Interactive Creation of Virtual Worlds Using Procedural Sketching

In this paper we present a system that automatically generates a 3D virtual world from a virtual institution (VI) specification, namely of activities that will take place in the virtual world. A virtual institution is an interaction environment where both human and software agents participate in a joint 3D virtual world. A VI is visualized as a 3D building composed of rooms representing the different activities defined in its specification. To support the generation of the 3D scene, we propose an extension of shape grammars called virtual world grammar (VWG). A VWG incorporates information about the definition of the activities, properties of the different shapes (i.e spaces), functions to evaluate and validate the generated design, and a set of heuristics to guide the generation process. A definition and execution of Virtual World Grammars and a 3D transformation mechanism are integrated in a so called Virtual World Builder Toolkit (VWBT).

A declarative approach to procedural modeling of virtual worlds

Functional brain connectivity from fMRI studies has become an important tool in studying functional interactions in the human brain as a complex network. Most recently, research has started focusing on whole brain functional networks at the voxel-level, where fMRI time-signals at each voxel are correlated with every other voxel in the brain to determine their functional connectivity. For a typical 4mm isotropic voxel resolution, this results in connectivity networks with more than twenty thousand nodes and over 400 million links. These cannot be effectively visualized or interactively explored using node-link representations, and due to their size are challenging to show as correlation matrix bitmaps. In this paper, we present a number of methods for the visualization and interactive visual analysis of this new high resolution brain network data, both in its matrix representation as well as in its anatomical context. We have implemented these methods in a GPU raycasting framework that enables real-time interaction, such as network probing and volume deformation, as well as real-time filtering. The techniques are integrated in a visual analysis application in which the different views are coupled, supporting linked interaction. Furthermore, we allow visual comparison of different brain networks with side-by-side and difference visualization. We have evaluated our approach via case studies with domain scientists at two different university medical centers.

Graph databases are becoming pervasive in several application scenarios such as the Semantic Web, social and biological networks, and geographical databases, to name a few. However, specifying a graph query is a cumbersome task for non-expert users because graph databases (i) are usually of large size hence difficult to visualize and (ii) do not carry proper metadata as there is no clear distinction between the instances and the schemas. We present GPS, a system for interactive path query specification on graph databases, which assists the user to specify path queries defined by regular expressions. The user is interactively asked to visualize small fragments of the graph and to label nodes of interest as positive or negative, depending on whether or not she would like the nodes as part of the query result. After each interaction, the system prunes the uninformative nodes i.e., those that do not add any information about the user's goal query. Thus, the system also guides the user to specify her goal query with a minimal number of interactions.

Purpose– This paper examines the three-dimensional (3D)virtual world users’ perceptions of authenticity and trustworthiness in the virtual prototypes and users’ potential purchase behavior in the real-world settings. The 3D virtual worlds provide a new platform that exhibits virtual prototypes as a promotion channel for new products of real-world and online service, where users can communicate “face to face” via their representative avatars.Design/methodology/approach– The authors conducted an experiment in Second Life and collected data in a post-study questionnaire to test our proposed conceptual model. Structural equation modeling was the main methodology.Findings– The research results showed that 3D virtual world users obtained a high sense of telepresence and social presence. The sense of telepresence positively leads to users’ perceptions of online trust in the virtual prototypes and thus increases their intention to purchase real-world objects; the users’ sense of social presence positively associates to their perceptions of authenticity and online trust and, therefore, their purchase intention.Research limitations/implications– In survey research, the common method variance is a problem. A more robust way is to use objective measures.Practical implications– A new channel was proposed for businesses to enhance their online strategies that will increase their business value.Social implications– 3D virtual world is also a cutting-edge platform for remote education, public information service, etc.Originality/value– This paper initially contributes to the literature that interprets underlying factors in 3D virtual worlds associated to purchase intention in real-world objects. We demonstrated the advantages, i.e. the communication efficacy and vivid virtual design in the 3D user-generated environment.

