Abstract

Abstract In today’s fast-paced technological land-scape, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) has emerged as a vital manufacturing technique for creating intricate shapes in hard materials. However, the process is often expensive due to its dependence on extensive testing and experimental data. To tackle this issue, developing a predictive system for EDM performance, especially in smart Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) that incorporates electrode vibration and real-time monitoring, is crucial. EDMNet incorporates Machine Learning (ML) into the EDM process to optimize performance in real-time. We assessed 12 ML regression models, including Deep Neural Networks (DNN), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and various ensemble methods, using four key performance metrics: Mean Squared Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and R-squared (R2). This assessment offers a comparative analysis of the different models’ strengths and weaknesses, aiding in the selection of the most effective and precise method for performance prediction. The application of ML in EDM marks a significant leap forward in contemporary manufacturing, leading to notable enhancements in efficiency, accuracy, and cost savings. Our findings highlight a transformative potential, setting the stage for more intelligent and optimized EDM processes in advanced manufacturing settings.
