Factors Affecting SMEs Emerging Technologies Adoption in Developing Countries: A Literature Review

This paper deals with the factors affecting an adoption of information technology (IT) in micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within the transition economies of the Czech–Polish region. The basic determinants of IT adoption which were identified include data sources, the use of function modules in information systems, the required IT properties and the way IT operations are implemented. The results of the questionnaire survey carried out in 2012 are evaluated by the asymmetric dependence testing and estimation of ordinal regression models. The paper describes the impact of selected determinants on IT adoption. The analysis results show a different effect of determinants in relation to the size of an economic entity (individual SME segments). When we are aware of the importance of these indicators, it can help us to improve the understanding, monitoring and support of the further development of IT adoption in SMEs as an important condition for the successful economy transformation.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has emerged as a crucial determinant in business transformation, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This research aims to delve deeply into how the implementation of ICT in MSMEs contributes to enhancing their competitiveness. The research method employed is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach, where data were collected through interviews with MSME owners who have implemented information technology in their operations.The results indicate that the integration of ICT has provided significant positive impacts on MSMEs. One of the key benefits is the enhancement of operational efficiency, where the use of information systems has expedited business processes and reduced operational costs. Additionally, MSMEs that adopt information technology also have broader market access through online platforms and social media, thereby enhancing sales potential and business growth. However, the implementation of ICT in MSMEs also faces several challenges, such as high implementation costs, limited access to infrastructure, and concerns about data security. Therefore, strong support from the government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector is needed to provide training, technical assistance, and necessary infrastructure for MSMEs to harness the full potential of ICT.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are 99.9% of total businesses in Indonesia. Mapping/clustering potential of SMEs that built in accordance with the conditions of the region/administrative, potential resources (commodities) and business units (production centers and groups) can be used as an indicator and the benchmark for guidance, development and supervision in order to strengthen the spine and the national economic structure. Objectives of the study are (1) identify potential SMEs that built in accordance with business information and problems encountered; (2) compile a database of selected target SMEs in the form of statistical profiles that are relevant to the purposes of guidance, development and supervision (success indicators and critical); (3) develop a standard model or alternative development, SMEs development and built a successful surveillance with the potential clustering patterns (base development) in accordance with local circumstances, and economic sectors. In this study used techniques: (1) desk research of secondary data sourced from SMEs that built by PT. Sucofindo and literature on SMEs-related studies conducted; (2) a brief survey to the selected SMEs locations from the point (1) purposively to obtain primary data as a verification activity that is supported by effective semi-structured questionnaire. Data analysis carried out descriptively, both qualitative and quantitative. From the study guidance, development and supervision of SMEs that built by PT Sucofindo available facts and data (information business, determinants, the feasibility of the business sector, loan repayment status and conceptual models) that SMEs that built can be categorized pre-enterprise SMEs and businesses running. Business grouping determines the smoothness of debt servicing. Therefore, in order to establish indicators of the model guidance, development and supervision in accordance with the type of SME, then the PT. Sucofindo requires an assessment system that is easy, fast, accurate, reliable and trustworthy, that can later be used as an effective guide for guidance, development and supervision of SMEs in general and in particular SMEs that built by PT. Sucofindo used a generic approach in business performance indicators that are supported by indicators of business drivers. Model guidance, development and supervision SMEs that has done so far by PT. Sucofindo still be reliable, but for the speed and feasibility of the establishment of SMEs which will be built into the front according to selected economic sectors, would be equipped with an approach that resulted in the studies of guidance, development and supervision, namely the general model of guidance, development and supervision of SMEs that built based on SMEs that built issues, systems of SMEs that built, assumptions, conceptual models and variables that can be measured. Guidance, development and supervision of SMEs that built, with potential cluster approach can be performed on: (1) category of solid natural resources, when positioned on the outskirts of the city and labor intensive, when positioned in the center of town; (2) technical assistance and competency-based according to the phase business. Both of the thing are helping improve the performance and structural improvement of SMEs, increase their competitiveness and resilience of SMEs supported by the core business, supporting business and related businesses intensively interconnected

