Navigating the Windows Mail database

The production of huge amount of data and the emergence of cloud computing have introduced new requirements for data management. Many applications need to interact with several heterogeneous data stores depending on the type of data they have to manage: relational and NoSQL (i.e., document, graph, key-value, and column) data stores. Interacting with heterogeneous data models via different APIs and query languages imposes challenging tasks to the developers of multiple data stores applications. Indeed, the execution of complex queries over heterogeneous data models cannot, currently, be achieved in a declarative way as it is used to be with single data store application, and therefore requires extra implementation efforts. In this paper we propose a mediation based component to optimize and execute complex queries over multiple data stores in Cloud environments. This component is referred to as virtual data store (VDS). The key ingredients of our solution are (1) a simple global schema describing the different data sources and their relationships, (2) a cost model to evaluate the cost of the operations, (3) an inter data stores parallelism execution model, and (4) a dynamic programming based approach to generate optimal execution plan. Quantitative and qualitative experiments are conducted to validate our approach.

As a result of tremendous rise in internet usage like social media and forums, mail systems, scholarly and research articles, daily online transactions from multiple sources like health care systems, meteorological and environmental organizations etc., the data collected has shoot up exponentially. This vast collection of data, called Big Data, has caused the traditional tools incompetent for managing it from either of storage, computing or analytical perspective. There is an immense need of architectures, platforms, tools, techniques and algorithms to handle Big Data. The available technologies deal with two broad aspects related to Big Data that are Big Data Storage Management and Big Data Computing, focused to overcome various challenges such as scalability, faster processing speed, multiple format data processing, availability, faster response time and analytics etc. This paper reviews recent trends of storage and computing tools with their relative capabilities, limitations and environment they are suitable to work with.

The use of the Microsoft windows operating system as a basis for integrated security systems provides a pathway to lower development and training costs while increasing commercial hardware compatibility. However, the historical view of Windows as a high-overhead, low-stability operating system has tended to limit the number of Windows-based mission-critical automation systems relative to the more conventional embedded micro-controller or Linux-based approaches. This paper documents the use of the Windows operating system for mission critical control of an active denial security technology. The advantages offered by Windows are weighed alongside the risks. We examine specific technical risks to long-term application stability including memory leaks, page faults and stack pointer corruptions. The risks and benefits of using third-party software libraries to accelerate the development and implementation of control systems are evaluated. The trend towards the use of managed versus native code is examined along with its associated impact on application stability and testing methods. Specific counter-measures aimed at reducing the incidence of operating system instability and application fault are discussed including the use of memory analyzers, inter-locking application threads, state-based persistence recovery objects and watchdog timers. We detail some techniques for effectively employing these countermeasures toward the production of highly stable Windows-based control systems. We conclude by presenting the stability performance of a government-developed remotely operated weapon system during recent testing and qualification.

Determining the dynamic properties of vehicles under different road conditions is an important step in many areas, one of which is the expert practice in the investigation of road accidents. However, in a number of cases, up-to-date information on these properties, obtained for specific real road conditions and vehicles, is lacking. In this work, the application of GPS-based specialized system for data registration and storage is justified through studying some dynamic properties of different vehicles. The application of the system is considered. Based on the system, a methodology for obtaining up-to-date data, that are adequate to the road conditions, is proposed. The experiments were conducted with cars, motorcycles, bicycles and scooters. Quantitative data on the accelerations and the decelerations of the studied objects were experimentally obtained. The results justify and prove the application of the used GPS system for determining the dynamic properties of vehicles with increasing the quality and reliability of the research, as well as the accuracy of the data obtained. The results from the study can be also useful in the expert investigations of road accidents and in the analysis of the possibilities for their prevention.

