What ethics integration looks like in neuroscience research.
Advances in connectomics and the characterization of neuronal diversity have been fundamental to understanding how the brain works. Defining a taxonomy is still challenging and requires complex computational methods. In this paper, we present a systematic review of the state-of-the-art methods for neuronal morphology classification, shedding light on trends and future directions. We address three core research questions: (1) What computational methods are used to classify neuronal morphologies? (2) What kind of representation do the classification models work on? (3) How are the classification models evaluated? We applied a structured protocol including peer-reviewed studies published since 2018. We collected 840 papers from five databases, published between 2018 and 2024. We assessed risk of bias using predefined quality criteria on study design, methodology, and reporting; 35 studies met these standards and were included to extract information and consolidate the results. The results show that Artificial Neural Networks are currently the main method for classifying neurons based on morphometric features (21 papers). Representations based on microscopy images for extracting morphometric features (30) are commonly used. Accuracy (29) is the predominant evaluation measure. Our research findings contribute to the body of knowledge by providing an up-to-date perspective on neuronal classification, which can guide future research in neuroscience and related fields.

How Authors' Minds Make Stories
This book explores how the creations of great authors result from the same operations as our everyday counterfactual and hypothetical imaginations, which cognitive scientists refer to as 'simulations'. Drawing on detailed literary analyses as well as recent research in neuroscience and related fields, Patrick Colm Hogan develops a rigorous theory of the principles governing simulation that goes beyond any existing framework. He examines the functions and mechanisms of narrative imagination, with particular attention to the role of theory of mind, and relates this analysis to narrative universals. In the course of this theoretical discussion, Hogan explores works by Austen, Faulkner, Shakespeare, Racine, Brecht, Kafka and Calvino. He pays particular attention to the principles and parameters defining an author's narrative idiolect, examining the cognitive and emotional continuities that span an individual author's body of work.

There are no randomized controlled trials comparing retrogasserian percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation, glycerol rhizolysis, balloon compression of the gasserian ganglion, and stereotactic radiosurgery, nor are there systematic reviews using predefined quality criteria. The objective of this study was to systematically identify all of the studies reporting outcomes and complications of ablative techniques for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, from the development of electronic databases, and to evaluate them with predefined quality criteria. Inclusion criteria for the outcome analysis included thorough demographic documentation, defined diagnostic and outcome criteria, a minimum of 30 patients treated and median/mean follow-up times of 12 months, not more than 20% of patients lost to follow-up monitoring, Kaplan-Meier actuarial analysis of individual procedures, less than 10% of patients retreated because of failure or early recurrence, and a minimal dose of 70 Gy for stereotactic radiosurgery. High-quality studies with no actuarial analysis were used for the evaluation of complications. Of 175 studies identified, 9 could be used to evaluate rates of complete pain relief on a yearly basis and 22 could be used to evaluate complications. In mixed series, radiofrequency thermocoagulation offered higher rates of complete pain relief, compared with glycerol rhizolysis and stereotactic radiosurgery, although it demonstrated the greatest number of complications. Radiofrequency thermocoagulation offers the highest rates of complete pain relief, although further data on balloon microcompression are required. It is essential that uniform outcome measures and actuarial methods be universally adopted for the reporting of surgical results. Randomized controlled trials are required to reliably evaluate new surgical techniques.

The quality of crossmodal perception hinges on two factors: The accuracy of the independent unimodal perception and the ability to integrate information from different sensory systems. In humans, the ability for cognitively demanding crossmodal perception diminishes from young to old age. Here, we propose a new approach to research to which degree the different factors contribute to crossmodal processing and the age-related decline by replicating a medical study on visuo-tactile crossmodal pattern discrimination utilizing state-of-the-art tactile sensing technology and artificial neural networks (ANN). We implemented two ANN models to specifically focus on the relevance of early integration of sensory information during the crossmodal processing stream as a mechanism proposed for efficient processing in the human brain. Applying an adaptive staircase procedure, we approached comparable unimodal classification performance for both modalities in the human participants as well as the ANN. This allowed us to compare crossmodal performance between and within the systems, independent of the underlying unimodal processes. Our data show that unimodal classification accuracies of the tactile sensing technology are comparable to humans. For crossmodal discrimination of the ANN the integration of high-level unimodal features on earlier stages of the crossmodal processing stream shows higher accuracies compared to the late integration of independent unimodal classifications. In comparison to humans, the ANN show higher accuracies than older participants in the unimodal as well as the crossmodal condition, but lower accuracies than younger participants in the crossmodal task. Taken together, we can show that state-of-the-art tactile sensing technology is able to perform a complex tactile recognition task at levels comparable to humans. For crossmodal processing, human inspired early sensory integration seems to improve the performance of artificial neural networks. Still, younger participants seem to employ more efficient crossmodal integration mechanisms than modeled in the proposed ANN. Our work demonstrates how collaborative research in neuroscience and embodied artificial neurocognitive models can help to derive models to inform the design of future neurocomputational architectures.

