Multi-privacy biometric protection scheme using ensemble systems

In recent years the security breaches and fraud transactions are increasing day by day. So there is a necessity for highly secure authentication technologies. The security of an authentication system can be strengthened by using Biometric system rather than the traditional method of authentication like Identity Cards (ID) and password which can be stolen easily. A biometric system works on biometric traits and fingerprint has the maximum share in market for providing biometric authentication as it is reliable, consistent and easy to capture. Although the biometric system is used to provide security to many applications but it is susceptible to different types of assaults too. Among all the modules of the biometric system which needs security, biometric template protection has received great consideration in the past years from the research community due to sensitivity of the biometric data stored in the form of template. A number of methods have been devised for providing template protection. Fuzzy vault is one of the cryptosystem based method of template security. The aim of fuzzy vault technique is to protect the precarious data with the biometric template in a way that only certified user can access the secret by providing valid biometric. In this paper, a modified version of fuzzy vault is presented to increase the level of security to the template and the secret key. The polynomial whose coefficients represent the key is transformed using an integral operator to hide the key where the key can no longer be derived if the polynomial is known to the attacker. The proposed fuzzy vault scheme also prevents the system from stolen key inversion attack. The results are achieved in terms of False Accept Rate (FAR), False Reject Rate (FRR), Genuine Acceptance Rate (GAR) by varying the degree of polynomial and number of biometric samples. It was calculated that for 40 users GAR was found to be 92%, 90%, 85% for degree of polynomial to be 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Template-Protection-Techniken stellen eine wichtige Ergänzung zu biometrischen Systemen, um das gewünschte Sicherheitsniveau zu erreichen und die Anforderungen an den Schutz der Privatsphäre zu erfüllen. Diese Techniken ermöglichen Erneuerung und Widerruf der Referenzendaten in biometrischen Systemen. In dieser Arbeit wird ein systematisches Evaluierungsframework entwickelt, das sich an die wesentlichen Kriterien und Anforderungen an biometrische Template-Protection-Verfahren festhält. Seine Anwendbarkeit wird durch die Analyse der verschiedenen Algorithmen demonstriert. Die in dieser Arbeit präsentierte Evaluierung ist grundlegend für eine vollständige Analyse. Darüber hinaus ermöglicht es einen Nachweis der Sicherheit und Einhaltung der Privatsphäre. Es schafft eine Basis für Zertifizierung und Benchmark der Template-Protection-Verfahren.

Biometric systems are based on capturing human bodily features and using them for authentication. Depending on single or multiple biometric traits used for authentication, unimodal or multimodal biometric systems can be implemented. Human iris & fingerprints have unique texture pattern and this can be used for identifying the person. In this paper a multimodal biometric system based on iris and fingerprint is proposed. Texture feature extraction using Hybrid wavelets is done. Fingerprint & Iris features are extracted using multilevel decomposition of captured sample image using a new family of wavelet called Hybrid wavelet. In this paper KNN classifier used for unimodal fingerprint recognition and multi-instance iris recognition. Feature vector of iris and fingerprint are combined using decision fusion technique. The FAR-FRR analysis is performed and the results suggests that the Hybrid Wavelets are having good texture feature extraction ability and proposed system has achieved up to 77% correct classification ration.

In this work, a multibiometric system has been developed to overcome the drawbacks associated with monomodal biometric systems, such as noise, intra-class variability, distinctiveness, non-universality and spoof attacks. Information from three different Fisher’s Linear Discriminant driven monomodal experts based on face, ear and signature biometric traits are combined through decision level fusion method. AND/OR, majority voting, weighted majority voting and behavioural knowledge space approaches of decision level fusion method are examined to achieve a higher recognition accuracy. Experimental results indicate that fusing information from multiple biometric traits can results in higher recognition rates. The system can be a contribution to homeland security or other intelligence departments.

A robust embedded biometric authentication system based on fingerprint and chaotic encryption

Multiple matching algorithms are used to locate the occurrences of patterns from a finite pattern set in a large input string. Aho–Corasick and Wu–Manber, two of the most well known algorithms for multiple matching require an increased computing power, particularly in cases where large-size datasets must be processed, as is common in computational biology applications. Over the past years, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have evolved to powerful parallel processors outperforming Central Processing Units (CPUs) in scientific calculations. Moreover, multiple GPUs can be used in parallel, forming hybrid computer cluster configurations to achieve an even higher processing throughput. This paper evaluates the speedup of the parallel implementation of the Aho–Corasick and Wu–Manber algorithms on a hybrid GPU cluster, when used to process a snapshot of the Expressed Sequence Tags of the human genome and for different problem parameters.

