Interview with Jackie Dietz

(2010). Teaching Bits: What's New with CAUSEweb and MERLOT? Journal of Statistics Education: Vol. 18, No. 2, pp. null.

The Internet has added a new dimension to the teaching of statistics. One of the most important resources for teachers is the Journal of Statistics Education Information Service, which includes the electronic Journal of Statistics Education. This article describes these and other Internet resources available to students and teachers of statistics.

AR: Thanks very much, Nick, for agreeing to be interviewed for the Journal of Statistics Education. I’m anxious to hear your thoughts on statistics education in the present, but let’s start a few y...

A new section for the Journal of Statistics Education is introduced and a call for papers is made.

Statistics instructors and others interested in the teaching of statistics will find many print and nonprint resources on this topic. The print literature on the teaching of statistics is largely anecdotal and comprises mainly recommendations for instruction based on the experiences and intuitions of individual instructors. Less than 30% of the print literature reports the results of empirical studies, but these cover a broad range of topics, including the use of computers in statistics instruction, teaching materials, and teaching strategies. A large portion of the nonempirical literature is devoted to descriptions of statistics courses and specific lessons that, though untested, still provide a resource for instruction. Recently numerous nonprint (electronic) resources for instruction, problem solving, and discussions about statistics instruction have also become available. These include many data sets and other instructional resources, statistics discussion groups, and the electronic Journal of Statistics Education.

Nolan and Temple Lang (2010) argued for the fundamental role of computing in the statistics curriculum. In the intervening decade the statistics education community has acknowledged that computational skills are as important to statistics and data science practice as mathematics. There remains a notable gap, however, between our intentions and our actions. In this special issue of the *Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education* we have assembled a collection of papers that (1) suggest creative structures to integrate computing, (2) describe novel data science skills and habits, and (3) propose ways to teach computational thinking. We believe that it is critical for the community to redouble our efforts to embrace sophisticated computing in the statistics and data science curriculum. We hope that these papers provide useful guidance for the community to move these efforts forward.
