Multimedia big data computing and Internet of Things applications: A taxonomy and process model

To facilitate the development of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, numerous middleware protocols and APIs have been introduced. Such applications built atop reliable or unreliable protocols and they expose different characteristics. Additionally, with regard to the application context (e.g., emergency response operations), several Quality of Service (QoS) requirements must be satisfied. To study QoS in IoT applications, the provision of a generic performance analysis methodology is required. Queueing network models offer a simple modeling environment, which can be used to represent IoT interactions by combining multiple queueing model types for building queueing networks. The resulting networks can be used for performance analysis through analytical or simulation models. In this paper, we present several types of queueing models that represent different QoS settings of IoT interactions, such as intermittent mobile connectivity, message drop probabilities, message availability/validity and resource constrained devices. Using MobileJINQS, we simulate our models demonstrating the significant effect on response times and message success rates when varying QoS settings.

In the recent days, wide-ranging cellular devices and purchaser gadgets in the Internet of Things (IoT) have created immense multimedia information in different types of media (for example, content, pictures, video, and sound). Due to this, there is a great increase in the research challenges for creating strategies and tools in addressing Multimedia Big Data (MMBD) for future IoT. As the worldwide framework for the ongoing data society, IoT empowers progressed benefits by interconnecting (virtual as well as physical) things dependent on existing and advancing interoperable data and correspondence advancements. An immense measure of connected objects will be installed universally in a couple of years. In the meantime, the utilization of MMBD has been developing colossally since recent years, while organizations are rapidly getting on what they remain to pick up. Actually, these two advances are affecting and molding one another. In spite of the fact that they emerge from various application situations, MMBD can be together utilized with machine learning, AI, factual, and other progressed procedures, models, and techniques to investigate or locate the profound incentive behind the immense information originated from IoT. Actually, the registering knowledge, including transformative calculation, neural systems, and the fuzzy hypothesis, is relied upon to assume a vital job for these issues. It is as yet one of the most scorching and most challenging fields to create novel processing knowledge for the reasonable situations concerned with the MMBD for future IoT. In this paper, we focus on one of the most important research domains in MMBD IoT, Energy Conservation. IoT devices communicate through the wireless communication medium and are expected to transmit information whenever needed. The battery life of IoT devices is an important concern for researchers and device manufacturers. Many exhaustive efforts have been put by researchers in this area. Since most IoT devices are usually deployed in remote and hostile environments out of reach for human users, it may not be possible to charge and recharge batteries frequently. Moreover, in MMBD IoT applications, a large volume of multimedia traffic needs to be processed, which consumes precious network resources such as bandwidth and energy. Thus, devising protocols for conserving energy of IoT devices in such environments has become a very interesting topic of research. There are various ways to achieve energy conservation in the MMBD IoT environment. Some of the popular research inclinations are designing energy-efficient communication protocols, developing of mechanisms that enable IoT devices to self-generate, recycle, store and harvest energy, and modifying underlying protocol stack of communication technologies to support energy efficiency. Our paper mainly focuses on the investigation of existing technologies and mechanisms in the above domains. We first present the need for energy conservation briefly and then discuss the key points of existing solutions for saving energy in IoT communications. At the end of the paper, we summarize our findings to describe the advantages and limitations of existing mechanisms and provide insights into possible research directions.

The present spreading out of the Internet of Things (IoT) originated the realization of millions of IoT devices connected to the Internet. With the increase of allied devices, the gigantic multimedia big data (MMBD) vision is also gaining eminence and has been broadly acknowledged. MMBD management offers computation, exploration, storage, and control to resolve the QoS issues for multimedia data communications. However, it becomes challenging for multimedia systems to tackle the diverse multimedia‐enabled IoT settings including healthcare, traffic videos, automation, society parking images, and surveillance that produce a massive amount of big multimedia data to be processed and analyzed efficiently. There are several challenges in the existing structural design of the IoT‐enabled data management systems to handle MMBD including high‐volume storage and processing of data, data heterogeneity due to various multimedia sources, and intelligent decision‐making. In this article, an architecture is proposed to process and store MMBD efficiently in an IoT‐enabled environment. The proposed architecture is a layered architecture integrated with a parallel and distributed module to accomplish big data analytics for multimedia data. A preprocessing module is also integrated with the proposed architecture to prepare the MMBD and speed up the processing mechanism. The proposed system is realized and experimentally tested using real‐time multimedia big data sets from athentic sources that discloses the effectiveness of the proposed architecture.

