Independence of ℓ of monodromy groups

Let X X be a complete smooth variety defined over a number field K K and let i i be an integer. The absolute Galois group G a l K \mathrm {Gal}_K of K K acts on the i i th étale cohomology group H e ´ t i ( X K ¯ , Q ℓ ) H^i_{\mathrm {\acute {e}t}}(X_{\bar K},\mathbb {Q}_\ell ) for all primes ℓ \ell , producing a system of ℓ \ell -adic representations { Φ ℓ } ℓ \{\Phi _\ell \}_\ell . The conjectures of Grothendieck, Tate, and Mumford-Tate predict that the identity component of the algebraic monodromy group of Φ ℓ \Phi _\ell admits a reductive Q \mathbb {Q} -form that is independent of ℓ \ell if X X is projective. Denote by Γ ℓ \Gamma _\ell and G ℓ \mathbf {G}_\ell respectively the monodromy group and the algebraic monodromy group of Φ ℓ s s \Phi _\ell ^{\mathrm {ss}} , the semisimplification of Φ ℓ \Phi _\ell . Assuming that G ℓ 0 \mathbf {G}_{\ell _0} satisfies some group theoretic conditions for some prime ℓ 0 \ell _0 , we construct a connected quasi-split Q \mathbb {Q} -reductive group G Q \mathbf {G}_{\mathbb {Q}} which is a common Q \mathbb {Q} -form of G ℓ ∘ \mathbf {G}_\ell ^\circ for all sufficiently large ℓ \ell . Let G Q s c \mathbf {G}_{\mathbb {Q}}^{\mathrm {sc}} be the universal cover of the derived group of G Q \mathbf {G}_{\mathbb {Q}} . As an application, we prove that the monodromy group Γ ℓ \Gamma _\ell is big in the sense that Γ ℓ s c ≅ G Q s c ( Z ℓ ) \Gamma _\ell ^{\mathrm {sc}}\cong \mathbf {G}_{\mathbb {Q}}^{\mathrm {sc}}(\mathbb {Z}_\ell ) for all sufficiently large ℓ \ell .

The original Novikov conjecture concerns the (oriented) homotopy invariance of higher sig-natures of manifolds and is equivalent to the rational injectivity of the assembly map in surgery theory. The integral injectivity of the assembly map is important for other purposes and is called the integral Novikov conjecture. There are also assembly maps in other theories and hence re-lated Novikov and integral Novikov conjectures. In this paper, we discuss several results on the integral Novikov conjectures for all torsion free arithmetic subgroups of linear algebraic groups and all S-arithmetic subgroups of reductive linear algebraic groups over number fields. For re-ductive linear algebraic groups over function fields of rank 0, the integral Novikov conjecture also holds for all torsion-free S-arithmetic subgroups. Since groups containing torsion elements occur naturally and frequently, we also discuss a generalized integral Novikov conjecture for groups containing torsion elements, and prove it for all arithmetic subgroups of reductive linear algebraic groups over number fields and S-arithmetic subgroups of reductive algebraic groups of rank 0 over function fields. 1

Let G be a reductive algebraic group over Q and Γ⊂G(Q) an arithmetic subgroup. Let K∞⊂G(R) be a maximal compact subgroup. We study the asymptotic behavior of the counting functions of the cuspidal and residual spectrum, respectively, of the regular representation of G(R) in L2(Γ﹨G(R)) of a fixed K∞-type σ. A conjecture, which is due to Sarnak, states that the counting function of the cuspidal spectrum of type σ satisfies Weyl's law and the residual spectrum is of lower order growth. Using the Arthur trace formula we reduce the conjecture to a problem about L-functions occurring in the constant terms of Eisenstein series. If G satisfies property (L), introduced by Finis and Lapid, we establish the conjecture. This includes classical groups over a number field.

We prove that the number of unimodular integral n × n matrices in a norm ball whose characteristic polynomial has Galois group different than the full symmetric group Sn is of strictly lower order of magnitude than the number of all such matrices in the ball, as the radius increases. More generally, we prove a similar result for the Galois groups associated with elements in any connected semisimple linear algebraic group defined and simple over a number field F . Our method is based on the abstract large sieve method developed by Kowalski, and the study of Galois groups via reductions modulo primes developed by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina. The two key ingredients are a uniform quantitative lattice point counting result, and a non-concentration phenomenon for lattice points in algebraic subvarieties of the group variety, both established previously by the authors. The results answer a question posed by Rivin and by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina, who have considered Galois groups of random products of elements in algebraic groups.

Let G be a split reductive group over a local field K, and let G((t)) be the corresponding loop group. In [1], we have introduced the notion of a representation of (the group of K-points) of G((t)) on a pro-vector space. In addition, we have defined an induction procedure, which produced G((t))-representations from usual smooth representations of G. We have conjectured that the induction of a cuspidal irreducible representation of G is irreducible. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for G=SL2.

