Network coding in multicore processors

Considering a wireless sensor network with optimal mobile sink track along which data are transmitted to the nodes, a fraction of nodes in the area of interest generate data packets and send them to the sink. Usually the single path routing is adopted in such scenarios which may cause unnecessary transmissions. We address the problem of how to collect these packets efficiently by using network coding technique. Network coding is a kind of in network computation which has many advantages over traditional routing, such as providing higher network throughput, using bandwidth efficiently and balancing the traffic. In this paper, we propose a data collection strategy by using network coding for efficient data collection in event driven WSNs and explore its performance through theoretical analysis. We present a strategy for network coding algorithm which can guarantee the successful decoding for all the encoded packets. Specifically, our numerical results show the decrease in the total number of transmissions by applying network coding than that by using the single path routing. Also numerical results indicate that the delivery packets rate is significantly improved as the increase of the link loss rate comparing network coding we adopt with single path routing.

Network coding has been proven with the capability to improve the network bandwidth efficiency for multicast communications. Streaming based IPTV services provided by network operators match the paradigm of using network coding. However, the major research works in the literature focus on the selection of network codes under given routing paths. Few research work jointly considers routing and network coding together to obtain survivable multicast routing and minimum bandwidth provision. In this paper, we investigate this new research topic and propose mathematical models that can be used to obtain an optimal routing for survivable multicast communications against any single link/node failure. To clarify the gain from applying network coding, we also made performance comparisons between the network-coding-based protection schemes and those without using network coding. We observe that the network coding scheme holds the best performance for all cases we had simulated. The trade-offs between the network protection schemes with and without using network coding are also identified in this paper.

Network coding is a promising enhancement of routing to improve network throughput and provide high reliability. It allows a node to generate output messages by encoding its received messages. Peer-to-peer networks are a perfect place to apply network coding due to two reasons: the topology of a peer-to-peer network is constructed arbitrarily, thus it is easy to tailor the topology to facilitate network coding; the nodes in a peer-to-peer network are end hosts which can perform more complex operations such as decoding and encoding than simply storing and forwarding messages. In this paper, we propose a scheme to apply network coding to peer-to-peer file sharing which employs a peer-to-peer network to distribute files resided in a web server or a file server. The scheme exploits a special type of network topology called combination network. It was proved that combination networks can achieve unbounded network coding gain measured by the ratio of network throughput with network coding to that without network coding. Our scheme encodes a file into multiple messages and divides peers into multiple groups with each group responsible for relaying one of the messages. The encoding scheme is designed to satisfy the property that any subset of the messages can be used to decode the original file as long as the size of the subset is sufficiently large. To meet this requirement, we first define a deterministic linear network coding scheme which satisfies the desired property, then we connect peers in the same group to flood the corresponding message, and connect peers in different groups to distribute messages for decoding. Moreover, the scheme can be readily extended to support link heterogeneity and topology awareness to further improve system performance in terms of throughput, reliability and link stress. Our simulation results show that the new scheme can achieve 15%–20% higher throughput than another peer-to-peer multicast system, Narada, which does not employ network coding. In addition, it achieves good reliability and robustness to link failure or churn.

In a packet erasure network environment, video streaming benefits from error control in two ways to achieve graceful degradation. The first approach is application-level (or the link-level) forward error-correction (FEC) to provide erasure protection. The second error control approach is error concealment at the decoder end to compensate lost packets. A large amount of research work has been done in the above two areas. More recently, network coding (NC) techniques have been proposed for efficient data multicast over networks. It was shown in our previous work that multicast video streaming benefits from NC for its throughput improvement. An algebraic model is given to analyze the performance in this work. By exploiting the linear combination of video packets along nodes in a network and the SVC video format, the system achieves path diversity automatically and enables efficient video delivery to heterogeneous receivers in packet erasure channels. The application of network coding can protect video packets against the erasure network environment. However, the rank defficiency problem of random linear network coding makes the error concealment inefficiently. It is shown by computer simulation that the proposed NC video multicast scheme enables heterogenous receiving according to their capacity constraints. But it needs special designing to improve the video transmission performance when applying network coding.

Video on Demand (VoD) streaming makes up an increasing portion of global IP traffic. Traditionally, data is served by content providers directly, putting a huge network load on the servers. We propose using our WebRTC-based protocols WebPeer and CodedWebPeer to create a P2P-assisted VoD streaming system with network coding. We introduce two metrics: network health to measure overall data saturation and network stability to show if the peers in the network are able to serve each other without the help of the server. We have implemented a testbed to emulate real-life network scenarios that includes a probabilistic model of peer behavior. We show through measurements that by applying network coding, network health is increased by up to 100% without changing the cache size or number of peers. Furthermore, network stability is achieved using up to half the cache compared to the uncoded approach, without increasing the servers load. Finally, to validate the scalability of our solution, we tested our protocols in a network with more than 100 tablets to deliver smooth video playback.

