Library Use Instruction on Undergraduates’ Utilization of Library Resource

While providing services to high school students, the challenges they face in using library resources and services include a lack of library resources and current books, insufficient knowledge of using library materials, and unawareness of library services, such as borrowing books. Furthermore, some students report that library hours are inadequate. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the utilization of library resources and services at KCP Junior High School. This study aimed to explore the utilization of library resources and services at KCP Junior High School, specifically analyzing the use of the library, level of familiarity, and problems encountered by junior high school students at King’s College of the Philippines. It also sought to identify significant differences between higher and lower grade levels in the use of library resources and services and in the level of familiarity with existing library resources and services. The study employed a quantitative research design, using a questionnaire administered to 161 junior high school students. The T-test was used as the statistical tool to determine the utilization of library resources and services. Results show that junior high school students often utilized the library for academic, personal development, and entertainment/leisure purposes, with an overall mean utilization score of 3.45. They were also familiar with the existing library resources and services, indicated by an overall mean familiarity score of 3.89. Despite this familiarity, various problems were encountered when using the library's resources and services. It is found that there is a significant difference between higher- and lower-grade levels in the use of library resources. Lastly, it was found that there is a substantial difference in the utilization of library resources between higher and lower grade levels, 𝑡 (159) = 2.15, 𝑝 = .033. However, there was no significant difference in the use of library services between these grade levels, t(159) = 0.86, p = .398.

This study examined the relationship between library circulation policy awareness and the use of library resources at Donald Ekong Library, University of Port Harcourt. The research focused on three key policies: loan rules, overdue fines, and borrowing limits. A correlational design was used, and the sample included 180 respondents made up of undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and academic staff. A structured questionnaire was the main tool for data collection. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between awareness of circulation policies and the use of library resources. Users who understood the rules borrowed and returned books properly, avoided fines, and made better use of available materials. The study also found that many users were not fully aware of the policies, which affected how they used the library. The study concluded that awareness of loan rules, fines, and borrowing limits helps users manage borrowed materials better. It was recommended among others that the library should provide regular education on circulation policies using posters, orientation, and digital notices. This will help more users understand the rules and use the library with confidence.

The study sought to determine the relationship between students' background variables and the utilization of library resources among secondary schools students in southern senatorial district of Cross River State. The authors developed a nineteen item student's background questionnaire (SBQ) and twenty two item students utilization of library resource scale (SULIRES) was utilized. The instrument had a correlation coefficient of 0.89 and 0.82 determined using test- retest method. The design adopted in this study is the ex-post facto design, the instrument was administered on a sample of 280 students. The research findings indicated that students' background variables are significantly related to as well as significantly predict their utilization of library resource. Study advocates that parents need to provide the enabling physical and psychological environment for their children to read, study and develop.

Libraries are a primary resource for evidence-based practice. This study, using a critical incident survey administered to 6,788 nurses at 118 hospitals, sought to explore the influence of nurses' use of library resources on both nursing and patient outcomes. In this article, the authors describe the background events motivating this study, the survey methods used, and the study results. They also discuss their findings, noting that use of library resources showed consistently positive relationships with changing advice given to patients, handling patient care differently, avoiding adverse events, and saving time. The authors discuss the study limitations and conclude that the availability and use of library and information resources and services had a positive impact on nursing and patient outcomes, and that nurse managers play an important role both by encouraging nurses to use evidence-based library resources and services and by supporting the availability of these resources in healthcare settings.

The library provides relevant and meaningful information to students and serves as the nursery of information. With the advent of technology, student library usage has reduced significantly over time. This study, which utilized descriptive-correlational and causal-comparative research designs, was conducted to ascertain the important roles of academic library resources and staff on the academic learning of the students. The proportionate stratified sampling technique rendered a total sample of 142 third-year college students. An adapted survey questionnaire was used to collect the required data and the GPA for the students ' academic performance. Test of validity and reliability rendered a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.917 for the library resources utilization and 0.921 for the students’ satisfaction with the services of library staff. Findings revealed that the participants used the library resources extensively and were extremely pleased with the services of the library staff. The participants obtained above-average levels of academic performance. Regression analysis confirmed that library resource utilization and customer service satisfaction significantly predict academic performance.

