Reconceptualizing the Product Life Cycle Concept - Lessons from Diffusion of Innovations

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a key technique to achieve green design. But it isn't applied widely because of its defects. In order to enhance the operability of LCA in green design, a LCA tool, named green product life cycle design (GPLCD) is described in this paper. The paper is divided into four sections: first, based on the analysis of the existing LCA method and the product design activities, the functional model of the LCA tool is built with IDEF0 methods. And then through analyzing the product and its life cycle activities, product's life cycle model is proposed and the functional unit class and process class are presented with object oriented design. Third, aimed to the problems of the data management of product's life cycle, product configuration management is integrated into GPLCD. Finally, a case on choosing material of impeller is given to testify how to use the LCA tool to support green design.

Managing Product and Production Variety – A Language Workbench Approach

Problems. Under the present-day conditions, the preservation of competences of Ukrainian aircraft construction enterprises will be determined by the possibility of enterprises attracting to participation in international cooperation programs and projects. But this is possible only on the condition of prior harmonization of the product development methodology adopted in Ukrainian aircraft construction to that used in the international aircraft construction projects. Purose. The main goal of this article is to determine the ability and ways of adapting the corporate model of life cycle of aircraft engineering projects by Ukrainian aircraft construction enterprises to modern global aircraft construction practices. Implementation methodology. The research methodology predicted the identification of the main modern trends in the field of system engineering for the creation of a science-intensive product, as well as the analysis of concepts of presenting the life cycle of complex technical systems in international regulatory documents, industry regulations, guidelines and other information sources. Criteria for perspective of using the identified informational and normative sources as close analogues for the development of one's own corporate model of life cycle of an aircraft construction product were identified. On the basis of the criterion analysis of researched concepts of the life cycle of complex technical systems representing, the requirements were formed, which formed the basis of the concept of one's own corporate model of life cycle of the aircraft construction product. The results. The result of conducted research was the proposed concept of a corporate model of the life cycle of an aircraft construction product manufactured in Ukraine, which takes into account the international experience and best practices of leading aircraft construction companies, including focusing on the experience accumulated by domestic aircraft manufacturers. Conclusions. According to the results of analysis of advanced world practices in the field of creating a science-intensive product, an own corporate model of the life cycle of an aircraft product manufactured in Ukraine was proposed. In the future, on the basis of this model, a system for creating an aircraft product can be built and developed, which will be harmonized with existing world practices and will allow the domestic aircraft construction enterprises to fight for participation in international programs and projects.

A Web-enabled virtual repository for supporting distributed automotive component development

Despite the active development of the product lifecycle concept in the real sector of economy, Russian companies in the engineering industry are just beginning experiments with this business model and product lifecycle contracts (or performance-based lifecycle product support). Probably, one of the reasons is that enterprises cannot objectively assess the economic efficiency of this business model: sometimes the sources of economic efficiency and possible economic risks are not obvious to them. Moreover, enterprises do not have a basic economic model that would help to assess the potential financial result of a project fulfilled in a lifecycle business model. In this regard, it is important to analyze and explain the reasons for the economic efficiency of lifecycle contracts with using of global practical experience, as well as international research of this topic. As a result, it is necessary to formulate a principled approach to assessing the effectiveness of such projects in comparison with projects implemented within the classic product business model. In the article, the authors analyze the sources of economic efficiency of projects fulfilled in the product lifecycle model in mechanical engineering industry. The authors point out the potential risks, which can affect the economic result of the project. The article also presents a principled formula for assessing the cost of a lifecycle contract and an example of calculating the economic efficiency of such a contract in aircraft engine project.

<p>This thesis explores the merits of applying a marketing model, the product life-cycle model, to a political party. The product life-cycle model details a product during its introduction, growth, maturity and decline cycles. For this thesis I apply this model to the British Labour Party between 1994 and 2010 under the leadership of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. The product life-cycle model, adapted to political science from the political marketing literature, shows that a political party does go through an introduction, growth, maturity and decline phase. To avoid moving into the decline phase, a political party must learn how to rejuvenate during the maturity cycle. This thesis concludes that the product life-cycle model does have merits when applied to political parties. In the case of the British Labour Party, it began with a strong market-orientation, but the longer it stayed in power this market-orientation shifted. The New Labour brand and its primary brand agent, Tony Blair, were both strong assets to the party. However, during the lifetime of the product these assets became liabilities. The longer that New Labour stayed in power, the more it shifted away from its relationship with the political market. The product life-cycle model should be tested in other political systems to further strengthen its explanatory power.</p>