This paper proposes an encoding/decoding framework for achieving the optimal channel capacities of the two-user broadcast channel where each user (receiver) has the message targeted for the other user (receiver) as side information. Since the link qualities of the channels from the base station to the two users are different, their respective single-user non-broadcast channel capacities are also different. A goal is to simultaneously achieve/approach the single-user non-broadcast channel capacities of the two users with a single broadcast transmission by applying network coding. This is referred to as the rate-diverse wireless network coding problem. For this problem, this paper presents a capacity-achieving framework based on linear-structured nested lattice codes. The significance of the proposed framework, besides its theoretical optimality, is that it suggests a general design principle for linear rate-diverse wireless network coding going beyond the use of lattice codes. We refer to this design principle as the principle of virtual single-user channels . Guided by this design principle, we propose two implementations of our encoding/decoding framework using practical linear codes amenable to decoding with affordable complexities: the first implementation is based on Low Density Lattice Codes (LDLC) and the second implementation is based on Bit-interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM). These two implementations demonstrate the validity and performance advantage of our framework.

As more processing cores are integrated into one chip and feature size continues to shrink, the average access latency for remote nodes using directory-based coherence protocol becomes higher, which greatly impacts system performance. Previous techniques such as data replication and data migration optimize the performance of the requesting core, but offer little improvement for neighbor nodes. Other techniques such as in-transit optimization try to reduce latency at the cost of increased storage. This paper introduces hierarchical cache directory into CMP (chip multiprocessor), which divides CMP tiles into multiple regions hierarchically, and combines it with data replication. A new directory organization is proposed to record the share status within a region and assist the regional home to complete operation efficiently. Simulation results show that for a 16-core CMP, compared to traditional directory, hierarchical cache directory reduces average access latency by 9% and on-chip network traffic by 34% on average with less storage. Theoretical analyses show that for a 2 n × 2 n tiled CMP, the average access latency in hierarchical cache directory asymptotically approaches a function that is independent of n, hence the architecture is highly scalable.

The performance of microprocessors has increased exponentially for over 35 years. However, process technology challenges, chip power constraints, and difficulty in extracting instruction-level parallelism are conspiring to limit the performance of future individual processors. To address these limits, the computer industry has embraced chip multiprocessing (CMP), predominately in the form of multiple high-performance superscalar processors on the same die. We explore the trade-off between building CMPs from a few high-performance cores or building CMPs from a large number of lower-performance cores and argue that CMPs built from a larger number of lower-performance cores can provide better performance and performance/Watt on many commercial workloads. We examine two multi-threaded CMPs built using a large number of processor cores: Sun's Niagara and Niagara 2 processors. We also explore the programming issues for CMPs with large number of threads. The programming model for these CMPs is similar to the widely used programming model for symmetric multiprocessors (SMPs), but the greatly reduced costs associated with communication of data through the on-chip shared secondary cache allows for more fine-grain parallelism to be effectively exploited by the CMR Finally, we present performance comparisons between Sun's Niagara and more conventional dual-core processors built from large superscalar processor cores. For several key server workloads, Niagara shows significant performance and even more significant performance/Watt advantages over the CMPs built from traditional superscalar processors.

In recent years network coding has attracted significant attention in telecommunication. The benefits of network coding to a communication network include the increased throughput as well as secure data transmission. In this chapter, we investigate the advantages of applying network Coding in sensor networks for security purpose. In particular, the problem of constructing a secure unicast system is considered. Unlike previous wiretapping scenarios, where the threat is posed by external wiretappers. we approach the security from an internal angle: all nodes comply with the communication protocols yet are potential eavesdroppers and the eavesdroppers can cooperate with each other to decode the packets sent from the source node. Different from most existing research on network coding that designs the network coding scheme based on a given topology, we will consider the network topology design. We first try to find the transmission topology that is suitable for network coding in unicast system. Based on the topology, we use linear network coding scheme which is weakly secure. In this paper, we present results from a practical evaluation of network coding in a setup consisting of eight nodes deployed in a chain topology. With the tradition pure relaying, delay increases dramatically as the network gets congested, and here network coding helps to moderate this increase in delay, as well improving throughput. The practical evaluation shows that network coding provides up to a five-fold decrease in delay, while retaining the expected gain in throughput. To address an unecessary delay when using network coding in low-load scenarios, we propose and evaluate a scheme for adaptive buffering. With this, we show that the benefits from pure relaying can be combined with the improved performance from network coding. The software used to apply network coding and evaluate this in a practical network is made publicly available for further research and tests.

