty: The proposed system deals with the digitalization of the billing process with the help of sensors that are used to calculate the usage time of each household device. Subsequently, it alerts the user about the consumed units using a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) module. An Advanced Reduced Instruction Set Computer Machine (ARM7) microcontroller continuously monitors the system, and the results can be viewed through a built-in Android App. A Wi-Fi module allows for continual data updates and control of home appliances. An intelligent security system that provides a high level of home security using visual surveillance is developed and explored in this paper. This will be very much useful in home and company automation. The main processing unit is a cortex ARM processor with Linux operating system and the board we are using is Beagle Bone Black (BBB). Surveillance system is achieved using OpenCV(open source computer vision) and the communication system is designed by using GSM(Global System for Mobile Communication) Module. Total number of people in a room is counted by using the OpenCV. The user while leaving the premises can give voice command to make the system active. The system continues automatic surveillance when the user left the house or office. It can be modified to turn on automatic surveillance at a specific time of the day. If the user left the premises and the system detects the presence of a human being in there then an SMS will be sent to the Cell phone of the user and the alarm will be turned on. After turning on the alarm the system will start recording video on the SD card so the user can inspect later. The system can also count the number of people in the room by using image processing algorithm and will automatically turns off all the load in the room when no one is present. This will also help to reduce the unnecessary wastage of power.

This research focuses on the manufacture of home automation systems to optimize the use of electricity. Home automation system has four features, namely automatic control, manual control, control based on the habits and customs control based on fuzzy logic and method Tsukamoto. Fuzzy logic Tsukamoto will calculate the temperature that should be spent by the AC, using input from sensors LM35 that are indoors and outdoors, so that the temperature of the issued AC was not too hot and too cold home automation system features 3 sensors which PIR sensor, sensor LM35 and LDR sensor that will be used as input data on the system. Abstract: This paper presents a system to monitor the transport facility of school children. In the present time due to the increase in cases of kidnapping and road accidents, there is always a concern for the parents regarding the travel safety of the school children. This system is proposed to improve safety measures and prevents such cases. This system is used to enhance monitor pick up/ drop off of school children from home to school and vice versa. The proposed system has an advantage of SMS based solution to aid parents to track their children location in real time. This system consists of Arduino Uno which is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328. It is the main functional unit of this system as it has 14 input /output pins and all other components are connected to these pins. For the identification purpose of each child, RFID tags are used. RFID tags stores unique digital identity codes that can be scanned from a distance and as well as capture the signal to the RFID reader. Whenever a child boards/deboard from the bus a message is sent to the registered number of the guardian/parents via GSM module. Home automation is a modern technology that helps to enjoy comfortable living conditions inside the home. With home automation, data can be instantly collected and passed between devices and analyzed simultaneously. By connecting the home appliances with the internet, they can be easily accessed from anywhere. In the home automation system, settings are feasible through smartphones or other remote-control devices. This paper gives the design and implementation of a new voice- controlled home automation system that uses Google Assistant for giving user’s voice commands as input. It is a low cost and flexible home automation and monitoring system. It enables the user to use a home automation system based on the Internet of Things (IoT). Home appliances like fans and lights can be controlled. The fundamental purpose of this project is to control electronic appliances based on the situational demands of the user.

The autonomous robotic glove is designed for paralysed patients, so they would be able to control several electrical appliances around them as well as send an alert message to a particular person. Developing countries are trying to abate the problems of these patients as they depend on others to control nearby appliances both in home and in hospital. In this research we proposed a solution by development & implementation of robotic glove. The research implementation consists of two parts. First part is transmitter and second part is receiver. Transmitter part mainly consists of flex sensors, Arduino uno and HC-11. Flex sensors are used to convert finger movements into different voltage levels, while Arduino is used to read this information from flex sensors and convey it to arduino mega on receiving end as programed by predefined gestures. HC-11 is a serial wireless communication transceiver module which is used to transmit information from Arduino uno to arduino mega on receiving side. Receiver side consist of HC-11, arduino mega, Global system for mobile communication (GSM) module, Optocoupler and Triac. Arduino-Mega is used to read the received information and perform action accordingly. On this side we have different electrical appliances which are controlled by hand gestures of patients as well as GSM module which is used to send different messages to associated person. Opto-coupler is used to isolate low power receiving circuit from high power load circuit. Triac is used for switching of AC supply. It is portable, requires low operating power on a single lithium-ion rechargeable battery and having less weight thus user friendly and affordable.

This paper describes the design of an innovative and low cost self-assistive technology that is used to facilitate the control of a wheelchair and home appliances by using advanced voice commands of the disabled people. This proposed system will provide an alternative to the physically challenged people with quadriplegics who is permanently unable to move their limbs (but who is able to speak and hear) and elderly people in controlling the motion of the wheelchair and home appliances using their voices to lead an independent, confident and enjoyable life. The performance of this microcontroller based and voice integrated design is evaluated in terms of accuracy and velocity in various environments. The results show that it could be part of an assistive technology for the disabled persons without any third person’s assistance.
