Interacting with Outdoor Sports Performance Data

As outdoor sports continue to gain popularity, understanding the environmental factors that may influence athletes is becoming a more important aspect of medical care for team physicians. Temperature, ultraviolet light, lightning, and altitude are some of the most common elements that cause illness. Understanding how to prevent, diagnose, and promptly treat conditions caused by environmental factors is essential to optimizing athletic performance in outdoor sports and avoiding morbidity.

Sports performance prediction has gradually become a research hotspot in various colleges and universities, and colleges and universities pay more and more attention to the development of college students' comprehensive quality. Aiming at the problems of low accuracy and slow convergence of the existing college students' sports performance prediction models, a method of college students' sports performance prediction based on improved BP neural network is proposed. First, preprocess the student's sports performance data, then use the BP neural network to train the data samples, optimize the selection of weights and thresholds in the neural network through the DE algorithm, and establish an optimal college student's sports performance prediction model, and then based on cloud computing, the platform implements and runs the sports performance prediction model, which speeds up the prediction of sports performance. The results show that the model can improve the accuracy of college students' sports performance prediction, provide more reliable prediction results, and provide valuable information for sports training.

This paper aims to study wearable noninvasive transducers for monitoring and improving sports performance. Inertial sensors are widely used to obtain physiological and performance data during sporting activity in order to optimize training and recovery but also to reduce human error in competition. In this context several solutions have been proposed in literature regarding neuromuscular stimulations, transcutaneous excitations, and functional signals, very often based on invasive approaches. The device here studied is a non-invasive solution composed of two portable systems (i.e. to be fixed in both the limbs), with an electromechanical actuator and a wireless circuit to synchronize the two systems. The analyses conducted arouse interest from a neurological point of view in the perspective to study the effect of various stimulations for muscle performance improvement in athletes. For these reasons, the paper deals with the aspects of the stimulation used for sport training evaluation including performance defects and functional purposes. The study regarded different parameters including frequency, pulse width, pulse duration, waveforms, intensity, amplitude and pulse pattern. The experimental method and the signals related to induced stimulations will be here presented. All the collected data have been crucial to submit a specific multidisciplinary study to the ethics committee that must approve the related clinical study.

Physical activity is crucial in human life, whether in everyday activities or elite sports. It is important to maintain or improve physical performance, which depends on various factors such as the amount of physical activity, the capability, and the capacity of the individual. In daily life, it is significant to be physically active to maintain good health, intense exercise is not necessary, as simple daily activities contribute enough. In sports, it is essential to balance capacity, workload, and recovery to prevent performance decline or injury.With the introduction of wearable technology, it has become easier to monitor and analyse physical activity and performance data in daily life and sports. However, extracting personalised insights and predictions from the vast and complex data available is still a challenge.The study identified four main problems in data analytics related to physical activity and performance: limited personalised prediction due to data constraints, vast data complexity, need for sensitive performance measures, overly simplified models, and missing influential variables. We proposed end investigated potential solutions for each issue. These solutions involve leveraging personalised data from wearables, combining sensitive performance measures with various machine learning algorithms, incorporating causal modelling, and addressing the absence of influential variables in the data.Personalised data, machine learning, sensitive performance measures, advanced statistics, and causal modelling can help bridge the data analytics gap in understanding physical activity and performance. The research findings pave the way for more informed interventions and provide a foundation for future studies to further reduce this gap.

Climate change is not only an environmental and socio-economic challenge but also a public health and institutional issue with direct ramifications for global sport. From the health of athletes to the degradation of infrastructure, sport is both a victim of climate instability and a contributor to climate change. This study organizes the impacts of climate change on sport into four interconnected domains: (1) athlete health and safety, (2) interruptions in competition and scheduling, (3) infrastructure vulnerability and water resource scarcity, and (4) the role of sport in adaptation and activism. To engage with these topics, this analysis incorporates literature and policy reviews, case studies, and R-based quantitative modelling. The climate and weather data were sourced from the ERA5 Reanalysis (ECMWF) and the Global Historical Climatology Network (NOAA) datasets and incorporated with sport performance and injury surveillance data, sourced from the Sports Reference archives, NCAA and CDC injury data, and climate impact surveys reported by athletes through World Athletics. In addition, projections from Climate Central and the Union of Concerned Scientists are included, highlighting the risks posed by extreme heat events to athletes, spectators, and infrastructure. By synthesising all of these interdisciplinary data sources, the manifestations of systemic susceptibility to climate instability within the global sports ecosystem can be demonstrated, alongside the critical imperative for integrated climate resilience planning across sport.

