Managing 3PL relationships

Third party logistics (3PL) service providers play a growing responsibility in the management of supply chain. The global and competitive business environment of 3PLs has recognized the significance of a speedy and proficient service towards the customers in the past few decades. Particularly in warehousing, distribution, and transportation services, a number of customers anticipate 3PLs to improve lead times, fill rates, inventory levels, etc. Therefore, the 3PLs are under demands to convene a range of service necessities of customers in an active and uncertain business environment. As a consequence of the dynamic environment in which supply chain must operate, 3PLs should sustain an effective distribution system of high performance and must make a sequence of inter-related decisions over time for their distribution networks. Warehouses play an important role in sustaining the continual flow of goods and materials between the manufacturer and customers. The performance of the 3PL supply chain network can be effortlessly enhanced by a balanced allocation of customers to warehouses. In this paper, the authors develop a genetic algorithm and a particle-swarm-optimisation algorithm for solving the balanced allocation problem and the results are encouraging.

PurposeTo carry out a comprehensive survey on 3PL practices in India and to establish the impact of usage of third party logistics services on business results.Design/methodology/approachBegins by analysing the studies carried out on 3PL practices and establishing a research framework. The input variables to the research framework depict the organization‐specific characteristics, such as the extent of usage of 3PL services, the reasons for outsourcing and the impact of the usage of 3PL services. The output function of future usage of 3PL services is influenced by the three input variables. Data collected through survey questionnaire on the input and output variables are used to establish impact of usage of 3PL services on business performance through statistical analysis.FindingsThe usage of 3PL services reveals positive and significant impact on business performance though 3PL practices are still at a nascent stage in India. Additionally, results clearly indicate that significant increase in outsourcing has been planned across all activities of the logistics function in the next 2‐5 years.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research work should focus on managing 3PL relationships; selection and contract management of 3PL service providers for building collaborative supply chain partnerships; and identifying critical success factors for 3PL implementation and establishing performance measures for long‐term 3PL relationships.Practical implicationsDetailed study to motivate supply chain managers to outsource and use 3PL services to focus on the core business, drive logistics cost reduction, and improve supply chain efficiency. These indicators should also help the 3PL service providers plan the depth and scope of their service offerings to user organizations in India.Originality/valueThe paper contributes to the current 3PL and supply chain practices and the emerging trends in 3PL services for achieving improved business results and supply chain efficiencies.

Due to globalization and rising competition, supply chain services (3PL) are crucial in managing logistics, decreasing operational and non-operational expenses, and managing client and vendor relationships. Suppliers who offer 3PL services aim to improve sustainability and foresee client demand. Thus, this study examines 3PL service provider performance characteristics. Consequently, this study aims to Investigate the elements that affect the performance of third-party logistics (3PL) service providers. The study employed a descriptive research approach to evaluate how warehouse efficiency, transport efficiency, logistics competence, and Disruptive technology efficiency impact the success of 3PL service providers. A questionnaire survey of 126 clients was conducted using quota sampling, and the hypothesis link between the constructs was statistically analyzed. The empirical findings demonstrate warehouse efficiency, packaging efficiency, transportation efficiency, and order fulfillment efficiency. Disruptive technology efficiency and logistics integration systems favorably impact the performance indicators of 3PL service providers. The findings suggest that Disruptive Technology is the most prevalent domain factor. As a result, service providers should develop an appropriate strategy to improve service quality by encouraging sustainable disruptive technology tools and improving operational accuracy. This study can improve production and supplier performance through cost reduction, logistics improvements, and inventory management. This study will help policymakers and logistics managers create an effective framework for selecting third-party logistics providers.

Selection of third-party logistics in supply chain finance under probabilistic complex hesitant fuzzy sets and distance measures

Service literature indicates that both service failure and service recovery have a strong impact on the business relationships between service providers and their customers. The purpose of this research is twofold: to explore and analyze the most common service failures and implemented recovery strategies in Turkish third party logistics service industry and examine their impact on business relationships. Critical Incident Technique (CIT) was used. Thus, information on critical incidents were collected from both third party logistics service providers (3PLs) and their customers, failures and recovery strategies were categorized and the impact of service failures and recovery strategies on future relationships between customers and 3PLs examined. The findings indicate that service failures are most frequently encountered in customer services and port operations and that symbolic service recovery is the most common recovery strategy implemented by third party logistics service providers. The findings also show that third party logistics service providers and carriers are the most common sources of failure in third party logistics services.

The growing complexity of global supply chains and the rising demand for efficient logistics solutions have made Third-Party Logistics (3PL) services a strategic necessity for modern businesses. This study explores the impacts of 3PL services on a logistics company, focusing on four key dimensions: operational efficiency, cost reduction, service quality, and scalability. By collecting and analyzing primary data from internal stakeholders, the research evaluates how outsourcing logistics functions—such as transportation, warehousing, and inventory management—affects overall organizational performance. Statistical tools such as Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and Regression Analysis are employed to interpret relationships between key performance indicators and 3PL outcomes. The findings reveal that 3PL services significantly enhance operational flexibility and cost-effectiveness, while also improving delivery performance and customer satisfaction. However, the study also identifies certain challenges, such as coordination issues and risks associated with service dependency. The insights generated aim to guide logistics firms in making informed decisions regarding 3PL adoption, ensuring strategic alignment with organizational goals. This study examines the impact of green practise (GP) antecedents—green halal supplier selection (SUPP), green halal manufacturing (GHM), and green halal logistics (GHL)—on supply chain performance in the context of halal food small and medium enterprises (SME). The study examined the relationship between GP antecedent and supply chain performance using data from 115 halal SME. To test the proposed hypothesis, this study employed quantitative methodology with a purposive sampling technique. In addition, multiple regression employing structural equation modeling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) is used to examine the collected data while maximising the variance captured. This study found that GHL among supply chain partners has a greater impact on the performance of halal supply chains. In addition, empirical data validate the significance of SUPP and GHM in enhancing the performance of the halal supply chain in the context of halal food SME. Incorporating the GP as a strategic approach to boost supply chain performance while ensuring the halal credibility of the product, the findings of this study will assist halal small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in refining their supply chain activity. This is the first study to examine the role of strategic green firm resources in enhancing supply chain performance.