This study was designed to examine individual information needs in the utilization of library resources by lecturers asactive users in the Imam Bonjol State Islamic University Library Padang. The purpose of this study is to determine theinformation needs of lecturers with the availability of library materials and the extent to which these materials are usedby lecturers and provide recommendations for improvement. This research is a descriptive quantitative research with asample using proported stratified random sampling technique so that the number of samples is 193 people from 376lecturers as active users. The main finding of this study is that there are many library resources such as textbooks,journals, research monographs, research reports, newspapers, indexes/abstracts, internet services, as well asdictionaries/encyclopedias and others. Lecturers use the library mainly for consulting reference materials in the form ofperiodicals especially journal articles in electronic form at 65%. In general, 75% of lecturers need and use the library forresearch purposes and utilize books more than other sources of information. A number of recommendations weremade to improve library usage, but the most prominent suggestion was that the library should acquire more up-to-dateand relevant materials, and lecturers should be informed about newly acquired materials.

SUMMARYInternational students represent an increasingly important group in American higher education. Multiculturalism is valued, and institutions seek to attract a more diverse student and faculty population. Certainly this is important to university libraries as they seek to enhance the educational opportunities and experiences of all students. This manuscript employs a large sample of domestic (i.e., non-international) students and a large sample of international students to examine the research question: Does the country of origin influence the student's perception of library personnel, or their utilization of library resources? Statistical analyses reveal that the two student groups do differ along several dimensions, but are quite similar in other regards. Regression analysis is employed to predict when each group is more likely to seek help when having trouble in the library, and to predict the student's perception of helpful and polite library personnel. PurposeThe purpose of this article is to identify opportunities for effective collaboration between academic libraries and student services offices dedicated to providing services to students of color.Design/methodology/approachA survey research method was used to gather demographic information about students affiliated with one of four “cultural centers” at Washington State University and to generate descriptive statistics regarding their patterns of information use and the degree to which they made use of library resources and services.FindingsFindings are reported in five tables describing library use by students of color as well as their preferences for targeted library programming. Survey results were used to identify a number of potential service enhancements to encourage more effective use of library and information resources by students of color.Research limitations/implicationsSurvey dissemination was limited to those students either actively affiliated with one of four cultural centers sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Services, or involved in the Academic Enrichment programs sponsored by that office. Survey results suggest that additional inquiry is needed into the development of substantive and sustainable partnerships between academic libraries and student services offices dedicated to providing services to students of color.Practical implicationsProvides a number of discrete approaches to providing more effective library resources and services to students of color within the framework both of liaison with academic departments and of co‐curricular service frameworks.Originality/valueBuilds a framework for service‐based liaison with student communities of color that transcends the familiar discussions related to building library collections that reflect the history and experience of racial and ethnic minority groups. Insight into minority student use of libraries and into avenues for collaboration with multicultural student service programs may be useful to librarians on any college campus with a well‐defined framework for minority student services.

The study investigates the relationship between students’ utilisation of information resources through the consultation of information retrieval devices: Abstracts and bibliographies in university of calabar library. The survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised library-registered students of university of calabar. The sample size used for the study consisted of 1523 library-registered students. In order to carry out the investigation successfully, two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The instrument captioned, “Retrieval Devices and Students’ Utilization of Information Resources Questionnaire (RDSUIRQ)” was used for data collection. The instrument was ensured to be valid and reliable. Copies of the questionnaire were administered to the subjects and data were collected and analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result showed significant positive relationships between information retrieval devices of Abstracts and Bibliographies and students’ utilization of information resources in university of calabar library. It therefore follows from this finding that abstracts and bibliographies play a significant role in the utilization of library resources. Based on the findings, recommendations were made, one of which was that librarians should ensure that retrieval devices in their libraries are properly managed for optimum utilization of information resources by students.Keywords: Abstracts and Bibliographies, Retrieval Devices, Students Utilization of Information Resources in University of Calabar Library

University library takes an important role in education and research to drive higher education development and promote to accomplish its missions. We analyzed some common problems in the utilization of university library resources, including information supply, knowledge popularization and characteristic service based on close relationship between library resource utilization and university development and its great significance. Taking relevant experiences of libray at China Three Gorges University for example, this essay discussed the innovative method of utilizing university library resource, including setting up “the second classroom”, providing venture information, strengthening the training of resource supply, carrying on academic lectures etc. to promote the development of talent cultivation, scientific research and social services in university.

