Joint channel and frequency offset estimation and training sequence design for MIMO systems over frequency selective channels

This paper deals with low-complexity joint channel estimation and decoding for faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling over frequency selective fading channels. The inter-symbol interference (ISI) imposed by FTN signaling and the frequency selective channel are intentionally separated to fully exploit the known structure of the FTN-induced ISI. Colored noise due to the faster sampling rate than that of the Nyquist signaling system is approximated by autoregressive process. A Forney style factor graph representation of the FTN system is developed and Gaussian message passing is performed on the graph. Expectation propagation (EP) is employed to approximate the message from channel decoder to Gaussian distribution. Since the inner product between FTN symbols and channel coefficients is infeasible by belief propagation (BP), we propose to perform variational message passing (VMP) on an equivalent soft node in factor graph to tackle this problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed low-complexity hybrid BP-EP-VMP algorithm outperforms the existing methods in FTN system. Compared with the Nyquist counterpart, FTN signaling with the proposed algorithm is able to increase the transmission rate by over 40%, with only negligible BER performance loss.

We propose a layered space time (LST) transceiver in a multiuser code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile communication system. In particular, we examine a multiuser iterative receiver with joint detection, channel estimation and decoding in a frequency selective fading channel. The iterative parallel interference canceller (PIC) with statistics combining is used as the multiuser detection scheme and a least mean square (LMS) adaptive algorithm is applied to estimate the multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) frequency selective fading channel. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of this receiver. It is shown that the performance of the receiver with iterative channel estimation is close to that of the receiver with perfect channel state information (CSI).

We develop an adaptive receiver for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) frequency selective channels that employ space-time block-coded transmissions with cyclic prefixing. The receiver performs both interference suppression and equalization for multiuser transmissions. The structure of the space-time code is exploited to show that the receiver can be implemented on a per-frequency-bin basis rather than on a block-by-block basis. The adaptation scheme requires solving N independent problems each of complexity O(M/sup 2/) per block iteration, where M is the number of users and N is the block size.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology is a technique that can be used to overcome multipath fading. The multipath fading is caused by signals coming from several paths that experience different attenuations, delays and phases. In a multipath condition, an impulse that sent by the transmitter, will be received by the recipient not as an impulse but as a pulse with a spread width that called delay spread. Delay spread can cause intersymbol interference (ISI) and bit translation errors from the information received. To determine the effect of delay spread on the MIMO system, then MIMO system performance research was performed on flat fading and frequency selective fading channels using the Space Time Block Code (STBC) coding technique. This research was conducted using MatLab 2018a software. The simulation results show that the MIMO STBC system performance on flat fading channels is better than the MIMO STBC system performance on the frequency selective fading channel. This result is analyzed based on the value of BER vs. Eb/No and eye diagram.

ABSTRACTWhile inter-symbol interference is not of concern, inter-carrier interference that is caused by carrier frequency offset (CFO) is more concerned in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The estimation of channel impulse response (CIR) is another important parameter of interest in the system. Recently, a number of approaches for the joint estimation of CFO and CIR in OFDM systems have been proposed in the literature, and most of them are traditional maximum-likelihood-based approaches. In this paper, we propose a number of mixture cost-reference particle filtering (CRPF) approaches for joint estimation of CIR and CFO, and a couple of them can be applied without the knowledge of both state and measurement noise statistics. Conventional least mean squares algorithm or recursive least squares algorithm is jointly employed with recently developed CRPF for nonlinear and multiple parameters estimation in OFDM systems. The computer simulation results show that mixture CRPFs are more robust against particle impoverishment (PI) problem than standard mixture particle filtering (PF) and mixture regularized PF (RPF) approaches although RPF was particularly developed to tackle the PI problem. In this paper, we investigate a number of mixture PF approaches including ones that do not need the information of noise statistics for the joint estimation of CFO and channel in OFDM systems.

This paper deals with the problem of joint timing error, frequency offset and channel estimation in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) frequency selective channels. Two equivalent signal models with frequency offset and timing error are given, and then a joint estimation method is derived. The proposed estimation method consists of two steps. Firstly, a maximum-likelihood (ML) frequency offset (FO) estimator is proposed based on the second signal model. Secondly, based on the FO estimate, we formulate the timing error and channel estimation as a problem of composite hypothesis testing according to the first signal model, and then solve the problem by the composite hypothesis testing approaches. Simulation results are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We consider a three-node wireless relay system with frequency selective quasi-static fading channels between the nodes. We assume practical constraints require the relay to operate in half-duplex mode and employ a low-complexity non-orthogonal amplify-forward protocol. Assuming full channel state information and optimal energy allocation between source and relay, we study upper bounds of the outage probability for such channels. Compared to relay systems in flat fading channels, our results reveal that the additional diversity offered by frequency selective fading channels significantly improves outage performance. The results also suggest, however, that relays may offer a limited improvement in diversity when multipath fading in the source-destination link is sufficiently rich.

We consider the problem of frequency-offset estimation in frequency selective channels in a data-aided context. More specifically, we address the training sequence selection issue with the goal of providing the most accurate frequency offset estimates. Towards this end, we examine the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the problem at hand. Since it is hardly feasible to derive the training sequence that results in a minimum CRB, an expression for the asymptotic CRB is derived which depends in a simple way on the channel impulse response and the training sequence correlation. Based on the asymptotic CRB, two methods are presented to select an optimal training sequence. Numerical simulations illustrate the estimation performance obtained with these training sequences.

