Interactive multimedia communications at the presentation layer

Application-specific extensions of a processor provide an efficient mechanism that meets the growing performance and power demands of portable embedded applications such as interactive multimedia communications. This work investigates the use of both the luminance and chrominance components in color image- and video-processing applications and proposes a color-aware instruction set extension (CAX) that improves the performance of color multimedia-processing applications. The CAX ISA is able to exploit a new level of subword parallelism not reachable by current multimedia extensions. Unlike typical multimedia extensions (e.g., Intel MMX, MIPS MDMX, and AMD 3DNow!), CAX instructions support parallel operations on two-packed 16-bit (6:5:5) YCbCr color pixels in a 32-bit datapath width and obtain substantial performance and code density improvements through direct support for color data processing rather than depending solely on generic subword parallelism. The results on a set of media benchmark applications indicate that the CAX versions achieve a speedup ranging from 3x to 5.8x while reducing energy consumption from 68% to 83% over the baseline versions on an identically-configured, dynamically-scheduled superscalar processor. The CAX versions also outperform the MDMX (MIPS multimedia extension) performance.

With multiple mediums of interaction available, it has become essential for a designer to be able to choose the medium that can be most effective for the chosen user. The popular mediums identified for the interactive study are special effects, Cel-animation, Puppetry, Video and Stop-motion animation. Case studies were made available to a group of 40 users, so as to be able to get an exposure of the available mediums of interactive multimedia communication. The findings from the study gave a surprising revelation of the preference of the users in choosing the medium for the empiricism with more than half the users preferring the stop-motion medium to be used to communicate. The study focuses on the user-centered empirical methodology to reveal the vein of the interactivity which was the user having a flexibility of using the expertise of using observation, being able to create which is an inventive process, an appreciation of the invention to interact by studying the inventive user-centered empirical methodology to make the design effective for its aesthetics, semiotics and semantics in design.

The unprecedented freedom for users to control the scope and sequence of their interactions with hypermedia systems presents many challenges to those who design and study these systems in educational settings. Early efforts to develop hypermedia systems revealed that the node-link structure of such systems is both advantageous and problematic (Conklin, 1987). When users have the freedom to follow any of a multitude of link permutations, disorientation often results. Further, without appropriate training, novice users do not possess the strategies necessary for effective "browsing" of large hypermedia documents (Duffy & Knuth, 1991). It has also been noted that the purpose for using the system or the task that the users are engaged in can influence patterns of interaction with hypermedia systems (Nelson, 1991). Many designers, therefore, advocate that features such as visual maps, database search facilities and guided tours be included in hypermedia systems to alleviate some of these problems (e.g. Hammond, 1989; Laurel, 1990, 1991).With the emergence of hypermedia systems as a major architecture for educational and other information-oriented software comes the related problem of how to document and analyze user interactions with such systems for the purposes of research and evaluation. There are a variety of interface design strategies that impact on how a system performs and should be evaluated. Many hypermedia systems to date have employed a "browsing" interface, but alternative approaches are also emerging (Nelson & Palumbo, 1992). Regardless of the type of interface, many questions can be generated when studying the interactions of users with hypermedia systems. For example, how many users chose to follow a particular link, and why was one link chosen over another? How does the choice of one link affect choices of subsequent links? When are graphic images, animations and video segments accessed? What user tasks are appropriate for guiding interaction with the system? What kinds of strategies do users develop while working with hypermedia systems? These and many other questions need answers when designing, developing and evaluating hypermedia applications for education and other settings, and provide the focus for this short article.A wealth of user interaction data can be easily collected within many hypermedia development environments in order to study aspects of the interface, including the nature of user navigation patterns, the time spent at each node and the use of help and orienting facilities. The data can represent the paths a user follows through the system, and the choices made at each node in the system. The problem is that because of the nature of this data, traditional methods of analysis such as surveys or pretest-posttest designs, are not particularly effective for determining usability or comparing alternative interface designs. Researchers have had to develop new techniques for analyzing patterns of user interaction in order to evaluate the design and effectiveness of hypermedia systems (Misanchuk & Schwier, 1992). There is a need to categorize and compare groups of users in order to compare the effectiveness of alternative system features, as well as describing characteristics of interaction by individual users within the same system.

The next generation of interactive multimedia documents can contain both static media, e.g., text, graph, image, and continuous media, e.g., audio and video, and can provide user interactions in distributed environments. However, the temporal information of multimedia documents cannot be described using traditional document structures, e.g., Open Document Architecture (ODA) and Standard Generalized Mark-up Language (SGML); the continuous transmission of media units also raises some new synchronization problems, which have not been met before, for processing user interactions. Thus, developing a distributed interactive multimedia document system should resolve the issues of document model, presentation control architecture, and control scheme. In this paper, we (i) propose a new multimedia document model that contains the logical structure, the layout structure, and the temporal structure to formally describe multimedia documents, and (ii) point out main interaction-based synchronization problems, and propose a control architecture and a token-based control scheme to solve these interaction-based synchronization problems. Based on the proposed document model, control architecture, and control scheme, a distributed interactive multimedia document development mechanism, which is called MING-I, is developed on SUN workstations.