Based on analyzing the connotation of product structure, the concept of the product lifecycle model having three dimensions including time, data and granularity is put forward. It expresses the fall information of product lifecycle actions. The formalization definitions of the nodes, the nodes attributes, their relationship and the structural subtree are given. The operation methods of the nodes and nodes attributes are given. The operation rules and the transformation steps between model subtrees are described. The product lifecycle modelling process is illustrated from the product requirement structural subtree to the product scrap structural subtree by a demonstration.

Product life cycle (LC) models are mainly based on the traditional product understanding where the phases from ideation to recycling are sequential steps [1]. Today, products have to be understood as a combination of physical products and related services, so called “extended products” (EP) [2]. A famous example of an extended product is Apples iPhone, a cellular phone as physical core extended by iTunes as access point to software offerings to customize the core with services [3]. LC models addressing the characteristics of the EP concept are rarely discussed in literature [4]. Within this paper, the relationship between product and service LC is discussed to get a better understanding of the extended product LC. It will be shown that there can be both the product as well as the service the incubator for an EP in any phase of their life cycle.

This paper proposes a framework for building product information model (PIM) and product rule model (PRM), and integrated reasoning based on Description Frame Logic (DFL) [1] for collaborative product engineering environments. Most of the previous research has focused either on building ontology for PIM or on building a rule base for PRM respectively, not on both of them. Some research on product engineering has tried to build both ontology language and rule-language. But, the research is/has been limited to using both languages in a homogeneous approach under open world assumption (OWA) such as Web Ontology Language (OWL)/Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL), which has some drawbacks to accommodate the requirements of enhanced expressivity for collaborative product engineering. We adopt Description Frame Logic (DFL) framework to integrate product semantics in PIM and engineering-specific knowledge in PRM based on description logic (DL) and logic programming (LP) under both open world assumption (OWA) and closed world assumption (CWA). This enables to secure seamless and interactive reasoning between PIM and PRM. We also include rule-expressions and constraint checking with DL for PIM while we include DL-expression in rules and LP’s non-logical features for PRM. This provides enhancement of expressiveness required for product engineering. Additionally, we show the benefits of the proposed framework with a case study.

This paper analyzes the characteristics of resource-based enterprises in Inner Mongolia, points out that it still need to go through a phase of resource consumption for Inner Mongolia. This paper studies and brings about an environmental cost management model of resource-enterprises in Inner Mongolia. The author points out that such kind of enterprises should procure cost information with activity-based costing(ABC) oriented by material and energy flow under cost management model of product life cycle then the information can bring support for the enterprises to undertake social responsibility, to make correct decision and for the government to make environmental policies.

Firms can improve their performance by tailoring investments to ride industry trends rather than to fight them. This article sheds light on how. It argues that better corporate performance hinges on understanding how industries evolve and that the main frameworks currently in use (the five forces and the S‐curve/product life cycle models) are incomplete for this purpose. Building on an extensive body of fieldwork and statistical research, the author identifies four basic models of industry evolution which she calls ‘receptive’, ‘blockbuster’, ‘radical organic’, and ‘intermediating’. Each kind of evolution involves specific kinds of risks, and each carries different implications for the relevance of established capabilities and investment priorities.

A product information modeling framework for product lifecycle management

Stage concerns have been important in product life cycles (PLC). Such concerns are stage identification, stage-related strategies and, here newly introduced, ‘stage modeling’. Stage modeling is concerned with not only modeling but also aggregation of individual stages in an overall-influencing manner. It not only preserves the respective characteristics of the stages but also may be explored for the stage-related strategy issue later. To date, this aspect of PLC modeling has not yet been explored. In this paper, a fuzzy PLC modeling capable of preserving the fuzzy individual characteristics of the stages is proposed. The various concepts such as boundary identification, fuzzy stages modeling, and stages’ inter-influence functions are introduced and discussed. Finally, to illustrate and support the approach, a numerical example and a comparison with classical data-analytic procedures (segmented polynomial regression and autoregressive-integrated moving average) is provided.
