Lie Structure in Operator Algebras

It is well known that the Lie algebra of derivations of the exceptional Jordan algebra M 3 8 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 or over the field of reals is the exceptional Lie algebra F 4 of Killing-Cartan and that the Lie algebra of linear transformations in M 3 8 leaving a certain cubic norm form defined on M 3 8 invariant is the exceptional Lie algebra E 6 (Chevalley-Schafer [7], Freudenthal [11]). The program envisaged in the present series of papers is the extension of these results and their group analogues to arbitrary central simple Jordan algebras. The present paper gives the definition of the groups and Lie algebras in the general case and gives their determination for special Jordan algebras with some restrictions on the base field. In a second paper we plan to consider the groups of automorphisms of arbitrary reduced exceptional simple Jordan algebras and in a third paper we hope to study the generalized groups of types E 6 which arise from these Jordan algebras.

The effect of structure-preserving perturbations on the solution to a linear system, matrix inversion, and distance to singularity is investigated. Particular attention is paid tolinear and nonlinear structures that form Lie algebras, Jordan algebras and automorphism groups of ascalar product. These include complex symmetric, pseudo-symmetric, persymmetric, skewsymmetric, Hamiltonian, unitary, complex orthogonal and symplectic matrices. Under reasonable assumptions on the scalar product, it is shown that there is little or no difference between structured and unstructured condition numbers and distance to singularity for matrices in Lie and Jordan algebras. Hence, for these classes of matrices, the usual unstructured perturbation analysis is sufficient. It is shown that this is not true in general for structures in automorphism groups. Bounds and computable expressions for the structured condition numbers for a linear system and matrix inversion are derived for these nonlinear structures.Structured backward errors for the approximate solution of linear systems are also considered. Conditions are given for the structured backward error to be finite. For Lie and Jordan algebras it is proved that, whenever the structured backward error is finite, it is within a small factor of or equal to the unstructured one. The same conclusion holds for orthogonal and unitary structures but cannot easily be extended to other matrix groups. This work extends and unifies earlier analyses.

Jordan, von Neumann, and Wigner [5] have classified all finite dimensional Jordan algebras over the reals. The present paper is an attempt to do the same in the infinite dimensional case. The following restriction will be imposed: we assume the Jordan alge- bras are weakly closed Jordan algebras of self-adjoint operators with minimal projections acting on a Hilbert space, i.e. are irreducible JW-algebras of type i.(1) The result is then quite analogous to that in [5], except we do not get hold of the Jordan algebra ~a s of that paper, as should be expected from the work of Albert [1]. We first classify all irreducible JW-algebras of type In, n>~3 (Theorem 3.9). These algebras are roughly all seif-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space over either the reals, the complexes, or the quaternions. Then all JW-factors of type

For a Euclidean Jordan algebra V with the corresponding symmetric cone $\Omega$, we consider the semigroup $\Gamma\sb{\Omega}$ of elements in the automorphism group $G(T\sb{\Omega})$ of the tube domain $V$ + $i\Omega$ which can be extended to $\Omega$ and maps $\Omega$ into itself. A study of this semigroup was first worked out by Koufany in connection to Jordan algebra theory and Lie theory of semigroups. In this work we give a new proof of Koufany's results and generalize up to infinite dimensional Jordan algebras, so called $JB$-algebras. One of the nice examples of the semigroup $\Gamma\sb{\Omega}$ is from the Jordan algebra $Sym(n,\IR$) of symmetric matrices. However, $V\sb{\sigma}$ the set of all self-adjoint operators on $\IR\sp{n}$ with respect to a non-degenerated symmetric bilinear form $\sigma$, is a non-Euclidean Jordan algebra with a cone $\Omega\sb{\sigma}$ which is isomorphic to $\Omega$ of the symmetric cone of $Sym(n,\IR)$. We get an isomorphism of the automorphism groups between two tube domains which also induces an isomorphism between two Lie semigroups. The Lorentzian cone, which is one of the irreducible symmetric cones, is an essential tool in the study of semigroups in Mobius and Lorentzian geometry. J. D. Lawson studied the Mobius and Lorentzian semigroups with an Ol'shanskii decomposition even in the infinite dimensional cases. We study these semigroups via a Jordan algebra theory.

