How the Ideation Process Shapes the Creative Output in Innovation Contests—An Analysis Using a Large Language Model

This paper introduces six aspects of the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ), from conceptual basics to a framework for interdisciplinary research, and explains some of the specific terminology, such as inventive principles, standard solutions, substance‐field‐systems or contradictions. The conceptual approach of TRIZ comprises the way from a concrete problem over an abstract problem to an abstract solution and from there to a concrete solution. This is supported by a toolkit, which helps the problem‐solver analysing and solving problems in different perspectives. The ‘power supply for notebook computers’ example demonstrates a problem‐solving process with TRIZ using contradiction thinking, the contradiction matrix and the inventive principles as tools. The TRIZ tools may be combined within a comprehensive process model such as ARIS or WOIS, which are briefly discussed. A framework for further research suggests five fields: the tools and their combination as the core, inspiration by new knowledge domains, adaptation to new fields of usage, psycho‐ and sociological contingency and integration with other creativity tools. The paper concludes with an overview of cornerstones in the history of TRIZ and suggests some introductory books and informative websites.

Innovation Management and an Innovative Ideas System Innovation management is one of the most important tasks for managers in order to make their organizations successful and efficient. A part of this ranges from innovative employee ideas for small everyday improvements up to innovations that bring enormous savings. The survey tries to determine which factors influence the number of innovative ideas and to propose methods for improvements in this area. The basic research method used was a questionnaire, which helped us gather data and the basic method used for data processing was statistical analysis. First, we established that there is a progressive correlation between the number of innovative ideas submitted in the past and the number of anticipated innovative ideas in the future. Second, we established that the following three factors have an impact on innovation and creativity: (1) work and education; (2) working and living conditions; and (3) rewards and payment. Finally, we have established that there is a correlation between satisfaction with the rewards and payment factor and the current life-cycle stage of organization. To summarize, the level of innovation and creativity of employees is influenced by their overall satisfaction in an organization.

Identification and conception of cleaner production opportunities with the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving

The research work analyses the relationship of 155 Process Intensification (PI) technologies to the components of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ). It outlines TRIZ inventive principles frequently used in PI, and identifies opportunities for enhancing systematic innovation in process engineering by applying complementary TRIZ and PI. The study also proposes 70 additional inventive TRIZ sub-principles for the problems frequently encountered in process engineering, resulting in the advanced set of 160 inventive operators, assigned to the 40 TRIZ inventive principles. Finally, we analyse and discuss inventive principles used in 150 patent documents published in the last decade in the field of solid handling in the ceramic and pharmaceutical industries.

In negotiating decisions are made using heuristics. This accounts for the lack of value creation on the part of negotiators. A conceptual analysis was performed of four negotiation cases that call for inventive problem solving. The negotiations were analyzed by using inventive principles derived from the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ), which were employed as alternative heuristics to overcome satisficing. The results show that the use of these inventive principles produces a better approach to the ideal of value creation in integrative negotiations. The author concludes that it is feasible to use inventive heuristics in order to overcome the traditional heuristics employed by negotiators (fighting fire with fire).

Rough handling in the slaughtering operation can cause animal’s stress resulting in the poor quality of meat because of the depleting muscle reserves to the lowest level. This condition will reduce the muscle lactic acid and increase the potential hydrogen on the meat above the normal level allowing a higher possibility for bacterial growth. Moreover, the rough slaughtering operation using the conventional technique may lead to slaughterer’s accident because of the cow’s mutiny. Thus, it is crucial to use the slaughtering tool that is safer and more comfortable to operate. This study aims to design the innovative slaughtering tool ergonomically and satisfying the user requirement. A survey was conducted to identify user criteria of the design. Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) was implemented as a fundamental basis to determine the inventive principle of the design, and the Quality Function Deployment was applied to develop the design specification. Non-parametric statistical analysis was done to test the hypothesis. This study reveals some identified inventive principles including dynamic quality, parameter changes, combination, and equipotentiality. Thus, the proposed design is valid to satisfy user need at 5% of significance level as it is proven to be safer, stronger, more practical, and more durable.

