Abstract

The rise of modern medicine and the extension of its explanatory powers over so many areas of human experience coincided with the increasing cultural authority of imaginative literature as a record and exploration of everyday life. Both literature and medicine addressed central questions about moral, social, and physical distress and drew from the same cultural presuppositions that they in turn confirmed or helped to shape. Although the relations between doctors and patients were rarely a subject for fictional treatment, the discourse of medicine and the methodology of medical science entered into imaginative treatments of psychic distress and of the social problems arising from urbanization and an industrial economy. Literary scholarship on the relations between medicine and literature has flourished since the 1980s, as a result of the wide acceptance of interdisciplinary research and of the influence of Michel Foucault's work on the disciplinary force of medical discourse.
