Network function virtualization scheduling with transmission delay optimization

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is a paradigm that virtualizes traditional network functions and instantiates Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) as software instances separate from hardware appliances. Service Chaining (SC), seen as one of the major NFV use cases, provides customized services to users by concatenating VNFs. A VNF placement model for SC that relaxes the visit order constraints of requested VNFs has been considered. Relaxing the VNF visit order constraints reduces the number of VNFs which need to be placed in the network. However, since the model does not permit any loop within an SC path, the efficiency of utilization of computation resources deteriorates in some topologies. This paper proposes a VNF placement model for SC which minimizes the cost for placing VNFs and utilizing link capacity while allowing both relaxation of VNF visit order constraints and configuration of SC paths including loops. The proposed model determines routes of requested SC paths, which can have loops, by introducing a logical layered network generated from an original physical network. This model is formulated as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem. A heuristic algorithm is introduced for the case that the ILP problem is not tractable. Simulation results show that the proposed model provides SC paths with smaller cost compared to the conventional model.

Network availability and service continuity are major concerns for network operators to provide reliable communication services for Internet of Things (IoT), which are particularly challenging to achieve in virtualized network slicing environment where network services are exposed to the failure risks of both software (virtual network function (VNF) instances) and hardware (physical nodes). In general, the redundancy-based VNF backup solutions are used to improve the reliability of virtualized network slices. However, backup VNFs require the same amount of resources as the primary VNFs, which will result in high-resource cost. In this article, we propose a joint VNF partition and hybrid backup scheme for VNF orchestration, backup and mapping, whose aim is to construct the reliability-enhanced and delay-guaranteed network slices at minimum cost. Specifically, the VNF partition method divides a single VNF into multiple thinner VNFs with lower processing capacity and is expected to enhance the reliability of network slices with less additional resources. The hybrid backup scheme includes both onsite and offsite backup forms. Then, considering the time-varying network environment and IoT service requirements, we formulate the VNF orchestration, backup and mapping as a dynamic mixed integer linear programming (DMILP) problem, and model the dynamic problem as a Markov decision process (MDP). In view of the large action space of the formulated MDP, we propose a multiagent deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach with an action space reduction strategy to achieve the dynamic VNF orchestration, backup and mapping solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint VNF partition and hybrid backup scheme can obtain superior delay and reliability performance with low-network cost.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are transforming Data Center (DC), Telecom, and enterprise networking. The programmability offered by P4 enables SDN to be more protocol-independent and flexible. Data Centers are increasingly adopting SmartNICs (sNICs) to accelerate packet processing that can be leveraged to support packet processing pipelines and custom Network Functions (NFs). However, there are several challenges in integrating and deploying P4 based SDN control as well as host and sNIC-based programmable NFs. These include configuration and management of the data plane components (Host and sNIC P4 switches) for the SDN control plane and effective utilization of data plane resources. P4NFV addresses these concerns and provides a unified P4 switch abstraction framework to simplify the SDN control plane, reducing management complexities, and leveraging a host-local SDN Agent to improve the overall resource utilization. The SDN agent considers the network-wide, host, and sNIC specific capabilities and constraints. Based on workload and traffic characteristics, P4NFV determines the partitioning of the P4 tables and optimal placement of NFs (P4 actions) to minimize the overall delay and maximize resource utilization. P4NFV uses Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) based optimization formulation and achieves up to 2. 5X increase in system capacity while minimizing the delay experienced by flows. P4NFV considers the number of packet exchanges, flow size, and state dependency to minimize the delay imposed by data transmission over PCI Express interface.

