Digital resources are becoming increasingly complex and are being used in diverse ways. For example, educational resources may be cataloged in digital libraries, used offline by educators and students, or used in a learning management system. In this paper we present the notion of “checking out” complex resources from a digital library for offline download or exchange with another digital library or learning management system. We present a mechanism that enables the customization, download and exchange of complex resources. We show how the mechanism also supports digital library and learning management system exchange formats in a generic fashion with minimal overhead. ABSTRACTThe explosion of availability of information on the Internet requires that libraries evolve into value-added information providers, rather than mere curators of collections. Modern libraries need to stay relevant to a diverse, technologically savvy patron base and to facilitate and add value to the research community, while facing significant resource constraints. To face these challenges, libraries need to embrace digital technologies and library management systems (LMS) in order to work smart and achieve more with less. While LMS systems have been around for decades, libraries can explore the new frontier by embracing open source solutions, like open source software (OSS) library systems, which are free to acquire. They need to collaborate with computer experts and become technologically savvy to harness the full power of OSS solutions to meet the specific needs of the library and patron base. This article provides an overview of the availability, benefits, and drawbacks of various LMS systems and OSS variants, drawing from experiences in the present Indian context.

The main objectives of the study were to identify key features of the digital library management system (DLMS) for developing and managing digital libraries, to reveal the satisfaction level of the library professionals in using digital library management system, and the problems being encountered in using these systems. The current study was quantitative in nature as quantitative measures were applied through a survey research strategy. Keeping in view the nature of the study, a purposive sampling technique was used to collect data from the target librarians who had been involved in operating digital library systems for building digital libraries in their respective libraries. Descriptive and inferential statistical tests were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that in most of the university libraries in Pakistan, free and open source software (FOSS) had been implemented. DSpace was the most widely used software by library professionals in Pakistan. Key features of the digital library software included a user-friendly interface, customization, reliability and security, use of metadata standards (Dublin Core), web-based, advanced searching, consultancy and technical support, sharing e-books to devices (mobile, tabs), full-text searching, use of Boolean operators, and access control. The study recommended that library professionals of universities should be careful in planning library digitization and they should consider the above features before implementing any digital library software in their libraries.

Traditional library systems are gradually being replaced by digital libraries. Digital libraries are developing from simple database-based storage and retrieval to knowledge-based implementation. The fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering algorithm is an example of data collection and data processing technology. It evaluates and draws conclusions based on mathematics, large data, and other technologies. In order to better improve the digital library management system, this paper applied FCM clustering algorithm to the digital library management system. Based on the in-depth study of the FCM clustering algorithm, this paper built a digital library management system. The clustering algorithm was used to cluster library borrowing records and reader information. It provided technical support and suggestions on library collection construction and book purchase and promoted book management to form a good spitting cycle. The experimental results extracted during the evaluation phase demonstrated that the overall error rate of the suggested FCM clustering algorithm for information clustering is 3.66%, which is better than the existing comparative models. This shows that applying the FCM clustering algorithm to a digital library management system has some practical significance.

Digital Library Management Systems are systems that are able to manage collections of digital documents that form Digital Libraries and Digital Archives, and they are currently in a state of evolution. Today, most of the times they are simply places where information resources can be stored and made available, whereas for tomorrow they are becoming an integrated part of the way the user works. To cooperate towards reaching this new type of system, a digital library management system must become a tool that constitutes an active part of the intellectual production process. Annotations are effective means in order to enable an effective interaction between users and digital library management systems, since they are a very well-established practice and are widely used. Annotations are not only a way of explaining and enriching an information resource with personal observations, but also a means of transmitting and sharing ideas in order to improve collaborative work practices. Furthermore, annotations represent a bridge between reading and writing, that facilitates the user’s first approach when they begin dealing with an information resource. Thus, a service able to support annotation capabilities of collection of digital documents can be appealing to the user’s needs. This paper presents the main features of a flexible system capable of managing annotations in an automatic way in order to support users and their annotative practices. Indeed, a flexible architecture allows the design of a system with a widespread usage, so that users can benefit from its functionalities without limitations due to the architecture of a particular system. We named this system Flexible Annotation Service Tool and this paper is devoted to introduce most relevant design choices and characteristics of it.

Objective: To assess library staff’s skills and training requirements in response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Methods: The methodology adopted was a descriptive survey design was employed. The study population consisted of librarians from all academic libraries in both public and private universities in Lusaka Province. The study employed a stratified random sampling technique and data was collected using a standard questionnaire with closed-ended questions and analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: The study underscored the evolving technological landscape in library management, highlighting varying levels of proficiency and confidence among respondents in using digital tools and advanced technologies. While most respondents demonstrated confidence in digital library systems (85%) and familiarity with data analytics tools (70.7%), gaps persisted in advanced areas such as AI-based systems, cloud services, and VR/AR integration, with significant portions reporting only moderate or limited proficiency. Consistent with previous studies, the findings emphasised the importance of targeted training and professional development to bridge these gaps, particularly in emerging Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies. Respondents identified digital literacy, AI, and data analytics as priority training areas, aligning with the demand for enhanced technological competencies. By fostering continuous learning and institutional support, libraries could empower staff to adapt to technological advancements, ensuring innovative and effective service delivery in the digital era. Conclusion: The study revealed a generally positive trend in confidence and familiarity with digital and emerging technologies among library staff, though varying levels of proficiency highlighted areas for growth. Respondents exhibited strong confidence in using digital library management systems, with the majority feeling confident or very confident. Similarly, familiarity with data analytics tools and AI-based systems showed promise, with many respondents reporting comfort and a reasonable level of understanding.

