Modules

This is an introductory text on the theory of modules over rings or, equivalently, over algebras, addressed to beginning graduate students. It stresses the importance of the categorical perspective and the use of homological tools. Modules are studied both from a classical point of view and a categorical one. For this purpose, rudiments of category theory, homological algebra and representations of quivers are introduced and applied in the study of module categories. After introducing such fundamental tools as the Hom functor and the tensor product comes the study of projective, injective and flat modules. The classical results, such as the classification of modules over principal ideal domains, the Jordan-Hölder, Wedderburn-Artin, and Morita theorems, are proven, as well as the Eilenberg-Watts theorems. Radicals (of modules, algebras and categories) are thoroughly studied. Homological invariants, such as the extension and torsion modules or the homological dimensions are introduced using derived functors and are applied in module theory. The book stresses the construction and analysis of examples.

A classical tensor product $${A \otimes B}$$ of complete lattices A and B, consisting of all down-sets in $${A \times B}$$ that are join-closed in either coordinate, is isomorphic to the complete lattice Gal(A,B) of Galois maps from A to B, turning arbitrary joins into meets. We introduce more general kinds of tensor products for closure spaces and for posets. They have the expected universal property for bimorphisms (separately continuous maps or maps preserving restricted joins in the two components) into complete lattices. The appropriate ingredient for quantale constructions is here distributivity at the bottom, a generalization of pseudocomplementedness. We show that the truncated tensor product of a complete lattice B with itself becomes a quantale with the closure of the relation product as multiplication iff B is pseudocomplemented, and that the tensor product has a unit element iff B is atomistic. The pseudocomplemented complete lattices form a semicategory in which the hom-set between two objects is their tensor product. The largest subcategory of that semicategory has as objects the atomic boolean complete lattices, which is equivalent to the category of sets and relations. More general results are obtained for closure spaces and posets.

As we now have tensor products in our armoury we can proceed with a definition of the homological invariants that are our basic object of study. The basic credit for their discovery, and equally for the creation of the powerful methods for investigating them (primarily the technique of resolutions and long exact sequences) is due to H. Cartan, Eilenberg and MacLane. The discipline they created, in a purely algebraic context, was given the name of “homological algebra” and is the subject of the widely known monographs [4, 5 and 19, Ch.I].

This series aims to report new developments in mathematical research and teaching -quickly, informally and at a high level.The type of material considered for publication includes: 1.Preliminary drafts of original papers and monographs 2. Lectures on a new field, or presenting a new angle on a classical field 3. Seminar work-outs 4. Reports of meetings, provided they are a) of exceptional interest or b) devoted to a single topic.

This chapter studies, in the setting of vector spaces over a field, the basics concerning multilinear functions, tensor products, spaces of linear functions, and algebras related to tensor products. Sections 1–5 concern special properties of bilinear forms, all vector spaces being assumed to be finite-dimensional. Section 1 associates a matrix to each bilinear form in the presence of an ordered basis, and the section shows the effect on the matrix of changing the ordered basis. It then addresses the extent to which the notion of “orthogonal complement” in the theory of inner-product spaces applies to nondegenerate bilinear forms. Sections 2–3 treat symmetric and alternating bilinear forms, producing bases for which the matrix of such a form is particularly simple. Section 4 treats a related subject, Hermitian forms when the field is the complex numbers. Section 5 discusses the groups that leave some particular bilinear and Hermitian forms invariant. Section 6 introduces the tensor product of two vector spaces, working with it in a way that does not depend on a choice of basis. The tensor product has a universal mapping property—that bilinear functions on the product of the two vector spaces extend uniquely to linear functions on the tensor product. The tensor product turns out to be a vector space whose dual is the vector space of all bilinear forms. One particular application is that tensor products provide a basis-independent way of extending scalars for a vector space from a field to a larger field. The section includes a number of results about the vector space of linear mappings from one vector space to another that go hand in hand with results about tensor products. These have convenient formulations in the language of category theory as “natural isomorphisms.” Section 7 begins with the tensor product of three and then $n$ vector spaces, carefully considering the universal mapping property and the question of associativity. The section defines an algebra over a field as a vector space with a bilinear multiplication, not necessarily associative. If $E$ is a vector space, the tensor algebra $T(E)$ of $E$ is the direct sum over $n\geq0$ of the $n$-fold tensor product of $E$ with itself. This is an associative algebra with a universal mapping property relative to any linear mapping of $E$ into an associative algebra $A$ with identity: the linear map extends to an algebra homomorphism of $T(E)$ into $A$ carrying 1 into 1. Sections 8–9 define the symmetric and exterior algebras of a vector space $E$. The symmetric algebra $S(E)$ is a quotient of $T(E)$ with the following universal mapping property: any linear mapping of $E$ into a commutative associative algebra $A$ with identity extends to an algebra homomorphism of $S(E)$ into $A$ carrying 1 into 1. The symmetric algebra is commutative. Similarly the exterior algebra $\bigwedge(E)$ is a quotient of $T(E)$ with this universal mapping property: any linear mapping $l$ of $E$ into an associative algebra $A$ with identity such that $l(v)^2=0$ for all $v\in E$ extends to an algebra homomorphism of $\bigwedge(E)$ into $A$ carrying 1 into 1. The problems at the end of the chapter introduce some other algebras that are of importance in applications, and the problems relate some of these algebras to tensor, symmetric, and exterior algebras. Among the objects studied are Lie algebras, universal enveloping algebras, Clifford algebras, Weyl algebras, Jordan algebras, and the division algebra of octonions.