Guidelines for the Successful Adoption of Information Technology in Small and Medium Enterprises

This study uses Inglehart’s measures of sociological culture, to examine the relationship between culture and the leverage of small and medium enterprises. Using system generalized methods of moments methodology on an unbalanced panel data of 96,349 firms over 10 years, we find that emancipative (secular) values are negatively (positively) associated with leverage through the mechanisms of trust and family borrowings, respectively. We also show that financial literacy moderates the relationship between culture and leverage. Furthermore, country bankruptcy procedures and information environment determine the extent of the interaction effect of financial literacy and culture on the debt usage by small and medium enterprises. Our study offers policy implications to financial institutions and decision-makers for the promotion of small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurship training and development. as culture, financial literacy, and institutions play a significant role in small and medium enterprises’ financing decisions. • Sociological culture is related to debt usage by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). • Emancipative (survival) values are negatively (positively) related to leverage possibly due to the higher level of trust in emancipative societies. • Secular (traditional) values are positively(negatively) related to SME debt usage most likely explained by the tendency of traditional societies to rely on personal borrowings from family and friends instead of debt. • The level of financial literacy in a society affects the degree of the culture impact on SME leverage. • Institutional characteristics such as, country bankruptcy procedures and information environment, determine the extent of the interplay of financial literacy and culture on the level of SME debt. • This study provides many policy implications. • Specifically, our results guide policies for institutional initiatives tailored to cultural contexts and offer implications for entrepreneurial training and development in SMEs.

Lilibooi Village is in West Leihitu District, Central Maluku Province. Lilibooi Village has great natural potential so that apart from attracting tourists to visit because of its natural beauty, it is also because of its large natural resources in the agricultural sector. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in this village are already running but are still on a small scale and need to be improved. There are many challenges faced by SMEs today, including SMEs in Central Maluku, especially in Lilibooi, which are still faced with a lack of understanding about the importance of information technology, online promotions, business locations and product quality. Marketing strategies are needed to increase the sales volume of each SME player and introduce SME products more widely. The aim of this community service activity is to answer the problems faced by SMEs in Lilibooi Village by providing outreach and sharing knowledge so that SME actors in the village can apply it to improve SME performance. The socialization material provided is related to several issues that are not yet understood so that it can encourage SME marketing. The result of this service is the absorption of knowledge and skills from SME players in understanding the role of marketing strategy through material in the form of applying technology to SME operations, promotions, business locations and product quality. The development of SMEs can have an influence on improving their performance. Grandes empresas do setor de turismo fazem o uso intensivo de Tecnologia da Informação (TI), também denominada Tecnologia da Informação e Comunicação (TIC), na promoção de seus produtos ou serviços e essa tendência também tem sido incorporada pelas micro e pequenas empresas (MPE) do setor hoteleiro. Para melhor compreender tal fenômeno, este estudo tem o objetivo de analisar os fatores que afetam a adoção de TI pelas MPEs do setor hoteleiro do estado de Sergipe. Possui abordagem qualitativa e utiliza como estratégia de pesquisa a de estudo de casos múltiplos. Verificou-se que as empresas hoteleiras que participaram do estudo possuem computadores e todos são conectados à Internet. Verificou-se também que a indisponibilidade da TI tem impacto negativo nos negócios. Identificou-se diferentes perfis de gestores e observou-se que o conhecimento em informática dos funcionários é indispensável. As limitações deste estudo são inerentes à estratégia de estudos de caso.

Effective utilisation of information technology (IT) is essential to compete in the global environment. As the contribution of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in generating employment, manufacturing output and export is significant, in most of the countries, there is a need to make them more informative, competitive and agile. The use of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT), together with IT, provides a means for improving performance, gaining global recognition and bringing growth. This paper is based on the survey of 84 MSMEs of India carried out to investigate the state of IT adoption for various functions and areas, and the hurdles encountered in the way of growth and competitiveness.