SummaryIn recent years, applying Internet of Things (IoT) applications has significantly increased to facilitate and improve quality of human life activities in various fields such as healthcare, education, industry, economics, etc. The energy aware cloud‐edge computing paradigm has developed as a hybrid computing solution to provide IoT applications using available cloud service providers and fog nodes for the smart devices and mobile applications. Since the IoT applications are developed in the form of several IoT services with various quality of service (QoS) metrics which can deploy on the cloud‐edge providers with different resource capabilities, finding an efficient placement solution as one of challenging topics to be measured for IoT applications. The service placement issue arranges IoT applications on the cloud‐edge providers with various capabilities of atomic services though sufficient different QoS factors to support service level agreement (SLA) contracts. This paper presents a technical analysis on the cloud‐edge service placement approaches in IoT systems. The key point of this technical analysis is to identify substantial studies in the service placement approaches which need additional consideration to progress more efficient and effective placement strategies in IoT environments. In addition, a side‐by‐side taxonomy is proposed to categorize the relevant studies on cloud‐edge service placement approaches and algorithms. A statistical and technical analysis of reviewed existing approaches is provided, and evaluation factors and attributes are discussed. Finally, open issues and forthcoming challenges of service placement approaches are presented.

Fog Computing (FC) paradigm offers significant potential for hosting diverse delay-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, the limited resources of fog devices pose significant challenges for deploying multiple applications, particularly in heterogeneous and dynamic IoT scenarios, due to the absence of effective mechanisms for resource estimation and discovery. An efficient resource allocation strategy is crucial for meeting the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of IoT applications while enhancing overall system performance. Identifying the optimal allocation strategy for IoT applications with multiple QoS parameters is a complex and computationally intensive challenge, classified as an NP-complete problem. This paper proposes a Multi-Objective Optimization Algorithm (MOOA) for optimal resource allocation using the Osprey Optimization Algorithm (OOA) to efficiently allocate available resources. The proposed algorithm was evaluated against existing approaches, including the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), under varying task loads ranging from 100 to 500 tasks. The simulation results demonstrate significant performance improvements, including an average reduction in execution time by 12.45% compared to PSO and 22.97% compared to GA, response time by 32.57% compared to GA and 24.45% compared to PSO, and completion time by 44.39% compared to GA and 33.23% compared to PSO. These findings highlight the proposed algorithm’s ability to efficiently handle task allocation in dynamic FC environments and its potential to address complex QoS requirements in real-world IoT applications.

Internet of Things (IoT) applications are generally developed in a vertical manner, i.e., each IoT application is developed for a certain scenario which generally does not share data with IoT applications for recommendation services. This leads to an inefficient exploitation of other IoT service applications. In fact, such recommendation services can be achieved with the help of Social IoT (SIoT) by using data generated by various IoT applications. SIoT builds a profile of objects based on IoT applications data that can be exchanged with SIoT network for accessible to other IoT applications. In this manner, the SIoT network provides recommendation services for reusability of IoT applications' data among various IoT applications, as well as adapting IoT services according to users' needs which improve user experience. Additionally, the profiles built by a SIoT network can also help a single IoT application by looking for similar conditions that have been addressed in the past for the same IoT application. We propose a concept for exploiting the SIoT for recommendation services among various IoT applications with the help of a sample application scenario that highlights how the SIoT can help by providing recommendations. We also provide some implementation challenges for this concept.

Providing Internet of Things (IoT) environments with service level guarantee is a challenging task for improving IoT application usage experience. We specify in this paper an IoT architecture enabling an IoT Service Level Agreement (iSLA) achievement between an IoT Service Provider (IoT-SP) and an IoT Client (IoT-C). In order to guarantee the IoT applications’ requirements, Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms should be implemented within all the layers of the IoT architecture. Thus, we propose a specific mechanism for the lowest layer of our service level based IoT architecture (i.e., sensing layer). It is an adaptation of the IEEE 802.15.4 slotted CSMA/CA mechanism enabling to take into consideration the requirements of real-time IoT services. Our access method called QBAIoT (QoS based Access for IoT) extends IEEE 802.15.4 systems by creating a new contention access period for each specified traffic class in the iSLA. Furthermore, due to the huge number of IoT connected devices, self-configuring capability provisioning is necessary for limiting human intervention and total cost of ownership (TCO). Thus, we integrate a self-configuring capability to the QBAIoT access method by implementing the MAPE-K closed control loop within the IoT High Level Gateway (HL-Gw) of our proposed QoS based IoT architecture.

The correct implementation and behavior of Internet of Things (IoT) applications are seldom investigated in the literature. This paper shows how the simulation mechanism can be integrated well into an IoT application development platform for correct implementation and behavior investigation. We use an IoT application development platform called IoTtalk as an example to describe how the simulation mechanism called SimTalk can be built into this IoT platform. We first elaborate on how to implement the simulator for an input IoT device (a sensor). Then we describe how an output IoT device (an actuator) can be simulated by an animated simulator. We use a smart farm application to show how the simulated sensors are used for correct implementation. We use applications including interactive art (skeleton art and water dance) and the pendulum physics experiment as examples to illustrate how IoT application behavior investigation can be achieved in SimTalk. As the main outcome of this paper, the SimTalk simulation codes can be directly reused for real IoT applications. Furthermore, SimTalk is integrated well with an IoT application verification tool in order to formally verify the IoT application configuration. Such features have not been found in any IoT simulators in the world.