This chapter develops tools for a more penetrating study of algebraic number theory than was possible in Chapter V and concludes by formulating two of the main three theorems of Chapter V in the modern setting of “adeles” and “ideles” commonly used in the subject.Sections 1–5 introduce discrete valuations, absolute values, and completions for fields, always paying attention to implications for number fields and for certain kinds of function fields. Section 1 contains a prototype for all these notions in the construction of the fieldQp of p-adic numbers formed out of the rationals. Discrete valuations in Section 2 are a generalization of the order-of-vanishing function about a point in the theory of one complex variable. Absolute values in Section 3 are real-valued multiplicative functions that give a metric on a field, and the pair consisting of a field and an absolute value is called a valued field. Inequivalent absolute values have a certain independence property that is captured by the Weak Approximation Theorem. Completions in Section 4 are functions mapping valued fields into their metric-space completions. Section 5 concerns Hensel’s Lemma, which in its simplest form allows one to lift roots of polynomials over finite prime fields Fp to roots of corresponding polynomials over p-adic fields Qp.Section 6 contains the main theorem for investigating the fundamental question of how prime ideals split in extensions. Let K be a finite separable extension of a field F, let R be a Dedekind domain with field of fractions F, and let T be the integral closure of R in K. The question concerns the factorization of an ideal pT in T when p is a nonzero prime ideal in R. If Fp denotes the completion of F with respect to p, the theorem explains how the tensor product K ⊗F Fp splits uniquely as a direct sum of completions of valued fields. The theorem in effect reduces the question of the splitting of pT in T to the splitting of Fp in a complete field in which only one of the prime factors of pT plays a role.Section 7 is a brief aside mentioning additional conclusions one can draw when the extension K/F is a Galois extension.Section 8 applies the main theorem of Section 6 to an analysis of the different of K/F and ultimately to the absolute discriminant of a number field. With the new sharp tools developed in the present chapter, including a Strong Approximation Theorem that is proved in Section 8, a complete proof is given for the Dedekind Discriminant Theorem; only a partial proof had been accessible in Chapter V.Sections 9–10 specialize to the case of number fields and to function fields that are finite separable extensions of Fq (X), where Fq is a finite field. The adele ring and the idele group are introduced for each of these kinds of fields, and it is shown how the original field embeds discretely in the adeles and how the multiplicative group embeds discretely in the ideles. The main theorems are compactness theorems about the quotient of the adeles by the embedded field and about the quotient of the normalized ideles by the embedded multiplicative group. Proofs are given only for number fields. In the first case the compactness encodes the Strong Approximation Theorem of Section 8 and the Artin product formula of Section 9. An abstract theorem concerning exact sequences of Banach algebras of operators and symbol homomorphisms relative to groups of operators is derived. This general result is used to deduce many of the classical spectral inclusion theorems and short exact sequences for algebras of singular integral operators.

The purpose of this series of papers is to present a general theory of Banach modules and to give some applications of it. The applications of the theory arise from observations that certain important notions of functional analysis are very closely related to certain Banach algebras and thereby to a module structure. This holds in particular for Banach lattices (which are C(X)-modules), interpolation spaces, tensor products and operator ideals.

