Games are useful tools for introducing new concepts to students. This paper describes a competitive two-player game for sophomore students in a modern physics survey course or junior/senior students in an introductory quantum mechanics course to build intuition and quantitative understanding of the probabilistic nature of quantum measurements in two-level systems such as qubits or the Stern–Gerlach experiment. The goal of the game is to guess a quantum state secretly chosen from a given set in the fewest number of measurements. It uses 20-sided dice or other classical random number generators to simulate quantum measurements. The Bloch vector formalism is introduced to give a geometric description of the quantum states and measurement outcomes. Several ready-to-use sets of quantum states are given, so readers can jump right in and try the game themselves without any prior knowledge of quantum mechanics. More advanced students can also use the game in suggested follow-up exercises to deepen students' understanding of quantum measurements and their statistical description.

This article discusses a set of Maple programs developed to reinforce understanding of basic concepts presented in an introductory quantum mechanics course. It was designed so that the solutions of the problems were analytically tractable as well as numerically obtainable. We note that there exist various approaches to a simple quantum mechanical problem. For example, for the problem of bound-states with a one-dimensional potential, the transfer matrix method, the Laplace transform method, and the Feynman path integral method can equally be applied. We believe that this type of program is extremely useful for igniting the student’s interest and widening his or her viewpoint. Several examples, such as the solution of various one-dimensional potential problems and the solution of the one-dimensional Schroedinger wave equation, are discussed in order to indicate how constructive reinforcement is established.

In quantum mechanics courses, symmetries of a physical system are usually introduced as operators which commute with the Hamiltonian. In this paper we will consider chiral symmetries which anticommute with the Hamiltonian. Typically, introductory courses at the (under)graduate level do not discuss these simple, useful and beautiful symmetries at all. The first time a student encounters them is when the Dirac equation is discussed in a course on relativistic quantum mechanics, or when particle–hole symmetry is studied in the context of superconductivity. In this paper, we will show how chiral symmetries can be simply elucidated using the theory of angular momentum, which is taught in virtually all introductory quantum mechanics courses.

Quantum mechanics is a highly mathematical topic that many students struggle with. We studied the effect of initial mathematics knowledge and self-efficacy on student learning on an introductory (first to second-year) quantum mechanics course by administering a mathematics pre-test and a self-efficacy questionnaire (N = 50). We correlated the results with course performance (exercise and exam scores). The self-efficacy beliefs of different student groups differed, but correlations between self-efficacy, initial mathematics skills and performance on this course remained modest. In addition, the correlations between self-efficacy beliefs in different aspects of learning quantum mechanics were low to moderate, meaning that students’ self-efficacy beliefs in this topic are highly situational. We observed that first-year students with high self-efficacy were more likely to report theoretical physics as their study track. Their initial mathematics skills did not differ from their peers, but they scored slightly better in exercises and the exam than first-year physics students, as the (experimental) physics group also included lower performing individuals. Second-year students who reported physics as their study track scored lower than both first-year physics and theoretical physics students in all measures. The explanation is likely a selective effect: the physics students who take the course in their first year are more comfortable with more advanced physics and mathematics content.