In [1], Borel discussed discrete arithmetic groups arising from quaternion algebras over number fields with particular reference to arithmetic Kleinian and arithmetic Fuchsian groups. In these cases, he described, in each commensurability class, a class of groups which contains all maximal groups. Developing results on embedding commutative orders of the defining number field into maximal or Eichler orders in the defining quaternion algebra, Chinburg and Friedman [2] stated necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of torsion in this class of groups in terms of the defining arithmetic data. This was more fully explored in the case of Kleinian groups in [3]. In the case of Fuchsian groups, these results on the existence of torsion were extended to obtain formulas for the number of conjugacy classes of finite cyclic subgroups for each group in this class [8, 9]. In this paper, we examine, across the range of arithmetic Fuchsian groups, how widespread torsion is in maximal Fuchsian groups. Some studies in low genus cases (see e.g. [7, 12]) indicate that 2-torsion is very prevalent. The results obtained here substantiate that but we will also obtain maximal arithmetic Fuchsian groups which are torsion-free. Let K be a number field, P the set of prime numbers, and {ρ`}`∈P a compatible system (in the sense of Serre [19]) of semisimple, n-dimensional `-adic representations of Gal(K/K). Denote the Zariski closure of ρ`(Gal(K/K)) in GLn,Q` by G` and its Lie algebra by g`. It is known that the identity component G ◦ ` is reductive and the formal character of the tautological representation G` ↪→ GLn,Q` is independent of ` (Serre). We use the theory of abelian `-adic representations to prove that the formal character of the tautological representation of the derived group (G` ) der ↪→ GLn,Q` is likewise independent of `. By investigating the geometry of weights of this faithful representation, we prove that the semisimple parts of g` ⊗ C satisfy an equal-rank subalgebra equivalence for all ` which is equivalent to the number of An := sln+1,C factors for n ∈ {6, 9, 10, 11, ...} and the parity of the number of A4 factors in g` ⊗ C are independent of `.

Superstability and central extensions of algebraic groups

Let X be a subgroup of a group Y. The \\emphinterval (X, Y) is the set of subgroups of Y that contain X including X and Y. By local class field theory the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains a finite number of norm groups for any finite extension K of a 𝔭-adic number field k. In the present work we investigate the number of norm groups in the interval (N K/k K*, k*) for a given finite extension K/k of algebraic number fields. We prove that if K/k is an extension of prime degree, or of degree n such that the normal closure of K over k has the Galois group isomorphic to A n or S n , then the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains only the obvious two norm groups. Also, the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains a finite number of norm groups for any Galois extension of degree 4, and there are extensions with Galois groups order 8 for which the corresponding intervals contain a finite number of norm groups. The main theorem in our earlier work states that the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains infinitely many norm groups for any Galois extension of even degree that is not a 2-extension, the so-called 2𝔫-\\emphextensions. In the present work we generalize the main theorem to non-Galois 2𝔫-extensions K/k, and determine some subintervals of (N K/k K*, k*) that contain infinitely many norm groups. We then use this theorem to prove that the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains infinitely many norm groups for any Galois 2-extension K/k with the Galois group that either contains an element of order 8 or contains the quaternion group Q8 of order 8, or Q8 is a homomorphic image of the Galois group.

We consider a large family of dynamical Belyi maps of arbitrary degree and study the arithmetic monodromy groups attached to the iterates of such maps. Building on the results of Bouw-Ejder-Karemaker on the geometric monodromy groups of these maps, we show that the quotient of the arithmetic monodromy group by the geometric monodromy group has order either 1 1 or 2 2 . Prior to this article, a result of this kind was only known for quadratic maps (Pink) and a few examples in degree 3 3 .

A linear étale representation of a complex algebraic group G is given by a complex algebraic G-module V such that G has a Zariski-open orbit in V and $\dim G=\dim V$ . A current line of research investigates which reductive algebraic groups admit such étale representations, with a focus on understanding common features of étale representations. One source of new examples arises from the classification theory of nilpotent orbits in semisimple Lie algebras. We survey what is known about reductive algebraic groups with étale representations and then discuss two classical constructions for nilpotent orbit classifications due to Vinberg and to Bala and Carter. We determine which reductive groups and étale representations arise in these constructions and we work out in detail the relation between these two constructions.

We classify all one-class genera of admissible lattice chains of length at least 2 in hermitian spaces over number fields. If L is a lattice in the chain and \(\mathfrak {p} \) the prime ideal dividing the index of the lattices in the chain, then the \(\{ \mathfrak {p} \} \)-arithmetic group \(\mathrm {Aut} (L_{ \{ \mathfrak {p} \} }) \) acts chamber transitively on the corresponding Bruhat-Tits building. So our classification provides a step forward to a complete classification of these chamber transitive groups which has been announced 1987 (without a detailed proof) by Kantor, Liebler and Tits. In fact we find all their groups over number fields and one additional building with a discrete chamber transitive group.

A K3 surface over a number field has infinitely many rational points over a finite field extension. For K3 surfaces of degree 2, arising as double covers of P2 branched along a smooth sextic curve, we give a bound for the degree of such an extension. Moreover, using ideas of van Luijk and a surface constructed by Elsenhans and Jahnel, we give an explicit family of K3 surfaces of degree 2 defined over Q with geometric Picard number 1 and infinitely many Q-rational points that is Zariski dense in the moduli space of K3 surfaces of degree 2.

Let [Formula: see text] be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least three, defined over the field of real numbers. Let [Formula: see text] be a connected reductive affine algebraic group, defined over [Formula: see text], such that [Formula: see text] is nonabelian and has one simple factor. We prove that the isomorphism class of the moduli space of principal [Formula: see text]-bundles on [Formula: see text] determine uniquely the isomorphism class of [Formula: see text].

Let G be the group of points of a split reductive algebraic group G over a local field k and let X = G / U where U is the group of k-points of a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. In this paper we construct a certain canonical G-invariant space \({\cal S}(X)\) (called the Schwartz space of X) of functions on X, which is an extension of the space of smooth compactly supported functions on X. We show that the space of all elements of \( {\cal S}(X)^I \), which are invariant under the Iwahori subgroup I of G, coincides with the space generated by the elements of the so called periodic Lusztig basis, introduced recently by G. Lusztig (cf. [10] and [11]). We also give an interpretation of this space in terms of a certain equivariant K-group (this was also done by G. Lusztig — cf. [12]). Finally we present a global analogue of \( {\cal S}(X) \), which allows us to give a somewhat non-traditional treatment of the theory of the principal Eisenstein series.
