Linear stability of noncommutative spectral geometry

We review a gravitational model based on noncommutative geometry and the spectral action principle. The space-time geometry is described by the tensor product of a four-dimensional Riemanian manifold by a discrete noncommutative space consisting of only two points. With a specific choice of the finite dimensional involutive algebra, the noncommutative spectral action leads to the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions minimally coupled to Einstein and Weyl gravity. We present the main mathematical ingredients of this model and discuss their physical implications. We argue that the doubling of the algebra is intimately related to dissipation and the gauge field structure. We then show how this noncommutative spectral geometry model, a purely classical construction, carries implicit in the doubling of the algebra the seeds of quantization. After a short review on the phenomenological consequences of this geometric model as an approach to unification, we discuss some of its cosmological consequences. In particular, we study deviations of the Friedmann equation, propagation of gravitational waves, and investigate whether any of the scalar fields in this model could play the role of the inflaton.

Noncommutative geometric spaces with boundary: Spectral action

We consider aspects of the noncommutative approach to the standard model based on the spectral action principle. We show that as a consequence of the incorporation of the Clifford structures in the formalism, the spectral action contains an extended scalar sector, with respect to the minimal standard model. This may have interesting phenomenological consequences. Some of these new scalar fields carry both weak isospin and color indices. We calculate the new terms in spectral action due to the presence of these fields. Our analysis demonstrates that the fermionic doubling in the noncommutative geometry is not just a presence of spurious degrees of freedom, but it is an interesting and peculiar property of the formalism, which leads to physically valuable conclusions. Some of the new fields do not contribute to the physical fermionic action, but they appear in the bosonic spectral action. Their contributions to the Dirac operator correspond to couplings with the spurious fermions, which are projected out.

The principal object in noncommutative geometry is the spectral triple consisting of an algebra , a Hilbert space and a Dirac operator . Field theories are incorporated in this approach by the spectral action principle, which sets the field theory action to , where f is a real function such that the trace exists and Λ is a cutoff scale. In the low-energy (weak-field) limit, the spectral action reproduces reasonably well the known physics including the standard model. However, not much is known about the spectral action beyond the low-energy approximation. In this paper, after an extensive introduction to spectral triples and spectral actions, we study various expansions of the spectral actions (exemplified by the heat kernel). We derive the convergence criteria. Non commutative geometry and super Yang–Mills theory

We present a model of (modified) gravity on spacetimes with fractal structure based on packing of spheres, which are (Euclidean) variants of the packed swiss cheese cosmology models. As the action functional for gravity we consider the spectral action of noncommutative geometry, and we compute its expansion on a space obtained as an Apollonian packing of three-dimensional spheres inside a four-dimensional ball. Using information from the zeta function of the Dirac operator of the spectral triple, we compute the leading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the spectral action. They consist of a zeta regularization of the divergent sum of the leading terms of the spectral actions of the individual spheres in the packing. This accounts for the contribution of points 1 and 3 in the dimension spectrum (as in the case of a 3-sphere). There is an additional term coming from the residue at the additional point in the real dimension spectrum that corresponds to the packing constant, as well as a series of fluctuations coming from log-periodic oscillations, created by the points of the dimension spectrum that are off the real line. These terms detect the fractality of the residue set of the sphere packing. We show that the presence of fractality influences the shape of the slow-roll potential for inflation, obtained from the spectral action. We also discuss the effect of truncating the fractal structure at a certain scale related to the energy scale in the spectral action.

It is for the most part expected that dark matter is important to clarify the rotation of the galaxy, It has effectively been seen that the non-commutative geometry background can achieve this objective similarly. The objective of this study is to investigate a relationship between non-commutative geometry and certain aspect of dark matter. We are relying on a basic mathematical expression argument that indicates that the appearance of dark matter in galaxies and galaxy clusters with regard to flat rotation curves is similarly a result of non commutative geometry.

Motivated by the construction of spectral manifolds in noncommutative geometry, we introduce a higher degree Heisenberg commutation relation involving the Dirac operator and the Feynman slash of scalar fields. This commutation relation appears in two versions, one sided and two sided. It implies the quantization of the volume. In the one-sided case it implies that the manifold decomposes into a disconnected sum of spheres which will represent quanta of geometry. The two sided version in dimension 4 predicts the two algebras M_2(H) and M_4(C) which are the algebraic constituents of the Standard Model of particle physics. This taken together with the non-commutative algebra of functions allows one to reconstruct, using the spectral action, the Lagrangian of gravity coupled with the Standard Model. We show that any connected Riemannian Spin 4-manifold with quantized volume >4 (in suitable units) appears as an irreducible representation of the two-sided commutation relations in dimension 4 and that these representations give a seductive model of the "particle picture" for a theory of quantum gravity in which both the Einstein geometric standpoint and the Standard Model emerge from Quantum Mechanics. Physical applications of this quantization scheme will follow in a separate publication.

