Interdisciplinarity and the disciplines

Almost since the very inception of sociology as a discipline, it was widely assumed that social class determined an individual’s religious beliefs, practices, and affiliation. In the later twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, this assumption has been criticized as being overly reductionist by those advocating the role of human agency in the determination of religious subjectivity. This resulted in class being largely ignored within the academic study of religion. In this paper I argue that social class should be revisited as an important category of inquiry within the study of religion. I argue that by applying Sean McCloud’s recent theory of “socially habituated subjectivity” to the relationship between religion and class, it is possible to admit the important connection that exists between certain religious groups and social classes, while not falling prey to the reductionistic theories of the past.

Kerstin Radde-Antweiler gives an overview or a cross section about the religious and ritualistic settings within “Second Life” and explores the question why studies in and around Virtual Worlds represent an important issue in the Study of Religions. In her article about “Virtual Religion. An Approach to a Religious and Ritual Topography of Second Life” she introduces the theoretical concept of an “actor-related religious historiography” which tries to take into account the religiousness of the individual actor.

The article is devoted to a philosophical study of the religious dimension in HAMAS ideology and the influence of a religious factor on the development of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The article provides a valuable and functional analysis of the main programmatic ideological text of HAMAS: those abstracts from this text that directly relate to religious issues are highlighted, a broad involvement of religion in the ideological foundations of HAMAS is demonstrated. The article also analyzes the place of HAMAS in the events during the First Intifada and the role of the movement at the beginning of the Second Intifada. The purpose of the study is to broaden the involvement of the role of religion in the Arab-Israeli conflict in the consideration of Ukrainian philosophy, religious studies and humanities in general, with a view to further utilizing Middle Eastern experience in the study, prevention and resolution of religious conflicts in Ukraine. Iryna Zvyagelska particularly emphasizes the great role of social programs (such as fundraising for low-income Palestinians, organizing youth education, etc.), which she conducts among Hamas Palestinians in the context of expanding the organization's influence. This helped Hamas gain the support of the Palestinians and channel some of the conflict into a religious dimension. Irina Zvyagelska notes that if the settlement of the conflict was accompanied by an improvement in the welfare of Palestinians, the chances of Hamas influence would be significantly reduced. The question of whether the Hamas programming document and its postulate correlates with the real attitude of ordinary Hamas members or leaders to, for example, Jews living outside Israel is undoubtedly important. The question is whether the creation of Hamas influenced the Palestinians, making the religious factor more important and visible in protest circles, or vice versa - Hamas appeared because there was already a certain social demand for the emergence of such a movement. There is a version that, at the very beginning of Hamas's existence, Israeli intelligence services, while underestimating the newly-born structure, were interested in strengthening it to use Hamas in its fight against ORP, seeing it as a more serious threat. During the Second Hamad Intifada, a large number of Palestinian youth were mobilized under flags with radical religious slogans that called for an uncompromising struggle against Israel as occupier, with settlers in the Gaza Strip and with Israeli military, as well as with Israeli soldiers. A brief analysis of some of the HAMAS Charter abstracts and the movement's activities shows a very high level of involvement of the religious component in the Arab-Israeli conflict. HAMAS plays an extremely important role in the Gaza Strip and in the region as a whole. Investigating not only their political activism but also their ideological base is a crucial point for understanding the situation not only among Palestinians and Israelis, but throughout the Middle East. The HAMAS example also shows that the involvement of a religious factor in social conflict significantly increases the risk of exacerbation of the conflict and its transition to a protracted phase with uncertain prospects for peace negotiations. However, the activities of HAMAS show that it is focused on achieving not only purely religious but also specific political, economic, educational and other social and cultural goals. Therefore, in our opinion, it is also possible to rely on these other aspects of HAMAS's efforts to seek peace or at least start peace talks. This should be the subject of a separate future study. In the discourse of contemporary religious studies, the phenomenon of human religiosity can be viewed from any angle of approaches; one of the approaches is understanding religion which is named theological approach. There are two areas of religious studies, namely the teachings and religiosity. Teachings are the texts (oral or written) that are sacred and sources of reference for religious followers. For Islam, the texts are the Qur'an and Hadith. Religiosity is a behavior sourced directly or indirectly from the texts. The purpose of this paper is to understand Islam from its religious side with a theological approach. Theological approach is an approach to religious understanding that emphasizes the form of performance or religious symbols. There are several alternatives offered by theology experts, such as public post-theological, sociological approach, and normative theological approach. Artykuł jest wprowadzeniem do numeru specjalnego poświęconego zagadnieniom relacji pomiędzy społeczno-kulturowym konstruowaniem płci a religią. Prezentuje główne nurty badań nad tymi powiązaniami.