Computer and multimedia technology plays an increasingly important role in education. However, current educational multimedia systems suffer from a major drawback that they do not support active engagement from users. In this paper we present a system that overcomes the hurdle. Our system offers rich user interactivity; it naturally supports and invites user involvement in a multimedia presentation. In the paper we first categorize the different levels of user interactivity that we deem vital for an interactive multimedia system, and then we describe a system design that enables active engagement.

The rapid advancement of digital technology in the 21st century has significantly influenced educational practices, including instructional strategies used in the classroom. The expository strategy, which emphasizes structured and systematic knowledge delivery from educators to learners, remains widely applied due to its efficiency in conveying conceptual material. This study aims to analyze the role of technology in strengthening the implementation of expository strategies in contemporary learning environments. Using a literature review method, this study examines various scholarly sources related to the integration of digital tools in teaching practices. The results reveal that technology, such as e-learning platforms, interactive multimedia, and digital presentation tools, enhances the effectiveness of expository instruction by increasing student engagement, improving comprehension, and providing more dynamic learning experiences. In addition, technology allows greater flexibility and accessibility, enabling learners to revisit materials beyond classroom settings. Therefore, integrating technology into expository strategies not only sustains their relevance but also improves the overall quality of education in the 21st century. It is recommended that educators continuously develop their digital literacy and pedagogical skills to optimize technology use in teaching.

Object Composition Petri Nets, Priority Petri Nets, Dynamic OCPN, and Enhanced P-Nets have extended the original Petri Net to achieve the modeling of media synchronization and asynchronous user interactions during multimedia playback. The dynamic Petri Net (DPN) has been conceptualized to tackle existing problems in these two areas of modeling distributed multimedia systems. DPN features dynamic modeling elements which allows iteration and hence is able to reduce graph sizes of synchronous playback models while allowing greater details to be shown. DPN also introduces asynchronous event handling techniques that are powerful and effective. DPN was used in the design and modeling of a multimedia orchestration tool which is a typical representation of an application that works in a distributed multimedia system.

We are interested in the development of distributed multimedia information systems that use the HyTime international standard as the data model and interchange format. We have developed and implemented a prototype system in which interactive multimedia presentations can be stored and retrieved. Sample document instances are externally encoded in HyTime and stored in the database using the HyTime data model. The architecture and operation of our system are presented. Issues related to using a HyTime engine for general multimedia presentation and interchange are discussed.

Communication skills during social interaction at 18 months age, such as comprehension of instructions and play behaviour, have been shown to predict the results on language tests three years later. Accordingly, children with weak communication skills are at risk for persistent problems of language and communication. Problems of communication in social interaction are also common in children with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and ASD (autism spectrum disorder). For different reasons, it is important to identify children who are at risk for language impairment and neuropsychiatric disorders at as an early age as possible. First, early identification allows early intervention, which may increase the chances of a positive outcome for the child. Second, early identification may decrease the risk of secondary problems with behaviour, and social and emotional wellbeing, which are frequently occurring in children with neuropsychiatric disorders. This paper is an overview of the literature focusing on the importance of early communication skills, i.e. language use in a social interaction context. Conclusion: Early communication skills in social interaction are a possible predictor of language impairment and neuropsychiatric disorders, and should therefore be included in early screening procedures. Furthermore, social interaction enhances language development, and can therefore be regarded as a tool in language intervention. This study critically examines the design of multimedia in education. The study begins by reviewing existing media in education and then uses a series of empirical studies to uncover, and then examine the key issues for the design of educational multimedia.<br><br>The research involves two studies. The first, a preliminary study, that identifies specific areas of interest for the research. This study looks at the existing use of an interactive video disc program for training in Price Waterhouse. The literature search, combined with the outcomes of the preliminary study, identified the areas for further research as: the use of video, forms of interaction, and the role of narrative. The main study examines these areas using two phases. The first phase analyses three treatments of the same educational text, on linear video, multimedia, and structured multimedia, each treatment maintaining the same content and narrative structure, but differing in presentation and control. The second phases builds on the results of the first with the creation and analysis of an interactive multimedia program that takes advantage of the identified strengths of multimedia, and specifically tackles problems found in the first phase. Qualitative data collection techniques are used in both phases, and form the basis of the findings.<br><br>The findings are presented as implications for multimedia design, and discuss the use and development of narrative and grammar in multimedia, as well as the importance of carefully designed user interaction and goal definition.

