Modal Logic-Based Policy Management for Distributed Networked Systems and Application

Computer Network has increased and extended dramatically in size and complexity during the passed years. In a typical computer network, there are many nodes, which different from various manufacturers and device types, distributed in different physical position where network device needed. More complex network architecture more faced difficult in network management and control. As faults are inevitable, fast detection, position, identification, isolation and recovery are key fields in network management. In this paper, based on deeply study of the current Network Management System, GIS technology and multi years network management application development, an new network management model, i.e., GIS based Network Management System, is proposed and implemented. The new model can provide object-oriented network utilities management methods, implement quick network fault position on the electronic geography map, and give new useful tools for network fault management, make the current network more robust and reliable.

Focused interfaces for end-user network management

As SDN technology is becoming popular in the field of computer networks management, the need for evolvable SDN-based network management systems arises. SDN facilitates introducing abstractions to the network through programmability and control separation. In this paper, we propose an abstraction in the SDN management layer through adopting a concept of separation of network concerns. We present a management framework, termed NWManager, that provides an abstraction to the network administrator through policies based on network management functions, like behaviour analysis and monitoring, quality of service preservation and security. And based on network concerns as follows, application, communication, resources concern and common concern representing the area of intersection between basic concerns. NWManager provides various network management functions in one system. Our conducted network simulation scenario by mininet demonstrates that this abstraction and separation of concerns in management layer facilitates and enhances the management of the network. As well, it extends the network control parameters provided to the network administrator.

The electric power transmission network management is changing from decentralized to province-centralized mode to adapt to the development trend of power grid. For the current hierarchical management situation of transmission system, the paper mainly studies the centralized mode. Considering the difficulty of transform, security, the demand of bandwidth and augmentability factors, the paper proposes a hierarchical province-centralized mode based on Resource pool and states its architecture, realization methods and deployment mode of Network Manager System in Cloud, realizing the unified management, configuration and data sharing of the whole province. Deploying the network management system in the Clout is taking full use of the resource sharing, efficient management and on-demand resource of the Cloud to realize the intensification, promoting the scheduling intensive management level of Information and transmission. Introduction For a long time, the layered, graded, zoned management mode of electric power communication networks makes the network management system built and maintained by the way of multi-level scheduling mechanism. In order to fulfill the development trend of power grid, power transmission network management should be developed from the provinces and cities separated pattern to the province-centralized mode to realize unified management, unified configuration and sharing of the communication network data within province and achieve the purpose of concentrate and highly active management, reasonable resource-configuration and optimizing the structure of the network resources. Deploying the communication network management centrally is an effective way to enhance the level of intensive management, which, whereas, will cause the load that systems deal with increase sharply. However, Cloud computing technology integrates resources into form Cloud in order to get higher utilization of computing and storage, having a strong computing power and storage capacity. With the development of Cloud construction, deploying communication network management in the pool can improve data reliability and security. This paper puts forward a hierarchical province-centralized mode based on Cloud by researching on concentrated-model of Transmission Network Management, and describes the model in detail. As an important guarantee of power grid security, stability and economic running, communication network management system is the important technology means of the communication network management and maintenance. The authors Published by Atlantis Press 596 Communication network management system At present, the general transmission network management system is divided into Element Management System(EMS), Subnet Management System(SNMS) and Network Management (NMS) in terms of the management level. EMS is based on the device manager and realizes the management of safety, configuration, performance and alarm for specific equipment; SNMS can divide the network elements into various subnets, not only manage the elements equipments but also the topological relation between them. NMS is a higher level than the SNMS and manage multiple SNMS systems at the same time through network. It configures the router for each business level, and also shows the network elements’ circumstances of each time slot and the business relationships at all levels in details. The relationship of different level network management system is showed as the figure 1.

CORBA and mobile agents are two popular network management technologies. This research investigates these two technologies and some existing integrated approaches thoroughly. Based on this investigation, a novel network management model is proposed, which provides a comprehensive, efficient approach to network management, by integrating CORBA and mobile agents technologies into a unified model and pertaining the advantages of each of the technologies. The result of the experiment showed that the performance of network management can be significantly improved.

Wireless Sensor networks are usually designed in an ad hoc manner and often consider some simple management methods. As the sensor networks become more and more complex, it will be difficult to maintain the normal network operations and the completion of user's task will not be guaranteed efficiently if there are no effective management methods. Wireless sensor network is an application-specific system, so its management not only includes traditional network management functions, but has risen to the level of system management. In this paper, we use policy-based management to integrate system management and network management and propose an integrated sensor network management architecture - PFMA (Policy-based Feedback Management Architecture). The overall performance of sensor networks has been effectively improved through PFMA.

The integration of telecom energy systems within today's evolving definition of network management systems (NMSs) is discussed, emphasizing the viewpoint of the various generic network management centers (NMCs) in an attempt to determine where telecom energy systems fit into NMSs and the telecommunications management network (TMN). As the levels of key competent network support system (NSS) personnel continue to dwindle, companies are being forced to install mechanized systems to meet today's required performance levels of per capita personnel effectiveness. The author categorizes the evolving staffing levels of NSS personnel, identifies the specialized needs of each user station type, and correlates that information with the design requirements of the evolving mechanized network management systems.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

It is well understood that the increasing importance of open distributed systems and the growing number of services that utilise them has given rise to the need for effective distributed systems management [190]. Furthermore, it has also become increasingly difficult to build management systems that can cope with the increasing size and complexity of current open distributed systems [192, 196]. Recently, a number of distributed object-based computing environments, such as the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) [167] and the Telecommunication Intelligent Network Architecture (TINA) [152], have been developed that aim to support interoperability between domains in large open distributed systems, where components may appear and disappear dynamically at run-time. As a direct result of the interoperability promoted by such architectures, the complexity of security and management policies has increased greatly due in part to the requirement to support both mutual transparency and individual autonomy between domains [18], and also because of the necessity to cope with the coexistence of multiple, potentially inconsistent, security and management policies. In this thesis, an approach to the modelling of policy and a formal temporal logic based specification of a policy language has been developed that are suitable for supporting the requirements of large open distributed systems. Use of both the concepts defined in the policy model and a formal policy language has enabled the precise specification of what constitutes conflict in policy-based management systems. Furthermore, the development of methods and algorithms that support the systematic dynamic detection and resolution of policy-based conflicts in large open distributed environments have been defined.

