This paper will discuss the theoretical design considerations and the practical integration of quantitative and qualitative methods in disability and rehabilitation research, which have gained recent popularity among researchers of various disciplines. Whereas quantitative experimental and survey approaches allow researchers to draw generalizable conclusions that apply to a particular population as a whole, qualitative methods capture the depth of respondents' experiences in their own words. Qualitative methods may be used to explore new topical areas prior to implementing a population-based survey, or they may follow quantitative approaches to explain findings in greater detail. We will discuss research findings from two recent studies of rehabilitation industry professionals and people with physical disabilities to exemplify the utility of mixed-method designs in disability and rehabilitation research. The article will conclude with recommendations for rehabilitation nursing researchers to apply both qualitative and quantitative methods in their research practice.

Mixed Methods Research Design (MMRD) has been used as a more potent approach in the research field of social and behavioral science. The purpose of this article is to explore and provide information on mixed methods study design. Secondly, the article discusses different categories and perspectives of health-seeking behavior from multiple angles of real social life. Thirdly, it focuses on the relevance and applicability of mixed-method design in understanding subjective and objective aspects of health-seeking behavior acting at the person, family, and community level, such as bio-social profiles and previous experiences with health care. The article has also briefly summarized the philosophy of mixed methods research design and different perspectives on health-seeking behavior. Mixed methods research, is one of the three major research paradigms (quantitative research, qualitative research, and mixed methods research) that is most appropriate to comprehending complicated subjective and objective facts associated to health-seeking behavior. This article will contribute to understanding the strength of mixed-method research design and its use with more holistic thinking on the issues pertaining to health-seeking behavior and human behavior.

Calls for more rigorous psychoanalytic studies have increased over the past decade. The field has been divided by those who assert that psychoanalysis is properly a hermeneutic endeavor and those who see it as a science. A comparable debate is found in research methodology, where qualitative and quantitative methods have often been seen as occupying orthogonal positions. Recently, Mixed Methods Research (MMR) has emerged as a viable "third community" of research, pursuing a pragmatic approach to research endeavors through integrating qualitative and quantitative procedures in a single study design. Mixed Methods Research designs and the terminology associated with this emerging approach are explained, after which the methodology is explored as a potential integrative approach to a psychoanalytic human science. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are reviewed, as well as how they may be used in Mixed Methods Research to study complex human phenomena.

Mixed methods research is becoming an increasingly popular approach in the discipline fields of sociology, psychology, education and health sciences. Calls for the integration of quantitative and qualitative research methods have been advanced in these fields. A key feature of mixed methods research is its methodological pluralism, which frequently results in research which provides broader perspectives than those offered by mono-method designs. The central premise of mixed methods is that the use of quantitative and qualitative approaches in combination provides a better understanding of research problems and complex phenomena than either approach alone. The purpose of this chapter is to review designs of mixed methods research. The study surveys the common designs of mixed methods research and examine the main characteristics of each in terms of purposes, strengths, and issues, and posits suggestions on the application of these designs.

The purpose of this paper was to examine mixed methods research in an attempt to demystify the design thereby allowing those less familiar with its design an opportunity to utilize it in future research. A review of the literature revealed that it has been gaining acceptance among researchers, researchers have begun using mixed methods research, it has the potential to offer more robust research, researchers are encouraged to outline clearly the reason(s) for using mixed methods design, and it is a more complex research design. Mixed methods research has become a valid alternative to either quantitative or qualitative research designs. It offers richer insights into the phenomenon being studied and allows the capture of information that might be missed by utilizing only one research design, enhances the body of knowledge, and generates more questions of interest for future studies that can handle a wider range of research questions because the researcher is not limited to one research design. Researchers will need to be knowledgeable in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods designs.

