Collaborative filtering (CF), a technique used by recommendation systems, predicts and recommends items (information, products or services) that the user might like. Amazon.com's recommender system is one of the most famous examples of CF. Recommendation systems are popular in both commercial and research sectors, and they are applied in a variety of applications such as movies, music, books, social connections and venues. In particular, movie recommendation systems produce personal recommendations for movies. Existing CF algorithms employed in movie recommendation systems predict the unknown rating of a given user for a movie using only the ratings (i.e., preferences) of other like-minded users who have seen the movie. In such approaches, there exist certain limits in improving the accuracy of recommendation systems. This paper proposes an algorithm for movie recommendation that exploits the genre of the movie to enhance the accuracy of rating predictions. The proposed algorithm 1) numerically measures the correlation between movie genres using movie rating information; 2) classifies movies using the genre correlations and generates a list of recommended movies for the target user with the classified movies; and finally 3) predicts the ratings of the movies in the list using traditional CF algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields higher accuracy in movie rating predictions than existing movie recommendation algorithms.

Read moreA novel hybrid approach towards movie recommender systems
Collaborative and content-based filtering are the majorly used approaches towards implementing recommender systems which can successfully predict the item(s) to be recommended to users based upon their preferences. Each of the methods has its own advantages and disadvantages that are specific to the situation they are used in. The hybrid approach aims to combine both techniques in multiple ways to optimize results and overcome shortcomings. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach based recommendation engine to improve accuracy. While content based recommendations are made on the similarity of items’ attributes, collaborative recommendations are based on similarity of users. Collaborative filtering is achieved by matrix factorization technique. One of the most effective algorithms for matrix factorization: Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) has been used to perform collaborative filtering and combined with content based model to predict the item ratings per user. The paper aims to achieve the final result with minimum possible errors as per user preferences and recommended items.

Recently, the demand for online and offline recommendation systems has increased drastically. These systems are widely used in tourism, music, and video or movie recommendations. Currently, online movie streaming applications have gained huge attention. Providing better recommendations to the user is a challenging task for these applications. The content-based filtering (CBF) recommender system is a promising technique for these systems. However, traditional systems suffer from challenges such as cold-start problems, sparsity, and scalability. Consequently, we strengthen content-based recommendation algorithms by enriching the user-related and relevant product models with effective tendencies. The majority of previous work on classifiers has been in recommendation systems. To overcome these issues, we present a deep learning model that uses a deep neural network mechanism and a multiplicative BiLSTM model. This scheme uses embedding, weight updating, and preference learning processes to improve the recommendation system's performance. The performance of the proposed approach is measured in terms of MAE, MAP, Precision, Recall, and F-measure. The comparative performance shows that the proposed approach achieves better performance when compared with state-of-art movie recommendation techniques.

The limits of conventional recommender systems, such collaborative filtering, have made it more difficult to find suitable content inside large digital movie archives given the explosive growth of online streaming services. A issue known as the cold start problem, these systems often suffer from data sparsity, insufficient scalability, and an incapacity to efficiently accommodate new clients or products. This work uses Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, a type of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) adept in gathering long-term dependencies in sequential user activity, hence improving the accuracy and personalizing power of movie suggestions. Using the MovieLens data, we developed and trained an LSTM-based recommender model applying strict preprocessing, temporal modeling, and dynamic learning rate approaches. Experimental evaluations utilizing standard metrics like RMSE, MAE, and Precision@10 show that the LSTM-based system beats conventional approaches included as collaborative filtering, matrix factorization, and neural collaborative filtering. The results show that over time modeling user preferences greatly improves the quality of suggestions. The findings show that LSTM networks offer a feasible and efficient way to create scalable, context-aware recommender systems, therefore enhancing user pleasure and involvement in the digital entertainment industry.

Tackling the cold start issue in movie recommendations with a refined epsilon-greedy approach
With the rapid growth of the Internet and the consequent surge in data, the current era is characterized by information overload. As the domain of data processing and storage expands, recommendation systems have become pivotal tools in navigating this deluge, assisting users in filtering through vast information landscapes. A notable segment of this is movie recommendation systems. As living standards rise, so does the demand for cinematic experiences. Enhancing and refining the methodologies of these recommendation systems is, therefore, of significant value. However, a consistent challenge is the cold start problem encountered when new users join. Without prior viewing records or preferences, these users pose a dilemma for the system: how to offer relevant recommendations without historical data? Addressing this challenge, this paper proposes a unique method grounded in the N-armed bandit model, introducing an enhanced Epsilon-greedy algorithm specifically designed for movie recommendations for such users. By adjusting dynamically based on real-time user feedback, the algorithm aims to continuously hone its recommendation quality, ensuring a consistently better user experience.

This paper addresses the subject of Movie Recommendation Systems, focusing on two of the most well-known filtering techniques, Collaborative Filtering and Content-based Filtering. The first approach proposes a supervised probabilistic Bayesian model that forms recommendations based on the previous evaluations of other movies the user has watched. The second approach composes an unsupervised learning technique that forms clusters of users, using the K-Means algorithm, based on their preference of different movie genres, as it is expressed through their ratings. Both of the above approaches are compared to each other as well as to a basic method known as Weighted Sum, which makes predictions based on the cosine similarity and the euclidean distance between users and movies. In addition, Content-based Filtering is implemented through K-Means clustering techniques that focus on identifying the resemblance between movie plots. The first approach clusters movies according to the Tf/Idf weighting scheme, applying weights to the terms of movie plots. The latter identifies the likeness between movie plots, utilizing the BM25 algorithm. The efficiency of the above methods is calculated through the Accuracy metric.
Read moreHybrid Movie Recommendation System Integrating Emotion Detection
Movie recommendation systems usually don't take into account how people are feeling, which results in generic suggestions that don't feel personal. Most systems rely on either collaborative filtering or content-based filtering. These methods can struggle when there isn't much data to work with and often overlook what the user is actually feeling. This paper introduces a mixed approach that brings together emotion detection with both content-based and collaborative filtering to fix these issues. The system starts by checking the user's input (like I'm feeling nostalgic) using Natural Language Processing to figure out their emotions, which helps in suggesting movie genres. For content-based recommendations, it processes movie info like genres, cast, and keywords. Collaborative filtering looks at how users have interacted with movies to find similar likes. The mixed algorithm can pick or blend these methods based on the input type, working well even when there isn't much data. Tests show this system does a good job, with an average F1score of 84% for emotion detection, and it can give relevant recommendations in under half a second. Examples show that when users give emotion-driven prompts, they get spot-on results (like using the word joy leads to comedies such as The Princess Bride), while asking about specific movies leads to varied choices (for instance, Inception might suggest The Hobbit for similarity and a prediction for The Dark Knight that reflects the preferences of individual users. This approach overcomes the limitations of traditional systems by delivering recommendations that are tailored, precise, and robust enough to scale. Both qualitative evaluations and quantitative measures demonstrate that the method effectively harmonizes relevance with diversity, establishing it as a pragmatic solution for realworld deployment.