Bu çalışmanın amacı öğrencilerin manevi sağlık ve hayata yönelimi belirlemeye yönelik geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaçla Fisher’ın (2010) geliştirdiği Spiritual Health and Life-Orientation Measure (SHALOM) envanteri Türkçe’ye uyarlanmıştır. Uyarlama çalışması Ankara ve Muş illerinde öğrenim gören üç çalışma grubu kapsamındaki 1591 lise öğrencisi üzerinde yürütülmüştür. Özgün formu dört boyut ve yirmi maddeden oluşan ve dili İngilizce olan envanter, Türkçeye çevrilmiş ve örneklem verileri üzerinde faktör analizleri ve geçerlik ile güvenirlik çalışması uygulanmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda Türkçeye uyarlanan envanter, özgün formu ile benzerlik gösteren dört boyuttan (kişisel, toplumsal, çevresel ve aşkın) oluşmaktadır. Ayrıca envanter boyutlarının iç tutarlık katsayılarının özgün envanter ile mükemmel uyumda olduğu ve ölçeğin amacına hizmet ettiği anlaşılmıştır. Bu sonuçlar dikkate alındığında, öğrencilerinin ruh sağlığı ve hayata yönelimlerinin ölçülmesinde Türkçeye uyarlanan Manevi Sağlık ve Hayata Yönelim Envanterinin, psikoloji, eğitim bilimleri ve sosyal bilimlerin farklı disiplinlerinde kullanılabileceği anlaşılmaktadır. Özet: Toplumsal alanın önemli bir dinamiği ve taşıyıcısı olan din kavramı, 18. Yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren ikili bir ayrıma gitmiş; din kavramı içerisinden, maneviyat kavramı rafine edilmeye başlanmıştır. Din ve maneviyat kavramlarını tanımlamak çok zordur; din, ideoloji ve inanç kurallarına odaklanırken; maneviyat, din ötesine uzanan bireysel deneyim ve karşılıklı ilişkileri merkeze almaktadır. Bu nedenle, farklı maneviyat ve din tanımları farklı bakış açılarından yapılmış ve bu çerçevede geliştirilen ölçeklerle maneviyatı ölçmek amaçlanmıştır. Bununla birlikte, farklı maneviyat ölçekleri ile yapılan çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçlar birbirinden önemli ölçüde farklı olmuştur; bu ise maneviyatın kullanılan ölçeğe bağlı olarak tanımlandığı ve kavramsallaştırıldığı anlamına gelir. Maneviyat üzerine yapılan erken dönem çalışmalarda çoğunlukla din, sağlık, psikoloji ve çalışma hayatı üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Bu çalışmalarda, maneviyat kavramı tanımlandıktan sonra; kavramın sağlık, din, psikoloji ve iş hayatı ile ilişkisi veya insan hayatı için gerekliliği tartışılmaktadır. Batı'da, 1950'lere kadar, din ve maneviyat kavramları birbirleri ile ilişkili biçimde kullanılmıştır. Ancak bugün bu iki kavram neredeyse tamamen birbirinden ayrılmıştır. Literatürde, maneviyatı ölçmek için çok sayıda envanter geliştirme çalışması bulunmaktadır. Envanterin farklı kavramsal temellere dayanarak çalışması gerçeği, ruh sağlığı ve yaşam yönelimi hakkında genel, anlamlı ve tutarlı bir sonuç çıkarmayı zorlaştırır. Ayrıca, maneviyat ölçümlerinin yabancı bir kültürün dinini ve değerlerini yansıttığı gerçeğinden hareketle kapsamlı veya evrensel ölçüm söz konusu olamaz. Bu noktada, Fisher, maneviyatı ölçmek amacıyla geliştirilen ölçme araçlarını "din ile maneviyatı karıştırdıkları", "değerler dünyasına bağlı olmak", "kültürel farklılıkları hesaba katmamak", "ve sadece mistik / manevi tecrübe " noktasında eleştirir. Sonuç olarak, Batı'nın kavramsal yapısında geliştirilen hiçbir ölçümün kültürel esnekliği hesaba katmadığı ve manevi değerlerini evrensel ya da yaygın olarak kabul etmediği söylenebilir.Bu çalışma ile Türk kültürüne adapte edilmesi planlanan, Fisher tarafından geliştirilen SHALOM envanteri, kişilerarası ilişki dünyasını oluşturan dört temel (bireysel, sosyal, çevresel ve aşkın) alana dayanan modele dayanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Fisher'ın çalışmalarında olduğu gibi, maneviyat kavramı, dinden