Maps between topological groups that are homotopic to homomorphisms

Let G be a reflexive topological group, and Gits group of characters, endowed with the compact open topology. We prove that the evaluation mapping from Gx G into the torus T is continuous if and only if G is locally compact. This is an analogue of a well-known theorem of Arens on admissible topologies on C(X) . DEFINITIONS AND REMARKS Let X, Y be topological spaces, and let Z be a subset of yX . A topology on Z is said to be admissible if the evaluation mapping from the product Z x X into Y, defined by w(f, x) = f(x), is continuous. Let (S, V) = {f E Z; f(S) C V}. The family {(S, V)}, where S runs over the collection of all compact subsets of X and V runs over a basis of open sets in Y, is a subbase for the compact open topology on Z. An admissible topology on Z must be finer than the compact open topology [8]. A result of Arens states that the existence of a coarsest admissible topology for the class of real continuous functions on a completely regular space X is equivalent to X being locally compact [1]. In this paper we are interested in reflexive topological groups. Answering in the negative a question of Megrelishvili [7], we will see that the evaluation map for those groups need not be continuous. In fact, as specified in the theorem, the continuity of the evaluation characterizes locally compact Hausdorff abelian groups among reflexive groups. We prove this result by means of convergence spaces. For an account of theory of convergence spaces the reader is referred to [3, 4]. We only give here needed definitions. Let G be a Hausdorff topological abelian group, and let FG be the set of all continuous homomorphisms from G into the unidimensional torus T. If addition is defined pointwise in FG, it becomes an abelian group. Let (X, =) be a topological space. A subset A of X is called pre-open if A ⊆ Int(Cl(A)). Let P O(X) denote the family of all pre-open sets in X. In general, P O(X) does not form a topology on X. Furthermore, in topological vector spaces, it is not always true that P O(L) forms a topology on L where L is a topological vector space. In this note, we prove that the class of strongly preirresolute topological vector spaces is that subclass of topological vector spaces in which P O(L) forms a topology and thereby we see that all proved results in [5] concerning strongly preirresolute topological vector spaces are obvious.

Long colimits of topological groups II: Free groups and vector spaces

We study a functorial dependence between maps , where is a -space with continuous action of the group , and maps , where is taken with the compact open topology. The functor preserves the properties of being one-to-one, of being continuous, of being a topological embedding and, in the case of a compact group, of being a topological embedding with a closed image. For fixed , , and , the functor is a topological embedding of into . (The topology is compact-open.) If is a topological vector space, then is a monomorphism. If is locally compact, then there is a continuous action of on and is equivariant for any . If is a locally convex space, then there exists a continuous monomorphism of into the group of all topological linear transformations of the locally convex space . For a locally compact group every completely regular -space can be embedded in a topologically equivariant way in the locally convex space under the natural action of the group of all topological linear transformations. (This result was recently obtained by de Vries by means of a different construction.) If is compact, then the embedding can be made to have a closed image.

1. In view of the recent work on topological groups it is natural to consider the situation which arises when such groups act as transformation groups on various types of spaces. Such a study is begun here from the point of view of almost periodic transformation groups, the definition of which is suggested by von Neumann's paper on almost periodic functions in a group.t Compact topological transformation groups are a special case of almost periodic transformation groups, at least for a rather wide class of spaces. The paper concerns itself chiefly with the nature of the minimal closed invariant sets of such groups. There are some results for general spaces but the main results are for Euclidean spaces and more particularly for threedimensional Euclidean spaces. One of the most interesting theorems states that if a compact one-dimensional group acts on three-space in such a way that its orbits are uniformly bounded in diameter, then every point of the space is fixed under the group, so that if such a group is to act in a nontrivial manner the diameters of its orbits must be unbounded. Under some restrictions a similar theorem is proved for one-parameter almost periodic groups. Furthermore it is shown that for this latter class of groups, many of the orbits must actually be simple closed curves if they have one-dimensional closures. 2. The group considered here will be denoted by G. It will be subjected to various conditions as the occasion demands but it will always be Abelian. In case it is the group of real numbers, it will be spoken of as a one-parameter group; in case it is the real numbers reduced modulo one, it will be spoken of as the circle group. The space on which the group acts will be denoted by R. It will be specialized in various ways, but in any case it will always be a locally compact metric space. If x and y are two points of R, the distance between them will be denoted by d(x, y).

We study Pontryagin reflexivity in the class of precompact topological Abelian groups. We find reflexive groups among precompact not pseudocompact and among pseudocompact not compact groups. Making use of Martin's axiom we give an example of a reflexive countably compact not compact Abelian group. We also prove that every pseudocompact Abelian group is a quotient of a reflexive pseudocompact group with respect to a closed reflexive pseudocompact subgroup.

