Implementation of the semantic web in business process modeling using Petri nets

Nowadays business processes are main concern in enterprises systems. The growing systems affect business process changes. Business processes always grow in order to fulfill the business activities. In this paper, we use a graph model called Petri Nets to analyze complex business processes. A Petri Net is the most usable model which often represents a process system in business concerns or others. Business processes are modeled using Petri Nets; then, the Petri Nets are separated into simpler fragments in order to make the analysis easier. In this context, we propose a method for developing an effective and efficient workflow repository system by using minimal functional subnet concept for generating common workflow in Petri Nets models. Thus process could lead to compose a new workflow. The results show that a complex business process can be decomposed into functional subnets which are smaller as well as simpler fragments of a complex business process. Then, the functional subnets are classified based on control-flow patterns in order to identify subnet roles in work-flow management. Later, we extract common fragments of functional subnets and use them for composing a new models of Petri Nets workflow required by user.

Deadlock/livelock problems can cause catastrophic results in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) by forcing them to stop production processes at an unpredictable stage of production. Therefore, they must be handled properly in order to obtain flawless production in FMS. Petri net (PN) based deadlock/livelock studies for FMS have been widely carried out to obtain live PN models. When a PN model is live, this ensures that the modelled FMS is deadlock-free. Firstly, an uncontrolled (plant) PN model is constructed for the FMS suffering from deadlocks/livelocks. Then reachability graph (RG) analysis of this PN model is carried out to provide all possible reachable states of the modelled system. An RG of a PN model of an FMS suffering from deadlock/livelock problems can be split into the live zone (LZ) and the deadlock zone (DZ). The former is the set of system states considered to be legal (good), while the latter is the set of system states regarded to be illegal (bad). The LZ represents the optimal (maximally permissive) system behavior that must be provided by an optimal control policy. Generally, in PN based liveness studies, a liveness enforcing supervisor (LES) consisting of a set of control places (CP) is computed. Then the controlled (closed-loop) PN model is obtained by merging the plant PN model and the LES. If the number of reachable live states of the controlled PN model is the same as the ones that exist in the LZ, then the controlled model is optimal. Otherwise, it is suboptimal. The greater the number of live reachable states of the RG, the more products to be produced within the FMS. Therefore, the number of reachable live states of the controlled PN model is considered as a quality measure. It defines the behavioral permissiveness of the controlled model. In the literature, to verify the behavioral permissiveness of the PN models, the PN tool called INA (Integrated Net Analyzer) has been widely used. Recently, by means of INA, a method was proposed to compute the number of states within the LZ and the DZ of a given PN model suffering from deadlocks/livelocks. Unfortunately, INA cannot compute RGs of large PNs having a few millions of states. Therefore, in this paper by means of TINA (TIme petri Net Analyzer), an alternative faster and much more efficient method is proposed for the computation of the number of states within the LZ and the DZ for PN models with large RGs. In addition, in order to enable the development of new PN based deadlock prevention methods, further computations are also proposed. These include the computation of the set of states in the DZ, LZ and first met bad markings (FBMs) for a given PN model suffering from deadlocks/livelocks. Business process modelling is an important part of system design. When designing or redesigning a business process, stakeholders specify, negotiate, and agree on business requirements to be satisfied, including non-functional requirements that concern the quality of the business process. This thesis addresses the question of how to specify and compute the quality of a business process, given the model that stakeholders use. The motivation for this thesis is the increasing importance of the quality of business processes. Knowing the quality of specific business processes enables stakeholders to judge if these processes need improvement. Knowing the quality of the constructs of those processes (viz., events, inputs, activities, and outputs) and the way they are structured enables a more detailed analysis of their shortcomings and provides a basis for the design of improvements. The research challenge of this thesis is grounded in the assumption that: “Organisations need an appropriate means to effectively compute achievement of their goals and objectives by their business processes.” Given this challenge, the main research question on which this thesis focuses is: “Can the quality of a business process be computed quantitatively at different levels of granularity?” The research objective is: “To develop frameworks, factors, and metrics for computing non-functional requirements (quality) of business processes quantitatively at different levels of granularity.” The outcomes of this thesis are: 1) BPIMM, a language-independent business process integrating meta-model, based on the concepts of seven mainstream business process modelling languages: BPMN, EPC, RAD, UML AD, SADT, IDEF0, and IDEF3. 2) BPC-QC (Business Process Concept - Quality Computation), an approach to quality computation at the lowest level of granularity of a business process. The approach consists of: i. BPC-QEF (Business Process Concept - Quality Evaluation Framework), a language-independent generic framework and algorithm to compute the quality of the constructs of a business process: event, input, activity, and output. ii. A set of business process quality dimensions and factors. The following quality dimensions are distinguished: performance, efficiency, reliability, recoverability, permissibility, and availability. Each dimension categorises different quality aspects in terms of factors. A non-exhaustive set of sixteen quantitative factors is provided. iii. Quality metrics for each of the quality factors, to facilitate a quantitative computation of the quality of a specific construct of a business process. 3) BP-QC (Business Process - Quality Computation), an approach to compute the quality at the highest level of granularity of a business process. The approach consists of: i. BP-CQCF (Business Process - Compositional Quality Computation Framework), a language-independent generic framework and algorithm to compute the quality of a business process as a whole, given the quality of its constructs. ii. A set of generic business process modelling patterns to decompose a business process into more succinct parts, namely: sequential, parallel with synchronisation, exclusive, inclusive, simple loop, and complex loop. iii. A set of over one hundred computational formulae. For each combination of modelling pattern and a quality factor, there is a formula to compute the quality. 4) AAV (Approach to Application and Validation), an evaluation plan to evaluate BPIMM, BPC-QC and BP-QC in practice, together with expert stakeholders. The plan consists of the units of measure, a measurement model, and a case study procedure. To evaluate the applicability of the contributions of this thesis to real world business needs, four case studies have been conducted in different environments: a Dutch educational institution, a global financial institution, an international financial service provider, and a Dutch research project on crisis management. Each of these case studies concerns a different, single business process. This thesis shows that: 1) A quality computation approach can be adopted independent of a business process modelling language. 2) Quantitative quality factors can be introduced specifically for the constructs of a business process. 3) Quantitative metrics and computational formulae can be developed for specific quality factors, allowing the computation of different aspects of the quality of a business process quantitatively at different levels of granularity. 4) An evaluation plan can be developed to evaluate the applicability of the contributions of this thesis (viz., BPIMM, BPC-QC, and BP-QC). The contributions of this thesis are designed to be beneficial to the areas of business and management, requirements engineering, software engineering, and business process modelling. In the areas of requirements engineering and software engineering, these contributions are intended to help practitioners to consider non-functional requirements at the earliest stage. In the area of business process modelling, information systems, service computing, and cloud computing, the contributions can be used for quality-driven modelling, design, and redesign. To conclude, knowing the quality value of a business process at different levels of granularity provides a basis for its improvement.

