Natural Semantics of Battle Management Languages

Aiming at improving the poor effect of data ontology semantic information query, based on the existing semantic retrieval and combined with natural semantic processing technology, a data ontology semantic information query method based on natural semantic understanding is proposed. The natural semantic pattern is used to define the corresponding data ontology extraction rules, and the synonyms of domain ontology are obtained from relevant data. Further, Jena reasoning is used, and the implicit knowledge is obtained by combining domain knowledge and custom reasoning rules. Based on the natural semantics, a word similarity algorithm is proposed to analyze the syntax and semantics of the natural semantic query input by users, and construct SPARQL query sentences to realize the natural semantic query. The accuracy deviation formula is proposed to measure the rationality of the sorting algorithm, which simplifies the semantic information query steps of the data ontology. Experiments show that this method can obtain semantic information and effectively improve the accuracy of semantic information of data ontology.

A formal executable semantics of a programming language has the necessary information to develop program debugging and reasoning techniques. In this paper we choose such a particular technique called program slicing and we introduce a generic algorithm which extracts a set of side-effects inducing constructs, directly from the formal executable semantics of a programming language. These constructs are further used to infer program slices, for given programs and specified slicing criteria. Our proposed approach improves on the parametrization of the language tools development because changes in the formal semantics are automatically carried out in the slicing procedure. We use the rewriting logic and the Maude system to implement a prototype and to test our technique.

UDL/I is a hardware design language for ASIC design developed in a Japanese LSI design language standardization project. A formal semantics of UDL/I is presented. There is no established way to define semantics of hardware design languages, because there is no general computation model for them. A definition method of formal semantics for UDL/I and semantics suitable for a standard language are developed. The basic idea is that the semantics of the language should be defined independently of simulators. The language provides an abstract model of hardware. The role of the language designer is to provide an abstract model of hardware which is natural and general for hardware designers and CAD engineers. Formal pattern languages are used in industry to communicate and analyse requirements, as they are said to be both machine-readable and intuitively understandable for humans. The questions arise to what extent this intuitive understanding of a pattern language is in agreement with its formal semantics and whether this understanding can be increased systematically. We present two consecutive empirical experiments to address these questions. The formal semantics serves as an objective judge on the intuitive understanding. Our experiments confirm the practical usefulness of HanforPL insofar the intuition matches the formal semantics in most practically relevant cases. They also reveal a number of edge cases where even a prior exposure to formal logic is not a guarantee for correct understanding. We present and validate systematic adjustments to the patterns, leading to several large increases in understandability but come at the cost of new, but less impactful ambiguities. We demonstrate how an inquiry on the alignment of the intuitive and formal semantics of a pattern language can help to understand and improve the language. While results regarding the understandability of HanforPL are favourable in commonly used cases, there is potential for improvement. The systematic adaption of patterns shows that small modifications may have large effects on the alignment of formal and intuitive semantics, and that modification must be considered with caution in the context of the respective pattern to avoid unintentionally adding new ambiguities. The main aim of this work is to evaluate whether Boolos’ semantics for second-order languages is model-theoretically equivalent to standard model-theoretic semantics. Such an equivalence result is, actually, directly proved in the “Appendix”. I argue that Boolos’ intent in developing such a semantics is not to avoid set-theoretic notions in favor of pluralities. It is, rather, to prevent that predicates, in the sense of functions, refer to classes of classes. Boolos’ formal semantics differs from a semantics of pluralities for Boolos’ plural reading of second-order quantifiers, for the notion of plurality is much more general, not only of that set, but also of class. In fact, by showing that a plurality is equivalent to sub-sets of a power set, the notion of plurality comes to suffer a loss of generality. Despite of this equivalence result, I maintain that Boolos’ formal semantics does not committ (directly) second-order languages (theories) to second-order entities (and to set theory), contrary to standard semantics. Further, such an equivalence result provides a rationale for many criticisms to Boolos’ formal semantics, in particular those by Resnik and Parsons against its alleged ontological innocence and on its Platonistic presupposition. The key set-theoretic notion involved in the equivalence proof is that of many-valued function. But, first, I will provide a clarification of the philosophical context and theoretical grounds of the genesis of Boolos’ formal semantics.

We describe several views of the semantics of a simple programming language as formal documents in the calculus of inductive constructions that can be verified by the Coq proof system. Covered aspects are natural semantics, denotational semantics, axiomatic semantics, and abstract interpretation. Descriptions as recursive functions are also provided whenever suitable, thus yielding a a verification condition generator and a static analyser that can be run inside the theorem prover for use in reflective proofs. Extraction of an interpreter from the denotational semantics is also described. All different aspects are formally proved sound with respect to the natural semantics specification.

We compare three specification frameworks for the operational semantics of programming languages, abstract state machines (ASMs) and the two incarnations of natural semantics, big-step and small-step semantics, with respect to two criteria: the range of imperative programming languages to which they are applicable and the way the program is used in the specifications and treated during the thereby defined execution. To reveal the fundamental differences between these three mechanisms, we investigate if there are automatic transformations between them. As a side effect, this leads to new insights concerning the classification of big-step and small-step semantics.