To predict the gamma passing rate (GPR) in dosimetric verification of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) using three machine learning models based on plan complexity and find the best prediction model by comparing and evaluating the prediction ability of the regression and classification models of three classical algorithms: artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF). 269 clinical IMRT plans were chosen retrospectively and the GPRs of a total of 2340 fields by the 2%/2mm standard at the threshold of 10% were collected for dosimetric verification using electronic portal imaging device (EPID). Subsequently, the plan complexity feature values of each field were extracted and calculated, and a total of 6 machine learning models (classification and regression models for three algorithms) were trained to learn the relation between 21 plan complexity features and GPRs. Each model was optimized by tuning the hyperparameters and ten-fold cross validation. Finally, the GPRs predicted by the model were compared with measured values to verify the accuracy of the model, and the evaluation indicators were applied to evaluate each model to find the algorithm with the best prediction performance. The RF algorithm had the optimal prediction effect on GPR, and its mean absolute error (MAE) on the test set was 1.81%, root mean squared error (RMSE) was 2.14%, and correlation coefficient (CC) was 0.72; SVM was the second and ANN was the worst. Among the classification models, the RF algorithm also had the optimal prediction performance with the highest area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.80, specificity and sensitivity of 0.80 and 0.68 respectively, followed by SVM and the worst ANN. All the three classic algorithms, ANN, SVM, and RF, could realize the prediction and classification of GPR. The RF model based on plan complexity had the optimal prediction performance which could save valuable time for quality control workers to improve quality control efficiency.

Machine learning has become useful in daily life thanks to improvements in machine learning techniques. Text classification as an important part in machine learning. There are already many methods used for text classification such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Naïve Bayes, SVM, Decision Tree etc. ANN is a branch in machine learning which approximate the function of natural neural network. ANN have been used extensively for classification. In this research a simple architecture of ANN is used. But it needs to be pointed out that the architecture used in this research is relatively simple compared to the cutting edge in ANN development and research to show the potential that ANN have compared to other classification method. ANN, Naïve Bayes and SVM performance are measured using f1-macro. Performance of classification model is measured of multiple single-label and multi-label dataset. This research found that in single-label classification ANN have a comparable f1-macro with 0.79 compared to 0.82 for SVM. In multi-label classification ANN have the best f1-macro with 0.48 compared to 0.44 in SVM.
Read moreThe structure dilemma in biological and artificial neural networks
Brain research up to date has revealed that structure and function are highly related. Thus, for example, studies have repeatedly shown that the brains of patients suffering from schizophrenia or other diseases have a different connectome compared to healthy people. Apart from stochastic processes, however, an inherent logic describing how neurons connect to each other has not yet been identified. We revisited this structural dilemma by comparing and analyzing artificial and biological-based neural networks. Namely, we used feed-forward and recurrent artificial neural networks as well as networks based on the structure of the micro-connectome of C. elegans and of the human macro-connectome. We trained these diverse networks, which markedly differ in their architecture, initialization and pruning technique, and we found remarkable parallels between biological-based and artificial neural networks, as we were additionally able to show that the dilemma is also present in artificial neural networks. Our findings show that structure contains all the information, but that this structure is not exclusive. Indeed, the same structure was able to solve completely different problems with only minimal adjustments. We particularly put interest on the influence of weights and the neuron offset value, as they show a different adaption behaviour. Our findings open up new questions in the fields of artificial and biological information processing research.