Enabling flexible location-aware business process modeling and execution

In this paper a hybrid approach is proposed for supervisory control of discrete event systems (DES) subject to forbidden states. Assuming that an uncontrolled bounded Petri net (PN) model of a (plant) DES and a set of forbidden state specifications are given, the proposed approach computes a maximally permissive and nonblocking closed-loop hybrid model. The first step is to simplify the given PN model by means of PN reduction rules. The simplified model and the specifications are then represented as buffers, and supervisory control theory (SCT) is applied to obtain a Ramadge–Wonham (RW) supervisor in the form of an automaton. After reduction of the latter’s state size by a ‘control congruence’, the simplified RW supervisor is represented by a so-called auto-net and coupled to the given uncontrolled PN plant model by means of inhibitor arcs to represent the disabling actions. The plant model and supervisor auto-net run concurrently, synchronizing on shared events. This procedure provides a maximally permissive and nonblocking ‘hybrid’ (mixed PN/automaton) closed-loop controlled system. The method is straightforward logically, graphically, and technologically. Its applicability is shown by two examples, one of them a workcell from the PN control literature.

Modelling and performance analysis is one of the most important issues in business processes. Built on top of web protocols and XML language, web services are emerging as a high level framework for business-to-business relationships. UML can be used to model web services interactions and reengineered diagrams using Petri nets like semantics instead of state machines. Unfortunately, the standard has failed to define formal semantics. To address this issue, this paper provides a mapping from activities to Petri net models. Formalisations basing on UML and Petri nets of control-flow patterns for service composition are addressed. We propose a high-level class of Petri nets for describing the behaviour of scenarios of web services composition. Developed models support the strong dynamic and temporal aspects of these scenarios. Translation rules from flow patterns into Petri net models are provided. Finally an illustrative example is given to show the applicability of the proposed approach.

Business Environments, such as shops, offices, automation plants, etc., are usually handled by the modeling and execution of business processes using languages such as Colored Petri Nets (CPN). CPN are a mathematical and graphical modeling language with powerful analysis techniques. However, current Petri nets formalisms are not aware of their execution context (i.e., Users and equipment location, temporal and environmental properties, etc.) and therefore it is not possible to manage business processes whose execution adapts to its context. To support this adaptation and make business processes smarter, this paper extends CPN with ontologies. Ontologies are powerful and very expressive techniques for modeling context and storing its data at execution time. To be aware of the current context, a context manager is used to sense the execution context using ubicomp technologies and represent it in the ontologies. This solution not only allows the modeling and execution of context-adaptive Petri nets, but also improves system design, reuse, and maintenance by dealing with context and business behavior as separate concerns.

This paper deals with the modeling and control of discrete event robotic manufacturing cells using Petri nets, and proposes a methodology of model based design and implementation of hierarchical and distributed control. Hierarchical Petri net models are adopted; conceptual Petri net model and detailed Petri net model. The overall detailed Petri net model is decomposed into local Petri net models which are used by the local machine controllers. The upper level station controller coordinates the distributed local controllers so that the aggregate behavior of decomposed subnets is the same as that of the original Petri net. The overall control system is implemented using multithreaded programming based on Petri net based multitask processing. Simulation experiments show that the distributed Petri net model based control system can perform the overall multitask processing control by coincidence of the behavior of the real system with the local Petri net models.

