Moduli of K3 Surfaces and Complex Ball Quotients

The wall-crossing behavior for Bridgeland’s stability conditions on the derived category of coherent sheaves on K3 or abelian surface is studied. We introduce two types of walls. One is called the wall for categories, where the t-structure encoded by stability condition is changed. The other is the wall for stabilities, where stable objects with prescribed Mukai vector may get destabilized. Some fundamental properties of walls and chambers are studied, including the behavior under Fourier–Mukai transforms. A wall-crossing formula of the counting of stable objects will also be derived. As an application, we will explain previous results on the birational maps induced by Fourier–Mukai transforms on abelian surfaces. These transformations turns out to coincide with crossing walls of certain property.

Kuga and Satake associate with every polarized complex K3 surface (X, ℒ) a complex abelian variety called the Kuga-Satake abelian variety of (X, ℒ). We use this construction to define morphisms between moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces with certain level structures and moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties with level structure over ℂ. In this note we study these morphisms. We prove first that they are defined over finite extensions of ℚ. This is done by proving analogues of the main theorems of complex multiplication for abelian varieties for K3 surfaces. Then we show that they extend in positive characteristic. In this way we give an indirect construction of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties over an arbitrary base. We also give some applications of this construction to canonical lifts of ordinary K3 surfaces.

We relate the Brauer group of a Kummer surface to the Brauer group of the corresponding abelian surface. For many pairs of elliptic curves over the rational numbers we prove that the Kummer surface attached to their product has trivial Brauer group.

A K3 category is by definition a Calabi–Yau category of dimension two. Geometrically K3 categories occur as bounded derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves on K3 or abelian surfaces. A K3 category is generic if there are no spherical objects (or just one up to shift). We study stability conditions on K3 categories as introduced by Bridgeland and prove his conjecture about the topology of the stability manifold and the autoequivalences group for generic twisted projective K3, abelian surfaces, and K3 surfaces with trivial Picard group.

In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron–Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surfaces explicitly and to study their specializations.

A remarkable result of Peter O’Sullivan asserts that the algebra epimorphism from the rational Chow ring of an abelian variety to its rational Chow ring modulo numerical equivalence admits a (canonical) section. Motivated by Beauville’s splitting principle, we formulate a conjectural Section Property which predicts that for smooth projective holomorphic symplectic varieties there exists such a section of algebra whose image contains all the Chern classes of the variety. In this paper, we investigate this property for (not necessarily symplectic) varieties with a Chow motive of abelian type. We introduce the notion of a symmetrically distinguished abelian motive and use it to provide a sufficient condition for a smooth projective variety to admit such a section. We then give a series of examples of varieties for which our theory works. For instance, we prove the existence of such a section for arbitrary products of varieties with Chow groups of finite rank, abelian varieties, hyperelliptic curves, Fermat cubic hypersurfaces, Hilbert schemes of points on an abelian surface or a Kummer surface or a K3 surface with Picard number at least 19, and generalized Kummer varieties. The latter cases provide evidence for the conjectural Section Property and exemplify the mantra that the motives of holomorphic symplectic varieties should behave as the motives of abelian varieties, as algebra objects.

Let Θ be a variety of algebras. In every variety Θ and every algebra H from Θ one can consider algebraic geometry in Θ over H. We also consider a special categorical invariant KΘ of this geometry. The classical algebraic geometry deals with the variety Θ = Com-P of all associative and commutative algebras over the ground field of constants P. An algebra H in this setting is an extension of the ground field P. Geometry in groups is related to the varieties Grp and Grp-G, where G is a group of constants. The case Grp-F, where F is a free group, is related to Tarski’s problems devoted to logic of a free group. The described general insight on algebraic geometry in different varieties of algebras inspires some new problems in algebra and algebraic geometry. The problems of such kind determine, to a great extent, the content of universal algebraic geometry. For example, a general and natural problem is: When do algebras H1 and H2 have the same geometry? Or more specifically, what are the conditions on algebras from a given variety Θ that provide the coincidence of their algebraic geometries? We consider two variants of coincidence: 1) KΘ(H1) and KΘ(H2) are isomorphic; 2) these categories are equivalent. This problem is closely connected with the following general algebraic problem. Let Θ0 be the category of all algebras W = W(X) free in Θ, where X is finite. Consider the groups of automorphisms Aunt(Θ0) for different varieties Θ and also the groups of autoequivalences of Θ0. The problem is to describe these groups for different Θ.

Hodge theory is pivotal in studying algebraic varieties' intricate geometry and topology: it provides essential insights into their structure. The Hodge decomposition theorem establishes a profound link between the geometry of varieties and their cohomology groups, helping to understand their underlying properties. Moreover, Hodge theory was crucial at the inception of the field of mirror symmetry, revealing deep connections among seemingly disparate algebraic varieties. It also sheds light on studying algebraic cycles and motives, crucial objects in algebraic geometry. This article explores Hodge polynomials and their properties, specifically focusing on non-Kähler complex manifolds. We investigate a diverse range of such manifolds, including (quasi-)Hopf, (quasi-)Calabi-Eckmann, and LVM manifolds, alongside a class of definable complex manifolds encompassing both algebraic varieties and the aforementioned special cases. Our research establishes the preservation of the motivic nature of Hodge polynomials inside this broader context. Through explicit calculations and thorough analyses, this work contributes to a deeper understanding of complex manifold geometry beyond the realm of algebraic varieties. The outcomes of this study have potential applications in various areas of mathematics and physics where complex manifolds play a significant role.