In the past decade, emergencies have occurred in construction projects, directly influencing injuries and casualties due to the dynamic nature of construction. Currently, the practice of developing evacuation routes for most construction projects is presented in a static and non-interactive manner. This involves a two-dimensional evacuation plan that cannot provide a real-time evacuation route. Furthermore, some emergency signs are unclear and do not provide the correct evacuation routedue to construction activities not aligning with the construction progress. Therefore, conventional evacuation plans have limitations and require improvement. Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Augmented Reality (AR) can present the evacuation route position of exit in a three-dimensional and can update the construction work following the construction progress. The objective of this research is to develop a communication system to support the evacuation route in a dynamic nature to assist construction workers and staff in accessing evacuation information such as appropriate evacuation route exit voice and arrow direction distance from the current location to the exit and obstacle avoidance in the construction project. In addition, to validate the proposed system approach, the case study uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Augmented Reality (AR), and a real construction project is executed. Moreover, three engineers, four trainees, and five construction workers participated in evacuating the proposed system. The result indicated that the proposed system could provide the correct evacuation route following the dynamic nature of the construction project.

The increasing use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a tool for communicating design intent in the architecture engineering and construction (AEC) industry has increased the demand for BIM related instruction in Construction programs. For this reason, the importance of including BIM tools in courses is greater now than ever. However, due to limited course time and the great amount of applications and hardware available, it is important to select those tools that have the potential to provide a better user experience, which may lead to enhanced student learning. This article discusses the results of research undertaken to evaluate various hardware options and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) modes that may be beneficial for teaching with BIM related applications in construction education environments. Interactive display technologies have the potential to greatly enhance the educational experience of students, and will provide faculty a tool that can facilitate teaching construction concepts in a more visual and interactive manner.

A real-time fire evacuation system based on the integration of Building Information Modeling and Augmented Reality

Digital library is a self-development needs for the modern library to meet the development requirements of the times, changing the way services and so on. Digital library from the hardware, technology, management and other aspects to objective analysis of the factors of threats to digital library network security. We should face up the problems of digital library network security: digital library network hardware are not hard, the technology of digital library is relatively lag, digital library management system is imperfect and other problems, the government should take active measures to ensure that the library funding, to enhance the level of network hardware, to upgrade LAN and prevention technology, to improve network control technology, network monitoring technology, to strengthen safety management concepts, to prefect the safety management system, and to improve the level of security management modernization for digital library.

This work describes the interface design and interaction of a generic annotation service for Digital Library Management Systems (DLMSs), called Digital Library Annotation Service (DiLAS), that has been designed and is currently undergoing development and user test in the framework of the DELOS European Network of Excellence. The objective of DiLAS is to design and develop an architecture and a framework able to support and evaluate a generic annotation service, i. e. a service that can be easily used into different DLMSs enhancing their User Interfaces (UIs) in order to offer to Digital Library (DL) users a set of uniform, user-tested (under certain required conditions), and recognizable functionalities.

Emerging technologies like massive point cloud from laser scanning and 3D photogrammetry enabled new ways of generating ‘as-built’ building information models (BIM) for existing buildings. It is valuable but also challenging to generate semantic models from point cloud and images in automated ways. In this paper, we present a novel method called Optimization-based Model Generation (OMG) for automated semantic BIM generation. OMG starts from a semantic BIM component dataset and a target measurement such as point cloud, photographs, or floor plans. A fitness function is defined to measure the matching level between an arbitrary BIM model and the target measurement without object recognition. Combinations of digital components are then extensively generated as building models regarding semantic constraints. The fittest model that matches the target measurement best is the result of OMG. The proposed method was demonstrated in reconstructing a 3D model of a demolished building. Advantages of OMG include high-level automation, low requirement on measurement, relationship discovery for components, reusable component libraries, and scalability to new environments.

BIM (building information modelling) has led to substantial improvements in all design steps. Applied mainly as an information management system in the digital design of structures and buildings, only in recent years has the use of BIM also extended to the construction of road infrastructure. The so-called I-BIM (infrastructure building information modelling) methodology supports the designer in the phases of construction and execution of the design considering all aspects related to the project, including sustainability. Through the software “Roads” of “SierraSoft S.r.l.”, in this article, the I-BIM approach has been used to design a 35 km cycle path as sustainable as possible. From an operational point of view, the design of a cycle path section begins with the modelling of the infrastructure in all its aspects: a study of the route, analysis of interference, modelling of the infrastructure (floor plan, profile and sections) and an intersection study. Creating an infrastructure that increases soft mobility vehicles through a comprehensive design, attracting as many users as possible, is the real innovative challenge.
