Multilevel thresholding for image segmentation based on parallel distributed optimization

Multilevel thresholding for image segmentation is a crucial process in several applications such as feature extraction and pattern recognition. The meticulous search for the best values for the optimization of fitness function using classical operations needs profuse computational time, which also results in inaccuracy and instability. In this paper, a new beta differential evolution (BDE)-based fast color image multilevel thresholding scheme using two objective functions has been presented. The optimal threshold values are determined by maximizing Kapur’s and Tsallis entropy (entropy criterion) thresholding functions coupled with BDE algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed method is examined over existing multilevel thresholding methods such as artificial bee colony, particle swarm optimization, wind-driven optimization and differential evolution. These approaches are aimed to determine optimum threshold values at different levels of thresholding for color image segmentation. The proficiency of the presented methodology is demonstrated visually and computationally on five real-life true color images as well as four satellite images. Experimental outcomes are exhibited in terms of the optimal threshold value, best objective function and computational cost (in seconds) for each method at different thresholding levels. Afterward, the proposed scheme is examined intensively regarding the superiority of quality. The experimentally evaluated results show that the proposed BDE-based approach for multilevel color image segmentation can accurately and efficiently examine for multiple thresholds, which are near to optimal ones searched using an exhaustive search process.

The image segmentation refers to the extraction of region of interest and it plays a vital role in medical image processing. This work proposes multilevel thresholding based on optimization technique for the extraction of region of interest and compression of DICOM images by an improved prediction lossless algorithm for telemedicine applications. The role of compression algorithm is inevitable in data storage and transfer. Compared to the conventional thresholding, multilevel thresholding technique plays an efficient role in image analysis. In this paper, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO), and Fractional Order Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization (FODPSO) are employed in the estimation of the threshold value. The simulation results reveal that the FODPSO-based multilevel level thresholding generate superior results. The fractional coefficient in FODPSO algorithm makes it effective optimization with fast convergence rate. The classification and blending prediction-based lossless compression algorithm generates efficient results when compared with the JPEG lossy and JPEG lossless approaches. The algorithms are tested for various threshold values and higher value of PSNR indicates the proficiency of the proposed segmentation approach. The performance of the compression algorithms was validated by metrics and was found to be appropriate for data transfer in telemedicine. The algorithms are developed in Matlab2010a and tested on DICOM CT images.

Multilevel thresholding image segmentation will subdivide an image into several meaningful regions or objects, which makes the image more informative and easier to analyze. Optimal multilevel thresholding approaches are extensively used for segmentation because they are easy to implement and offer low computational cost. Multilevel thresholding image segmentation is frequently performed using popular methods such as Otsu’s between-class variance and Kapur’s entropy. Numerous researchers have used evolutionary algorithms to identify the best multilevel thresholds based on the above approaches using histogram. This paper uses the Energy Curve (EC) based thresholding method instead of the histogram. Chaotic Bidirectional Smell Agent Optimization with Adaptive Control Strategy (ChBSAOACS), a powerful evolutionary algorithm, is developed and employed in this paper to create and execute an effective method for multilevel thresholding segmentation of breast thermogram images based on energy curves. The proposed algorithm was tested for viability on standard breast thermogram images. All experimental data are examined quantitatively and qualitatively to verify the suggested method’s efficacy.

The satellite image segmentation is a key area for current research and numerous work has been done for exploration of this area. The nature inspired optimization algorithms are very promising with image segmentation techniques to provide a platform for processing of satellite images. In this paper a literature review of different nature based optimization algorithms such as modified artificial bee colony (MABC) algorithm, ABC algorithm, particle swarm optimization (PSO), Darwinian PSO, genetic algorithm (GA), Wind driven optimization (WDO) and cuckoo search(CS) using different objective functions has been discussed to find the optimized multilevel thresholds. These nature influenced optimization methods and their performances are compared using different objective functions for optimal multilevel thresholding. The comparative study shows that the MABC algorithm and different variants of CS algorithm are very strong and accurate in results generating using image segmentation. Both methods search multilevel thresholds very efficiently and correctly, and in MABC an improved bee’s search solution are used and in CS the cuckoo search solution are used.