Diversity is an integral technique in the advancement of wireless communications. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology continues to occupy a pivotal position in the fourth-generation (4G) standards and beyond. With the advent of full-dimension (FD) MIMO and massive MIMO, new paradigms are being targeted in the disruptive technology. Third-generation partnership project (3GPP) has also emphasized the advanced MIMO technology for achieving its vision of International Mobile Telephony (IMT) 2020. However, implementing multiple antennas can be cumbersome due to limiting factors such as size, cost, and hardware limitations. In such a scenario, where implementing many antennas is not feasible, the benefits of diversity can be reaped by employing cooperative communication. Single antenna mobiles can share their mobile stations giving rise to a virtual MIMO system. In this paper, the authors have analyzed the performance of cooperative mobile stations in a frequency selective channel. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), known for its robustness against multipath fading, is the modulation technique employed to circumvent the hazardous effects of intersymbol interference (ISI). MIMO is the key technology for achieving capacity advantage and improving link reliability. The blend of these two cutting edge technologies in a cooperative relay system presents encouraging results and inferences. Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) is employed at the relay and the receiver to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Decode and forward (DF) protocol is used at the relay node owing to its regenerative nature and adaptability. The closed-form expressions for bit error rate (BER) and outage probability (Pout) are derived and compared with the experimental results. The effect of power decay factor is analyzed and simulation is done for 2 × 2, 2 × 3, and 2 × 4 transmit and receive antennas. The number of antennas at the relay is kept as 2. The analytical results agree with the simulation results.

In this paper, a transmission of JPEG2000 images using an Unequal Power Allocation (UPA) scheme and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique over a block fading — frequency selective channel is presented. Using instantaneous and average channel state information, power is assigned to each bit in the JPEG2000 bitstream based on its contribution to the decoded image quality. Moreover, the actual total power consumed for transmission is measured and compared with the total power initially assigned. Simulation results show an improvement of up to 10.5 dB in the decoded image quality when the UPA scheme is used. In addition, the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed UPA algorithm in frequency selective block fading channels.

This paper compares diversity combining schemes for the downlink of spread spectrum orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SS-OFDM) systems in frequency selective fading channels. In particular, symbol-level combining after despreading is compared to chip-level combining under maximal ratio combining (MRC) of signals from different diversity branches and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalization of spreading sequences. Symbol-level combining takes place after the operations of MMSE equalization and despreading, whereas the operations of equalization and despreading occur after MRC if chip-level combining is used. Chip-level combining combines diversity samples in an efficient manner while reducing inter-code interference (self-interference) that results from the loss of orthogonality of spreading sequences due to a frequency selective channel. This method is shown to be superior to symbol-level combining when the diversity branches are uncorrelated, and when the branches differ only due to subcarrier interleaving. Novel expressions for the bit error rate (BER) of the two methods, as well as the extension of the analysis to partially loaded systems are presented. The results are relevant to antenna diversity as well as temporal diversity achieved though re-transmission within an ARQ scheme.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has become a very popular method for high data rate wireless communications because of its advantages over single carrier modulation schemes on multipath, frequency selective fading channels. However, intercarrier interference, due to Doppler frequency shifts, and multipath fading severely degrade the performance of OFDM systems. Estimation of channel parameters is required at the receiver. In this paper, we present a channel modeling and estimation method based on the time-frequency representation of the received signal. The discrete evolutionary transform provides a time-frequency procedure to obtain a complete characterization of the multipath, fading, and frequency selective channels. Simulations are used to illustrate the performance of the proposed procedure and to compare it with other time-varying channel estimation techniques.

This work explores the performances of Space-Time and Space Frequency Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with simple two branches transmit diversity scheme. The combination of multiple-antenna and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) provides reliable communications over frequency selective fading channels. We focus on the application of space-time block codes (STBC) and space-frequency block codes (SFBC) in OFDM systems over time-varying and frequency-selective channels. SFBC transmitter shows superior performance in fast varying channels while STBC shows better performance in frequency selective channels. A switching technique is presented that selects an appropriate transmission scheme between the STBC and SFBC assuming Rayleigh fading model.

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is an effective modulation technology using waveform with frequency variation, offering robust performance in high-speed mobile environments and having the ability to obtain diversity gain over frequency selective fading channels. While performance of AFDM under ideal conditions is well-established, the impact of incomplete channel information on AFDM systems employing minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer over frequency-selective channels remains less explored. We study the performance degradation of AFDM with MMSE equalizer caused by incomplete channel information in this letter. To mitigate this degradation and optimize system performance, it is necessary to redesign the AFDM parameters, specifically tailored for MMSE equalization operations under such incomplete channel information. Extensive computer simulations demonstrate the significant performance superiority of AFDM system over frequency selective channels. Crucially, our findings confirm that parameter adjustment is essential for AFDM to achieve optimal performance when only incomplete channel information is available.

The higher data rate of mobile communications has been required for various multimedia services. In DS-CDMA system, one of the solutions to increase the throughput is to use multicode. However, multipath channel destroys the orthogonality of spreading codes, which causes the intercode interference (ICI). ICI gives severe effect on multicode DS-CDMA for BER performance. Conventionally, multicode DS-CDMA system uses the Rake receiver with turbo code, which cannot overcome error floor caused by ICI. In this paper, we propose frequency domain turbo equalization based on minimum mean squared error (FDTE-MMSE) for multicode DS-CDMA in frequency selective channel and evaluate its BER performance by computer simulation. The simulation results show that FDTE-MMSE gives much better performance than the Rake receiver with turbo code in multipath length L > 1.