This paper presents a review of tactile technologies for human–computer interactivity via touch interfaces, where touch force is measured as a third dimension of user input along with touch location. Until recently, tactile technologies for computing applications have detected only the location of a touch (or several touches simultaneously) with no additional information about the force or pressure the user imparts to the interface. Such additional input may open up new applications in force-enhanced gestures, for example the touch force may dictate the linewidth used in drawing software, or the speed of a scroll gesture may be increased with increasing applied force. Here we review the underlying physical principles behind several force sensitive touch technologies. The latest innovations by leading technology developers, only available in the patent literature, are also described and where public data exist the force-resistance behaviours of several key technologies are compared in terms of their sensitivity and range of response. The advantages and disadvantages of each technology are discussed, along with the current and possible future applications in consumer electronics. It is shown that the concept of pressure-sensitivity as an additional user input mechanism is fast gaining traction, with many implementations already found in commercial products. Furthermore, a study of the patent trends shows that this functionality may soon become commonplace in the new generation of consumer electronic devices.

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) have been very successful at managing structured data with well-defined schemas. Despite this, relational systems are generally not the first choice for management of data where schemas are not pre-defined or must be flexible in the face of variations and changes. Instead, No-SQL database systems supporting JSON are often selected to provide persistence to such applications. JSON is a light-weight and flexible semi-structured data format supporting constructs common in most programming languages. In this paper, we analyze the way in which requirements differ between management of relational data and management of JSON data. We present three architectural principles that facilitate a schema-less development style within an RDBMS so that RDBMS users can store, query, and index JSON data without requiring schemas. We show how these three principles can be applied to industry-leading RDBMS platforms, such as the Oracle RDBMS Server, with relatively little effort. Consequently, an RDBMS can unify the management of both relational data and JSON data in one platform and use SQL with an embedded JSON path language as a single declarative language to query both relational data and JSON data. This SQL/JSON approach offers significant benefits to application developers as they can use one product to manage both relational data and semi-structured flexible schema data.

Electronic mailing systems are the dominant communication systems in private and business matters. Public administrations deliver documents to citizens and businesses—subpoenas, legal verdicts, notifications, administrative penalties, and so forth. However, official activities are more strongly bound to legal regulations than in civil law. Delivery of crucial and personal documents raises the demand for qualified identification and non-repudiation services as featured by registered and certified mail in the paper world. Legal requirements for electronic delivery carried out by public administrations (eDelivery) cannot be fulfilled by standard mailing systems. Although the requirements for eDelivery systems may differ due to national legal regulations, this paper discusses common requirements and properties on an abstract level. Moreover, the author shows how these requirements have been addressed by introducing the Austrian eDelivery system for eGovernment applications.

A new mailing system, known as the Multi-Media Slide Presentation (MMSP), incorporating multimedia elements is proposed to allow the presenter to prepare a slide presentation and transmit it like an electronic mail (e-mail) to a distant place and offer the same presentation environment, without being physically present. The prototype for MMSP was developed on Microsoft Windows for the PC environment, enabling text, audio and pictures and application data to be embedded into frames that may be transmitted and received on the network running under Windows. The prototype conforms to the Microsoft Multimedia extension and uses Microsoft Mail Application Interface (MAPI) and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE). The prototype was tested successfully for generating slides, transmitting and receiving on the network as an electronic mail. This paper presents the implementation details of the proposed MMSP, including the limitations. The availability of larger bandwidth networks and various efficient data compression techniques will make the MMSP more efficient, fast and effective application for real-time based slide presentations.

This article discusses data security and controls, primarily in the context of data base management systems (DBMSs), with an emphasis on basic principles and mechanisms that have been successfully used by practitioners in actual products and systems. The general discussion does not focus on particular products, although a later section does review several products to illustrate previously discussed concepts. The discussion of data bases is limited specifically to relational DBMSs, which store data in relations that have specific mathematical properties. All examples given are in SQL. It is assumed that readers are familiar with rudimentary concepts of relational data bases and SQL. This article begins with a review of basic security objectives, followed by a discussion of access controls in the current generation of commercially available DBMSs. The problem of multilevel security is then introduced, including a review of techniques developed specifically for multilevel security.