Introducing a simulation tool for WirelessHART networks

A regulatory effort is expected to be undertaken in the next years in order to foster the transition towards “smart grids”. In this view, the ancillary services market framework needs to change in order to cater for the possible contribution coming from distribution networks. Recently, the Italian Authority for Electricity, Gas and Water proposed three new market models aiming at exploiting the contribution of the resources connected to distribution networks for the ancillary services provision to the bulk grid. In this context, storage systems could enhance significantly the availability of ancillary services meanwhile allowing a better management of distribution networks. This paper aims at investigating the possible contribution of storage units in the ancillary services provision by distribution networks.

Bandwidth requirements in the tactical satellite communications (SATCOM) environment are driven by widely varying battle dynamics. Problematically, however, SATCOM resource management is static, with capacity provisioning based on anticipated average peak demand. To overcome the inevitable shortfalls inherent in this approach, two capabilities are required. The first is integrated situational awareness (SA) of SATCOM network status, including views of disruptions and associated impacts. The second required capability is the ability to allocate bandwidth in near real-time to better meet the urgent needs of Warfighters. This paper describes management architectures in which policy-based automation is applied to the dynamic bandwidth allocation problem for tactical satellite networks using policies derived from both current and near-term historical SA data. Resource management, within the broader policy-based network management, needs to track satellite resource pool capacity, current utilization, and allocation based on instantaneous demand. Dynamic allocation of bulk capacity and admission of more granular per data flow level traffic needs to be governed by policies comprising location, time, organization, associated priorities, etc. Simulated communications traffic resulting from realistic operational scenarios is used to analyze dynamic policy-based resource management. Also presented is a design approach and test bed for live demonstrations of policy-based resource management of Internet Protocol (IP) flows over SPACEWAY, a commercial Ka-band multiple-beam packet processing satellite system, interconnected with a terrestrial IP network.

In today's Internet, Policy-Based Network Management is gaining more and more proselytes. Its appeal is due to the given opportunity of a standard and consistent way for network configuration, independently of the underlying architecture and Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning model assumptions. The event-driven paradigm, well established in the general-purpose programmers world, through the Policy-Based approach begins to play its role also in the field of network management. In this paper we describe a policy framework suited for dynamic network management in QoS-enabled IP networks. First, we design an object model conceived to represent policies in a network-independent fashion. Then, we describe a management and configuration system based on Common Open Policy Service (COPS). Finally, we show a system prototype pointing out the main features of a Differentiated Services network management and configuration based on Policy System Management.

A variety of Web-based applications, mobile apps, and other over the top data services with affordable 3G/4G enabled smart devices are major factors for enormous increase in heterogeneous data traffic at enterprise and mobile networks. This creates challenges regarding traffic management and requires traffic-aware intelligent network management to deliver sustained quality of experience for subscribers. Deep packet inspection and analysis (DPIA) provides base platform for development of traffic-aware intelligent network management and security systems. However, computationally complex DPIA-related packet processing for high speed data traffic makes these systems expensive. Furthermore, conventionally these traffic-aware network management and security systems are deployed in enterprise networks with independent and dedicated DPIA-related processing resources and require multiple copies of passively provisioned high speed data from network, while performing similar DPIA operations over the same data again and again. This duplicate deployment of expensive software and hardware resources for DPIA processing eventually results in higher capital expenditures as well as operational expenditures for network operators. We have proposed a novel service-oriented framework for heterogeneous deep packet inspection and analysis (SoDPI) that simultaneously provides diversified DPIA services to multiple client applications for network management and security operations in high-speed networks. Proposed framework provides flexible and comprehensive API-based service interface for client applications to register required DPIA services. SoDPI framework implementation is based on commodity hardware and deploys shared set of DPIA-related packet processing components, requiring only single copy of passive data provisioned from network. Experimental evaluations show that novel SoDPI framework requires considerably reduced amount of software and hardware resources to fulfill heterogeneous DPIA packet processing requirements for multiple client applications in comparison with conventional network management and security applications with dedicated DPIA components. This results in lower cost impacts for network operators with more network manageability.

This paper provides an analytical framework for comparison between centralized and distributed models of policy-based network management (PBNM). Policy-based networks are being deployed in a variety of applications, in which the policy-enabled architecture may provide appropriate performance control depending on the particular application being used. Therefore, in this paper, each PBNM model is evaluated based on the performance and scalability provided when a policy is provisioned. Our metrics include a qualitative evaluation of the policy provisioning time, the amount of traffic measured between the PBNM components and PDP utilization. Each approach has its own merits and demerits depending on the particular application requirement. We highlight the fact that an appropriate architecture needs to be introduced, in order to optimize the PBNM deployment. The PBNM modeling framework presented in this paper is intended to quantity the merits and demerits of the currently available methodologies.