Qualitative research has gained greater attention in medical research, but it might seem to be unscientific because qualitative and quantitative research methods are grounded in different paradigm. In this article, we introduce three major qualitative research methods frequently used in studies of patient-doctor communications: 1) in-depth interviews; 2) focus group interviews; and, 3) semi-structured interviews. Each qualitative research method has different or common advantages and disadvantages, and which methods should be used depends on the study objectives. Qualitative research and quantitative research are complementary: while quantitative research explains the prevalence or variation of an issue, qualitative research explains the reasons or processes of that prevalence or variation. Combination of the two methods enables the gathering of more comprehensive and explanatory results.

Mixed methods research studies have the potential to answer increasingly complex questions facing early childhood special education (ECSE) researchers. Despite the value that qualitative methods add to mixed methods research designs, most published mixed methods research in special education are quantitatively-dominant. In this article, we aim to describe the critical role of qualitative methods in mixed methods research. We begin by describing the field of special education’s history with qualitative and mixed methods research. Then, we illustrate the critical role of qualitative methods in mixed methods research. We conclude by addressing three tensions the field of ECSE needs to grapple with in order to improve mixed methods research.

The main aim of this article is to discuss the factors a researcher should take into account when selecting the appropriate research design or method (i.e. qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods). The article also discusses sample size determination and sampling procedures in qualitative and quantitative research. Further, the paper has provided an examination of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The study used online desk research to collect data from online public access scholarly databases such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Academia, and many more freely accessible electronic books in research methods. Search terms that were used included, among many, the following: qualitative research, quantitative research, mixed-methods, qualitative and quantitative data collection, qualitative and quantitative data analysis; descriptive and inferential statistics. A wealth of relevant and timely scholarly literature was downloaded, read, and used to write this paper, and draw the conclusion provided. Research is Mix Method research which is a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Quantitative research can be interpreted as a method study which grounded on philosophy positivism, used for researching on population or certain samples, technique taking sample is generally done randomly, data collection using research instrument, data analysis is quantitative/statistical with the aim to test the hypotheses that have been implemented in his book. While the use of qualitative research methods is a data collection technique that is carried out by using the method of observation, interviews and documentation, then the data obtained is analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. After that the data was tested with the validity of the data using source triangulation. The analysis of the data is quantitative/statistical in nature with the aim of testing the hypotheses that have been applied in the book. The results of hypothesis testing on the democratic leadership variable were carried out by the Head of the Dompu Education and Culture Office Branch Office at a sig. 0.0 0 <0.05 on the t test and sig. 0.015 <0.05 on the F test and a value of Fgitung 5.258 > 4.30, so there is a significant influence of democratic leadership variables on employee performance variables. This means that the higher the democratic leadership style, the higher the performance of employees at the Dompu Education and Culture Office Branch Office, so between both of them there is correlation.

There are a growing number of authors arguing the case for integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods within research projects. A study was carried out to identify the amount of published work integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods and to assess the quality of the outcomes of studies purporting to use both methods. Electronic searches of the health literature and critical appraisal of a random sample of papers retrieved was undertaken as well as a hand search of five journals. Over one-quarter (130, or 27%) of the papers from the electronic searches were theoretical discussions about the merits of mixing research methods, 22% (110) were papers purporting to have used mixed methodologies. Critical appraisal of the sample papers showed the qualitative and quantitative elements varied. Where the results of the different parts of the study were integrated, the outcomes from the research were more convincing than they might otherwise have been. Other papers had little discussion about the balance or integration of the different types of results. Hand searching revealed very few mixed method papers. Further work is required to refine and develop ways to mix methods to generate the evidence required to support practice.