Internet of Things (IoT) has widely been accepted as a promising paradigm for connecting a large number of resource-constrained miniature sensor nodes that have the ability to sense the deployed environment. They have found their applications in various aspect of our daily lives. However, these nodes are mostly restricted to sense only the scalar data. Nowadays, multimedia sensor nodes are gaining significant attention due to their ability to collect scalar as well as multi-dimensional data. These nodes are considered as the foundation of Internet of Multimedia Things (IoMT) and are shaping the perception of IoT. Multimedia data have stringent requirements in terms of reliability, latency, storage, bandwidth, and Quality of Service (QoS). To provide seamless and interoperable communication in IoMT, the underlying protocol stacks need to fulfill these stringent requirements. However, the heterogeneous nature of multimedia sensors makes interoperability a challenging task to fulfill. To understand the challenges faced by seamless and interoperable communication in IoMT, we provide a comprehensive review of the existing protocol stacks of IoMT and analyze their feasibility for multimedia streaming applications. Data storage of multimedia applications is another area that requires immediate attention of the research community. For this purpose, we study cloud as an entity to facilitate multimedia applications of IoMT. The instances of multimedia cloud are analyzed and a number of shortcomings are identified that pave the way for edge computing in IoMT. Finally, we present a case study that shows the significance of our work. The case study portrays an in-home patient monitoring system with an interoperable communication among the connected multimedia streaming devices at home, and healthcare practitioners at hospital. The case study also highlights the importance of uninterrupted data storage and retrieval at the network edge and multimedia sensor nodes.

The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) applications has prompted the continuous increase of research efforts in recent years. In light of the diversified use cases and service requirements, the information freshness [or Age of Information (AoI)] of IoT data is key for latency-sensitive IoT applications (e.g., industrial automation and intelligent transportation) because stale information may lead to delayed responses and catastrophic outcomes. In addition, various types of IoT applications require the analytics of IoT data collected from their constituent IoT devices. While previous AoI-related works have analyzed or optimized the information freshness of various communication systems, the problem that the information cofreshness</i> [or Coage of Information (CoI)] of an IoT application is determined by the maximum AoI of the constituent IoT devices has been rarely investigated. In this article, we address the grant assignment and transmission scheduling (GATS) problem for IoT and formulate it as an integer linear program (ILP) to minimize a weighted sum of CoI. Due to the intractability of the original GATS problem, we transform it to an equivalent problem of the maximization of the number of the eliminated age blocks. Then, we propose the CoI-aware age block elimination (CABEL) algorithm in which information updates are selected progressively according to their coage efficiency (CE) values and prove that the achieved approximation factor depends on the relative service costs and uplink delays. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed solution can effectively perform information updates and utilize service budgets, thereby achieving low CoI compared with the existing solutions under various parameter settings.

With the advancement of computing technology, we are witnessing the dawn of a new era of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in which objects equipped with sensors, actuators and processing capabilities communicate with each other to serve a given goal. The IoT’s intrinsic nature, which uses heterogeneous devices, resources and different communication protocols, complicates IoT applications’ design, development, and validation. Reducing the complexity of building IoT applications is one of the current challenges in this area.To address this challenge, we focus on a model-driven approach to support IoT systems’ management and the development of IoT applications. In particular, we propose the FloWare approach and its toolchain, which combine Software Product Line and Flow-Based Programming paradigms to manage the complexity in the various stages of the IoT application development process. An automatic transformation procedure generates the final IoT application, an executable Node-RED flow, starting from a configuration of the designed Feature Models.KeywordsIoTModel-drivenFeature modelFlow-based programmingNode-RED

The concept of Internet-of-Things (IoT) emerged around two decades ago but has gained momentum during the last few years. The modern technology has infused this innovative paradigm on several scales but still lacks shadowing many aspects of our daily life. Several businesses have attempted its interjection in their processes, however, some of the features of IoT have been avoided by most of them due to its cryptic nature and requiring technical skills prior to its replete use. The development of IoT is well ahead of its need to be and linked to an inability of adopting its fast-paced changes along with the lack of strong business operational models. This paper contributes to the developing of a smart home where electrical appliances would react according to the environment while users would be able to control them through smart gadgets. The conventional setup of arranging and organising the electrical appliances is compared to the newly-developed, several patterns have been observed through which carbon footprints and electricity consumption could be reduced. The collected data has been analysed and it proves that IoT does not only helps save energy consumption but also to save the environment. This paper also highlights the challenges faced by consumers who are affected by the penetration of IoT into their lives along with benefits of infusing IoT applications. The overall theme of this paper is, therefore, to make the consumer understand the benefits of IoT applications into their lives using Arduino setup to control electrical home appliances as a benchmark.