The need to extend business process languages with the capability to model complex data objects along with the control flow perspective has lead to significant practical and theoretical advances in the field of Business Process Modeling (BPM).On the practical side, there are several suites for control flow and data modeling; nonetheless, when it comes to formal verification, the data perspective is abstracted away due to the intrinsic difficulty of handling unbounded data. On the theoretical side, there is significant literature providing decidability results for expressive data-aware processes. However, they struggle to produce a concrete impact as being far from real BPM architectures and, most of all, not providing actual verification tools. In this paper we aim at bridging such a gap: we provide a concrete framework which, on the one hand, being based on Petri Nets and relational models, is close to the widely used BPM suites, and on the other is grounded on solid formal basis which allow to perform formal verification tasks. Moreover, we show how to encode our framework in an action language so as to perform reachability analysis using virtually any state-of-the-art planner.

Modelling and analysis of kanban-controlled (just-in-time) production systems under realistic assumptions presents a number of challenges, including the ability to conduct both qualitative and quantitative analysis, and the ability to model control policies. These challenges are due, in part, to station interdependence, blocking and starvation due to limited buffer spaces, and the necessity of modelling both material and kanban flows. Petri nets (PNs) have recently emerged as a promising approach for modelling manufacturing systems. PNs are a graphical and mathematical technique useful for modelling concurrent, asynchronous, distributed, parallel, non-deterministic and stochastic systems. PN models can be analysed to determine both their qualitative and quantitative properties. In this paper, we develop stochastic, coloured PN (SCPN) models of a JIT system utilizing two different kanban control policies: a traditional kanban system (TKS) policy and a flexible kanban system (FKS) policy. The resulting models can be used to represent JIT systems of arbitrary size, producing single or multiple types of products, with fixed order points 1. The models are shown to be live and bounded, and can be simulated to produce quantitative results. Sample simulation results are presented to illustrate the models' capabilities.

Artificial neural networks (ANN's) are highly parallel and distributed computational structures that can learn from experience and perform inferences. Petri nets, on the other hand, provide an effective modeling framework for distributed systems. The basic concepts of Petri net are utilized to develop ANN-like multilayered Petri net architectures of distributed intelligence having learning ability. A Petri net model of single neuron is presented. A two-layer Petri net model-neural Petri net (NPN)-that uses this neuron model as a building block is described. A new class of Petri nets called the fuzzy neural Petri net (FNPN) is defined. The FNPN can be used for representing a fuzzy knowledge base and for fuzzy reasoning. Some application examples for the two Petri net based models are given. >

Semantic Web for Health Care and Life Sciences: a review of the state of the art

To simulate and debug or diagnose manufacturing systems is always challenging. This paper presents a hybrid PLC-controlled and PC Visual Basic (VB)-based Human-Machine Interface (HMI) platform based on Petri net (PN) theory for Manufacturing Systems. An augmented PN model was adopted to design and simulate the operational sequence of the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) at the National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology (NKFUST). With the simulated PN model, the control sequences were quickly translated into PLC programs. A PC-based HMI monitoring system based on the PN model was developed to provide an intuitive offline simulation and online diagnostic tools for the FMS. This hybrid system shows many of advantages by using the economical discrete control unit with PLC, and PC-based HMI using PN model as a base. The discrete event control sequence of an FMS can be easily modeled and evaluated before its build-up. More importantly, it can be diagnosed online when the system is malfunctioning. That is, the presented system provides an adequate means for offline system design, simulation, performance evaluation, and quick online system diagnostic.

Business process modeling (BPM) is one of the key technologies to benefit enterprises with higher efficiencies and greater business values. However, BPM requires intensive business expertise and human resources. Thus, it is valuable and challenging to enable fast delivery of reusable business process designs, regarding the existence of various popular business processes modeling languages and fast changing markets. In this paper, we generate language-specific business process models and process interaction semantics from UML 2.0 process models. A WS-BPEL metadata model and a process interaction semantics metadata model is defined to annotate UML 2.0 business process model as stereotypes; with a set of transformation patterns, we can generate a WS-BPEL business process model and a process interaction semantics file from each annotated UML 2.0 process model. Our approach can also be similarly applied to other process modeling languages to highly reuse the business process model in UML 2.0.

This paper presents an approach to perform Activity Based Costing (ABC) with Petri nets. ABC is a powerful methodology to calculate various of discrete event systems (e.g. production systems). Petri net models of discrete event systems are easy to create, comprehend, and to perform analysis, the mathematics behind Petri nets is also easy to grasp. This paper shows how ABC can be performed with Petri nets, so that various involved in a discrete event system can be easily measured with the help of the Petri net model. After a short introduction to ABC and Petri nets, this paper shows the approach which basically embeds various cost drivers as firing costs and firing times of transitions in a Petri net model. This work also presents a case study that is done with GPenSIM, a toolbox realized with this approach.