Software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) together form a promising paradigm that enables the slicing of heterogeneous network resources for agile and efficient service customization. Among other techniques, virtual network function (VNF) mapping and scheduling are crucial to the deployment of SDN/NFV-enabled network services. In this paper, to enhance the performance of service provisioning, dynamic VNF mapping and scheduling are jointly investigated. Specifically, to achieve load balancing with QoS guarantee, we first formulate the VNF mapping and scheduling problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). We then propose a two-stage online algorithm to address the NP-hardness of the MILP. In particular, when new service arrives, we map and schedule the VNFs on a service function chain (SFC) by greedily minimizing the waiting time of VNFs. If the delay requirement cannot be satisfied after the first stage, a delay-aware rescheduling scheme is triggered, in which selected existing VNFs are remapped and rescheduled. The proposed dynamic approach achieves flexible function placement and increases service acceptance ratio. Simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Network function virtualization (NFV) utilizes IT virtualization technology to realize the functions of various network devices and realize the decoupling of hardware and software functions. Typically, a service request specifies the virtual network functions (VNFs) it needs and the order between them. A network flow needs to traverse a set of sequential VNFs called a service function chain (SFC). Although SFC can increase the flexibility of service orchestration to meet the needs of different users, network providers face many challenges due to the need to ensure service reliability and some constraints. Therefore, how orchestrating SFC and designing a suitable network architecture is a critical issue in this field at present. We propose an efficient network layer-based SFC orchestration method, called SFC-hierarchical orchestration (SFC-HO). Our method separates virtual and physical networks into layers and computes the availability of resources in each layer. We filter the VNFs of each layer and deploy them to the physical layer that meets the greatest benefit. To this end, we formulate the problem as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem to minimize the total deployment cost. In order to further optimize the layering strategy, we innovatively use the Benders decomposition method to decompose the SFC-HO problem into two sub-problems, which are the hierarchical mapping problem of VNFs and the routing problem between nodes. We propose two algorithms for the two problems respectively. The simulation results show that compared with the SFC orchestration process in the traditional network model. Our research can effectively improve the reliability of the SFC, reduce the delay of the routing process, and effectively reduce the cost consumption. Our research effectively solves the problem of difficult service orchestration for operators in the face of diverse service demands and a large number of service requests.

Network function virtualization represents a revolutionary approach to network service deployment. This software-oriented approach for virtual network functions (VNFs) deployment enables more flexible and dynamic network services to meet diversified demands. To minimize the execution time of all VNFs in service function chains, VNF scheduling must be addressed. In this paper, we improve upon the flexible job-shop model by introducing the process of bandwidth allocation. First, we propose a multilayer encoding genetic algorithm to solve the VNF scheduling model. In addition, we design a distributed method for bandwidth allocation based on the Nash bargaining solution. Finally, by combining the genetic algorithm with distributed bandwidth allocation, we present a heuristic algorithm that solves the VNF scheduling problem in one stage. Using a multilayer encoding genetic algorithm, we simplify the constraints of the VNF scheduling problem and reduce its time complexity. At the same time, our Nash game solution refines the granularity of bandwidth allocation to further reduce the transmission delay between VNFs. The effectiveness of our proposed heuristic algorithm is verified through numerical evaluation. Compared with existing approaches, our method exhibits shorter scheduling time and reduces CPU time by 45% in simulated scenarios.

The discovery process of OPC Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) is well defined but lacks flexibility when implemented in large networks. While the standard provides concepts for local and global discovery services, the core assumption is that all clients and servers are aware of the discovery server(s) in the network. This dependency is a barrier for Plug-and-Play installations and is overcome by self announces via the multicast Domain Name System (mDNS), however, this scales badly with an increasing number of network nodes and deployed servers. We propose a discovery approach based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), that installs a plug-and-play mechanism for global OPC-UA discovery in modern virtualized networks.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) has promoted the implementation of network functions from expensive hardwares to software middleboxes. These software middleboxes, also called Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), are executed on switch-connected servers. Efficiently deploying such VNFs on servers is challenging because the traffic rate of flows must be fully processed by their requested VNFs when they reach destinations, and the deployed positions of VNFs are restricted by the server capacity. In addition, each network function offers non-uniform VNF models (types) with different configurations of processing volumes and costs. This paper focuses on minimizing the total cost of deploying VNFs for providing a specific network function to all flows in tree-structured networks. First, we prove the NP-hardness of non-uniform VNF deployment in a tree topology and propose a dynamic programming based solution with a pseudo-polynomial time complexity. Then we narrow it down to three simplified cases by focusing on either uniform VNFs or the linear line topology. Specifically, three algorithms are introduced: an improved dynamic programming based algorithm for deploying uniform VNFs in a tree topology, a performance-guaranteed algorithm for deploying non-uniform VNFs in a linear line topology, and an optimal greedy algorithm for deploying uniform VNFs in a linear line topology. Additionally, we generalize our approach to a case of deploying a service chain, which consists of multiple network functions applied to flows in a specific order. We propose two solutions: one is optimal but time-consuming while another is heuristic but efficient. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate our algorithms.

