Improving Trust in Information Sources: Serbian Wikipedia Use Case

Until today, inadequate food supply, malnutrition, food adulteration, etc., are still the key concern in developing economies. In order to address these issues of food security crisis, and to stimulate a sustainable supply of liquid milk (LM), a consumer behavior model was created, in which consumers’ perceived knowledge, trust and risk were the major catalysts. To shed light on this context, the study examined the effect of consumers’ perceived knowledge (PK) on their perceived risk (PR) and trust (in information sources and in the product). Further, the influence of consumers’ perceived knowledge, risk, and trust on their attitude and purchase intention (PI) were investigated via an exclusive survey design. The survey was conducted in the urban area of Dhaka and Chittagong, Bangladesh. The sample of 712 households was selected randomly and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed employing descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modelling. The results show that during a food security crisis, consumers’ perceived knowledge amplifies their perceived risk and their trust in information sources (ISs). During such a period, their perceived knowledge does not induce purchase intention but trust in ISs does. Again, consumers’ perceived risk leads to reduced trust in products, and hence in LM, but not reduced trust in ISs. Moreover, a paradoxical influence was found, where consumers’ perceived risks had no significant effect on the PI, meaning that they underestimate the risk of purchasing LM. The results also show that when explaining the purchase intention of LM, the effect of ‘trust in ISs’ was higher than that of their perceived ‘trust in the product (LM)’ and perceived knowledge.

Trust in information sources about COVID-19 may influence the public attitude toward the disease and the imposed restrictions, thus determining the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in a given country. Acknowledging an increase in trust in the government or the so-called rally ‘round the flag’ effect around the world at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study explores possible determinants of this effect in Latvia, looking at such variables as the perceived disease risk, gender, age, education, income, and language spoken in the family. Presuming that risk perception may be amplified by trust in various information sources, we investigate a spill-over of the rally ‘round the flag’ effect on healthcare professionals, media, and interpersonal networks. Studying data from a nationally representative sociological survey conducted in September 2020, we confirm a positive relationship between trust in all information sources, except friends, relatives, and colleagues, and perceived disease risk. Correlations are also strong regarding trust in almost all information sources and the measured socio-demographic variables, except gender. Interpersonal trust seems to be relatively stable, and in most cases the correlations are statistically insignificant. With this study we suggest that increase in trust in government institutions as well as other information sources, even in crisis situations, does not depend on any single element, but instead presents a more complex phenomenon.

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) significantly influences students’ learning behavior, including the potential for dependency and a decline in critical thinking skills. This study aims to assess the level of awareness, usage patterns, and perceptions of students in the Information Systems Program, Faculty of Computer Science, University of Jember regarding the impact of AI on academic activities. A descriptive quantitative method was employed by distributing a Likert-scale questionnaire to 30–50 randomly selected students. The research instrument was validated through content validity by experts and tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The findings indicate that students possess a strong understanding of AI concepts and benefits, particularly in enhancing learning efficiency and productivity. However, they also recognize risks such as dependency, weakened critical thinking, ethical concerns, and potential data misuse. Overall, the study concludes that the use of AI among students must be balanced with digital literacy, technological ethics, and appropriate regulation to ensure intelligent, critical, and responsible utilization

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is thought to have affected the mental health of all humanity, especially health workers. It is important to evaluate prehospital healthcare workers fighting COVID-19 at the forefront in terms of depression, which is one of the most common psychiatric diseases, and to determine the factors that affect it. In this study, we aimed to analyze the COVID-19-related depression and associated factors among healthcare professionals working in pre-hospital emergency medical services (PEMS).MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a survey method on 552 healthcare professionals working in PEMS. The perceived risk and fear of being infected, trust in information sources, and depression levels as measured by Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) were evaluated in relation to COVID-19.RESULTS: Women had higher BDI scores than men (p = 0.009). BDI scores were higher in widowed or divorced compared to married or single individuals. Those with greater perceived risk and fear of being infected with COVID-19 had also increased BDI scores. BDI scores were higher in those with low trust in information sources and a low level of knowledge about the disease.CONCLUSIONS: Women, divorced or widowed, those with greater perceived risk and fear of being infected, those with low trust in information sources, and those with a low level of knowledge about the disease are more prone to depression associated with COVID-19 and hence should be supported.

