In a rapidly growing information-oriented society, people with disabilities and older people are faced with serious inconveniences in accessing IT products due to complicated use of technologies and poorly designed interfaces. To solve the problems, it is required for designers and engineers to find out and understand user needs, and then to figure out the functionalities and design characteristics to meet the needs. Figuring out the Engineering Characteristics (EC) of products from user needs for people with disabilities and older people who have problems using main stream products due to limited accessibility would take great efforts and time. We merged two important concepts of product design for people with disabilities and older people, accessibility and universal design, using an engineering design framework of QFD (Quality Function Deployment) to provide engineers and designers with a systematic methodology for universal product design. We adapted a technical report from the ISO/IEC JTC1 Special Working Group on Accessibility (SWG-A), the Information Technology – Accessibility Considerations for People with Disabilities – Part 1: User Needs Summary (ISO/IEC PDTR 99999-1), and mapped the detailed user accessibility needs to the guidelines of 7 universal design principles which are widely accepted. We explained how a process model was built for mapping relationship between the guidelines and user accessibility needs, and extracting the critical engineering characteristics for IT product design based on these two models. Expansion of world economy brings changes in the way of thinking which can be seen in customers' demands. This directly influences the increase in demands at designing of a new or modifications of the existing products. Quality Function Deployment is a method directed towards revealing customers' wishes, which guarantees that these wishes have a positive effect on the product design and on the development of manufacturing process. Using and interpreting certain surveys of different types in the right way, additional advantages can be achieved in increasing of competitiveness in free markets. The most significant advantage is the possibility of using those specialists' expressions most often used by potential customers. Another problem of market experts and designers is translation from the "language" of customers to the "language" of quality characteristics. This problem is solved by using quality matrixes called the "house of quality" by Japanese. The "house of quality" is very appropriate and clear form of concise presenting of numerous data which refer to quality analysis, planning and decision making. Basically speaking the method of quality function deployment serves to improve customers' satisfaction with the product quality. What can this method contribute in comparison with already achieved results by using traditional methods in quality improvement? In this way the enterprise gets connected with its customers, and within the enterprise itself communication among different departments is improved so the new product has real chances to satisfy demands and needs of the customers. Taking into account that method of quality function deployment uses customers' demands as input data it means that the enterprise understands customers better and their understanding of product quality. Thus, even in the phase of planning, awareness of what should be done is raised in order to increase the degree of customers' satisfaction. Four-stage quality function deployment process in the automotive industry implemented and presented in the paper. A car represents a very complex product. A great number of parts, diversity of applicable materials, numerous and complex technology processes in manufacturing, on the one side, as well as a lot of demands from developed and less developed markets, on the other hand, make car manufacturing very complex in production, economic, and technological sense. Quality Function Deployment method can be used at designing of a new car, but also at solving of some of the existing problems. When carrying out reliability testing we came to the opening of the engine lid during driving the tested car. Taking into account that it was nonconformity which endangers traffic safety, the analysis of the stated problem was carried outimmediately.

To improve the user perception of design decisions for living spaces in rural tourism-based elderly housing scientifically, a design approach is proposed from the perspective of user needs. This approach establishes an innovative model for the design of living spaces in rural tourism-based elderly housing by integrating the Kano model, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Firstly, the KJ method is used to extract the raw user needs, and after data cleaning, the Kano model is applied to categorize the attributes of these initial needs. Subsequently, the AHP method is used to construct a hierarchical model of user needs, enabling the calculation of the weight values of needs across different levels. User needs with higher weight values are integrated to create the design, and three design schemes are proposed for comparative analysis. Finally, the TOPSIS method is used to comprehensively evaluate the three design schemes derived from the user needs items identified by the Kano model and AHP method, thereby validating the feasibility of each design scheme. Experimental results show that the user needs-driven living space, constructed using the Kano model, AHP method, and TOPSIS method, transforms subjective concepts into specific design parameters through both qualitative and quantitative methods. This approach not only effectively addresses user needs but also provides solid theoretical support for the design of living spaces in rural tourism-based elderly housing.

In this paper, an approach combining the Kano model and quality function deployment (QFD) is proposed to meet customer requirements in product design. The Kano model provides an effective way to categorizing customer requirements and helps understand the nature of these requirements. The Kano model categories the customer satisfaction into three fields, namely, must be, attractive and exciting. QFD is a customer-focused product design method. It can transfer customer requirements to products' engineering characteristics. By combining the two methods, we can provide a new way to optimize the product design. The proposed methods can be useful to both practitioners and researchers.