네트워크 코딩(Network Coding)은 통신망의 성능 향상에 도움을 줄 수 있으나 이의 소프트웨어적 구현은 부호화/복호화 단계에서 매우 큰 지연시간을 유발할 수 있어 이를 줄일 수 있는 병렬화된 구현이 필수적이라 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 랜덤 리니어 네트워크 코딩(Random Linear Network Coding)과 랜덤 리니어 네트워크 코딩의 단점을 보완하고자 최근 제안된 파이프라인 네트워크 코딩(Pipeline Network Coding)의 병렬처리 성능을 비교한다. 또한, 네트워크 코딩의 CPU에서의 병렬처리 기법과 GPGPU(General Purpose Graphics Processing Units)에서의 병렬처리 기법을 비교하여 네트워크 코딩의 사용 시 그 파라미터에 따라 적절한 병렬처리 기법을 선택할 필요성이 있음을 보여준다. Network coding has been shown to improve various performance metrics in network systems. However, if network coding is implemented as software a huge time delay may be incurred at encoding/decoding stage so it is imperative for network coding to be parallelized to reduce time delay when encoding/decoding. In this paper, we compare the performance of parallelized decoders for random linear network coding (RLC) and pipeline network coding (PNC), a recent development in order to alleviate problems of RLC. We also compare multi-threaded algorithms on multi-core CPUs and massively parallelized algorithms on GPGPU for PNC/RLC.

Exploring the vast microarchitectural design space of chip multiprocessors (CMPs) through the traditional approach of exhaustive simulations is impractical due to the long simulation times and its super-linear increase with core scaling. Kernel based statistical machine learning algorithms can potentially help predict multiple performance metrics with non-linear dependence on the CMP design parameters. In this paper, we describe and evaluate a machine learning framework that uses Kernel Canonical Correlation Analysis (KCCA) to predict the power dissipation and performance of CMPs. Specifically we focus on modeling the microarchitecture of a highly multithreaded CMP targeted towards packet processing. We use a cycle accurate CMP simulator to generate training samples required to build the model. Despite sampling only 0.016% of the design space we observe a median error of 6-10% in the KCCA predicted processor power dissipation and performance.

In this paper, we investigate parallel implementation techniques for network coding. It is known that network coding is useful for both wired and wireless networks and it also mitigates peer/piece selection problems in P2P file sharing systems. However, due to the decoding complexity of network coding, there have been concerns about adoption of network coding in practical network systems and to improve the decoding performance, the exploitation of parallelism has been proposed previously. In this paper, we argue that naive parallelization strategies of network coding may result in unbalanced workload distribution, and thus, limiting performance improvements. We further argue that a higher performance enhancement can be achieved through balanced partitioning methods in parallelized network coding and propose new parallelization techniques for network coding. Our experiments show that on a quad-core processor system, proposed algorithms exhibit up to 5.69 speedup which is better than the linear speedup with the influence of additional cache. Moreover, on an octal-core system, our algorithms even achieve speedup of 8.46 compared to a sequential network coding and 43.3 percent faster than an existing parallelized technique using 1 Mbytes data with 1,024 \times 1,024 coefficient matrix size.

Recently, Network coding has been proved to be the breakthrough in the research field of network and communication. It is an effective technique to increase network capacity and improve the robustness and reliability of networks. In this paper, there is application of network coding in wireless network. In order to improve the reliability and the throughput of wireless network, we do extensive research on network coding incorporated with the multicast communication in WLAN, the routing optimization in multi-hop network and the retransmission efficiency for wireless broadcast system, and focus on the protocol design and the theory for the performance analysis. On the basis of introduction on basic idea and method of network coding, we proposes a new physical layer network coding scheme for two-way relay channel model based on a belief propagation approach. Then we make performance analysis through numerical simulation.

With the standard approach for establishing multicast connections over a network, network nodes are utilized to forward and duplicate the packets received over the incoming links. Recently, there has been a significant interest in a novel paradigm of network coding. Network coding generalizes the traditional routing approach by allowing the network nodes to generate new packets by performing algebraic operations on packets received over the incoming links. It has been shown that network coding can increase the throughput of multicast communication. In this paper, we explore the benefits of network coding for improving the routing characteristics of VLSI designs. We demonstrate that when data has to be routed across the IC, it is often beneficial to perform network coding. Initial results demonstrate that network coding can result in a healthy reduction in wire length, wire area, interconnect power as well as the active area associated with the interconnects. This comes at a small delay penalty.