Democratic South Africa is engulfed in violent, unethical and anti-social practices and ways of life, which collectively signify a deficit in the moral foundation of our society. These realities suggest an urgency to bring about a new order of socially responsible and civic-minded citizens, beginning in the earliest years. The Early Childhood Development National Curriculum Framework for children from birth to four (2015), however, appears ineffective in achieving this outcome. Its pedagogic approach excludes the equal and simultaneous development of all the human domains. The study, therefore, proposes a holistic Integral Education approach with Ubuntu values for whole child development. Its aim was to determine the extent to which this approach in Early Childhood Development could contribute to the development of social responsibility and civic mindedness. The study adopted exploratory, developmental and intervention designs with qualitative and quantitative (mixed method) research methodologies. The locations of the study were Umbumbulu on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast in South Africa and Adhchini Village, in New Delhi, India. Purposive, stratified and nonprobability sampling was used in the selection of the South African sample in the exploratory phase. This comprised ECD staff, parents and grandparents from six selected ECD sites, as well as key informants. This phase used qualitative research methods of focus group and individual interviews, content analysis of practitioners’ journals and their observations. In the developmental phase, an Integral Education programme with Ubuntu values was developed and implemented in three of the sample ECD sites. Finally, in the evaluation phase, qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to evaluate the implementation of the programme. Learnings from two preschools in India are incorporated in the study. The research findings indicated gaps in the ECD curriculum regarding explicit values that promote social responsibility and a lack of whole child development in its pedagogic approach. Based on these findings, a curriculum framework for integral education at the early childhood level was developed. Finally, the study demonstrated that an effective whole child approach to preschool education, as evidenced in IE with Ubuntu values, has the capacity to develop a new generation of balanced and compassionate citizens for participatory democracy in South Africa.

Background: Case studies are core constructs used in information management research. A persistent challenge for business, information management and social science researchers is how to select a representative sample of cases among a population with diverse characteristics when convenient or purposive sampling is not considered rigorous enough. The context of the study is post-school education, and it involves an investigation of quantitative methods of clustering the population of public technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges in South Africa into groups with a similar level of maturity in terms of their information systems.Objectives: The aim of the study was to propose an evidence-based quantitative method for the selection of cases for case study research and to demonstrate the use and usefulness thereof by clustering public TVET colleges.Method: The clustering method was based on the use of a representative characteristic of the context, as a proxy. In this context of management information systems (MISs), website maturity was used as a proxy and website maturity model theory was used in the development of an evaluation questionnaire. The questionnaire was used for capturing data on website characteristics, which was used to determine website maturity. The websites of the 50 public TVET colleges were evaluated by nine evaluators. Multiple statistical techniques were applied to establish inter-rater reliability and to produce clusters of colleges.Results: The analyses revealed three clusters of public TVET colleges based on their website maturity levels. The first cluster includes three colleges with no websites or websites at a low maturity level. The second cluster consists of 30 colleges with websites at an average maturity level. The third cluster contains 17 colleges with websites at a high maturity level.Conclusion: The main contribution to the knowledge domain is an innovative quantitative method employing a characteristic (in this case website maturity) as a proxy for MIS maturity. The method can be applied in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research, to group a population and thereby simplify the process of sample selection of cases for further in-depth investigation.

The purpose of this research is to analyse the thematic and methodological trends of computational thinking skills-related graduate theses in Turkey. Within the scope of this purpose, a total of 38 works, including 30 Master's and 8 doctoral studies, published in the National Thesis Centre database of YÖK (Council of Higher Education), were analysed using a document analysis model, one of the qualitative research methods. A descriptive content analysis technique was used to examine graduate theses. According to the results of the research, it has been concluded that the effects of programming teaching, robotics, and block-based visual programming on computational thinking skills are examined in graduate theses. It has been determined that a very limited number of design and development studies have been carried out to develop computational thinking skills. It has been observed that the majority of graduate theses were made in the field of Computer Education and Instructional Technology and most theses were published in 2019. It has been concluded that graduate theses are mostly designed by using the quantitative research method and quasi-experimental design, and secondary school sample profile is mostly preferred in the studies. However, it has been seen that the data collected by using a scale, interview, and observation data collection tools are analysed in accordance with predictive analysis techniques. As a result of the research, it has been recommended that design studies should be carried out in which qualitative or mixed research methods are used and especially pre-school sample profiles are preferred.