The aim of this paper is to exploit the best possible combinations of hand geometry, palmprint and offline signatures for multimodal biometric systems by integrating the information at score level fusion. Initially, Zernike moments are extracted for each biometric trait of a person and study the identification accuracy. Subsequently, the effect of identification accuracy using score level fusion of multiple traits of a person is studied. Experiments are conducted on GPDS hand geometry database, PolyU two dimensional palmprint database and UOM offline signature database to assess the actual advantage of the fusion of multiple biometric traits performed at score level fusion, in comparison to the unimodal biometric system. The proposed methodology has shown promising results.

Score normalization applied to adaptive biometric systems

Theft of a template is theft of identity. Fingerprint identification is used by forensic department in identifying criminals because of its uniqueness. Biometrics is the science of verifying and establishing the identity of an individual through physiological features or behavioral traits. Fingerprint identification is commonly employed in Forensic science to support criminal investigations and in biometric systems such as civilian and commercial identification devices. The best way to identify criminals is using fingerprint verification which cannot be replaced. So such fingerprint acquired from the criminal should be safely stored and protected from hackers for future references. This paper mainly deals with protecting the criminal's record (fingerprint template). Templates represent intrinsic information about a criminal. The criminal record (Fingerprint template) should be protected from creation of physical spoof and replacement by imposter's template to gain unauthorized access. Due to these reasons, fool-proof techniques are required for securely storing the criminal fingerprint records. Fuzzy vault is a cryptographic construct that is designed to work with biometric features represented as an unordered set like minutiae points. Template protection is done by transformation based approaches and biometric cryptosystems. During transformation template is stored in a transformed form so that the original biometric template cannot be easily recovered. Fingerprint from the criminal is first preprocessed and minutiae points are extracted. Preprocessing is very essential because the creation of fuzzy vault highly depends on the quality of the input fingerprint image. Then image is binarized followed by thinning and then region of interest (ROI) is calculated finally followed by removal of false minutiae points. The remaining useful minutiae points are used in fuzzy vault generation. A polynomial is evaluated from the secret key which is combined with minutiae points to produce a secure vault. Some dummy points called chaff points are also added to increase the security. The security of the fuzzy vault depends on the infeasibility of the polynomial reconstruction and the number of chaff points. In the proposed system an even more secured fuzzy vault is generated with combined features of fingerprint and palm print to enhance the security of the template stored.

Biometric authentication systems operating in real world environments using a single modality are found to be insecure and unreliable due to numerous limitations. Multimodal biometric systems have better accuracy and reliability due to the use of multiple biometric traits to authenticate a claimed identity or perform identification. In this paper a novel method for person identification using multimodal biometrics with hand geometry and palmprint biometric traits is proposed. The geometrical information embedded in the user hand and palmprint images are brought out through the graph representations. The topological characterization of the image moments, represented as the virtual nodes of the palmprint image graph is a novel feature of this work. The user hand and palmprint images are represented as weighted undirected graphs and spectral characteristics of the graphs are extracted as features vectors. The feature vectors of the hand geometry and palmprint are fused at feature level to obtain a graph spectral feature vector to represent the person. User identification is performed by using a multiclass support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The experimental results demonstrate, an appreciable performance giving identification rate of 99.19% for multimodal biometric after feature level fusion of hand geometry and palmprint modalities. The performance is investigated by conducting the experiments separately for handgeometry, palmprint and fused feature vectors for person identification. Experimental results show that the proposed multimodal system achieves better performance than the unimodal cues, and can be used in high security applications. Further comparison show that it is better than similar other multimodal techniques.