3D virtual worlds are networked environments designed using the metaphor of architecture. Recent developments in 3D virtual worlds focus on interactivity, flexibility and adaptability. Rather than creating virtual environments in which the objects have intelligent behaviours, our research takes a different approach to develop an agent model that is associated with an individual person in the 3D virtual world as a personal design agent. This paper presents a Generative Design Agent (GDA), a kind of rational agent capable of representing a person in a virtual world and designing, implementing and demolishing 3D virtual places based on the occupants’ current needs in the virtual world. The core of a GDA’s design component is a generative design grammar that is able to capture a style of 3D virtual worlds. 3D virtual worlds designed using the GDA model is another kind of architecture for the “moment”.

This paper describes two approaches to the automatic generation of behavioral VHDL models from descriptions written in natural language. Both approaches are based on a modeling style in which behavior is represented by a system of interconnected processes. The first approach employs a semantic grammar to directly generate a single VHDL process from a paragraph written in a restricted English called ModelSpeak. The second approach accepts more general English and generates models consisting of multiple processes. series of sentences describing the behavior of a single process and generated correct VHDL code for it. This interface requires the behavior be expressed in a highly restricted English called ModelSpeak (10). Conditional expressions (if statements) may be nested to two levels, and interaction is invoked by the interface to resolve scope ambiguity of loops. This interface is implemented with a semantic grammar (3) in Prolog. The second interface (Approach II) to the Modeler's Assistant for natural language is substantially more complex, but accepts more general English expressions and generates multiple-process models. In this approach, each sentence is parsed by a bottom-up, parallel chart parser to generate a set of valid parse trees. The trees are examined by a Semantic Analyzer (7) to determine one which is semantically correct, and a conceptual graph (14) (semantic network) of its meaning is generated. Once the conceptual graph of individual sentences are joined together (12), a program called the Linker (8) analyzes the graph to produce a Process Model Graph and VHDL process code for the Modeler's Assistant. Nodes in the conceptual graph representing verbs typically generate processes or the conditions which govern them. Nodes representing objects generate signals. The modeling style underlying the Linker produces a sizable collection of processes, each consisting of a single if_then statement. To avoid unnecessary bus resolutions, multiple processes assigning to the same signal are merged. Since signal types are generally not expressed in the English description, they may be added interactively later. Before describing the approaches in more detail, related research on natural language interfaces is reviewed briefly.

On the Web and on informatics systems, 3D virtual worlds used become big both in number and in size. Therefore, we propose in this paper a new method for retrieving 3D virtual worlds based on the semantics and the content. Firstly, we propose a new classified database of 3D virtual worlds given in VRML format. To achieve the semantic method, we construct an ontology that describes virtual worlds in various aspects including their contents (3D objects building a virtual world) and information about their contents (authors, file format, etc). This ontology is presented by OWL, the W3C recommended language. So as to extract desired 3D scenes from the proposed database we use the SPARQL query language. We propose finally a shape based method for searching desired virtual worlds by content in this database. This method is based on a new distance (metric) that define the similarity between virtual worlds. This method is evaluated using the recall vs. precision curves.

Over the past three years (2006–2008), the medical/health and public health communities have shown a growing interest in using online 3D virtual worlds like Second Life® (http://secondlife.com/) for health education, community outreach, training and simulations purposes. 3D virtual worlds are seen as the precursors of ‘Web 3D’, the next major iteration of the Internet that will follow in the coming years. This paper provides a tour of several flagship Web 3D experiences in Second Life®, including Play2Train Islands (emergency preparedness training), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—CDC Island (public health), Karuna Island (AIDS support and information), Tox Town at Virtual NLM Island (US National Library of Medicine - environmental health), and Jefferson’s Occupational Therapy Center. We also discuss the potential and future of Web 3D. These are still early days of 3D virtual worlds, and there are still many more untapped potentials and affordances of 3D virtual worlds that are yet to be explored, as the technology matures further and improves over the coming months and years.