This paper shows a new method for integration of Kano's model in quality function deployment (QFD) through a case study of evaluating the 9th China-Asean Exposition. The QFD could help collect customer's needs and translate them into the relative arrangement and management of exposition. But in order to understand the customers' needs accurately, the paper introduces Kano's model so as to distinguish the excitement needs, the basic needs and the performance needs. This methodology has been used in product design and production plan. This study uses it to evaluate that the exposition satisfies its exhibitors' requirements to what extent, which starts a new application field for QFD and Kano's model. Finally, this paper gives some implication advice for the China-Asean Exposition so as to help improve its quality.

Purpose Small-medium enterprise (SME) service industry is an industry that continues to experience growth in developed and developing countries, including Indonesia. SME service industry that engaged in the service industry, namely, rental for generator set, air conditioner and sound system. In recent years, this SME has been experienced in declining in sales and getting some complaints from their customers. Many studies suggest that service quality and customer satisfaction are the key factors in the service industry. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the quality of service based on the customer’s perspective. Design/methodology/approach Data was collected using a combination of literature review, interview, brainstorming and questionnaires and analyzed by using importance-performance analysis (IPA) and quality function deployment (QFD) model. Findings This research resulted in nine technical requirements that allow the company to focus on these attributes to help the company enhance its customer satisfaction. Practical implications Based on the theory, applying service quality, IPA and also QFD will result in customer satisfaction. Practically the enhancement in customer satisfaction is not as easy as expected. Nowadays, customers always expect more and more and it is impossible to fully captured customers’ needs and always satisfy customers. Nevertheless, for this research company can understand their customers better, companies can evaluate their performances based on the customers’ perspective and know their customers’ needs. The company also know their strengths and weaknesses to allocate the resources and maximize their potential. Last but not least, the company is able to know their strategic priority that needs to be done for their better performance in the future to fulfill their customers’ needs and hope to enhance their customer satisfaction Originality/value A lot of research about customer satisfaction but still limited especially in the service industry in Indonesia using a combination of IPA and QFD model. So this research will give benefit for SMEs in Indonesia to allocate their resources more effectively by looking at the results of the four quadrants of IPA and house of quality (HOQ) framework can be used for a company as the references for their priority strategic option. Yet, to keep improving, the company recommended reviewing HOQ periodically.

This research builds upon the author's earlier work on the design of a cassava pulling tool. The aim is to develop a non-mechanical or minimally-powered tool that addresses farmer needs. The tool design incorporates Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to ensure user satisfaction. QFD is a method that integrates customer desires into technical requirements during the design phase, prior to production. Data analysis revealed key user desires: lightweight materials, affordability, the ability to pull multiple cassava stems simultaneously, durability, safety, and additional functionalities. House of Quality (HOQ) analysis identified the most crucial attribute (weight of importance: 30%) as the ability to pull multiple stems at once. This finding served as the primary basis for prototype development and technical characteristic definition. Subsequent prototype testing successfully uprooted cassava plants, demonstrating the tool's capability of pulling multiple stems in a single operation.

The purpose of this study is to analyse and measure the current service quality of Bahir Dar city hotels and design a house of quality to improve the service quality and competitiveness. SERVQUAL and quality function deployment (QFD) models are employed as a service quality measurement, design and customer satisfaction improvement tools. After prioritising customer needs, competitive assessments of hotel services were done from the customers' perspective using house of quality (HoQ). As a result of the differences between expectations and perceptions, service quality gaps are revealed in all hotel service quality dimensions. Generally, the results revealed that the overall hotels' services quality levels are bellow customers' expectations. According to the findings, technical requirements important to enhance service quality and meet customer satisfaction are identified and prioritised. Finally, a house of quality is designed to improve the service quality and competitiveness of hotels.

The objective of this paper is to develop the tool of halal food control by applying Quality Function Deployment (QFD). The modification of House of Quality (HOQ) matrix in QFD model are necessary to be conducted in order to fit the proposed QFD model with halal food control in the company. The proposed QFD model is composed of three HOQ matrices. The matrix 1 describes the relationship between attributes of halal assurance system and product process. The matrix 2 represent the relationship between attributes of halal assurance system and the halal critical. Finally, matrix 3 explains the relationship between product process and halal critical. The case study in chicken meat processing company is used to test the applicability and how to work the proposed QFD model for halal food control.

Quality function deployment (QFD) has been a popular product or service development method to convert customer needs (CNs) into technical requirements (TRs). Nevertheless, the traditional QFD has vagueness inherent in experts' opinions in determining CNs' weights and the relationship between CNs and TRs. In the previous research works, fuzzy set theory is popular to deal with imprecise information in QFD. However, it still suffers from several deficiencies. For example, it needs prior information that leads to relatively fixed intervals expressing vagueness; and it assumes the membership degrees are crisp. To solve the issues, this article develops an integrated QFD method, where rough sets and cloud model are utilized for treating uncertain information. The former expresses impreciseness without any other assumptions and the latter considers expert evaluations' randomness. In order to obtain more comprehensive importance of CNs, a combination weighting method is utilized. In the end, a compressor rotor's industrial service design is conducted utilizing the proposed method, where its effectiveness is verified.