190 Background: In order to improve the quality of the communication between the healthcare system and cancer survivors, it is fundamental to understand their preferred sources of health information. In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), little is known regarding which sources are used and trusted the most. This information is crucial to develop effective communication aimed at achieving high-quality equitable cancer care. Our objective was to explore the preferred sources of health information in Mexico, and to understand which factors influence these choices. Methods: We examined sources of health information among cancer survivors in Mexico City using questions from the Spanish Version of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). The characteristics of survivors who preferred the internet were compared with those who preferred other sources (doctors, printed materials, family members, organizations) using Fisher’s exact test. Logistic regression was used to assess the effects of patient characteristics on health information-seeking. Results: Of 148 participants, 82 (56%) had internet access. Of the 88 patients who had sought health information, 61 (69%) listed the internet as their preferred source. Those 65 and older were less likely to seek health information, regardless of the source (OR 0.17, p < 0.0001). Survivors who preferred the internet were more likely to be younger (p = 0.001), male (p = 0.003) and to have a higher educational level (p = 0.009). Comorbidities, stage, cancer type, and time from diagnosis had no effect on patient preferences. Doctors were the most trusted source of information (85%), followed by the internet (28%) and government agencies (23%). Conclusions: Mexican patients who seek health information online are more likely to be young educated males. Doctors represent the most trusted source of information, particularly for patients from vulnerable populations (such as older women with low educational levels). High-quality healthcare information programs in LMICs should be designed taking these behaviors into account, and patients should continue to receive health information via their most trusted sources.

We study the role of endogenous trust in amplifying ideological bias. Agents in our model learn a sequence of states from sources whose accuracy is ex ante uncertain. Agents learn these accuracies by comparing their own reasoning about the states based on introspection or direct experience to the sources’ reports. Small biases in this reasoning can cause large ideological differences in the agents’ trust in information sources and their beliefs about the states, and may lead agents to become overconfident in their own reasoning. Disagreements can be similar in magnitude whether agents see only ideologically aligned sources or diverse sources. (JEL D42, D72, D83, L25, L82, Z13)

Information technology development brings a very broad impact on human life. With this Model View Controller (MVC) concept, information system development could be developed in accordance needs of the user’s information system development and be able to adapt the development in the organization. Needs of fast and precise and adaptive information system information is needed in this modern era when everything needs to be fast. Faculty of computer science (FIK) Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veterans Jakarta (UPNVJ) as one work unit under the government agency, has State-owned inventories to support all activities to carry out the Tri Dharma or the higher education pillars, especially in the field of education. The state-owned inventories or devices are available in FIK such as monitors, printers, LCD, mouse, etc. For continuity of this educational process, the state-owned inventories must be maintained. Therefore, in this research, the researchers will develop an information system to document the state-owned inventory records for helping the management of the state-owned inventories in the faculty of computer science at UPN Veteran Jakarta. The information system was built using the waterfall method and using the PHP programming language and MySQL database running on a server. This information system provides features to manage users, manage components, access system logs, access system settings, manage devices, manage the location, and access reports. The system that has been developed has also passed the eligibility assessment for all aspects of both visual communication aspects, software engineering aspects, and usability aspects.

The development of information technology brings us into a new world, a world where communication plays an important role in life. A variety of facilities are provided to meet all communication needs. The Faculty of Computer Science is one of the Faculties at Pasir Pengaraian University, at the Faculty of Computer Science also provides various information about teaching staff (lecturers), lectures, teaching schedules and so on. Management of information at this time is by the archive system on file folders with a long search process. Based on these problems a special lecturer profile information system was created at the Faculty of Computer Science. In the system built this has the advantage that the search time does not require a long time and can be accessed by all parties. With this system can help all parties who need lecturer data.

This study examines the relationship between different information consumption patterns and COVID-19-related outcomes in Oman. A total of 759 participants completed a cross-sectional survey from September to October 2020 that measured COVID-19 knowledge, misinformation, fact-checking, trust in information sources, institutional trust, and vaccination intentions. Participants were categorized into four groups based on their information consumption behaviors: low scanners/no seekers (LSNS), low scanners/seekers (LSS), high scanners/no seekers (HSNS), and high scanners/seekers (HSS). A multivariate analysis of variance was conducted to compare the outcome variables, and structural equation modeling (SEM) explored the role of trust in mediating the relationship between information consumption patterns and vaccination intentions. HSS demonstrated the highest levels of COVID-19 knowledge, trust in government and social media, and confidence in institutional crisis management. In contrast, LSNS exhibited the lowest levels of COVID-19 knowledge and trust. HSNS were the most susceptible to misinformation and conspiracy beliefs. Social media played a dual role as both a trusted information source and a conduit for misinformation. SEM analysis highlighted trust as a key mediator in the relationship between HSS information consumption patterns and vaccination intentions. This study highlights the importance of audience segmentation in public health strategies and the necessity of fostering active information-seeking to enhance knowledge, trust, and vaccination uptake. Targeted interventions can mitigate misinformation risks among passive information consumers, while social media campaigns can foster fact-checking and digital literacy. Together, these strategies can help bridge knowledge gaps and enhance public health compliance during crises.