In both elite sport and military performance settings, the proliferation of data collection technologies has led to an era of unprecedented measurement, but not necessarily better decision-making. We challenge the current fixation on data volume and precision, arguing that without context, interpretation and narrative, performance metrics risk becoming noise rather than insight. Drawing on parallels between intelligence analysis and performance monitoring, a reframing of how data is used is proposed: from passive recording to active sense-making. By prioritising meaning over measurement and fostering interdisciplinary fluency between analysts, coaches and athletes, clarity and purpose can be restored to data-driven performance systems. This paper outlines a new framework for using performance data in high-stakes environments, centred around five key principles to encourage ‘leading with questions’, ‘measuring what matters’, ‘personalising the picture’, ensuring that ‘context is king’ and promoting a process of ‘shared interpretation’. This framework proposes that insight, not information, must become the currency of action.

PURPOSE: The physiological traits characterizing human capacities (the ability to move, reproduce or perform tasks) change with age: performance is limited at birth, increases to a maximum, then decrease back to zero at death. Both physical and intellectual skills follow similar ontogenies. The development of sport and chess performances during the lifetime was previously investigated at two different scales: the individual athletes’ careers and the world record by age class in 25 Olympic sports and in elite chess players. For all data sets, a biphasic pattern of growth and decline is described by a simple equation and the two processes (growth and decline) are exponential and operate throughout the lifetime, starting at age 0. Here we aim to demonstrate that this biphasic behaviour is probably widespread among biological phenomena and compare the characteristics of the biphasic patterns such as the age of peak performance. METHODS: Performances data were gathered for human (200, 400 and 800m races, n=5065, 5013 and 5080, respectively), greyhound (480m competitions, n=47991), mice (distance run on wheels during 24h, n=14241) and Caenorhabditis elegans (using an experimental eletrotaxis device). Other data-sets included performance in face recognition, lung functionality, muscle width in human-related systems plus physical performance in greyhounds and mice photosynthesis yield in cotton leaves, the aboveground net primary production in Picea abies with stand age. RESULTS: A U-inversed biphasic pattern is found in all the studied processes, in both the athletic (human Olympians and elite greyhound) and non-athletic (mice, Caenorhabditis elegans) species. The pattern is always asymmetrical and we found that the estimated ages of peak performance always occur in the early part of life: 20.6 % ±6.7% of estimated lifespan. CONCLUSIONS: The pattern is robust, whatever the type of effort and duration: free activity vs. constrained running or overall distance traveled vs. maximum speed. Our results suggest a similar age-related pattern in very different species. The description of the physiological limits shows that there is no brutal transition between the developmental and senescent periods. It thus questions the narrowed link between those two processes.

Introduction: Pittu, a traditional sport deeply rooted in southern Asian culture, has been played since ancient times and holds national significance across multiple nations. This study aimed to assess the performance of male and female pittu players using the 20-m sprint time test, a valuable tool for evaluating running duration and enhancing players’ proficiency in the sport. In addition, the study focused on exploring the correlation between sprint performance and anthropometric factors that influence the players’ performance. Methodology: This study was conducted with a total of 48 pittu players, including 33 males and 15 females, who participated in the Second Senior National Pittu Championship organized by the Madhya Pradesh Pittu Association, under the Pittu Federation of India. The age range of the participants was 15–22 years. A sprint time test was administered, measuring the players’ performance over a distance of 20 m. Demographic variables and sprint performance data were collected for analysis. Results: The study presents valuable data of sprint performance measured by 20-m sprint performance test. A significant difference (P < 0.05) in weight (P = 0.003), bone mass (P = 0.023), and muscle mass (P = 0.0001) was observed between male and female participants in terms of sprint time performance. Furthermore, the findings of the study revealed a negative correlation between sprint performance and specific demographic variables, including weight (P = 0.003), bone mass (P = 0.023), and muscle mass (P = 0.0001). Conclusion: The findings shed light on the impact of gender on sprint performance in pittu players, emphasizing the importance of considering physiological characteristics when assessing and optimizing players’ performance in this traditional Indian sport. This study also highlights the negative correlation and significant differences associated with various physiological factors in relation to sprint time performance in pittu players.