In South Africa, small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) have been recognized as the critical driving force to alleviate some economic challenges that the country faces. The challenges, such as the alleviation of poverty and the unemployment rate, can be addressed by policies that encourage SMME developments and sustainability. The historical background of SMMEs in South Africa has left them operating in various locations, such as cities and townships. There is a growing concern of the lack of information and communications technology (ICT) adoption by SMMEs, in particular those operating in townships. The aim of this study was to develop an ICT adoption framework using the sustainability livelihood framework (SLF) to encourage ICT adoption and improve the livelihood of township SMMEs. This study used the sustainable livelihood framework (SLF) to explore the broader socio-economic contents of the township SMMEs on human, social, financial, and physical and natural resource-based assets that enable the poor to enhance their capabilities and reduce their vulnerabilities. This study deployed a qualitative exploratory research. A sample of 21 SMME owners/managers operating in Soweto was used, and data were collected using in-depth interviews and observations. The study revealed township SMMEs are complex and dynamic and need various interventions in order for them to be sustainable. The SLF for township SMMEs can be used as a guideline for SMME owners/managers and policy makers when formulating ICT adoption policy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has lasted almost two years. This has an impact on the sustainability of micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Various efforts have been made to maintain the sustainability of SMEs, one of which is by adopting information technology in their marketing. This study aims to determine the effect of digital marketing, and knowledge of information technology on the financial performance of micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs)This research is quantitative research. Data was obtained by using a questionnaire. The respondents in this study were SMEs actors in Kapanewon Tempel Sleman Yogyakarta. From the number of SMEs actors who are members of the SMEs Forkom as many as 110 respondents, data is obtained as many as 60 respondents. This study was analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the results of data processing, it is known that the use of digital marketing by SMEs actors and SMEs actors' knowledge of information technology affects financial performance.

PurposeThe paper aims to investigate the effect of compositions of managerial/demographic characteristics of the top management team (TMT) on the extent of information technology (IT) adoption in small businesses (SMEs), where such strategic decisions made by TMT have direct and significant influence on all aspects of business operations and its competitive position in a market.Design/methodology/approachBased on the upper echelon theory, the study formulated four hypotheses relating the compositions of TMT characteristics to the extent of IT adoption in different functional areas. Multiple regression analysis was employed to analyze the data.FindingsThe age average and the education average of TMT in small businesses are significant predictors of the extent of IT adoption. However, the group heterogeneity (either gender or ethnicity), contrary to the prediction, has negative impact on the extent of IT adoption.Practical implicationsThe research findings indicate that the age and education composition of managers as current/future top management is critical to facilitate the extent of IT adoption in SMEs.Originality/valueThe research contributes to the body of knowledge in IT adoption by complementing the results of prior research with the findings that the characteristic compositions of TMT affect the extent of IT adoption in SMEs, applying the upper echelon theory to examine issues surrounding IT adoption, and suggesting practical implications that SMEs could compose, educate, and rejuvenate their top management teams to achieve a high extent of IT adoption.

Purpose The Indonesian Government has taken many measures to support the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are expected to play a crucial role in employment creation, gross domestic product growth, and non-oil and gas export development. The purpose of this paper is to examine recent developments of SMEs in Indonesia. More specifically, it aims to address the following research questions: How important are SMEs in Indonesia? What are their main constraints? What is the impact of women entrepreneurs on SME development? and Can Indonesian SMEs be sources of innovation? Design/methodology/approach The paper analyzes data from Indonesia's National Agency of Statistics and reviews key literature and secondary data on Indonesian SMEs. Findings First, SMEs have been the main player in domestic economic activities as they account for more than 99.9 percent of all firms and employ 96.2 percent of the workforce. Second, key SME constraints include lack of finance and marketing difficulties. Third, representation of women entrepreneurs is still relatively low and can be attributed to low level of education and cultural/religious constraints. Finally, SME innovation capability is low for several key reasons. Originality/value The paper considers the involvement of women in SMEs in a Muslim-majority country and contributes to the literature on the innovation capability of SMEs.