The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (known by its Russian acronym TRIZ) is used across the globe to help engineers working on product design and development. In previous papers the authors developed a Function-Based TRIZ method and began a validation process. A single innovative feature was identified in a sample of innovative products, and these features were traced backwards on the Function-Based TRIZ matrix. The Function-Based TRIZ matrix was deemed successful in cases where any inventive principle suggested by the matrix could have produced the innovative feature. During this process, the authors observed that no matter which principle was used, some mental leap was needed to apply it. Additionally, many different inventive principles can lead to the same concept. This paper examines a new hypothesis: that the provocative stimulus presented by any randomly selected inventive principle facilitates concept generation just as effectively as using the historical contradiction matrix to guide inventive principle selection. This paper presents a study on the benefits of using the TRIZ contradiction matrix to select the “correct” principles during concept generation. During this study, participants were asked to come up with concepts using one of two TRIZ matrices: the real one that contains historical knowledge from an extensive patent search, or a randomly populated one. The results of this exercise were then examined using modified versions of two concept evaluation metrics set forth by Shah: quantity and variety. This paper offers two contributions to the field. The first is a step toward understanding the role and importance of conflict mappings in TRIZ and TRIZ-like problem-solving methodologies. The second is a method for evaluating process variety (as opposed to outcome variety) when TRIZ is used to generate ideas.

Optimisation of sand casting process involves the adjustment of parameters as well as the improvement of optimisation process procedures and measures. Analysis of various critical process parameters and the interaction among them is carried out with the help of Taguchis method of experimental design, response surface methodology (RSM). This paper proposes a Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) method based on the process window approach (PWA) is to make the analysis more precise, cost effective and evaluating the robustness of a process set up quickly. The successful sand casting process parameters optimisation demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method. The objective of this article is to provide foundry personnel with innovative design ideas under research and for practical application.

This article mainly proposes a design process in which a combination of brainstorming and the theory of inventive problem-solving, better known as TRIZ, are used in the design process. We used illustrations by designing a recycling machine for Tetra Pak. Designers are guided to apply brainstorming to come up with innovative designs and features utilizing 39 engineering parameters, a contradiction matrix, and 40 inventive principles for solving design problems. Once copyright and patent laws have been adhered in order to ensure there are no infringements, a prototype may be constructed, and patents may be applied for.

A novel prompting method for few-shot NER via LLMs

This paper presents an introduction to the theory of inventive problem solving (TIPS); a series of powerful tools to direct the search for solutions to engineering problems. The system was developed by G.S. Altshuller and his school in the former USSR, based on an extensive study of the world patent database of over 400,000 inventions from different engineering fields. From these studies it was recognised that the evolution of technical systems follow a series of laws or trends. These laws can be utilised in the development of engineering solutions as an alternative to a `trial-and-error' or brainstorming techniques for problem solving. The tools include a set of the most commonly applied inventive principles, an algorithm for inventive problem solving, standard solutions, and a database containing hundreds of physical, chemical and geometric effects. A toolkit of methods assisting creativity and inventive thinking called 'theory of inventive problem solving' (TRIZ in Russian or TIPS in English transcription) has numerous successful practical applications both in manufacturing engineering and services. However, the evidence of TRIZ application in innovation management is limited. To fill this gap, this paper presents a systematic literature review of academic articles discussing TRIZ-based innovation methodologies. Our findings reveal that such elements of TRIZ, like contradiction analysis and the trends of engineering system evolution, are most commonly applied in innovation management, particularly on the ideation stages. Also, TRIZ tools demonstrate good complementarity with QFD1-based methodologies. Additionally, to the benefits of TRIZ tools, the results of our study confirmed the subjectivity of solutions and dependence on prior user experience. The application of TRIZ methodology for stimulating innovation process in SMEs is rather rare.

Tapping the innovative business potential of innovation contests

Understanding and assisting the clients in a more efficient way are paramount to maintain and to improve the relationship between the company and their customers. Quality Function Deployment has been used to understand the requirements of the customers. However, some requirements face technical obstacles in relation to the service provided. Theory of Inventive Problem Solving was developed to find innovative solutions to technical problems in products and process. This report describes a method that integrates Quality Function Deployment with Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, which requires technical innovation specified from an analysis of customers´ needs. Then, the technical problems to be solved are defined by quality characteristics, and technical innovation is executed by applying Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. Results showed efficiency on identifying customer’s requirements, reoccurring problems and finding better and innovative solutions.