Several scalable media codecs have been standardized in recent years to cope with heterogeneous usage conditions and to aim at always providing audio, video and image content in the best possible quality. Today, interactive multimedia presentations are becoming accessible on handheld terminals and face the same adaptation challenges as the media elements they present: quite diversified screen, memory and processing power capabilities. In this paper, we address the adaptation of multimedia documents by applying the concept of scalability to their presentation.

Hypervideos and interactive multimedia presentations allow the creation of fully interactive and enriched video. It is possible to organize video scenes in a nonlinear way. Additional information can be added to the video ranging from short descriptions to images and more videos. Hypervideos are video-based but also provide navigation between video scenes and additional multimedia elements. Interactive multimedia presentations consist of different media with a temporal and spatial synchronization that can be navigated via hyperlinks. Their creation and description requires description formats, multimedia models, and standards—as well as players. Specialized authoring tools with advanced editing functions allow authors to manage all media files, link and arrange them to an overall presentation, and keep an overview during the whole process. They considerably simplify the creation process compared to writing and editing description documents in simple text editors. Data formats need features that describe interactivity and nonlinear navigation while maintaining temporal and spatial synchronization. Players should be easy to use with extended feature sets keeping elements synchronized. In this article, we analyzed more than 400 papers for relevant work in this field. From the findings we discovered a set of trends and unsolved problems, and propose directions for future research.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;The main problem in this study, along with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has plagued Indonesia for more than a year, has caused various problems and has an impact on various aspects of life, especially in education. To reduce the spread of COVID-19, the government enforces distance learning (PJJ), which also impacts learning Arabic and requires teachers to develop creativity in learning. Using a qualitative field research method, this study aims to determine the creativity of Arabic language teachers in utilizing information technology for distance learning (PJJ) during the covid-19 pandemic. As for some of the media used, such as. Create video content, take advantage of social media, use video conferencing applications such as Zoom and Google Meet to take advantage of educational website services in the form of Google Classroom and Wordwall games. Based on the results of the analysis conducted by the researchers, this study proved that, first, there are various kinds of teacher creativity in learning Arabic online such as interactive multimedia, quizzes with google forms, word wall games, and so on. Second, being able to eliminate student learning boredom by developing teacher creativity based on information technology. Third, it is still necessary to conduct information technology-based creativity development training, especially in learning Arabic, because not all Arabic language teachers can develop information technology-based teaching skills. This study proved that, first, there are various kinds of teacher creativity in learning Arabic online such as interactive multimedia, quizzes with google forms, word wall games, and so on. In an interactive multimedia information system, users should have the flexibility to browse and choose various scenarios they want to see. This means that two-way communications should be captured by the conceptual model. Digital video has gained increasing popularity in many multimedia applications. Instead of sequential access to the video contents, the structuring and modeling of video data so that users can quickly and easily browse and retrieve interesting materials has become an important issue in designing multimedia information systems. An abstract semantic model called the augmented transition network (ATN), which can model video data and user interactions, is proposed in this paper. An ATN and its subnetworks can model video data based on different granularities, such as scenes, shots and key frames. Multimedia input strings are used as inputs for ATNs. The details of how to use multimedia input strings to model video data are also discussed. Key frame selection is based on the temporal and spatial relations of semantic objects in each shot. These relations are captured from our proposed unsupervised video segmentation method, which considers the problem of partitioning each frame as a joint estimation of the partition and class parameter variables. Unlike existing semantic models, which only model multimedia presentation, multimedia database searching or browsing, ATNs together with multimedia input strings can model these three in one framework.

INTRODUCTION: The advancement of a word suggestion system model is driven by the need to enhance user interaction and efficiency in digital communication. Hence, the word suggestion system helps minimize typographical errors and spelling mistakes. Therefore, various traditional methods are used to suggest words to sentences; however, these traditional models are extremely time consuming, prone to errors and tedious. METHODS: Owing to these factors, the present paper focuses on developing a Kannada word suggestion system using cGAN (Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks), as this system is designed to significantly enhance user interaction by offering predictive text suggestions in the Kannada language. RESULTS: The training dataset, which resides on AWS S3, comprises a comprehensive collection of Kannada texts utilized for both training and validation purposes. Furthermore, the implementation of the model leverages the TensorFlow and keras framework, specifically employing long short-term memory (LSTM) networks for effective sequence prediction and generation. LSTMs are particularly advantageous in NLP processing because they can capture long-term dependencies within sequential data. To facilitate user interaction, a web-based interface has been developed using Flask, enabling users to input initial characters and receive dynamically generated Kannada word suggestions. CONCLUSION: This paper not only delves into the application of cGANs within the realm of NLP but also illustrates practical deployment strategies utilizing cloud services and modern web technologies. Overall, the proposed approaches demonstrate the potential of the cGAN in enhancing the user experience through intelligent text prediction systems tailored for the Kannada language.