As earlier conjectured by several authors and much later established by Solèr, from the lattice-theory point of view, Quantum Mechanics may be formulated in real, complex or quaternionic Hilbert spaces only. On the other hand, no quantum systems seem to exist that are naturally described in a real or quaternionic Hilbert space. In a previous paper [23], we showed that any quantum system which is elementary from the viewpoint of the Poincaré symmetry group and it is initially described in a real Hilbert space, it can also be described within the standard complex Hilbert space framework. This complex description is unique and more precise than the real one as, for instance, in the complex description, all self-adjoint operators represent observables defined by the symmetry group. The complex picture fulfils the thesis of Solér’s theorem and permits the standard formulation of the quantum Noether’s theorem. The present work is devoted to investigate the remaining case, namely, the possibility of a description of a relativistic elementary quantum system in a quaternionic Hilbert space. Everything is done exploiting recent results of the quaternionic spectral theory that were independently developed. In the initial part of this work, we extend some results of group representation theory and von Neumann algebra theory from the real and complex cases to the quaternionic Hilbert space case. We prove the double commutant theorem also for quaternionic von Neumann algebras (whose proof requires a different procedure with respect to the real and complex cases) and we extend to the quaternionic case a result established in the previous paper concerning the classification of irreducible von Neumann algebras into three categories. In the second part of the paper, we consider an elementary relativistic system within Wigner’s approach defined as a locally-faithful irreducible strongly-continuous unitary representation of the Poincaré group in a quaternionic Hilbert space. We prove that, if the squared-mass operator is non-negative, the system admits a natural, Poincaré invariant and unique up to sign, complex structure which commutes with the whole algebra of observables generated by the representation itself. This complex structure leads to a physically equivalent reformulation of the theory in a complex Hilbert space. Within this complex formulation, differently from what happens in the quaternionic one, all self-adjoint operators represent observables in agreement with Solèr’s thesis, the standard quantum version of Noether theorem may be formulated and the notion of composite system may be given in terms of tensor product of elementary systems. In the third part of the paper, we focus on the physical hypotheses adopted to define a quantum elementary relativistic system relaxing them on the one hand, and making our model physically more general on the other hand. We use a physically more accurate notion of irreducibility regarding the algebra of observables only, we describe the symmetries in terms of automorphisms of the restricted lattice of elementary propositions of the quantum system and we adopt a notion of continuity referred to the states viewed as probability measures on the elementary propositions. Also in this case, the final result proves that there exists a unique (up to sign) Poincaré invariant complex structure making the theory complex and completely fitting into Solèr’s picture. The overall conclusion is that relativistic elementary systems are naturally and better described in complex Hilbert spaces even if starting from a real or quaternionic Hilbert space formulation and this complex description is uniquely fixed by physics.

Operator algebras come in many flavours. For the purpose of this article, however, the term is only used for one of two kinds of self-adjoint algebras of operators on Hilbert space, viz., C*- algebras (which are norm-closed) or von Neumann algebras (which are closed in the topology of pointwise strong convergence or equivalently, in the weak-* topology it inherits as a result of being a Banach dual space). To be fair, there are a number of people in India (eg., Gadadhar Misra, Tirthankar Bhattacharyya, Jaydeb Sarkar, Santanu Dey, etc.,) who work on non-selfadjoint algebras, mostly from the point of view of connections with complex function theory; but in the interest of restricting the size of this paper, I confine myself here to selfadjoint algebras. I apologise for ways in which my own personal taste and limitations colour this depiction of operator algebras. Another instance of this arbitrary personal taste is a decision to concentrate on the work of younger people. Thus, the work of the more senior people who have worked in operator algebras is only seen via their collaborations with younger people: e.g., KRP via Srinivasan and Rajarama Bhat, Kalyan Sinha via Debashish, Partha, Arup, Raja, etc,. and me via Vijay, Srinivasan and Panchugopal. Not long ago, interest in operator algebras in India was restricted to the three centres of the Indian Statistical Institute. Now, I am happy to note that it has spread to IMSc, some IITs, IISERs, NISER, JNU,.... My role in this article has been merely that of compiling inputs from many active Indian operator algebraists that came to my mind. I wrote soliciting a response from a certain number of them, then put together the responses received. (I apologise to those people who were omitted in this process). My colleague, Partha, with the help of his collaborator Arup, agreed to take care of the C*-related inputs, while I take care of the von Neumann-related ones with the help of my collaborator Vijay. What follows are some areas of ongoing research done in von Neumann algebras in India and some names of people doing such work: (a) subfactors and planar algebras, (Vijay Kodiyalam of IMSc, Chennai); (b) quantum dynamical systems and complete positivity (Rajarama Bhat of ISI, Bengaluru); (c) E0 semigroups (R. Srinivasan of CMI, Chennai, and Panchugopal Bikram of NISER, Bhubhaneswar), and (d) Masas in II1 von Neumann algebras and free Araki-Woods factors (Kunal Mukherjee of IIT, Chennai, and Panchugopal Bikram of NISER, Bhubhaneswar).

Given a ternary relation C on a set U and an algebra A, we present a construction of a convolution algebra A(U, C) of U = (U, C) over A. This generalises bothmatrix algebras and algebras obtained from convolution of monoids. To any class of algebras corresponds a class of convolution structures. Our study cases are the classes of commutative, associative, Lie, and Jordan algebras. In each of these classes we give conditions on (U, C) under which A(U, C) is in the same class as A. It turns out that in some situations these conditions are even necessary.