This chapter pursues three lines of investigation in the subject of functional analysis—one involving smooth functions and distributions, one involving fixed-point theorems, and one involving spectral theory.Section 1 introduces topological vector spaces. These are real or complex vector spaces with a Hausdorff topology in which addition and scalar multiplication are continuous. Examples include normed linear spaces, spaces given by a separating family of countably many seminorms, and weak and weak-star topologies in the context of Banach spaces. Various general properties of topological vector spaces are proved, and it is proved that the quotient of a topological vector space by a closed vector subspace is Hausdorff and is therefore a topological vector space.Section 2 introduces a topology on the space C∞(U) of smooth functions on an open subset of ℝN. The support of a continuous linear functional on C∞(U) is defined and shown to be a compact subset of U. Accordingly, the continuous linear functionals are called distributions of compact support.Section 3 studies weak and weak-star topologies in more detail. The main result is Alaoglu’s Theorem, which says that the closed unit ball in the weak-star topology on the dual of a normed linear space is compact. In an earlier chapter a preliminary form of this theorem was used to construct elements in a dual space as limits of weak-star convergent subsequences.Section 4 follows Alaoglu’s Theorem along a particular path, giving what amounts to a first example of the Gelfand theory of Banach algebras. The relevant theorem, known as the Stone Representation Theorem, says that conjugate-closed uniformly closed subalgebras containing the constants in B(S) are isomorphic via a norm-preserving algebra isomorphism to the space of all continuous functions on some compact Hausdorff space. The compact space in question is the space of multiplicative linear functionals on the subalgebra, and the proof of compactness uses Alaoglu’s Theorem.Sections 5–6 return to the lines of study toward distributions and fixed-point theorems. Section 5 studies the relationship between convexity and the existence of separating linear functionals. The main theorem makes use of the Hahn-Banach Theorem. Section 6 introduces locally convex topological vector spaces. Application of the basic separation theorem from the previous section shows the existence of many continuous linear functionals on such a space.Section 7 specializes to the line of study via smooth functions and distributions. The topic is the introduction of a certain locally convex topology on the space C ∞com (U) of smooth functions of compact support on U. This is best characterized by a universal mapping property introduced in the section.Sections 8–9 pursue locally convex spaces along the other line of study that split off in Section 5. Section 8 gives the Krein-Milman Theorem, which asserts the existence of a supply of extreme points for any nonempty compact convex set in a locally convex topological vector space. Section 9 relates compact convex sets to the subject of fixed-point theorems.Section 10 takes up the abstract theory of Banach algebras, with particular attention to commutative C* algebras with identity. Three examples are the algebras characterized by the Stone Representation Theorem, any L∞ space, and any adjoint-closed commutative Banach algebra consisting of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space and containing the identity.Section 11 continues the investigation of the last of the examples in the previous section and derives the Spectral Theorem for bounded self-adjoint operators and certain related families of operators. Powerful applications follow from a functional calculus implied by the Spectral Theorem. Let A be a lattice-ordered group. Gusic showed that A can be equipped with a C-topology which makes A into a topological group. We give a generalization of Gusic’s theorem, and reveal the very nature of a “C-group” of Gusic in this paper. Moreover, we show that the C-topological groups are topological lattice-ordered groups, and prove that every archimedean lattice-ordered vector space is a T2 topological lattice-ordered vector space under the C-topology. An easy example shows that a C-group need not be T2. A further example demonstrates that a T2 topological archimedean lattice-ordered group need not be C-archimedean, either.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of almost \(s-\)topological vector spaces and present some examples and counterexamples of almost \(s-\)topological vector spaces. Some general properties of almost \(s-\)topological vector spaces are investigated.

First, we discuss the behavior of boundedness in uniform spaces with respect to subspaces, projective limits, and suprema in relation to precompactness. A special uniformly isomorphic embedding of un arbitrary uniform space in a bounded uniform space is presented and examined in 2.6. Hejcman’s characterization (by B-conservativity) of uniform spaces in which boundedness can be tested by a single pseudometric is proved in a new way, see 3.13, using a version 3.1 of the metrization lemma. We comment briefly on boundedness in topological vector spaces. In topological groups we investigate a hierarchy of partly new notions of boundedness, strongly interrelated among themselves, and exhibit various situations in which certain of these notions coincide. Boundedness respecting subspaces of a uniform space prove useful. Many examples illustrate and complement the general theory, see, e.g., Example 6.4.

As I noted in Sect.6.7, historically one source of the uniform measure concept had been the study of convolution of measures on topological vector spaces and on topological groups. In this chapter I explore the connection between uniform measures and convolution in a fairly general setting that includes convolution on topological groups as a special case.

In this paper the structure of all open semigroups in any compact topological group is determined. We can then extend this result to a classification of the angular semigroups of any abelian topological group H which contains a compact open subgroup K. Coupling this with the results for Euclidean n-space, we obtain an essentially complete description of the angular semigroups of an arbitrary locally compact group. For compact groups, the result is remarkably simple.