ABSTRACTThe present increase in numbers of overseas students in Australian tertiary institutions has implications for libraries. Overseas library literature has identified problem areas in relation to teaching library use to students from different cultural backgrounds, often with limited English skills. Some Australian university libraries are making special provision for such students, but more could be done.

University libraries acquire print information resources such as books and journals as well as electronic information resources to support teaching, learning and research and also facilitate knowledge dissemination. This explains why various library services have been developed to promote and facilitate effective use of recorded information in all formats by users. This paper examines the resources available and services offered by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Library. The methodology used was records on files, interviews and observations. It concludes that in spite of library budget cuts, KNUST Library has made systematic efforts in promoting effective use of its resources by its users. It then makes recommendations to facilitate the more effective and efficient use of KNUST Library resources.

Despite the availability of library resources and encouragement for students to utilize them, observations indicate a significant underutilization of these materials. It highlights the need to understand the factors influencing students' engagement with library resources. To address this gap, the study examines the extent of students' use of library resources, preferred information sources, and difficulties in using them. The study used a descriptive survey research method, involving 322 Cordillera Career Development College students selected through purposive sampling. The primary data source was a validated survey questionnaire. Results of the study show that, in general, students rarely use the library resources; however, general collection books ranked first as the most frequently utilized. Respondents prefer print resources over non-print resources as information sources. Printed books rank as the most preferred information sources. There is no significant difference in students' preference between print and non-print resources. However, students encounter slight difficulties in utilizing library resources. The three most common challenges they face are difficulty locating needed information resources, insufficient materials available for specific topics, and struggles selecting research topics, making finding relevant resources more challenging. With the results, it can be concluded that while students rely on print, specifically books, and non-print resources for their academic needs, they encounter slight difficulties using them. Therefore, it is recommended that the library improve access to print and digital resources, expand and update its book collection, and strengthen information literacy programs to help students navigate and utilize these resources more effectively.

The content of this article was incorrect, this was amended on 10 August 2018. This research work x-rayed the use of library resources in secondary schools in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The research instrument was the questionnaire; and 195 copies of it were administered, while 190 were retrieved and analyzed. Having adopted the descriptive survey research method, the research found out that the library resources available in the secondary school libraries are monographs (textbooks), dictionaries, atlases, magazines newspapers, CD-ROM, audio-visuals and fictions (storybooks, novels, cartoons); of the available library resources, those mainly used by students are monographs (textbooks), dictionaries, newspapers, atlases. Also the research found out that improvement in academic performance, life-long learning skills, information seeking skills, self-study skills are some of the effects the use of school libraries has on the students. The research recommended that school students should be enlightened on the importance of the library, and the organized private sector should partner with schools to sponsor library projects as part of their corporate social responsibilities.Keywords: Library resources, Secondary schools, Use of library, School library

Objective – The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among student library visits, library resource use, library space satisfaction (e.g., quiet study space), and students’ academic performance (i.e., Grade Point Average or GPA) using quantitative data and to better understand how the academic library has an impact on students’ learning from students’ perspectives using qualitative data. Methods – A survey was distributed during the Spring 2018 semester to graduate and undergraduate students at a large public research institution. Survey responses consisted of two types of data: (1) quantitative data pertaining to multiple choice questions related to the student library experience, and (2) qualitative data, including open-ended questions, regarding students’ perceptions of the library’s impact on their learning. Quantitative data was analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlations between students’ library experience and their GPAs, whereas qualitative data was analyzed employing thematic analysis. Results – The key findings from the quantitative data show that student library visits and library space satisfaction were negatively associated with their GPA, whereas most students’ use of library resources (e.g., journal articles and databases) was positively associated with their GPAs. The primary findings from the qualitative data reveal that students perceived the library as a place where they can concentrate and complete their work. Additionally, the students reported that they utilize both the quiet and collaborative study spaces interchangeably depending on their academic needs, and expressed that the library provides them with invaluable resources that enhance their coursework and research. Conclusions – While the findings show that the student library experience was associated with their academic achievements, there were mixed findings in the study. The findings suggest that as a student’s GPA increases, their in-person library visits and library space satisfaction decrease. On the other hand, as a student’s GPA increases, their library resource usage increases. Further investigation is needed to better understand the negative relationship between students’ library visits, library space satisfaction, and their GPAs.
