Abstract

The surface charge of biomaterials is a crucial parameter in their interaction with their environment. Whether they interact with solid surfaces, liquids, or even gasses. When we talk about surface charge, we mean the functional groups of biomaterials that can either be ionized under certain environmental stimuli or are permanently ionized. These functional groups determine the way a biomaterial interacts with its biological environment, whether in adhering to solid surfaces, initiating bio reactions and biological cascades, killing microorganisms, disrupting cellular metabolism, etc. In this chapter, the influence of the type, nature, and density of biomaterials' surface functional groups on these interactions, as well as their potential role in biomedical applications, is highlighted through the analytical eyes of electrochemical methods, namely potentiometric titrations and ζ-potential, and methods to describe the solid-liquid interactions of biomaterials at the solid-liquid interface, namely quartz crystal microbalance, ζ-potential, and surface plasmon resonance.
