Exploring the common principal subspace of deep features in neural networks
We find that different Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) trained with the same dataset share a common principal subspace in latent spaces, no matter in which architectures (e.g., Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Multi-Layer Preceptors (MLPs) and Autoencoders (AEs)) the DNNs were built or even whether labels have been used in training (e.g., supervised, unsupervised, and self-supervised learning). Specifically, we design a new metric $${\mathcal {P}}$$ -vector to represent the principal subspace of deep features learned in a DNN, and propose to measure angles between the principal subspaces using $${\mathcal {P}}$$ -vectors. Small angles (with cosine close to 1.0) have been found in the comparisons between any two DNNs trained with different algorithms/architectures. Furthermore, during the training procedure from random scratch, the angle decrease from a larger one (70°–80° usually) to the small one, which coincides the progress of feature space learning from scratch to convergence. Then, we carry out case studies to measure the angle between the $${\mathcal {P}}$$ -vector and the principal subspace of training dataset, and connect such angle with generalization performance. Extensive experiments with practically-used Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLPs), AEs and CNNs for classification, image reconstruction, and self-supervised learning tasks on MNIST, CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 datasets have been done to support our claims with solid evidences.

Extending earlier work of the authors, this is the first in a series of papers devoted to the vertex-algebraic structure of principal subspaces of standard modules for twisted affine Kac–Moody algebras. In this part, we develop the necessary theory of principal subspaces for the affine Lie algebra [Formula: see text], which we expect can be extended to higher rank algebras. As a "test case", we consider the principal subspace of the basic [Formula: see text]-module and explore its structure in depth.

Intra-personal space modeling proposed by Moghaddam et al. has been successfully applied in face recognition. In their work the regular principal subspaces are derived from the intra-personal spacce using a principal componen analysis and embedded in a probabilistic formulation. In this paper, we derive the principal subspace from the intro-personal kernel space by developing a probabilistic analysis for kernel principal components for face recognition. We test this algorithm on a subset of the FERET database with illumination and facial expression variations. The recognition performance demonstrates its advantage over other traditional subspace approaches.

Kirillov and Reshetikhin conjectured what is now known as the fermionic formula for the decomposition of tensor products of certain finite dimensional modules over quantum affine algebras. This formula can also be extended to the case of $q$-deformations of tensor product multiplicities as recently conjectured by Hatayama et al. (math.QA/9812022 and math.QA/0102113). In its original formulation it is difficult to compute the fermionic formula efficiently. Kleber (q-alg/9611032 and math.QA/9809087) found an algorithm for the simply-laced algebras which overcomes this problem. We present a method which reduces all other cases to the simply-laced case using embeddings of affine algebras. This is the fermionic analogue of the virtual crystal construction by the authors, which is the realization of crystal graphs for arbitrary quantum affine algebras in terms of those of simply-laced type.

Quiver representations and their dense orbits
<p>We can view quiver representations of a fixed dimension vector as an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field $K$. There is an action of the product of general linear groups on each of these varieties where the orbits of the action correspond to isomorphism classes of quiver representation. A $K$-algebra $A$ is said to have the dense orbit property if for each dimension vector, the product of the general linear group acts on each irreducible component of the module variety with a dense orbit. Under certain conditions, a $K$ algebra $A$ is representation finite if and only if it $A$ has the dense orbit property. The implication representation finite implies the dense orbit property is always true. The converse is not true in general, as shown by Chindris, Kinser, and Weyman in \cite{ryan}. Our main theorem of this thesis builds on their work to give a family of representation infinite algebras with the dense orbit property. We also give a conjectured classification of indecomposables with dense orbits. \par</p> <p>In the future, we hope the work presented here can be used to find even more examples of representation infinite algebra with the dense orbit property to then develop deeper theory to classify algebras with the dense orbit property that are representation infinite.</p>

We construct an irreducible representation for the extended affine algebra of type $sl_2$ with coordinates in a quantum torus. We explicitly give formulas using vertex operators similar to those found in the theory of the infinite rank affine algebra $A_{\infty}$.

Methods and results from the representation theory of finite di- mensional algebras have led to many interactions with other areas of mathe- matics. Such areas include the theory of Lie algebras and quantum groups, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and topology, and in particular the new theory of cluster algebras. The aim of this workshop was to further de- velop such interactions and to stimulate progress in the representation theory of algebras.

We construct and study in detail various dual pairs acting on some infinite dimensional Fock representations between a finite dimensional classical Lie group and a completed infinite rank affine algebra associated to an infinite affine Cartan matrix. We give explicit decompositions of a Fock representation into a direct sum of irreducible isotypic subspaces with respect to the action of a dual pair, present explicit formulas for the highest weight vectors and calculate the corresponding highest weights. We further outline applications of these dual pairs to the study of tensor products of modules of such an infinite dimensional Lie algebra.
Read moreUrod algebras and Translation of W-algebras
In this work, we introduce Urod algebras associated to simply laced Lie algebras as well as the concept of translation of W-algebras. Both results are achieved by showing that the quantum Hamiltonian reduction commutes with tensoring with integrable representations; that is, for V and L an affine vertex algebra and an integrable affine vertex algebra associated with $\mathfrak {g}$ , we have the vertex algebra isomorphism $H_{DS,f}^{0}(V\otimes L)\cong H_{DS,f}^{0}(V)\otimes L$ , where in the left-hand-side the Drinfeld–Sokolov reduction is taken with respect to the diagonal action of $\widehat {\mathfrak {g}}$ on $V{\otimes } L$ . The proof is based on some new construction of automorphisms of vertex algebras, which may be of independent interest. As corollaries, we get fusion categories of modules of many exceptional W-algebras, and we can construct various corner vertex algebras. A major motivation for this work is that Urod algebras of type A provide a representation theoretic interpretation of the celebrated Nakajima–Yoshioka blowup equations for the moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves on $\mathbb {CP}^{2}$ of an arbitrary rank.

Kostant Pairs of Lie Type and Conformal Embeddings
We deal with some aspects of the theory of conformal embeddings of affine vertex algebras, providing a new proof of the Symmetric Space Theorem and a criterion for conformal embeddings of equal rank subalgebras. We finally study some examples of embeddings at the critical level. We prove a criterion for embeddings at the critical level which enables us to prove equality of certain central elements.