Recent workers [1, 3] have proved density theorems about the rational points on K3 surfaces of the form $$ V:\;X_0^4+cX_1^4=X_2^4+cX_3^4 $$ for certain non-zero values of c. Their arguments depend on the presence of at least two pencils of curves of genus 1 on V. Unfortunately the values of c for which the argument works are constrained by the need to exhibit explicitly a rational point on V which satisfies certain extra conditions; these in particular require it to lie outside the four obvious rational lines on V. It is therefore natural to ask whether there are other curves of genus 0 or 1 defined over Q on V. In the case c = 1 there are known to be infinitely many such curves (see [2]), and for general rational c the quadratic form Q on the Néron–Severi group whose value is the self-intersection number takes the values 0 and -2 infinitely often. Naively one might expect the case c = 1 to be typical; but this is not so. The main object of this paper is to prove the following result.

We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Gottsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Gottsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

This book provides a systematic exposition of the theory of Fourier-Mukai transforms from an algebro-geometric point of view. Assuming a basic knowledge of algebraic geometry, the key aspect of this book is the derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety. The derived category is a subtle invariant of the isomorphism type of a variety, and its group of autoequivalences often shows a rich structure. As it turns out — and this feature is pursued throughout the book — the behaviour of the derived category is determined by the geometric properties of the canonical bundle of the variety. Including notions from other areas, e.g., singular cohomology, Hodge theory, abelian varieties, K3 surfaces; full proofs and exercises are provided. The final chapter summarizes recent research directions, such as connections to orbifolds and the representation theory of finite groups via the McKay correspondence, stability conditions on triangulated categories, and the notion of the derived category of sheaves twisted by a gerbe.

We prove the Green conjecture for generic curves of odd genus. That is we prove the vanishing $K_{k,1}(X,K_X)=0$ for $X$ generic of genus $2k+1$. The curves we consider are smooth curves $X$ on a K3 surface whose Picard group has rank 2. This completes our previous work, where the Green conjecture for generic curves of genus $g$ with fixed gonality $d$ was proved in the range $d\geq g/3$, with the possible exception of the generic curves of odd genus.

With a view toward a fracton theory in condensed matter, we introduce a higher-moment polynomial degree-p global symmetry, acting on complex scalar/vector/tensor fields (e.g., ordinary or vector global symmetry for p$=0$ and p$=1$ respectively). We relate this higher-moment global symmetry of $n$-dimensional space, to a lower degree (either ordinary or higher-moment, e.g., degree-(p-$\ell$)) subdimensional or subsystem global symmetry on layers of $(n-\ell)$-submanifolds. These submanifolds are algebraic affine varieties (i.e., solutions of polynomials). The structure of layers of submanifolds as subvarieties can be studied via mathematical tools of embedding, foliation, and algebraic geometry. We also generalize Noether's theorem for this higher-moment polynomial global symmetry. We can promote the higher-moment global symmetry to a local symmetry, and derive a new family of higher-rank-m symmetric tensor gauge theory by gauging, with m = p$+1$. By further gauging a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2^C$ charge conjugation (particle-hole) symmetry, we derive a new general class of rank-m tensor non-abelian gauge field theory (the gauge structure is non-commutative thus non-abelian but not an ordinary group): a hybrid class of (symmetric or non-symmetric) higher-rank-m tensor gauge theory and anti-symmetric tensor topological field theory, generalizing [arXiv:1909.13879], interplaying between gapless and gapped sectors.

We formulate an analogue of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for Abelian schemes with everywhere good reduction over higher dimensional bases over finite fields of characteristic p . We prove the prime-to- p part conditionally on the finiteness of the p -primary part of the Tate-Shafarevich group or the equality of the analytic and the algebraic rank. If the base is a product of curves, Abelian varieties and K3 surfaces, we prove the prime-to- p part of the conjecture for constant or isoconstant Abelian schemes, in particular the prime-to- p part for (1) relative elliptic curves with good reduction or (2) Abelian schemes with constant isomorphism type of \mathscr{A}[p] or (3) Abelian schemes with supersingular generic fibre, and the full conjecture for relative elliptic curves with good reduction over curves and for constant Abelian schemes over arbitrary bases. We also reduce the conjecture to the case of surfaces as the basis.

One of the most surprising things in algebraic geometry is the fact that algebraic varieties over the complex numbers benefit from a collection of metric properties which strongly influence their topological and geometric shapes. The existence of a Kahler metric leads to all sorts of Hodge theoretical restrictions on the homotopy types of algebraic varieties. On the other hand, a sparse collection of examples shows that the remaining liberty is nontrivially large. Paradoxically, with all of this information, the research field remains as wide open as it was many decades ago, because the gap between the known restrictions, and the known examples of what can occur, only seems to grow wider and wider the more closely we look at it. In spite of the differential-geometric nature of the questions and methods, the origins of the situation are very algebraic. We look at subvarieties of projective space over the complex numbers. The main over-arching problem in algebraic geometry is to understand the classification of algebro-geometric objects. The topology of the usual complex-valued points of a variety plays an important role, because the topological type is a locally constant function on any classifying space. Thus the partitioning of the classification problem according to topological type provides a coarse, and more calculable, alternative to the partition by connected components. Furthermore, the topology of a variety strongly influences its geometric properties. A sociological observation is that the quest for understanding the topology of algebraic varieties has led to a rich set of techniques which found applications elsewhere, even in physics. Perhaps a word about the choice of ground field is appropriate. One could also look at the shapes of the real points of real algebraic varieties. However, by Weierstrass approximation, pretty much anything can arise if you let the degree get big enough. Thus the classical question in this case is “which shapes can occur for a given degree?” This is so much more difficult
