Incorporating Global Characteristic Data into Virtual Product Development Models

The automation of manufacturing systems is one of the most important aspects that need to be taken care of during a design process. The Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools allow for the designing of automated systems even before acquiring all the hardware and/or software. This paper shows the use of this PLM kind of tools for mixing virtual and real components on an automated manufacturing system through the implementation of four different case scenarios: using the real process/real controller to the virtual process/virtual controller, real process/real controller to real process/virtual controller and finally, virtual process/real controller to virtual process/virtual controller. These scenarios will be described along with their purposes and the tools used to achieve them. Dassault Systemes DELMIA Automation is used as a PLM tool and is combined with the hardware and software required to achieve each case scenario. The case study used is the Flexible Manufacturing System in the Mechatronics laboratory at the Tecnologico de Monterrey; it’s also presented an implementation of these scenarios in a Manufacturing Systems Automation laboratory class. This study examines students’ use of technology for learning compared to more traditional learning methods. Results suggest that there is more than one good way to learn.

Most thoughtful way to sustain in this competitive highly regulated Pharma generic industry environment is depended on understanding the concept of the product life cycle management (PLCM). Fact is a very less number of Pharma professionals have been familiarized them with this fascinating strategic concept. So, it’s the time now to convey that what does this PLCM means and how to put it into work. The objective of this article is to convey the use of PLCM as a strategic concept for enhancing drug’s sustainability in market for a long time, making better business decisions, enhancing profitability and finally delivering affordable, quality embedded generic drugs to customers. Also, in this manuscript an attempt has been made to compare corresponding regulatory agencies (US, EU, Canada and India) insights and view on preference of PLCM application. By careful analysis, it’s revealed that US provides most favourable environment to employ various PLCM strategies, wherein EU is equally good, nonetheless national polices could be a barrier, Canada is difficult to comprehend due to stringent laws and limited exclusivity and as of now India has least scope for PLCM application.

Since 1990, the ever-increasing sales trend of automobiles in Indonesia has made the competition atmosphere much fiercer, particularly for Multi-Purpose Vehicle, the car segment with the highest sales in Indonesia’s automobile market. Therefore, a product life cycle management of automobiles is demanded to secure current position in market or further, to lead the market. This research uses MPV Model A and MPV Model B as a study case for Multi-Purpose Vehicle. Methods deployed are the computation of product line extension, the computation of product line innovation, t-test, Person Index Test, and Importance-Performance Analysis. Results are used to formulate product life cycle management strategies for automobiles of Multi-Purpose Vehicle aimed secure current position in market or further, to lead the market.

Project-based collaborative engineering learning to develop Industry 4.0 skills within a PLM framework

The relationship between system theory and the product design, the process of product development has been described. It compared the merits and demerits of serial and parallel product development processes and, with the guidelines of system theory, put forward and analyzed the planning actions and corresponding necessity existed in the indistinct initial phase in product development process. It also analyzed the optimizing effect of planning actions in product design & development process. Thus, it obtained the model of product design & development process based on system theory so as to clarify the indistinct initial phase, shorten product development time and, improve the effectiveness of enterprise's product development.

Decision data model in virtual product development

Today’s hyper-competitive worldwide markets, turbulent environment, demanding customers, and diverse technological advancements force any companies developing new products to look into all the possible areas of improvement in the entire new product development (NPD) process. As a key determinant of firm’s competitiveness, efficient NPD is hard to imagine out of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) strategy. In fact, PLM provides a dynamic and integrated information management platform that enables firms to effectively manage the creation, modification, and exchange with product information on the collaborative NPD. Moreover, by adopting PLM systems, firms can derive numerous benefits such as increasing the speed to market of new products, improving the response to market demands, delivering more new products in a shorter time, reducing product development project costs, and reducing material and energy consumption costs. Hence, this paper presents an overview that mediates the effect of PLM system on NPD performance. Therefore, it is expected that the results will contribute to the literature and practice by increasing the understanding of how PLM system influences NPD performance.

