Recently, architectures and standards of digital networks for voice and data transmission have been established. These are referred to as Integrated Digital Networks (IDN). The need for different types of digital networks (for telephone, for bulk data, and for bursty data) has stimulated the development of the concept of an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) |1,2|. ISDN provides capabilities for a variety of services using a variety of communications modes. The information rate available to each ISDN subscriber will probably be 144 Kbit/s |3,4|, as resulting from the sum of three digital channels: B1 (64 Kbit/s) + B2 (64 Kbit/s) + D(16 Kbit/s). Channels B1 and B2 will convey the useful information, while channel D is reserved for signalling, and on a time-sharing basis, for packet-switched data transmission |4|.