bağımsız ve dinlerin üzerinde olduğu düşünülen farklı yoğunluktaki kavramlarla etkileşimini vurgulamaktadır. Bu bağlamda, maneviyat kavramı, kişinin kişisel alanı, sosyal konumu, doğası ve aşkın gücü ile iletişim içindedir. Bu uyarlama çalışması, öğrencilerin ruhsal sağlık düzeyleri hakkında faydalı bilgiler ve yorumlar sağlayacaktır. Ayrıca kültürel esnekliğe sahip olduğu vurgulanan ve farklı dillere de uyarlanan SHALOM envanterinin Türk kültürüne uyarlanması ile din psikolojisi literatürüne yeni ve farklı bir ölçme aracı sunularak maneviyat kavramının doğasının anlaşılması çalışmaları kolaylaşacaktır.Bu araştırma, öğrenciler için geliştirilen ruhsal sağlık ve yaşam yönelimi ölçeğinin envanterini Türk kültürüne uyarlamak için yapılmıştır. Bu envanter uyarlama çalışması Ankara ve Muş illerindeki üç çalışma grubundan ve 1591 lise öğrencisinden toplanan verilerle yapılmıştır. İlk çalışma grubu 414, ikinci çalışma grubu 788, üçüncü grup ise 389 lise öğrencisinden oluşmuştur. 414 öğrenciden toplanan veriler Açıklayıcı Faktör Analizi (AFA) analizi için, 788 öğrenciden toplanan veriler Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi (DFA) için kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca, envanterin ölçüt geçerliliğini belirlemek için 389 öğrenci kullanılmıştır. Türkçe'ye uyarlanması amaçlanan SHALOM envanterinin asıl dili İngilizce'dir ve çeviri çalışmaları, her iki dilin de dilbilgisi ve anlamsal özelliklerini bilen üç dil uzmanı tarafından ayrı ayrı yürütülmüştür. Çeviri çalışmalarından sonra ölçek örnekleme grubuna uygulanmış ve örneklem veriler üzerinde AFA uygulanmıştır. AFA sonuçları değerlendirildiğinde, orijinal envantere benzeyen bir faktör çatısının oluştuğu tespit edilmiştir. Belirleyici faktörlere, SHALOM'un orijinal formundaki teorik ve boyut isimleri dikkate alınarak uygun isimler (kişisel, çevresel, sosyal ve aşkın) verilmiştir. Yapı geçerliği Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi (DFA) ile teyit edilmiş ve DFA'nın bir sonucu olarak, X2/sd (1.72) oranı ve IFI (0.96) uyum göstergesinin test edilen modele uygun olduğu belirlenmiştir.Sonuç olarak, Manevi Sağlık ve Hayata Yönelim Envanterinin, orijinal envanterde olduğu gibi dört boyuttan oluştuğu, envanter boyutlarının iç tutarlılık katsayılarının asıl envanterle mükemmel uyum içinde olduğu ve ölçeğin amacına hizmet ettiği anlaşılmaktadır. Bu sonuçlar göz önüne alındığında, Türkçe'ye uyarlanmış olan Manevi Sağlık ve Hayata Yönelim Envanterinin, din psikolojisi, eğitim bilimleri ve sosyal bilimlerin farklı disiplinlerinde kullanılabileceği anlaşılmaktadır. Maneviyat, sadece Batılı kuramlar çerçevesinde tanımlanmamalı, İslamın öngördüğü maneviyatın niteliği ve olabilirliği tartışılmalıdır. Dahası İslam maneviyatının tipleri ve boyutları, İslami bir karakterde kültürel öznellik dikkate alınarak belirlenmelidir. Maneviyatı ölçme çalışmalarında, modernitenin evrensel olarak sunduğu insan modeli tek hakikat olarak kabul edilmemelidir. İslam kültür ve tarihi içerisinden süzülerek gelen, bize özgü ve bizi tanımlayan insan modelleri geliştirilmeye çalışılmalıdır. Bu husus, sadece ruh sağlığı/din çalışmalarında değil, genel anlamda din psikolojisi calışmalarında dikkate alınmalıdır. Bunun yanında kültüre özgülük önemsenmeli, Türk medeniyetinin İslam doktrini ile geliştirdiği kültürel birikimden edinilen tecrübeyle maneviyat çalışmalarına yön verilmelidir. Bu açıdan, bu çalışma farklı bir kültüre ait değer ve manevi yönelimi, Türk kültürüne uyarlama amacını gütse de kavramın Batı değerleri ile kurgulanması sorunludur. Ayrıca Batı değerlerinin, İslam değer ve ilkeleri ile benzeşmesine rağmen, uygulamada maneviyat kavramını tam olarak ölçmekte zorlanabileceği öngörülmektedir.