Given a ternary relation C on a set U and an algebra A, we present a construction of a convolution algebra A(U, C) of U = (U, C) over A. This paper is devoted to the structure of complete and perfect Jordan algebras, which are called sympathetic Jordan algebras here. In particular, every perfect Jordan algebra [Formula: see text] contains a greatest special sympathetic ideal [Formula: see text] and a decomposition into direct sum of ideals about the greatest special sympathetic ideal. Besides, each perfect Jordan algebra [Formula: see text] also contains a solvable ideal [Formula: see text] which is greatest among the solvable ideals [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] and a decomposition into direct sum of subalgebras [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is a sympathetic subalgebra of [Formula: see text], which is similar to the Levi decomposition of Lie algebras. Moreover, [Formula: see text] is sympathetic if and only if [Formula: see text]. What is more, a class of ideals of Jordan algebras such that the quotients are sympathetic Jordan algebras are studied and some vital properties about this kind of ideal are highlighted.

By a von Neumann algebra M we mean a weakly closed, self-adjoint algebra of operators on a Hilbert space which contains I, the identity operator. A factor is a von Neumann algebra whose centre consists of scalar multiples of I.In all that follows ϕ:M → N will be a one to one, *-linear map from the von Neumann factor M onto the von Neumann algebra N such that both ϕ and ϕ−1 preserve commutativity. Our main result states that if M is not of type I2 then where is an isomorphism or an antiisomorphism, c is a non-zero scalar, and λ is a *-linear map from M into ZN, the centre of N.Our interest in this problem was aroused by several recent results. In [1], Choi, Jafarian, and Radjavi proved that if S is the real linear space of n × n matrices over any algebraically closed field, n ≧ 3, and ψ a linear operator on S which preserves commuting pairs of matrices, then either ψ(S) is commutative or there exists a unitary matrix U such thatfor all A in S. They proved an analogous result for the collection of all bounded self-adjoint operators on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space when ψ is one to one. Subsequently, Omladic [7] proved that if ψ:L(X) → L(X) is a bijective linear operator preserving commuting pairs of operators where X is a non-trivial Banach space, thenwhere U is a bounded invertible operator on X and A′ is the adjoint of A.

Gradings on simple Jordan and Lie algebras

The Banach-Stone theorem says, in the language we shall use, that if two commutative C*-algebras are isomorphic, then they are as C*-algebras. In this formulation there are two natural question: whether the theorem holds for noncommutative C*-algebras, and whether it is possible to replace isometrically isomorphic with isomorphic. A complete answer to the first question was given by Kadison in [10], and M. Cambern settled the second in the affirmative in [5]. In Section 3 we show that Cambern's result may be partially extended to noncommutative von Neumann algebras having the property P ([9, 18, 19]). When we have the result of Section 3 that a nearly isometric completely positive map of a von Neumann algebra having property P is close to a * isomorphism between the algebras, we have nearly proved that von Neumann algebras whose unit balls are close in the Hausdorff metric are unitarily equivalent by a unitary close to the identity. The only thing we have to prove then is that if q) is an isomorphism of a v o n Neumann algebra A having property P onto a v o n Neumann algebra B acting on the same Hilbert space, and 4~ satisfies, for some positive k less than one and any x in A,

A synaptic algebra is both a special Jordan algebra and a spectral order-unit normed space satisfying certain natural conditions suggested by the partially ordered Jordan algebra of bounded Hermitian operators on a Hilbert space. The adjective “synaptic”, borrowed from biology, is meant to suggest that such an algebra coherently “ties together” the notions of a Jordan algebra, a spectral order-unit normed space, a convex effect algebra, and an orthomodular lattice.

This paper investigates the effect of structure‐preserving perturbations on the eigenvalues of linearly and nonlinearly structured eigenvalue problems. Particular attention is paid to structures that form Jordan algebras, Lie algebras, and automorphism groups of a scalar product. Bounds and computable expressions for structured eigenvalue condition numbers are derived for these classes of matrices, which include complex symmetric, pseudo‐symmetric, persymmetric, skew‐symmetric, Hamiltonian, symplectic, and orthogonal matrices. In particular we show that under reasonable assumptions on the scalar product, the structured and unstructured eigenvalue condition numbers are equal for structures in Jordan algebras. For Lie algebras, the effect on the condition number of incorporating structure varies greatly with the structure. We identify Lie algebras for which structure does not affect the eigenvalue condition number.

Although symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures (SIC POVMs, or SICs for short) have been constructed in every dimension up to 67, a general existence proof remains elusive. The purpose of this paper is to show that the SIC existence problem is equivalent to three other, on the face of it quite different problems. Although it is still not clear whether these reformulations of the problem will make it more tractable, we believe that the fact that SICs have these connections to other areas of mathematics is of some intrinsic interest. Specifically, we reformulate the SIC problem in terms of (1) Lie groups, (2) Lie algebras and (3) Jordan algebras (the second result being a greatly strengthened version of one previously obtained by Appleby, Flammia and Fuchs). The connection between these three reformulations is non-trivial: It is not easy to demonstrate their equivalence directly, without appealing to their common equivalence to SIC existence. In the course of our analysis we obtain a number of other results which may be of some independent interest.