Natural and Anthropogenic Drivers of Water Quality in the Normanby Basin and Princess Charlotte Bay, Cape York Peninsula, Australia

Within most architecture and design schools, 3D virtual worlds are traditionally perceived and used as a CAAD tool for modelling and collaboration. Building on the understanding of virtual worlds as the extension of our physical environments where people can inhabit and participate in a variety of activities, we teach designing virtual worlds as a design subject which considers 3D virtual worlds as a different kind of environment design other than a technical tool for supporting design simulation and collaboration. This paper reports on our teaching experience, as well as discusses the principles for designing and teaching in 3D virtual worlds.

This project seeks to demonstrate the use of remote experimentation and 3D virtual environments applied to the teaching-learning in the areas of exact sciences-physics. In proposing the combination of remote experimentation and 3D virtual worlds in teaching-learning process, we intend to achieve greater geographic coverage, contributing to the construction of new methodologies of teaching support, speed of access and foremost motivation for students to continue in scientific study of the technology areas. The proposed architecture is based on a model implemented fully featured open source and open hardware. The virtual world was built in OpenSim software and integrated it a remote physics experiment called “electrical panel”. Accessing the virtual world the user has total control of the experiment within the 3D virtual world.

An important security aspect of Virtual Worlds (in particular Virtual Worlds oriented towards commercial activities) is controlling participants’ adherence to the social norms (rules of behavior) and making them follow the acceptable interaction patterns. Rules of behavior in the physical world are usually enforced through a post factum punishment, while in computer-controlled environments like Virtual Worlds we can simply block the actions that are inconsistent with the rules and eliminate rule violations as such. In order to facilitate enforcing the rules in such automatic manner and allow for frequent rule changes, the rules have to be expressed in a formal way, so that the software can detect both the rules and the actions that can potentially violate them. In this chapter the authors introduce the concept of Virtual Institutions that are Virtual Worlds with normative regulation of interactions. For development of such systems the authors employ the Virtual Institutions Methodology that separates the development of Normative Virtual Worlds into two independent phases: formal specification of the institutional rules and design of the 3D interaction environment. The methodology is supplied with a set of graphical tools that support the development process on every level, from specification to deployment. The resulting system is capable of enforcing the social norms on the Virtual Worlds’ participants and ensuring the validity of their interactions.

This thesis focuses the attention on the interaction forces between negatively charged carboxyl and sulfate latex particles with adsorbed on them respectively different generations of cationic poly(amido amine) PAMAM dendrimers and Linear (Polyethylene imine) (LPEI) having two different molecular masses. Those systems were investigated through the colloidal probe technique based on atomic force microscopy (AFM). Tuning the dendrimers/polyelectrolytes dose adsorbed, the interaction forces are observed to switch from repulsive into attractive and back to repulsive again in the both cases. Close to the IEP, the surface of the whole particle is totally neutralized by the adsorbtion of the dendrimers/polyelectrolytes. In the case of dendrimers, this situation is described by the sum of two attractive forces: a long range van der Waals interaction and short range non-DLVO forces given by patch charge interactions. In the case of LPEI the attractive forces are described in term of the pure DLVO theory.

Exchange of knowledge and ideas, building up a social network and gaining the specific expertise are the first most important steps before starting an own business or enterprise. Business incubator programs and also university innovation courses try to provide these services and impart the according knowledge to start-up entrepreneurs. Especially for potential entrepreneurs already in workforce who want to study further it is hard to find time for training sessions or workshops offered by incubators. Virtual 3D Worlds can support the needs of start-up entrepreneurs who cannot participate at local meetings, so that they can build up social contacts to peers, experts and also to potential financiers, but have also the possibility to participate in virtual seminars and workshops to gain the required knowledge. This paper focuses on identifying advantages of using Virtual 3D Worlds to enhance the imparting of the required expertise to start a business and points out ways to improve learning effects. Within this framework a Virtual 3D World especially for incubation services is implemented followed by an evaluation by students, domain experts and also pedagogical and cognitive science experts. Two different and independent studies were used to identify issues and potentials of the designed Virtual Incubator World and should also help to generalize the findings to the field of research.