Higher levels of trust in credible sources of information in times of crisis such as the current COVID-19 pandemic increase public compliance with official recommendations, minimizing health risks and helping authorities manage the crisis. Based on a national survey (N=1160), this article explores (a) actual levels of trust in various sources of information (government websites, legacy media, social media, and interpersonal communication) during the pandemic and (b) a number of predictors of such trust. Results show that during the period studied government websites were the most trusted source of information. Trust in an information source is correlated with consumption of COVID-19–related news from that specific source, media fact-checking, and self-perception about the incidence of COVID-19–related fake news. Only income and age are significant trust predictors, and only with respect to specific source types.

Trust, authority and credibility in the digital environment have attracted the interest of many researchers in the recent years. Reliable and credible information are key factors for making numerous decisions in our everyday lives, from making political choices to choosing a healthy lifestyle. Various health-related narratives are present in the public sphere. Health advice and recommendations on vaccination, antibiotics, nutrition, exercise and numerous other topics are provided by different sources, scientific community, healthcare professionals, media, lay people, patients, social networks, etc. It was the infodemic associated with the coronavirus pandemic that again brought to the forefront the importance of reliable and credible health information and health information literacy in this complex digital environment. In such fragmented information ecosystem, characterized by the post-truth era, where misinformation and fake news spread by uninformed individuals or advocates of various conspiracy theories are considered equivalent to reliable scientific information, individuals have to choose whom to trust, based on their critical capacities and competencies, in order to make health decisions for themselves and their families. The young people of today, especially those born after the year 2000, represent the generation of digital natives, who grew up and spent their entire lives surrounded by digital technologies that have become an integral part of their lives. They think and process information differently than their predecessors. Most of them use the Internet as their primary source for accessing information, most often through smartphones, spend the vast majority of time online, increasingly use social networks for private and professional purposes, but at the same time have difficulty assessing the reliability of online information. The way they assess trust in digital information is different from the way they question information credibility in traditional media. Given that trust and credibility of information strongly influence the effect of information message itself, which, in extraordinary circumstances and public health crisis such as the coronavirus pandemic, is of vital importance for the lives of people, it is very important to understand how users decide whom to trust. Health information literacy is a multidimensional and dynamic concept that incorporates social, cognitive, economic, and personal skills to search, understand, and use health information in order to improve and maintain good health. The evaluation of online health information, i.e. its reliability and credibility, plays a significant role in the process of health behavior change. Research to date has not reached a consensus on unique framework for understanding the process of building user confidence in online health information. The focus of this doctoral dissertation are theoretical and analytical challenges of health information literacy as a multidimensional and dynamic concept, particularly in understanding the process of creating trust in online health information. By examining the attitudes and opinions of medical students about the evaluation of online health information we aimed to determine factors that influence the assessment of health information quality and credibility. The main research objective is to examine the element of information appraisal in the concept of health information literacy and to determine the processes of creating trust in health information in an online environment. The specific research objectives are as follows: 1. to identify factors and techniques for assessing the quality, reliability and credibility of online health information; 2. to determine the elements of cognitive heuristics for assessing the reliability of online health information; 3. to determine the impact of infodemic during a healthcare crisis on online health information trust issues; 4. to examine methods for assessing the quality and reliability of user-generated online health information; 5. to investigate medical students' attitudes and knowledge of the concepts and tools for assessing health information literacy. Our research aimed to determine common elements of information appraisal in the concept of health information literacy and related concepts dealing with online health information (health literacy, information literacy, media literacy, digital literacy, etc.). The research was performed using multiple methods conducted in three phases: 1. literature review and comparative analysis of selected tools and instruments for assessment of health information literacy and related concepts; 2. a survey questionnaire that examined the attitudes and opinions of medical students of the University of Zagreb School of Medicine regarding online health information appraisal, and 3. semi-structured interviews with a smaller subgroup of respondents in order to build on the findings from the survey questionnaire related to the determination of factors that influence trust in online health information, i.e. assessment of their quality and credibility. The results of our research demonstrated that medical students have the knowledge, skills and techniques necessary to assess the quality, reliability and credibility of online health information. Although medical students generally considered Internet to be a questionable source for health information, the majority