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) capabilities such as concurrent development, seamless integration, simultaneous engineering, single source database, and real-time visibility have long been capable within the automotive development process. However, the reality is that these tools have existed for a select few within a corporation, and have never been pervasive to every person involved in a product’s development process.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Today, there are certain market drivers requiring more from PLM technology. This includes the fact that companies must drive innovation to survive in today’s increasingly competitive and global auto industry. The next generation of 3D PLM tools, referred to as PLM 2.0 can bring real-time, global collaboration to life with features such as a single PLM platform for Intellectual Property (IP) management (one database and one server), and the open Server-Oriented Architecture (SOA) development platform. With only a web connection, product authoring and collaboration are enabled for real time, concurrent work, across multiple remote locations all in a 3D lifelike environment.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">This presentation will point out how by expanding 3D PLM beyond engineering and manufacturing to include everyone who has a role in the life of a vehicle from business users to end consumers, vehicles will be developed in a shorter time frame, and better-suited to the public desires, with improvements made along the whole product development process.</div>

A decision support system for design of mass production machining lines composed of stations with rotary or mobile table

In order to reduce product development (PD) costs and duration, PD cycles are being accelerated in order to reduce the time to market and satisfy the end customer needs. Another key challenge in PD today, is product diversification in the technologies used, requiring improved collaboration amongst local and dispersed multi disciple PD teams. A main stream tool that aids and support engineers in PD to collaborate and share information/knowledge is Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). This research explores the benefits and requirements of implementing a PLM system for a PD and manufacturing company within the automotive supply chain. This paper first provides a brief background of the subject area, followed by an explanation of the initial industrial investigation for the implementation of a PLM system, from which investigation the resulting conclusions and recommendations are presented as the building blocks of the implementation project.

Implications of Service-related Business Models on Product Development Processes

Process planning for collaborative product development with CD-DSM in optoelectronic enterprises

The objective of this paper is to discuss future developments and potentials for Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, based on a new theory-based approach to modelling products and product development processes ('Property-Driven Development/Design', PDD). A special focus is placed on the management and control of the product development process.

Introduction: To achieve competitive advantage, a company must permanently innovate and change its products, process and management systems faster than competitors. In manufacturing companies, as new products become the focus in competition, the new product development (NPD) process become increasingly important to these businesses. NPD process can be improved by boosting product lifecycle knowledge management. In this paper, how to carry out this improvement is described through a case study of a naval shipbuilding firm, Navantia. Methods: In the detailed case study, the improvement needs are identified from a knowledge management based approach and the solutions developed are described. These solutions are provided by a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system by means of its tools and its integration with other management systems used in Navantia. Results: The integration of knowledge in the company has lead to access and sharing information time reduction; errors reduction; improvements in the communication among employees and with partners, customers and suppliers; and design time and product costs reduction. Discussion: This case provides several keys to a successful implementation of a PLM system, such as making a reasoned analysis of the needs of the company from a strategic knowledge management based approach, the gradual integration of existing tools with the system PLM and the involvement of different actors in the company, both at organizational and interorganizational level.

New Product Development (NDP) is a major source of competitive advantage to automobile manufacturers. More specifically, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) has proven to have a positive impact on the effectiveness of the product development effort. One of the many reasons for that is the fact that PLM requires detailed attention to the constraints a firm will face, depending on the stage of the product. Widely accepted references outline the important of decision making in PLM. This trend is also is reinforced by the number of research projects in known, global centers of excellence in product development and innovation. Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) approach is in the stake to supply the plan to best use of resources allocated to the project. Another revered trend is the idea of integrating the whole supply chain from a value-adding perspective. Thus, the Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Manufacuturing Engineering Systemas (MES) of current and new suppliers for newly developed parts or products are the key players for the competitiveness in the market. Conversely, strategies, methodologies, and PLM tools present themselves as agile, lean, safe yet collaborative approach to NPD. This paper presents an integration of ERP into PLM with a special emphasis on SCM. The automobile industry, as an example is to contextualize the discussion.