The need for fool proof authentication procedures away from traditional authentication mechanisms like passwords, security PINS has led to the advent of biometric authentication in information systems. Biometric data extracted from physiological features of a person including but not limited to fingerprints, palm prints, face or retina for purpose of verification & identification is saved as biometric templates. The inception of biometrics in access control systems has not been without its own hitches & like other systems it has its fair share of challenges. Biometric fingerprints being the most mature of all biometric spheres are the most widely adopted biometric authentication systems. Biometric systems effectiveness lies on how secure they are at preventing inadvertent disclosure of biometric templates in an information system’s archive. This however has not been the case as biometric templates have been fraudulently accessed to gain unauthorized access in identification and verification systems. In order to achieve strong and secure biometric systems, biometric systems developers need to build biometric systems that properly secure biometric templates. Several biometric template protection schemes and approaches have been proposed and used to safeguard stored biometric templates. Despite there being various biometric template protection schemes and approaches in existence, none of them has provided the most authentic, reliable, efficient and deterrent means to totally secure biometric fingerprint templates. This research sought to establish status of the current biometric template protection techniques and methods by conducting a survey and analyzing data gathered from a sample of seventy-eight (78) respondents. We will report these results and give our conclusion based on findings of the survey in this paper.

This research paper aims to contribute to the field of biometric attendance systems. Biometric system which uses unique biological traits like fingerprints for identification and authentication, offers several benefits over traditional authentication methods like passwords or ID cards. The benefits of using biometric system can be enhanced security, convenience and high efficiency, reduced risk of fraud, cost-effective in long run, accountability, scalability, multi-factor authentication, etc. In most of the organizations or institutes attendance is taken by the traditional methods like register book but this method takes time then attendance from these registers is uploaded to server for further attendance report of students. To withstand this problem, we have proposed an IoT based multipurpose biometric authentication system. We have developed a portable system that includes fingerprint sensors to recognize the fingerprint of various students and show the details of the students whose fingerprints have been scanned. The data from the fingerprint scanner is sent to the Raspberry PI server using Wi-Fi. We also have also designed a user interface for students and faculty to view and manage the students and their attendance. The attendance report can be exported to excel file any time faculty want the report. The biometric system provides 80% efficiency over the regular attendance methods.

Privacy-preserving record linkage (PPRL) can improve the utility of clinical data for research and discovery by merging disparate data sources to provide a more complete record of a patient. We assess the performance of record linkage across two data sets consisting of cancer registry data and electronic health records (EHRs). Using two data sources-EHR extracts and records from the Missouri Cancer Registry (MCR)-we performed various validation exercises, including an audit by the MCR and a comparative evaluation using multiple matching algorithms. Results indicated substantial matching performance, with high recall and precision rates. We conclude that the refined data linkage process significantly supports enhanced research capabilities without compromising patient privacy, thereby enabling reliable data integration for clinical research in oncology.

Nowadays, biometric recognition represents an integral component of identity management and access control systems, replacing PINs or passwords. However, the wide deployment of biometric recognition systems in the past decades has raised numerous privacy concerns regarding the storage and use of biometric data. Due to the fact that the link between individuals and their biometric characteristics, e.g. fingerprints or iris, is strong and permanent, biometric reference data (templates) need to be protected in order to safeguard individuals' privacy and biometric systems' security. In particular, unprotected biometric templates can be abused to crossmatch biometric databases, i.e. tracking individuals without consent, and to launch presentation attacks employing specific inversion techniques. Technologies of biometric template protection offer solutions to privacy preserving biometric authentication, which improves the public confidence and acceptance of biometric systems. While biometric template protection has been an active research topic over the last 20 years, proposed solutions are still far from gaining practical acceptance. The existing gap between theory and practice, which results in a trade-off between privacy protection and recognition accuracy, is caused by numerous factors. To facilitate a standardized design and application of biometric template protection schemes, researchers have to solve several open problems. This chapter provides an overview of state-of-the-art technologies of biometric template protection and discusses main issues and challenges.

In identity management system, commonly used biometric recognition system needs attention towards issue of biometric template protection as far as more reliable solution is concerned.In view of this biometric template protection algorithm should satisfy security, discriminability and cancelability.As no single template protection method is capable of satisfying the basic requirements, a novel technique for face template generation and protection is proposed.The novel approach is proposed to provide security and accuracy in new user enrollment as well as authentication process.This novel technique takes advantage of both the hybrid approach and the binary discriminant analysis algorithm.This algorithm is designed on the basis of random projection, binary discriminant analysis and fuzzy commitment scheme.Three publicly available benchmark face databases are used for evaluation.The proposed novel technique enhances the discriminability and recognition accuracy by 80% in terms of matching score of the face images and provides high security.