This study examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing supply chain performance through improved supplier collaboration in West Africa. Grounded in transaction cost economics (TCE), resource-based view (RBV), and cybernetic theory, the research explores how AI-driven technologies reduce transaction costs, optimize strategic resources, and enhance adaptability through real-time data sharing. A quantitative research approach was employed, utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze data from 250 suppliers across multiple industries. The findings establish significant relationships between AI-driven communication tools, automation in collaboration processes, real-time data-sharing capabilities, and supplier network integration, all of which positively impact supply chain performance. Among these factors, supplier network integration exhibited the strongest influence on performance outcomes, highlighting the critical role of AI in fostering interconnected supply chains. The study recommends wider adoption of AI tools, automation, and real-time data-sharing mechanisms to enhance supplier interactions and supply chain agility. These insights provide practical implications for supply chain practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders seeking to leverage AI for greater efficiency and resilience in supply chain operations.

A Strategic Analysis of the Use of Third Party Logistics Providers (3PLs) in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Industry: A Systematic Review of Literature

Third-party logistics (3PLs) service providers have become an extremely important part of any organisation's supply chain. They are required in almost all business operations right from supplying the raw material to the manufacturing plants to delivering finished products to the end customers and hence appropriate selection of these service providers will not only make the organisation competitive but also contribute significantly to profitability. Present research focuses on first identifying criteria or enablers, which can be used to evaluate 3PLs. These enablers are further utilised by a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making technique of data envelopment analytic hierarchy process (DEAHP) to select the most appropriate 3PL service provider amongst choices available. With the help of exhaustive literature review, 14 major selection criteria were identified. Uniqueness of the research lies in the application of this hybrid technique to the selection of 3PLs for a manufacturing company.

Sector Logistics plays an important role in maintaining the smoothness and efficiency of national and global supply chains, especially for third-party logistics ( 3PL ) service providers who face demands for reliability and speed of service amidst global competition. The complexity of the logistics process creates the need for a structured and measurable performance evaluation model. This study aims to apply the Supply Chain Operations Reference ( SCOR ) model in identifying and prioritizing key performance indicators ( KPI ) in a 3PL company . The method used involves distributing questionnaires to decision makers in operational and managerial fields. The weights of SCOR performance attributes including reliability, responsiveness, flexibility, cost measures, and asset management efficiency are calculated using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process ( FAHP ) method. Furthermore, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution ( TOPSIS ) is used to determine KPI priorities at PT.X. The results of the study show that there are 17 indicators to measure the performance of the freight forwarding sector with the largest weight being operator reliability (0.251) on the reliability attribute, the number of on-time deliveries (0.694) on the responsiveness attribute, load flexibility (0.317) on the flexibility attribute, shipping costs per km (0.379) on the cost attribute and cash-to-cash cycle time (0.479) on the asset management attribute. The SCOR model has proven effective as an initial framework in measuring the performance of 3PL logistics service providers, because it is able to integrate various aspects of performance systematically and quantitatively.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to analyse the extent of the integration between manufacturers and third party logistics (TPL) providers at present and how the integration is expected to develop in the near future. The focus is on studying what tasks are part of the cooperation, what information and communications technology (ICT) tools are used for support, and what types of services are supplied and are expected to be supplied by TPL providers in the future.Design/methodology/approachA multiple case study of seven manufacturers and TPL providers is conducted. As the basis for the study a literature review is presented focusing on supply chain management and TPL provider integration as well as operationalisation of the integration concept. A framework is chosen for developing a detailed interview guide.FindingsCooperation is primarily found in sub‐processes of three out of the eight business processes studied. Further integration in the same processes is expected, based on ICT tools and with a focus on cost. ICT competences are primarily seen as a qualifier not a differentiator. Because the future TPL industry is expected to be characterised by more standardised services, more segmented markets for the various services and more intense competition, the manufacturers do not expect increased dependence on the TPL providers.Research limitations/implicationsManagerial and behavioural components are not part of this study and their effect on integration will require further investigation.Originality/valueFrom a supply chain management perspective, the study sheds light on a rarely explored area concerning the integration between manufacturers and TPL providers and its future development.

Carrier-mode logistics optimization of inbound supply chains for electronics manufacturing

During the process of enterprise management, those chemical enterprises usually adopt outsourcing, as they hand over the logistical work to the third party. Here, we call the third part the “logistics service provider”. In this paper, Chemical Enterprise A is set as an example to study the application of the optimizing selection for the third party logistics service provider, as well as its improvement of aggregate cost method. This paper is aimed at theory, practicality and operability, and hoping to choose the provider which can guarantee the cost is smallest by introducing the original provider model. Among all the aspects, this paper is persuasive. Meanwhile, due to the instability of the relevant data which are collected, the factors impacting upon the total cost are uncertain, thus their credibility is affected. Later, according to the actual demand of the logistics service provider as well as the Benefit-Cost Ratio in aggregate cost method, the qualitative method and the quantitative method are combined with each other, and then the cost can be reduced through Analytic Hierarchy Process. Moreover, the factors which are irrelevant to cost selection are reasonably transformed into the cost adjustment proportion, and an improved provider selection model is established. At last, by introducing the specific case of the third party logistics service provider of Chemical Enterprise A, the effectiveness in practical application of improving the provider selection model can be verified.