reported that they always use online search engines as the first step when searching for health topics, regardless of their purpose (general interest, academic assignment, or personal or health problem among family and friends, etc.). Medical students consider the following analytical criteria when assessing the credibility of online health information: trustworthiness, completeness, objectivity and comprehensiveness of information, referencing other data sources and author disclosure. Apart from analytical criteria, medical students also use cognitive heuristics when assessing the reliability of online health information, especially user-generated content that is published and shared via social networks. Students also emphasized the importance of critical thinking, factual analysis, information verification on multiple sources, determination of source credentials as well as sharing information with family members, friends, colleagues, physicians and university professors who they consider as cognitive authorities in health communication. Research results indicate an overall positive relationship between perceived health information literacy of medical students, their ability to evaluate online health information and trust in the Internet as a source of health information. Students with high self-perceived level of e-health literacy more often use websites of government institutions and professional medical associations than other sources for online health information. Our research also revealed that the degree of trust that medical students have in online sources of information affects their behavior when searching and evaluating online health information. In healthcare crisis situations, medical students apply additional evaluation criteria for usergenerated health information on social media. In general, medical students expressed mistrust towards social networks, especially as a source of credible health information in the context of an infodemic. Although the majority of students use social networks only passively, they also believe that social networks present a platform that has the potential, if used appropriately, to convey reliable information and improve health information literacy. Students also stressed that, during infodemic, strategic crisis communication skills should be applied for proactive dissemination of credible, factual and scientific evidence in order to contribute to a faster and more efficient containment of the spread of misinformation and fake news on social media. The results of our research have shown that online health information should be comprehensive, accurate, evidence-based, objective and up-to-date in order to convey a quality health message. According to medical students, quality of information, source credibility, comprehensibility and readability, as well as verification of information in evidence-based sources are main predictors of trust in online health information. Understanding which health channels and sources are considered most reliable among different user groups can help health professionals reach at-risk patients in order to communicate health messages more successfully and implement interventions aimed at strengthening skills that are important for health information appraisal. By analyzing medical students` attitudes and opinions about credibility of online health information, we explored ways to promote critical thinking in the digital environment in order to empower individuals to make decisions in their everyday life based on verified and credible sources of information. Placing greater emphasis on lifelong learning about health, and formal and informal health information literacy education, enables greater autonomy and empowerment of individuals, and can be viewed as part of personal development towards an improved quality of life. Health information literacy increases individual and community resistance to harmful and misleading information and reduces the impact of the infodemic on human health. Improving health information literacy among population requires joint action and cooperation between stakeholders and policymakers (government authorities, media, scientific, educational and health institutions, healthcare professionals, scientists, researchers, librarians and others). Health information literacy is an important competence of every individual, but its implications for society are much broader. They include personal and social responsibility of individuals and taking ethical actions for the benefit of the community. A modern democratic society implies engaged citizens who autonomously reflect on political, ethical and social challenges in everyday life. Empowerment in health and social care, achieved by developing critical competencies, helps in distancing oneself from various social pressures, making independent informed decisions and taking responsibility for one's own health. Croatia, unlike most other European countries, still does not have an official strategy or action plan for developing and improving health information literacy among its population. Our research results point out the importance of including health information literacy in the national health policy and education strategy, with particular emphasis on developing critical thinking skills and competencies in evidence-based approach to online health information appraisal. The results of this research contribute to the conceptual linking of theoretical constructs on information appraisal and critical theories from information and communication sciences with constructs from the field of public health. The mentioned approach resulted in unifying the narratives of different domains, and synthesizing separate theoretical frameworks, namely health information and related literacies, which adds to the value of this research. The results of this research serve as a basis for defining skills for critical appraisal of online health information in order to increase the level of health information literacy and development of tools for evaluating the reliability of online health information. On the applicative level, this doctoral dissertation provides recommendations for communication of reliable online health information from the current infodemic perspective, in planning public health activities and interventions in the future.

