Industrial rehabilitation.

Yes, industrial rehabilitation has come of age. The "trendiness" and "glitz" associated with such programs are now gone (or, at least, on the wane). These programs are now being subjected to the same scrutiny as other business ventures, no longer seen as the "cash cows" that single-handedly can end the financial woes of an organization. Along with this maturity has come an accreditation system with accepted standards of practice, care and methodological style; a data base reporting on the range and limits of program capability; and the realization by the insurance community that industrial rehabilitation can be effective and that these programs are reasonable assessment and intervention alternatives for selected patients. We have also noted that as these programs grow past their adolescence it will be important to pay close attention to basic questions of cost, value, and worth. While most programs have not been totally "institutionalized" into the health care provision system, their honeymoon phase has reached a positive conclusion. It's now time to look very closely at where we are today, remember where we have come from, and look to the future with a realistic and clear view.

The paper develops an ecological approach to explore conditions for industrial renewal in the UK textiles and apparel sector and the possibilities for policy. The authors argue that the material legacy of deindustrialisation conditions the opportunities for survivor firms and creates specific, sub-sectoral industrial ecologies. Literature from economics, business studies, development and ecological studies is used to outline a framework that allows different possible relations between firm capability and local habitat. Two subsectors, carpets and apparel, are used to explore the notion of interaction between firm capability and ecology: though the context of deindustrialisation is similar in some respects, the specific conditions provide quite distinctive opportunities for renewal. In carpets, relatively larger firms have more successfully co-evolved with retailers through various kinds of mutuality; in apparel, a workshop sector of mainly small and micro firms frequently struggles with predatory behaviour by much larger retailers. The implication of this analysis is that industrial policy needs to be grounded in analysis of the capabilities-habitat interplay, focusing on areas where conditions are favourable or can be improved through supporting firm capabilities and modifying supply chain behaviours. The concepts and analysis are relevant for considering other industries and contexts where industrial renewal depends on producer firms and the ecology in which they operate.

It is difficult to imagine any manager or executive in industry today not knowing about the existence at least of Total Quality Management. Since the late 1970s TQM has become one of the most discussed topics in the boardrooms of Western companies and interest in this subject can be attributed to a single cause: the rapid development and growth of worldclass industries in Japan and the success of Japanese consumer products in Western markets during the past 20 years. Anyone buying Japanese designed and built motor cars, cameras, radios and televisions, etc. will attest to the quality and reliability of these products. So good are they that Japanese manufacturing industry has come to represent a considerable threat to many Western industries and may, in some cases, have caused their total collapse. This is illustrated by the demise of long established business like the British motor-cycle industry, although it is open to debate how much the collapse of an industry under pressure from competition is a direct result of that competition or how much is a direct result of an inability to accept and manage change and to make sound investment in the renewal of industry. Japanese industry has certainly shown its ability to cope with change and, indeed, change as the catalyst for improvement is encouraged. As Jackson (1993) says, the ability of Japanese companies to respond quickly to outside shocks is better than in any other country, with Japanese business leaders appearing to be more pragmatic and flexible than their competitors.

Returning to work: The principles and practice of work hardening in industrial rehabilitation

Industrial Rehabilitation

Returning the injured worker to his previous occupation can be a difficult and complex rehabilitation process. The goal of standard stabilization exercises (SSE) is to facilitate the active system for improved dynamic spinal stability. Improving dynamic spinal stability can decrease the forces placed on the intervertebral joints, which minimizes the chance of reinjury. When used in conjunction with industrial rehabilitation, SSEs offer the optimal environment for an injured worker to practice his occupational demands while using appropriate spinal stabilization.

This chapter examines Chicago's industrial decline and the response of the city's place-dependent bourgeoisie to its fading fortunes. It charts the history of industrial change between 1920 and 1975 and looks at the creation of industrial redevelopment programs in the city of Chicago in the postwar years as city leaders responded to these industrial changes. It also argues that the city of Chicago experienced industrial decline from the 1920s and city leaders implemented several industrial renewal initiatives in the postwar period in an attempt to reverse industrial decline. The chapter explains how the industrial renewal failed, emphasizing on the place-dependent coalitions of developers, financiers, politicians, small business owners, and industrial managers that worked to counter deindustrialization were fighting a losing battle. It mentions alliances that consisted of people from real estate, health, education, finance, and government that pushed a new vision for Chicago.

Industrial Renewal:

This chapter attempts to use the perspective developed on the French political economy to make sense of other advanced capitalist nations (especially Germany), in practically all respects a type of capitalism that is very different from the French one which made up the core of the book. It then goes on to draw out conclusions of a more theoretical nature on the relationship between actors and institutions in processes of industrial readjustment.