Rail Transportation is the best option of transport in many countries of the world. One of the factors that increase the share of rail passenger transportation is developing rail transportation of passenger by increasing level of customer satisfaction in this type of service. The main purpose of this paper is service design by identification and prioritization of customer demands in Kano model. The statistical population consisted of travelers who used the Iran South-East Railway services. To determine the sample size, as there was not any certain statistical test as research requirement, we used the saturated sample, so that we selected samples as long as the opinions became converged. Semi-structured interviews, interviews with experts and a questionnaire for a two-week period in January 2014 were used to collect data. The final questionnaire was compiled and its validity was confirmed after obtaining the expert’s points of view and fixing deficiencies and problems. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to assess the reliability of questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the obtained information from the questionnaires. Kano model, QFD method in the SPSS and Excel were used for the inferential statistics. Data analysis in the Kano model and QFD method was done in Excel software; and Spss16 software was used to measure the reliability. After identifying the characteristics of service with the help of experts, quality Function Development (QFD) was used to prioritize them and finally, required services has been ranked and proper selection of personnel, upgrade facilities of rail and the exact timing of train schedules are 3 first priority, if first six priorities are done, almost half of the costumers will be satisfied.

This paper seeks to identify effective procedures for increasing student satisfaction and modernising the reputation of a master’s programme by improving the quality of service. Hence, the main objective of this study is to identify innovative factors that could transform student views into systematic operational procedures. The QFD house of quality (HOQ) methodology, which was adopted and integrated with Kano’s model, was used to identify student needs, determine the types of programme qualities that students found attractive, and translate these elements into the services provided by the programme. The study identifies concepts relevant to the continuous improvement of a master’s programme.

In today's fast-paced era, the requirements for a product's form and performance are no longer the sole criteria for measuring its quality. They are also directly linked to whether it can provide users with a positive feedback experience. Integrating the concept of emotional design into interaction innovation, always prioritizing the user experience, has become a new direction in modern ceramic tableware product design. This paper summarizes the current state and design of ceramic tableware, employs the KJ Method to investigate user needs, and conducts need analysis based on the three-level theory of emotional design. Utilizing the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) theory, it maps user need elements to the quality deployment elements of tableware, calculates their weights, and prioritizes quality issues to be addressed based on these weights. Through this method, the paper derives insights and reflections for the innovative design of ceramic tableware, combining QFD principles with emotional design to chart a direction for future design development.

The purpose of this research was to improve the process and production process of flat rubber sheets by using the Quality Function Deployment technique (QFD) since the traditional rubber sheet production process is human-intensive causing fatigue and delays. The customer needs were identified by groups of rubber farmers in Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, and Bueng Kan Provinces in Thailand. The house of quality (HoQ) of QFD was then applied to translate the customer needs into design targets. The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) was applied to minimize conflicts between technical requirements. An experiment was designed to determine the optimum speed and distance between the rolls. The results showed that the optimal motor speed was 400 rpm and the optimal distance between the rollers in rubber sheet extrusion was 3.0 millimeters. The average measurements in terms of width, length, and thickness were 448, 849, and 3.82 millimeters, respectively, which conformed to raw rubber sheets standard 2 with the thickness of the rubber sheet not exceeding 4 millimeters and the weight not exceeding 1,200 grams. The production process was reduced from 19 to 14 steps. The product movement distance was reduced from 16.90 meters to 10.25 meters. The production process was reduced from 263 minutes to 187 minutes for 60 sheets. The developed rubber sheet machine has reduced the production time by 76 minutes for 60 sheets, with a high customer satisfaction level (Mean 4.63, S.D. = 0.49).

The asymmetry of knowledge with regard to user requirements for a shared research equipment service makes it difficult to develop user-oriented strategies and policies. To resolve this issue, we developed a framework using the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) process and Kano's model for application to a case study on innovation in the shared research equipment service at the Gyeonggi Bio-Center. Kano's model allows us to define which service quality requirements are attractive, one-dimensional or must-be qualities in the shared research equipment service. The QFD process has rarely been applied to the shared research equipment service (which is closely related with technology infrastructure policy). The newly developed framework consists of three actors: ‘user’, ‘service institution’ and ‘provincial government’. The QFD process in the framework is performed by a two-step deployment of service deployment and policy deployment that bridges the knowledge gap among the three actors in the regional innovation system. Alternatives and implications for shared research equipment service with a focus on user-friendliness have been systematically produced through application of the suggested framework.