Problem statement: In today’s sports world, coaching and training methods are the subject of intensive competition amongst rivals. Innovative technologies, methodologies and preparation methods are employed to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. Effective performance measurement, statistical analysis and data based decision taking have been identified as key elements towards efficient performance management. The statistical approach has been emphasized in order to fill the gaps in athlete’s preparation and improve performance. There is need to better connect the dots between the methods of statistical analysis and training and coaching methods used to improve the performance of an athlete or a team. Approach: Industry giants such as Motorola, General Electric and other improved the quality of their products through a statistically driven, six sigma methodology. Literatures in the six sigma performance measurement and improvement in industry, as well as traditional coaching in sports had been extensively reviewed. Research was carried out to establish potential application of six sigma in performance measurement and improvement in sports. Results: The six sigma approach was identified as a new method in measuring, analyzing, improving and analyzing sports performance and two examples were given. The methodology was applied on one example of data collected by authors over years of performance of a basketball team. Direction for further studies in the application of six sigma methodology in team and individual performance coaching and management were also identified. Conclusion: The results of this study determined that there is significant potential to successfully introduce the six sigma methodology of measurement, analysis and improvement in athletic performance. This new direction of analysis involved augmenting the existing traditional methods of coaching and performance management with a powerful methodology that clearly identifies root cause of athletic performance level, making it easier for the coach to take decisions and design a successful development plan.

The aim of the paper is to explore the consequences of the intensification of competition among the most successful countries at the Olympic Games – the sports powers – for participating countries, potential host countries and the International Olympic Committee. The paper begins by tracing briefly the emergence of increasingly sophisticated and expensive elite sports systems and then examines some of the characteristics of these systems paying particular attention to the extent to which selected major sports powers and medium powers have developed a competitive advantage in a relatively narrow range of sports. Data for the paper were collected through the analysis of a range of financial and sport performance data and the analysis of political indices of democracy. The main findings of the paper are as follows: (1) identifying sports in which a country has a relative competitive advantage remains crucial for the continuing success of major sports powers and is becoming increasingly important for medium sports powers; (2) the cost of maintaining a country's relative position in the medals table is considerable and arguably locks countries on to a path from which it is difficult for them to deviate; (3) the increasing concern with providing security for the Games may have a deterrent effect on the willingness of more open democratic countries to bid to host the Games; (4) the International Olympic Committee faces a potential challenge in providing the majority of countries that attend the Games, but which do not win a medal, with a return on their investment in the Olympics.

BackgroundLongitudinal performance tracking in sports science is crucial for accurate talent identification and prognostic prediction of future performance. However, traditional methods often struggle with the complexities of unbalanced datasets and inconsistent repeated measures.PurposeThis study aimed to analyze the longitudinal performance development of female 60 m sprint runners using linear mixed effects models (LMM). We sought to generate a practical tool for coaches and researchers to establish benchmarks and predict performance development.MethodsWe analyzed 41,123 race results from 8,732 female 60 m track sprinters aged 6–15 years, collected from the Swiss Athletics online database between 2006 and 2021. Only season-best times per athlete and only athletes with at least 3 season-best times in their career were included. LMM was used to generate performance trajectories, benchmarks, and individual predictions. A practical software tool was developed and made available to allow individual performance prediction based on race times from previous seasons. In addition, classic empirical percentile curves were constructed using the Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) method.ResultsLMM handled the dataset's complexities, producing robust longitudinal performance trajectories. Compared to empirical percentiles generated using the LMS method, which provided a retrospective view of performance development, the mixed model approach identified individualized longitudinal performance developments and estimated predictions of future performance. The best-fitting model included log-transformed chronological age (CA) as a fixed effect and random intercepts and slopes for each athlete. This model explained 59% of the variance through fixed effects (marginal R2) and 93% through combined fixed and random effects (conditional R2).ConclusionLMM provided longitudinal sport performance data, enabling the establishment of performance benchmarking and prediction of future performance. The software tool can assist coaches in setting realistic training goals and identifying promising athletes.