The economic crisis could take place all over again. It can be prevented and overcome by forecasting economic conditions. The common way to forecast economic conditions is to measure economic growth using inflation-adjusted Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or real GDP. Economic growth gives information about how well the economy performed. Prediction using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is commonly used. ANN is a computational system inspired by the works of a human brain. The difference between ANN and other computational method is that ANN can solve highly complex and nonlinear problems. Interest in using ANN for forecasting has led to a tremendous surge in research activities in the past decade. ANN provides great prediction result and better accuracy compared to other methods for non-linear variable relations. This research purpose is to predict the Indonesian economic growth by using macroeconomic variables as a good reflection of the economic condition. Prediction with ANN has 95.81% of forecast accuracy and 4.19% of forecast error with the best ANN configuration using 2N+1 formula. Based on accuracy, the ANN method using macroeconomic indicators such as consumption, investment, government expenditure, gross export and gross import is the best way to forecast economic growth.

Medical image analysis has become a topic under the spotlight in recent years. There is a significant progress in medical image research concerning the usage of machine learning. However, there are still numerous questions and problems awaiting answers and solutions, respectively. In the present study, comparison of three classification models is conducted using features extracted using local binary patterns, the histogram of gradients, and a pre-trained deep network. Three common image classification methods, including support vector machines, decision trees, and artificial neural networks are used to classify feature vectors obtained by different feature extractors. We use KIMIA Path960, a publicly available dataset of 960 histopathology images extracted from 20 different tissue scans to test the accuracy of classification and feature extractions models used in the study, specifically for the histopathology images. SVM achieves the highest accuracy of 90.52% using local binary patterns as features which surpasses the accuracy obtained by deep features, namely 81.14%.
Read moreHandling Missing Data Using Combination of Deletion Technique, Mean, Mode and Artificial Neural Network Imputation for Heart Disease Dataset
The University of California Irvine Heart disease dataset had missing data on several attributes. The missing data can loss the important information of the attributes, but it cannot be deleted immediately on dataset. To handle missing data, there are several ways including deletion, imputation by mean, mode, or with prediction methods. In this study, the missing data were handled by deletion technique if the attribute had more than 70% missing data. Otherwise, it were handled by mean and mode method to impute missing data that had missing data less or equal 1%. The artificial neural network was used to handle the attribute that had missing data more than 1%. The results of the techniques and methods used to handle missing data were measured based on the performance results of the classification method on data that has been handled the problem of missing data. In this study the classification method used is Artificial Neural Network, Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine, and K-Nearest Neighbor. The performance results of classification methods without handling missing data were compared with the performance results of classification methods after imputation missing data on dataset for accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and ROC. In addition, the comparison of the Mean Squared Error results was also used to see how close the predicted label in the classification was to the original label. The lowest Mean Squared Error wasobtained by Artificial Neural Network, which means that the Artificial Neural Network worked very well on dataset that has been handled missing data compared to other methods. The result of accuracy, specificity, sensitivity in each classification method showed that imputation missing data could increase the performance of classification, especially for the Artificial Neural Network method.