هدف اصلی این پژوهش تبیین دیدگاه‌های مختلف فیلسوفان مسلمان نسبت به آموزش عقلانی و فلسفی به کودکان، در راستای تربیت دینی بایسته می‌باشد. برای دستیابی به این هدف از روش پژوهش تحلیل محتوا و نیز روش تحلیل و استنتاج منطقی بهره گرفته شد. بنابر یافته‌های به‌دست‌آمده، رویکرد تربیت دینی مبتنی بر عقلانیت به دو شکل همگانی و نخبه پرور از یکدیگر متمایز هستند. پاره ای از آثار و اندیشه‌های ابن طفیل، سهروردی، اخوان‌الصفا، ابوریحان، مولانا، ابو علی سینا و شهید مطهری به زبانی ساده، قابل فهم و گاهی حکایت‌گو نه است که فهم آن برای همه امکان پذیر می‌باشد. این رویکرد را می توان تربیت دینی عقلانی از نوع همگانی یا توجه فیلسوفان مسلمان به فلسفه برای همگان دانست که همپوشانی زیادی با «فلسفه برای کودکان» دارد. در مقابل، رویکرد تربیت عقلانی نخبه پرور را می توان در آثار و اندیشه‌های ابن-مسکویه، غزالی، خواجه نصیر و ابن خلدون یافت که به‌طورکلی در گفتگوها و شیوه‌های آموزش فلسفی خود از مضمون‌های عقلانی و انتزاعی پیچیده برای کسانی که به درجه‌های بالاتری از فلسفه رسیده اند، بهره برده اند. این گروه چون ورود کودکان را در وادی فلسفه جایز نمی دانند، برای عوام نیز چنین اجازه‌ای را روا نمی‌دارند. بر این اساس، با پذیرش تربیت عقلانی همگانی و نیز با تقویت این رویکرد با استناد به میراث حکیمان مسلمان در طول تاریخ اندیشه اسلامی می‌توان از موضعی استوارتر به موضوع فلسفه برای کودکان در جامعه اسلامی نگاه کرد و زمینه فلسفیدن برای همه (حتی کودکان) را از طریق آموزش فرایند فلسفیدن، طرح مسائل فلسفی به شکل داستانی و ساده‌سازی مضمون های فلسفی دنبال نمود.

