Abstract

Although interdisciplinary teams are growing in importance, not much research has been conducted to understand the mechanism of collaboration in interdisciplinary teams. In this paper, I investigate this mechanism by (a) underscoring the importance of cognitive issues in interdisciplinary work and collaborative communication, (b) introducing a possible definition and characteristics of Interdisciplinary IQ(I-IQ), (c) reviewing extant literature related to team cognition to see common features and differences compared to I-IQ, (d) delineating antecedents that lead to I-IQ, and (e) discussing contributions and future directions. By providing three antecedents of I-IQ, this framework will benefit future research in interdisciplinary teamwork by providing the characteristics and mechanisms of their communication.