Background: Clinical data play an important role in medical sector for binary outcome variables. Various methods can be applied to build predictive models for the clinical data with binary outcome variables. Objective: This research was aimed to explore and compare the process of constructing common predictive models.Methodology: Models based on an artificial neural network (the connectionist approach) and binary logistic regressions were compared in their ability to classifying malnourished subjects and those with over-weighted participants in rural areas of Bangladesh. Subjects were classified according to the indicator of nutritional status measured by body mass index (BMI). This study also investigated the effects of different factors on the BMI level of adults of six Villages in Bangladesh. Demographic, anthropometric and clinical data were collected based on aged over 30 years from six Villages in Bangladesh that were identified as mainly dependent on wells contaminated with arsenic.Result: A total of 460 participants were recruited for this study. Out of 460(140 male and 320 females) participants 186(40.44%) were identified as malnourished (BMK18.5 gm), and the remainder 274(59.56%) were found as over-weighted (BMI>18.5 gm). Among other factors, arsenic exposures were found as significant risk factors for low body mass index (BMI) with a higher value of odds ratio. This study shows that, binary logistic regression correctly classified 72.85% of cases with malnourished in the training datasets, 76.08% in the testing datasets and 75.26% of all subjects. The sensitivities of the neural network architecture for the training and testing datasets and for all subjects were 84.28%, 84.78% and 81 .72% respectively, indicate better performance than binary logistic regression model. Conclusion: This study demonstrates a significant performance of artificial neural network than the binary logistic regression models in classification of malnourished participants from over-weighted ones.J Shaheed Suhrawardy Med Coll, 2014; 6(2):71-75
Read moreA Feature Extraction Intelligent Music Genre Classification Method Based on Deep Learning Technology
In the task of music genre classification, feature extraction and classifier modeling are the two key parts that directly affect the classification accuracy. In the traditional classification method, the feature extraction and classification processes are designed separately. First, the features are extracted manually from the original music signal, and then a reasonable classifier is selected to build a model and classify the extracted features. Although the traditional methods have achieved good results in many classification tasks, the feature extraction process is complex and difficult to achieve, and the features required for different classification tasks need to be specially designed, and the extracted features lack of universality. With the successful application and continuous development of deep learning models in other fields, more and more studies begin to use music spectra as the input of deep learning models to classify music genres. However, so far, the accuracy of existing classification methods based on deep learning is not ideal, so this paper mainly studies a classification method based on deep learning to improve the classification accuracy of music genre classification model. In this paper, a parallel structured deep attention classification model is proposed. By training BRNN, it can automatically learn music features from samples. The linear attention model calculates the attention probability distribution on this feature according to the learned features, and reassigns it to the feature representation. Finally, the classification is realized according to the eigenvectors with different weights. Besides the linear attention model with simple structure, a CNN attention model with stronger learning ability is also designed. In order to verify the feasibility and validity of the model, validation experiments were conducted on two standard datasets, GTZAN and Extended Ballroom. The experimental results show that the classification model based on deep parallel attention mechanism has good classification robustness, and the accuracy of classification based on BRNN and parallel CNN attention model reaches 92.7% on Extended Ballroom data set, which is better than the existing classification method based on deep learning. The validity and feasibility of the classification model are proved.

Improvement of phone recognition accuracy using speech mode classification
In this work, we have developed a speech mode classification model for improving the performance of phone recognition system (PRS). In this paper, we have explored vocal tract system, excitation source and prosodic features for development of speech mode classification (SMC) model. These features are extracted from voiced regions of a speech signal. In this study, conversation, extempore, and read speech are considered as three different modes of speech. The vocal tract component of speech is extracted using Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs). The excitation source features are captured through Mel power differences of spectrum in sub-bands (MPDSS) and residual Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (RMFCCs) of the speech signal. The prosody information is extracted from pitch and intensity. Speech mode classification models are developed using above described features independently, and in fusion. The experiments carried out on Bengali speech corpus to analyze the accuracy of the speech mode classification model using the artificial neural network (ANN), naive Bayes, support vector machines (SVMs) and k-nearest neighbor (KNN). We proposed four classification models which are combined using maximum voting approach for optimal performance. From the results, it is observed that speech mode classification model developed using the fusion of vocal tract system, excitation source and prosodic features of speech, yields the best performance of 98%. Finally, the proposed speech mode classifier is integrated to the PRS, and the accuracy of phone recognition system is observed to be improved by 11.08%.
Read moreStudy on material behaviours of additively manufactured high-impact polystyrene using artificial neural networks
Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), a process parameters-dependent manufacturing method, currently dominates the additive manufacturing (AM) sector because of its prominent ability to produce parts with intricate profiles, customise products, and minimise waste. Though the effects of FFF process parameters were investigated experimentally, recent research highlighted the importance of developing numerical modelling and computational methods on optimising the FFF printing process and FFF-printed materials. This study aims to investigate the tensile strength (TS) of FFF-printed high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) via devising a systematic testing and analysis framework, which combines experimental testing, representative volume element (RVE)-finite element method (FEM), rule of mixture (ROM), and artificial neural networks (ANN). HIPS samples are fabricated using FFF considering the variations of infill density, layer thickness, nozzle temperature, raster angle, and build orientation, and tested with standard tensile testing. The rule of mixtures (ROM) and its modified version (MROM) are employed to calculate the TS of longitudinally and transversely built samples at various infill densities, respectively, while an ANN model is constructed to investigate the effect of material anisotropy precisely. The optimal ANN architecture is built with five hidden layers with the number of neurons in each layer as 44, 82, 169, 362, and 50. Although both MROM and ANN perform well on the validation set, ANN exhibits superior accuracy with only a maximum error of 0.13% for training set and 11% for validation set. The combination of the RVE-FEM, MROM, and ANN approaches can significantly improve the FFF printing process of polymers for optimisation.