Religion was a recurrent theme in Georg Simmel’s thought. Despite this fact, and despite the current rediscovery of Simmel’s ideas, his insights into religion remain relatively neglected. The task of integrating Simmel’s legacy into the current study of religion remains a continuing challenge. This paper, based on an on-going study of Simmel’s work (involving a close reading of his writings in the original version), refl ects on his conceptualisation of the relationship between religion understood as an objective, social and historical phenomenon and subjective religiosity. In Simmel’s view, the religious perspective – a “particular spiritual quality” or “attitude of the soul”, a way of looking at the world as a whole – constitutes a kind of pre-stage of religion. This particular perspective of a religion-like (religioid) character makes up an individual foundation for religion, but it can also express itself in other cultural pursuits, like science or art. It only becomes religion after it assumes a specifi c form in human interaction. Simmel claims that many human relations have a religious character; faith, which is regarded as the substance of religion, is fi rst a relationship between individuals. Out of the subjective faith-process there develops an object for that faith: the idea of God, who is “the absolute object of human faith”. For Simmel, the idea of God (conceived of as the unity of existence, the coincidentia oppositorum) is constitutive for religion.

The article deals with a problem of using the theory of a speech act in analysis of Christian sacraments in religious studies. Author finds the concept useful for many reasons. Mostly, religious studies are free of problem of truth, because the theory tells only about felicity of creating beliefs or not. According to S. Tambiah, it lets us analyse the scale of magic in religious rituals, also Christian, like sacramental practice. In the article different sacramental theologies, like Catholicism, Orthodox and different Protestant religions (Calvinism, Lutheranism) are looked at in terms of illocutionary power of words used during rituals and their effectiveness. It lets us illustrate the historical process of decreasing of the magical element in interpretation of basic Christian rituals.

Balancing it out: the process by which midwifery students provide care to women following stillbirth in Papua New Guinea

The article is devoted to the early period of the work of the Russian philosopher I.A. Ilyin. Currently, there is still a problem for the historians of philosophy re­garding classification of Ilyin to one or another direction of philosophical thought. During the Moscow period of the thinker's work, he wrote the work “Hegel’s Philosophy as a doctrine of the concreteness of God and man” (1918), which for many years brought him fame as the best interpreter of Hegel, and also the title of Hegelian. The author refutes the established stereotype of the Russian philosopher’s belonging to Hegelianism and neo-Hegelianism basing upon the thinker’s own statements, the assessments of Ilyin’s early work by modern re­searchers and the assessments of Ilyin’s contemporaries devoted to his work on Hegel. Ilyin is certainly rooted in Russian philosophy, and a new view of Hegel’s philosophical system allowed him to embark on the path of religious philosophy. The author points out that in many respects it is the philosophical method, the formation of which took place in the early period of creativity, that becomes the main core of I.A. Ilyin’s concept. References are given to archival materials from the MSU Scientific library, which contain draft notes of the thinker dedicated to the development of the philosophical method. It is concluded that Hegel’s philo­sophy was not the only ideological source that influenced the formation of the method of early Ilyin, known as the “way to evidence”.