The programming language ALGOL 60 has been used to illustrate several different styles of formal semantic description. This paper identifies the main challenges in providing formal semantics for imperative programming languages and reviews the responses to these challenges in four relatively complete formal descriptions of ALGOL 60. The aim is to identify the key concepts rather than become distracted by the minutiae of notational conventions adopted by their authors. This paper also explores the historical reasons for the development of these descriptions in particular, and gives some general historical background of the groups involved (the IBM laboratories in Vienna and Hursley, and Oxford’s Programming Research Group).

Elements of Formal Semantics (EFS) has already been reviewed twice (Rett in Glossa 1(1):42, 2016; Erlewine in Comput Linguist 42(4):837–839, 2017). As well, the website for the work is accompanied by evaluative quotes by noted scholars. All are very positive concerning its clarity and its utility as an introduction to formal semantics for natural language. As I agree with these evaluations my interest in reiterating them in slightly different words is limited. So my reviews of the content chapters will be accompanied by a Reflections section consisting of my own reflections on the foundations of model theoretic semantics for natural language as laid out in EFS. The issues I address—alternate ways of accomplishing the tasks Winter treats—should not be included in an introductory work but they may be helpful for those who teach classes for which EFS is an appropriate text. They might also help with queries about the content of the text by those using it. I note that a mark of a clear text is that it allows the reader to reflect on its content not its presentation.

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in formalisms for representing uncertain information on the Semantic Web. This interest is triggered by the observation that knowledge on the web is not always crisp and we have to be able to deal with incomplete, inconsistent and vague information. The treatment of this kind of information requires new approaches for knowledge representation and reasoning on the web as existing Semantic Web languages are based on classical logic which is known to be inadequate for representing uncertainty in many cases. While different general approaches for extending Semantic Web languages with the ability to represent uncertainty are explored, we focus our attention on probabilistic approaches. We survey existing proposals for extending semantic web languages or formalisms underlying Semantic Web languages in terms of their expressive power, reasoning capabilities as well as their suitability for supporting typical tasks associated with the Semantic Web.

This paper proposes a method to formalize semantics. It makes the formal semantics more harmonious with compilation. This method is established on the basis of a temporal logic language, which is, on the one hand, a logic system, so its semantics is simple and easy to formalize and convenient to implement; on the other hand, an intermediate programming language, so the semantics of other higher languages can be mapped into it by means of rigorous transformation. To organize a kind of 2-1evel formal semantics in this way the compilation is constituted.

Isabelle is a generic meta-logical framework for implementing logical formalisms, and Isabelle/HOL is the specialization of Isabelle for HOL, which stands for Higher Order Logic. In programming language theory, formal semantics is the field concerned with the rigorous mathematical study of the meaning of programming languages. In this paper we develop a relational denotational semantics for a small imperative programming language and implement it as a theory in Isabelle/HOL. We give special attention to the specification of monotonic fix point functional for loops and provide non-trivial proofs of interesting lemmas and properties with the structured proof language Isar.

Modern database systems provide not only powerful data models but also complex query languages supporting powerful features such as the ability to create new database objects and invocation of arbitrary methods (possibly written in a third-party programming language).In this sense query languages have evolved into powerful programming languages. Surprisingly little work exists utilizing techniques from programming language research to specify and analyse these query languages. This paper provides a formal, high-level operational semantics for a complex-value OQL-like query language that can create fresh database objects, and invoke external methods. We define a type system for our query language and prove an important soundness property.We define a simple effect typing discipline to delimit the computational effects within our queries. We prove that this effect system is correct and show how it can be used to detect cases of non-determinism and to define correct query optimizations.

Formally verifying functional and security properties of a large-scale production operating system is highly desirable. However, it is challenging as such OSes are often written in multiple source languages that have no formal semantics - a prerequisite for formal reasoning. To avoid expensive formalization of the semantics of multiple high-level source languages, we present a lightweight and rigorous verification toolchain that verifies OS code at the binary level, targeting ARM machines. To reason about ARM instructions, we first translate the ARM Specification Language that describes the semantics of the ARMv8 ISA into the PVS7 theorem prover and verify the translation. We leverage the radare2 reverse engineering tool to decode ARM binaries into PVS7 and verify the translation. Our translation verification methodology is a lightweight formal validation technique that generates large-scale instruction emulation test lemmas whose proof obligations are automatically discharged. To demonstrate our verification methodology, we apply the technique on two OSes: Google's Zircon and a subset of Linux. We extract a set of 370 functions from these OSes, translate them into PVS7, and verify the correctness of the translation by automatically discharging hundreds of thousands of proof obligations and tests. This took 27.5 person-months to develop.

Language semantics that is formal and mathematically precise, is the essential prerequisite for the design of logics and calculi that permit automated reasoning about programs. The most popular approach to programming language semantics—small step operational semantics (SOS)—is not modular in the sense that it does not separate conceptual layers in the target language. SOS is also hard to relate formally to program logics and calculi. Minimalist semantic formalisms, such as automata, Petri nets, or \(\pi \)-calculus are inadequate for rich programming languages. We propose a new formal trace semantics for a concurrent, active objects language. It is designed with the explicit aim of being compatible with a sequent calculus for a program logic and has a strong model theoretic flavor. Our semantics separates sequential and object-local from concurrent computation: the former yields abstract traces which in a second stage are combined into global system behavior.