Introduction Personalised Medicine (PM) aims to tailor diagnostic and therapeutic pathways for patients. Despite technological advancements in this field, public awareness of PM remains limited, representing a barrier to its clinical integration. Methods We conducted a survey across eight European Countries (France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain) via the private platform YouGov, in April 2023. Our web questionnaire explored knowledge of PM, willingness to embrace it, and trust in information delivered by mass media. Results Of 6,581 respondents, approximately 42% lacked sufficient knowledge of PM and genetic testing, while 36.3% found information about the topic not easily accessible. Healthcare providers were the most trusted source of information (according to 80% of responders), followed by educational institutions (71.4%). Education, age, and gender significantly influenced the acceptance of PM and mass media trust, highlighting the association between high education level, readiness to embrace PM, and high trust in academic sources of information. Additionally, age, gender, and geographical location influenced the perception of PM and genetic tests in various ways across Europe. Despite the geographical differences, 63.2% of respondents want to know more about PM, and 60% support its implementation in clinical practice. Conclusions Although the growing interest in PM genetic, and -omics technologies, large sections of the population still lack access to information and understanding, indicating a disconnection between technological advancements and public awareness. The study emphasizes the importance of providing focused citizen engagement initiatives to implement PM approaches. Citizen participation in defining personalised diagnostic and therapeutic pathways is vital to empower individuals and enable them to make informed health choices. Key messages • Understanding European citizens’ attitudes and needs regarding Personalised Medicine is crucial for creating policies and facilitating access to new technologies and treatments. • Despite limited knowledge, European Citizen recognize the importance of Personalised Medicine for their health, seek further understanding, and place trust in Academic Sources of Information.

Given geographical disparities in vaccination coverage (VC) and the crucial role general practitioners (GPs) play in vaccination in France, we sought to: 1) determine the existence of geographical variations in GPs' perceptions of vaccines, their trust in information sources, and the frequency of their recommendations to patients by comparing data from southeast (SE), central-west (CW), northwest (NW), and the rest of France; and 2) identify individual and contextual factors associated with regional variations in GPs' recommendations. This cross-sectional observational study in 2014 collected data from a panel of 2586 French GPs in private practice: 3 specific regional samples and a fourth sample for the rest of France. We calculated a composite score summarizing GPs' vaccine recommendation frequency for 6 vaccine situations and used a five-step hierarchical linear regression to study the score's links with practice location and individual and contextual factors. GPs' vaccine recommendation frequency score was highest in NW France and lowest in the SE. The low SE score was explained by GPs' greater doubts about vaccine utility and risks and lower trust in information sources. The high NW score was partially explained by greater adherence to guidelines by GPs there. The contextual factors studied did not explain regional differences. The geographical variations in GPs' vaccination-related attitudes and practices suggest that vaccine hesitancy among GPs differs in prevalence between regions. These variations coincide with north/south trends in population VC. Intervention strategies to restore confidence in vaccines should target GPs and must be adapted to each regional context.

We present a concept of trust that integrates the truster’s goal, the trustee’s action that ensures the achievement of the truster’s goal, and the trustee’s ability and intention to do this action. This concept of trust is formalized in modal logic and is applied to the particular domain of trust in information sources. In this context trust may be derived, in particular, from the truster’s beliefs about some properties of the information source: validity, completeness, sincerity, competence, vigilance and cooperativity. In the last part of the paper we move beyond binary trust (i.e. either i trusts j or i does not trust j) in order to capture a concept of graded trust.

Unverified information concerning COVID-19 can affect mental health. Understanding perceived trust in information sources and associated mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic is vital to ensure ongoing media coverage of the crisis does not exacerbate mental health impacts. A number of studies have been conducted in other parts of the world to determine associations between information exposure relating to COVID-19 and mental health. However, the mechanism by which trust in information sources may affect mental health is not fully explained in the developing country context. To address this issue, the present study examined associations between perceived trust in three sources of information concerning COVID-19 and anxiety/stress with the mediating effects of COVID-19 stress in Bangladesh. An online cross-sectional study was conducted with 744 Bangladeshi adults between 17 April and 1 May 2020. Perceived trust in traditional, social, and health media for COVID-19 information, demographics, frontline service status, COVID-19-related stressors, anxiety (GAD-7), and stress (PSS-4) were assessed via self-report. Linear regression tested for associations between perceived trust and mental health. Mediation analyses investigated whether COVID-19-related stressors affected perceived trust and mental health associations. In fully adjusted models, more trust in social media was associated with more anxiety (B = 0.03, CI = 0.27–0.97) and stress (B = 0.01, CI = −0.34–0.47), while more trust in traditional media was associated with more anxiety (B = 0.09, CI = 0.17–2.26) but less stress (B = −0.08, CI = −0.89–0.03). Mediation analyses showed that COVID-19-related stressors partially explained associations between perceived trust and anxiety. These findings suggest that trusting social media to provide accurate COVID-19 information may exacerbate poor mental health. These findings also indicate that trusting traditional media (i.e., television, radio, and the newspaper) may have stress-buffering effects. We recommend that responsible authorities call attention to concerns about the trustworthiness of social media as well as broadcast positive and authentic news in traditional media outcomes based on these results.