The presence of ideology seems to be a common feature in the sociological perspective. Therefore a dialectical debate is required. The policy as implementation of knowledge cannot be considered at the same level of scientific work. Various existential aspects are in question in the scientific field, especially when the religious identity is analysed, in terms of desacralization and sacralization. Beyond civil religion a la Rousseau, other solutions are viable. But cultural relativism is not outside the Church and it is in relationship with religious belonging. Finally a non conflictual secularism is set out.

The thesis studies the collaboration between Sir John Woodroffe and his Bengali friend Atal Bihari Ghose. Together they created the pseudonymous orientalist Arthur Avalon who produced a considerable volume of works on Tantra from 1913 onwards, and brought about a revolution in attitudes to this previously despised branch of the Hindu religion. Woodroffe became identified with Avalon in the public eye, but Ghose was Woodroffe's chief source of the textual knowledge in which 'Arthur Avalon' appeared to be deeply versed. I try to assess Woodroffe's own relationship to Sanskrit and to the texts, and highlight his very extensive use of secondary sources and the knowledge of other Indian people besides Ghose. The thesis also focuses on Woodroffe's social identity in Calcutta which formed the context in which he 'was' Arthur Avalon. To a very unusual degree for someone with a high position under the empire, Woodroffe the High Court Judge of Calcutta Indianized himself, sometimes wearing Indian dress in social or religious contexts, but above all absorbing the world of the Bengali intellectuals of his time, among whom his popularity was widely attested. He had his critics, but he also had an enthusiastic coterie of admirers who were attracted by his Indian nationalism, to which his Tantric studies and supposed Sanskrit learning formed an important adjunct. He can be placed, then, alongside other prominent British supporters of nationalism of the time, such as Annie Besant, Nivedita, and C.F. Andrews. But Woodroffe possibly entered even more deeply into Hinduism (for a time at least), for he is reported to have taken initiation from a Tantric guru and to have practised Tantric sdhani in some form. Best known for The Serpent Power, the book which introduced Kundalini yoga to the west, Woodroffe and Ghose turned the image of Tantra around, from that of a despised magical and orgiastic cult, into a refined spiritual philosophy which greatly enhanced the attraction of Hinduism to later generations of Westerners. This thesis also studies Avalon's 'apologetic' themes by which he made Tantra, first acceptable, then fashionable.

O Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Religião da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo completou quarenta anos de pesquisa e produção sobre diferentes aspectos da religião. Entre eles está a discussão do ensino religioso, que ocorreu de forma explícita a partir de meados dos anos noventa, quando seus pesquisadores iniciaram um processo de compreensão entre o Ensino Religioso e a Ciência da Religião. Este artigo foi produzido a partir do programa Concepções e Recursos do Ensino Religioso no Projeto Concepções e Produção Científica. É uma pesquisa qualitativa bibliográfica resultante da organização de informações para reconstruir a relação de um Programa de Stricto Senso com a implementação dos referenciais teóricos deste componente a partir da Ciência da Religião como sua área de referência.

Citizenship is associated with educational learning which facilitate to get ready our young graduates for the challenges and prospects of a changing World. Citizenship is becoming a corner stone subject in teaching learning process. However, still it is an entrance to a more comprehensive society. So, it was indispensable to explore the function of universities in developing citizenship among graduates. A survey research method was adopted, with a questionnaire and fifteen hundred Master level graduates were selected as sample of the study from fifteen public/private universities of Pakistan. The analysis of data exposed that a substantial number of the graduates having civic characteristics, were significantly in favor to develop sense of responsibility, leadership skills, curricular and co curricular activities, knowledge of current World events, civic research and facilities, law and religious studies, civic literacy and ethical awareness, crime prevention and human rights. For humanizing the civic characteristics and the accessibility as well as sustainability of the civic services in the universities, it is suggested that there should be no gap among learners, faculty and the management. The faculty and management be dedicated to student centered learning and the focus would be on the course learning and deliberate conclusions.
