Foundations and methods for Knowledge Organization in European iSchools courses

Drawing on large‐scale comparative surveys across nine sociopolitical contexts, we address the question when and why ethno‐religious and city or national identities of European‐born Muslims are in conflict. We argue that the sociopolitical context makes the difference between identity compatibility or conflict and that conflict arises from perceived discrimination and related negative feelings towards the national majority. Using multigroup structural equation modelling, we examine how Turkish and Moroccan Muslims in five European cities combine their civic membership of the city and country of residence—as common identities shared with the national majority—with distinct ethnic and religious identities. In all sociopolitical contexts, participants combined significant city and national identities with strong ethnic and religious identifications. Yet, identification patterns varied between contexts from conflict (negatively correlated minority and civic identities) over compartmentalization (zero correlations) to compatibility (positive correlations). Muslims who perceived more personal discrimination were more committed to their ethnic and religious identities while simultaneously dis‐identifying from their country and city. Across cities, discrimination experiences and negative majority‐group evaluations explained away identity conflict.

Crop–pollinator interactions are vital for sustaining global food production, yet they face growing challenges from climate change. While the role of pollinators, particularly honeybees, in supporting crop yields is widely recognized, there is limited research on how these interactions might evolve under changing climatic conditions in North America. This study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by evaluating potential shifts in honeybee–crop interactions by 2070 under the SSP585 climate change scenario. The analysis identifies regions that are vulnerable to losing pollination services and those likely to experience enhanced interactions. Using species distribution models (SDMs), habitat suitability maps were developed for the western honeybee (Apis mellifera) and 23 pollinator-dependent crops under both current and future climate conditions. Co-occurrence probability maps were generated by integrating these data, enabling a detailed analysis of how interactions are likely to change across North America. The results indicate significant shifts in honeybee–crop interactions due to climate change. Northern regions, such as Canada, are expected to see increased interactions, driven by improved habitat suitability at higher latitudes. In contrast, southern and eastern areas, including parts of Mexico and the USA, are projected to experience declines, leaving these regions more susceptible to the loss of critical pollination services. These findings highlight the uneven effects of climate change on pollination services across North America. While northern areas may benefit from improved conditions, the anticipated declines in the south and east emphasize the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts and adaptive management strategies. Safeguarding pollination networks and ensuring agricultural sustainability will be crucial to mitigating these challenges and maintaining food security in the face of climate change.

Dynamics and Control of Machines

While anti-liberal legal theorist Carl Schmitt has long been considered by Europeans to be one of this century's most significant political philosophers, recent challenges to the fundamental values of liberal democracies have made Schmitt's writings an unavoidable subject of debate in North America as well. In an effort to advance our understanding not only of Schmitt but of current problems of liberal democracy, David Dyzenhaus presents translations of classic German essays on Schmitt alongside more recent writings by distinguished political theorists and jurists. Neither a defence of nor an attack on Schmitt, Law as Politics offers the first balanced response to his powerful critique of liberalism. One of the major players in the 1920s debates, an outspoken critic of the Versailles Treaty and the Weimar Constitution, and a member of the Nazi party who provided juridical respectability to Hitler's policies, Schmitt contended that people are a polity only to the extent that they share common enemies. He saw the liberal notion of a peaceful world of universal citizens as a sheer impossibility and attributed the problems of Weimar to liberalism and its inability to cope with pluralism and political conflict. In the decade since his death, Schmitt's writings have been taken up by both the right and the left and scholars differ greatly in their evaluation of Schmitt's ideas.Law as Politics thematically organizes in one volume the varying engagements and confrontations with Schmitt's work and allows scholars to acknowledge-and therefore be in a better position to negotiate-an important paradox inscribed in the very nature of liberal democracy. Law as Politics will interest political philosophers, legal theorists, historians, and anyone interested in Schmitt's relevance to current discussions of liberalism. South Sudan became independent from Sudan in 2011 after a long history of ethnic and political conflict. Despite being rich in oil resources, the country continues to be caught in turmoil and violence fueled by ethnic strife, particularly between the Dinka group led by President Kiir and the Nuer group led by former Vice President Machar. Peace agreements signed in 2015 and 2018 failed to stop the violence. This has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and millions of refugees. The UN's implementation of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) faces various financial, logistical, and immature understanding of the peace process. Regardless of international efforts, the situation in South Sudan remains fragile, and R2P implementation requires a more comprehensive and adaptive strategy. Therefore, the author seeks to analyze the implementation of R2P in the South Sudan conflict by considering the concept of international organization and Responsibility to Protect (R2P). The author employs a qualitative research method with a descriptive and analytical approach to this article.

Climate change enhances the propagation from meteorological to lake drought

Climate change poses a fundamental threat to humanity, and thus solutions for both mitigation and adaptation strategies are becoming increasingly necessary. Biochar can offer a range of environmental services, such as reclamation of degraded land, improvement of soil fertility and carbon sequestration. However, it also raises questions, regarding sustainable feedstock provision, biomass pyrolysis, and soil amendment. These questions, among various others, are addressed in this state-of-the-art compendium. Covering a broad geographical range, with regional assessments from North America, Europe, the Near East, and Southeast Asia, this interdisciplinary volume focuses on the entire biochar supply chain, from the availability and economics of biomass resources, to pyrolysis, and ultimately to the impacts on soil properties. The combination of theory with practical examples makes this a valuable book for researchers, policymakers, and graduate students alike, in fields such as soil science, sustainable development, climate change mitigation, biomass and bioenergy, forestry, and environmental engineering.