5G networks represent a paradigm shift from their 4G predecessors, engineered to cater to the burgeoning demands of densely populated areas and the high data throughput requirements of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart city infrastructures. Beyond enhancing fundamental network attributes such as reliability, availability, and security, 5G introduces architectural innovations to accommodate these advanced needs. This paper delves into the architectural nuances of 5G, focusing primarily on the Standalone (SA) deployment method, distinguished by its utilization of network slicing. This approach leverages cutting-edge virtual network technologies, including Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), to forge virtual network slices tailored to diverse consumer needs. Such customization is imperative for meeting the expansive and varied connectivity demands characteristic of 5G networks.To navigate the complexities of 5G architecture, this study advocates for the adoption of Reference Architectures (RAs), which provide a high-level abstraction framework for dissecting and understanding intricate systems. By proposing a model that outlines the standalone architecture of 5G networks, our research lays the groundwork for evolving this model into a comprehensive RA for 5G. This foundational work is instrumental in equipping system designers with the tools necessary for generalizing systems to manage design and deployment challenges effectively, as well as the heterogeneity inherent in system components. Additionally, our proposed model facilitates the establishment of a common vocabulary, promoting a coherent understanding of component interactions and offering a unified system perspective. Ultimately, this paper contributes a pivotal model that not only enhances our comprehension of 5G network architecture but also paves the way for future advancements in network design and deployment, promising to significantly impact the development of smart cities and IoT ecosystems.Keywords: 5G, 5G architecture, Reference architecture, patterns. The design, management, and operation of network infrastructure have evolved during the last few years, leveraging on innovative technologies and architectures. With such a huge trend, due to the flexibility and significant economic potential of these technologies, software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) are emerging as the most indispensable key catalysers. SDN/NFV enhancing the infrastructure agility, thus network operators and service providers are able to program their own network functions (e.g., gateways, routers, load balancers) on vendor-independent hardware substrate. One of the most important considerations in NFV deployment is how to allocate the virtual resources that are needed to provide flexible virtual network services in an NFV-based network infrastructure. Thus, the most important prerequisite for NFV deployment is achieved fast, scalable and dynamic composition and allocation of networks functions (NFs) to implement network services (NSs). We have proposed a revised RA algorithm that integrates embedding and scheduling of virtual network functions (VNFs) simultaneously. In this paper, performance evaluation of the revised RA algorithm is performed and the proposed algorithm is applied more effectively in NFV environment where the demand for resources is flexible and concentrated.

Fault tolerant placement of stateful VNFs and dynamic fault recovery in cloud networks

Attack-aware Security Function Management

The integration of software-defined networking (S-DN) and network function virtualization (NFV) is expected to achieve the convenient management and flexible deployment of various sophisticated network functions, and support user applications with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). In this paper, we jointly study route selection and network function placement problem. To stress the service sensitivity on delay, we formulate an optimization problem which minimizes the total end-to-end delay subject to data transmission, service requirement and various available resource constraints. As the formulated problem is an NP-hard problem, which cannot be solved easily, we transform it into three subproblems, i.e., route selection subproblem, network function placement subproblem and resource sharing subproblem of user flows, and solve the three subproblems by applying the K-shortest paths algorithm, Kuhn-Munkres (K-M) algorithm and Lagrangian dual method, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

We present a general approach to the FPGA technology mapping problem that applies to any logic block composed of lookup tables (LUTs) and can yield optimal solutions. The connections between LUTs of a logic block are modeled by virtual switches, which define a set of multiple-LUT blocks (MLBs) called an MLB-basis. We identify the MLB-bases for various commercial logic blocks. Given a n MLB-basis, we formulate FPGA mapping as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem to achieve both the generality and the optimality objectives. We solve the MILP models using a general-purpose MILP solver, and present the results of mapping some ISCAS.85 benchmark circuits with a variety of commercial FPGAs. Circuits of a few hundred gates can be mapped in reasonable time using the MILP approach directly. Larger circuits can be handled by partitioning them prior to technology mapping. We show that optimal or provably near-optimal solutions can be obtained for the large ISCAS.85 benchmark circuits using partitions defined by their high-level functions.

SDN-NFV Security'18 offers a unique opportunity by bringing together researchers from academic, industry, as well as government agencies to discuss security challenges faced by two emerging networking paradigms, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). SDN-NFV Security'18 solicits the submission of original unpublished ideas in 6-page long papers and 4-page short papers that address the latest practices, experiences, and lessons learned on SDN and NFV security. The call for papers attracted submissions from Europe and the United States. SDN-NFV Security'18 accepted 3 full papers be presented in this workshop, after a rigorous review process (at least 4 reviews for each paper) and discussion phase. In addition, we have invited 8 papers (5 full papers and 3 short papers) from domain experts to be presented in the workshop.