We study general relativity in the framework of non-commutative differential geometry. As a prerequisite we develop the basic notions of non-commutative Riemannian geometry, including analogues of Riemannian metric, curvature and scalar curvature. This enables us to introduce a generalized Einstein-Hilbert action for non-commutative Riemannian spaces. As an example we study a space-time which is the product of a four dimensional manifold by a two-point space, using the tools of non-commutative Riemannian geometry, and derive its generalized Einstein-Hilbert action. In the simplest situation, where the Riemannian metric is taken to be the same on the two copies of the manifold, one obtains a model of a scalar field coupled to Einstein gravity. This field is geometrically interpreted as describing the distance between the two points in the internal space.

This thesis presents various examples of the application of quantum-mechanical methods to the understanding of the structure of space-time. It focuses on noncommutative geometry and the gauge/gravity duality as intermediaries between quantum mechanics and classical geometry. First, we numerically calculate entanglement entropy and mutual information for a massive free scalar field on commutative and noncommutative (fuzzy) spheres. To define a subregion with a well-defined boundary in the noncommutative geometry, we use the symbol map between elements of the noncommutative algebra and functions on the sphere. We show that the UV-divergent part of the entanglement entropy on a fuzzy sphere does not follow an area law. In agreement with holographic predictions, it is extensive for small (but fixed) regions. This is true even in the limit of small noncommutativity. Nonetheless, we find that mutual information (which is UV-finite) is the same in both theories. This suggests that nonlocality at short distances does not affect quantum correlations over large distances in a free field theory. Previous work has shown that a surface embedded in flat ℝ³ can be associated to any three Hermitian matrices. By constructing coherent states corresponding to points in the emergent geometry, we study this emergent surface when the matrices are large. We find that the original matrices determine not only shape of the emergent surface, but also a unique Poisson structure. We prove that commutators of matrix operators correspond to Poisson brackets. Through our construction, we can realize arbitrary noncommutative membranes. Finally, we use the gauge/gravity correspondence to translate the positivity of relative entropy on the boundary into constraints on allowable space-time metrics in the bulk. Using the Einstein equations, we interpret these constraints as energy conditions. For certain three-dimensional bulks, we obtain strict constraints coming from the positivity of relative entropy with a thermal reference state which turn out to be equivalent to a version of the weak energy condition near the boundary. In higher dimensions, we use the canonical energy formalism to obtain similar but weaker constraints.

We consider the Einstein equations for a Bianchi type I geometry, modified by first-order semiclassical quantum corrections. Using reduction techniques developed by Parker and Simon, we simplify these equations, obtaining reduced forms containing only first and second derivatives. We then find analytical solutions for both the vacuum case and for the case of a perfect fluid with a stiff equation of state. In the vacuum case we find that the Kasner solution maintains the same form in both the classical and semiclassical regimes. In the matter-filled case we observe, however, that a qualitatively different behavior emerges in the semiclassical era. We comment on the nature of these differences.

Seven new solutions to the interior static and spherically symmetric Einstein's field equations (EFE) are found and investigated. These new solutions are a generalisation of the quadratic density fall-off profile of the Tolman VII solution. The generalisation involves the addition of anisotropic pressures and electric charge to the density profile. Of these new solutions three are found to obey all the necessary conditions of physical acceptability, including linear stability under radial perturbations, and causality of the speed of pressure waves inside the object. Additionally an equation of state can be found for all the physically viable solutions. The generalised pulsation equation for interior solutions to the EFE that include both electric charge and pressure anisotropy is derived and used to determine the stability of the solutions. However the pulsation equation found is general and can be used for all new solutions that contain these ingredients.

We study a deformation of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms of a smooth manifold. The deformation is based on a general twist. This leads to a differential geometry on a noncommutative algebra of functions whose product is a star product. The class of noncommutative spaces studied is very rich. Non-anticommutative superspaces are also briefly considered. The differential geometry developed is covariant under deformed diffeomorphisms and is coordinate independent. The main target of this work is the construction of Einstein's equations for gravity on noncommutative manifolds.

These notes provide an introduction to the noncommutative matrix geometry which arises within matrix models of Yang-Mills type. Starting from basic examples of compact fuzzy spaces, a general notion of embedded noncommutative spaces (branes) is formulated, and their effective Riemannian geometry is elaborated. This class of configurations is preserved under small deformations, and is therefore appropriate for matrix models. A realization of generic 4-dimensional geometries is sketched, and the relation with spectral geometry and with noncommutative gauge theory is explained. In a second part, dynamical aspects of these matrix geometries are considered. The one-loop effective action for the maximally supersymmetric IKKT or IIB matrix model is discussed, which is well-behaved on 4-dimensional branes.

We address the treatment of gauge theories within the framework that is formed from combining the machinery of noncommutative symplectic geometry, as introduced by Kontsevich, with Costello’s approach to effective gauge field theories within the Batalin–Vilkovisky formalism; discussing the problem of quantization in this context; and identifying the relevant cohomology theory controlling this process. We explain how the resulting noncommutative effective gauge field theories produce classes in a compactification of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, when we pass to the large length scale limit. Within this setting, the large N correspondence of ’t Hooft—describing a connection between open string theories and gauge theories—appears as a relation between the noncommutative and commutative geometries. We use this correspondence to investigate and ultimately quantize a noncommutative analogue of Chern–Simons theory.
