Abstract

This paper focuses onthe detection and segmentation of MultipleSclerosis (MS) lesions in magnetic resonance(MRI) brain images. To capture the complextissue spatial layout, a probabilistic modeltermed Constrained Gaussian Mixture Model (CGMM)is proposed based on a mixture of multiplespatially oriented Gaussians per tissue. Theintensity of a tissue is considered a globalparameter and is constrained, by aparameter-tying scheme, to be the same value forthe entire set of Gaussians that are related tothe same tissue. MS lesions are identified asoutlier Gaussian components and are grouped toform a new class in addition to the healthytissue classes. A probability-based curveevolution technique is used to refine thedelineation of lesion boundaries. The proposedCGMM-CE algorithm is used to segment 3D MRIbrain images with an arbitrary number ofchannels. The CGMM-CE algorithm is automatedand does not require an atlas for initializationor parameter learning. Experimental results onboth standard brain MRI simulation data and realdata indicate that the proposed methodoutperforms previously suggested approaches, especially for highly noisy data.