Fractional order Darwinian particle swarm optimization for parameters identification of solar PV cells and modules

Evolutionary algorithms are used in many engineering applications for optimization of problems that are often difficult to solve using conventional methods. One such problem is image segmentation. This task is used for object (contour) extraction from images to create sensible representation of the image. There are many image segmentation and optimization methods. This work is focused on selected evolutionary optimization methods. Namely, particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, and differential evolution. Our image segmentation method is inspired in algorithm known as k-means. The optimization function from k-means algorithm is replaced by evolutionary technique. We compare original k-means algorithm with evolutionary approaches and we show that our evolutionary approaches easily outperform the classical approach.

Procedural Content Generation (PCG) has emerged as a powerful approach for automating game content creation, offering significant benefits in terms of cost reduction and time efficiency compared to traditional game design and development processes (Zhang, Zhang, & Huang, 2022). While Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have been widely used in PCG, alternative metaheuristic algorithms such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) have demonstrated their effectiveness in delivering high-quality solutions and efficient optimization capabilities across different problem domains (Amato, 2017). However, their application in PCG remains limited. I aim to evaluate the performance of PSO and ABC in map layout generation, challenging the conventional use of GAs. By comparing three metaheuristic algorithms (GA, ABC, and PSO) I seek to assess the effectiveness of these approaches in generating game levels and identify any obvious differences in their performance characteristics. Comprehensive experiments are conducted, applying GA, ABC, and PSO to a map layout generation. Metrics like convergence speed and content quality are used to evaluate the generated game content. My findings reveal that both ABC and PSO demonstrate advantages over traditional GA implementations when generating game levels, indicating their potential for enhancing PCG. In this presentation, I will share the results of comparing three metaheuristic algorithms (GA, PSO, and ABC) in map layout generation for game levels, emphasizing the potential benefits of leveraging diverse algorithmic approaches to create more captivating and immersive game worlds. Also, I will conclude with a call for further research in this area to expose new possibilities in content generation. By considering varied metaheuristic approaches, game developers can improve content generation techniques and create more captivating and interactive player experiences.

Trading strategies for image segmentation using multilevel thresholding aided with minimum cross entropy

A fast image segmentation method with multilevel threshold of two-dimensional entropy was proposed based on the firefly algorithm to overcome the large amount of calculation and long computing time.Firstly,the principle of two-dimensional entropy threshold segmentation was analyzed,and the single threshold segmentation of two-dimensional entropy was extended to multilevel threshold segmentation.Then,the bionic mechanism and searching optimization process of the firefly algorithm were analyzed,and the multilevel threshold segmentation method of two-dimensional entropy combined with firefly algorithm was proposed.Finally,typical image segmentation experiments by using the proposed method were performed and the results were compared with those of two-dimensional entropy exhaustive segmentation method and the multilevel threshold segmentation method of two-dimensional entropy based on Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO).Experimental results show that the speeds of the proposed method in single threshold segmentation,dual-threshold segmentation and thethree threshold segmentation are 3.91,1 040.32and 8 128.85times faster than those of the two-dimensional entropy exhaustive segmentation method respectively.Moreover,the threshold selection accuracy and running speed of the proposed method are both better than those of the multilevel threshold segmentation method of two-dimensional entropy based on PSO.Therefore,the fast image segmentation method with multilevel threshold of two-dimensional entropy based on firefly algorithm can quickly and efficiently resolve complex and multi-target image segmentation problems.

Multilevel threshold image segmentation with diffusion association slime mould algorithm and Renyi's entropy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Multilevel thresholding is a widely used image segmentation technique. However, multilevel thresholding becomes more and more computationally expensive as the number of thresholds increase. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate some suitable optimization technique to make it practical. In this article, a modification is proposed to the Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm and then it is applied to multilevel thresholding for image segmentation. Cross entropy is used as the objective function to select the optimal thresholds. A set of benchmark test images are used to evaluate the proposed technique. The Mean Structural SIMilarity (MSSIM) index is used to measure the quality of the segmented images. The results of the proposed technique are compared with the original MFO, PSO, BFO, and WOA. Experimental results and analysis suggest that the proposed technique outperforms other techniques in terms of segmentation quality images and stability. Moreover, computation time required for multilevel thresholding is also reduced to a manageable level.