We give a test that can distinguish efficiently between product states of n quantum systems and states that are far from product. If applied to a state | ψ 〉 whose maximum overlap with a product state is 1 − ε , the test passes with probability 1 − Θ ( ε ), regardless of n or the local dimensions of the individual systems. The test uses two copies of | ψ 〉. We prove correctness of this test as a special case of a more general result regarding stability of maximum output purity of the depolarizing channel. A key application of the test is to quantum Merlin-Arthur games with multiple Merlins, where we obtain several structural results that had been previously conjectured, including the fact that efficient soundness amplification is possible and that two Merlins can simulate many Merlins: QMA( k ) = QMA(2) for k ≥ 2. Building on a previous result of Aaronson et al., this implies that there is an efficient quantum algorithm to verify 3-SAT with constant soundness, given two unentangled proofs of Õ (√ n ) qubits. We also show how QMA(2) with log-sized proofs is equivalent to a large number of problems, some related to quantum information (such as testing separability of mixed states) as well as problems without any apparent connection to quantum mechanics (such as computing injective tensor norms of 3-index tensors). As a consequence, we obtain many hardness-of-approximation results, as well as potential algorithmic applications of methods for approximating QMA(2) acceptance probabilities. Finally, our test can also be used to construct an efficient test for determining whether a unitary operator is a tensor product, which is a generalization of classical linearity testing.

Starting from its original definition in module categories with respect to projective modules, the index has played an important role in various aspects of homological algebra, categorification of cluster algebras and K -theory. In the last few years, the notion of index has been generalised to several different contexts in (higher) homological algebra, typically with respect to a (higher) cluster-tilting subcategory X of the relevant ambient category C . The recent tools of extriangulated and higher-exangulated categories have permitted some conditions on the subcategory X to be relaxed. In this paper, we introduce the index with respect to a generating, contravariantly finite subcategory of a d -exact category that has d -kernels. We show that our index has the important property of being additive on d -exact sequences up to an error term.

Following a recent proposal of Richard Borcherds to regard fusion as the ringlike tensor product of modules of a quantum ring, a generalization of rings and vertex algebras, we define fusion as a certain quotient of the (vector space) tensor product of representations of the symmetry algebra [Formula: see text]. We prove that this tensor product is associative and symmetric up to equivalence. We also determine explicitly the action of [Formula: see text] on it, under which the central extension is preserved. Having defined fusion in this way, determining the fusion rules is then the algebraic problem of decomposing the tensor product into irreducible representations. We demonstrate how to solve this for the case of the WZW and the minimal models and recover thereby the well-known fusion rules. The action of the symmetry algebra on the tensor product is given in terms of a comultiplication. We calculate the R matrix of this comultiplication and find that it is triangular. This seems to shed some new light on the possible rôle of the quantum group in conformal field theory.

Let $T$ be an infinitely generated tilting module of projective dimension at\nmost one over an arbitrary associative ring $A$, and let $B$ be the\nendomorphism ring of $T$. In this paper, we prove that if $T$ is good then\nthere exists a ring $C$, a homological ring epimorphism $B\\ra C$ and a\nrecollement among the (unbounded) derived module categories $\\D{C}$ of $C$,\n$\\D{B}$ of $B$, and $\\D{A}$ of $A$. In particular, the kernel of the total left\nderived functor $T\\otimes_B^{\\mathbb L}-$ is triangle equivalent to the derived\nmodule category $\\D{C}$. Conversely, if the functor $T\\otimes_B^{\\mathbb L}-$\nadmits a fully faithful left adjoint functor, then $T$ is a good tilting\nmodule. We apply our result to tilting modules arising from ring epimorphisms,\nand can then describe the rings $C$ as coproducts of two relevant rings.\nFurther, in case of commutative rings, we can weaken the condition of being\ntilting modules, strengthen the rings $C$ as tensor products of two commutative\nrings, and get similar recollements. Consequently, we can produce examples\n(from commutative algebra and $p$-adic number theory, or Kronecker algebra) to\nshow that two different stratifications of the derived module category of a\nring by derived module categories of rings may have completely different\nderived composition factors (even up to ordering and up to derived\nequivalence),or different lengths. This shows that the Jordan-H\\"older theorem\nfails even for stratifications by derived module categories, and also answers\nnegatively an open problem by Angeleri-H\\"ugel, K\\"onig and Liu.\n
