Next Generation Applications and Services for Ultra-fast Broadband

Many scientific workflow applications are driven by simulation generated data, or data collected from sensors or instruments, and the processing of the data is commonly done at a different location from where the data is stored. Moving large quantities of data among different locations is thus a fr equently invoked process in scientific workflow applications. These data transfers often have high quality requirements on the network services, especially when the application requires steering from human interaction. Advanced networks such as hybrid networks make it feasible for high level applications to request network paths and service provisioning. However, current workflow applications tune the execution quality neglecting network resources, and by selecting only optimal software services and computing resources. Including network services in the resource scheduling adds an extra dimension for workflow applications to optimize the runtime performance. In this paper we present a system called NEtwork aware Workflow QoS Planner (NEWQoSPlanner) to complement existing workflow systems on selecting network resources in the context of workflow composition, scheduling and execution when advanced network services are available.

The quality of the network services has so far rarely been considered in composing and executing scientific workflows. Currently, scientific applications tune the execution quality of workflows neglecting network resources, and by selecting only optimal software services and computing resources. One reason is that IP-based networks provide few possibilities for workflow systems to manage the service quality, and limit or prevent bandwidth reservation or network paths selection. We see nonetheless a strong need from scientific applications, and network operators, to include the network quality management in the workflow systems. In this position paper, we discuss our vision on this issue and propose an agent based solution to include network resources in the loop of workflow composition, scheduling and execution when advanced network services are available. Our approach is conducted in the context of the CineGrid project.

A great challenge for telecommunications providers is to translate revolutionary advances in switching, transmission, and signaling technologies into advanced network services, failure transparency, high transmission quality, and affordable prices. The companies and government agencies that provide international telecommunications services face diverse expectations from their customers, differences in regulatory environments, and a multitude of equipment choices. Hence, a service provider's globalization strategy will become a key to its overall success. Substantial disparities exist among providers in the development of their national telecommunications infrastructures and in their political, economic, and regulatory environments. Therefore, distinct network-evolution strategies will emerge for each such service provider. This paper surveys a variety of possible evolution strategies for an international network and their effect on network design.

6POWER is a project funded by the European Commission Information Society Technologies Program, unique in the sense of working in several key fields of next generation networks: power line communications, quality of service, broadband and IPv6. The main goal of the project is to contribute to ensuring affordable broadband access and the deployment of IPv6 in Europe, as stated in the conclusion of the presidency from the Barcelona European Summit. Towards this target, the project is researching native support of IPv6 and other related protocols or advanced network services over broadband PLC. The project also looks into adapt several next generation applications (including audio and video streaming) and the network deployment, to be validated through the involvement of user groups and international trials.

QoS guaranteed optical network technologies, such as GE-PON, digital ROF, RPR and MPLS/GMPLS, for fixed and mobile broadband services are presented. Network management for multi-layer networks and resource management for advanced high-quality network services are also presented.

In addition to call set-up messages, the common channel signaling (CCS) network will transport primarily the advanced intelligent network (AIN) and other service-associated transaction messages. To deploy new services, and to maintain the quality of existing services; the CCS network capacity needs to be well-managed. The impact of AIN services on the CCS network is analyzed. The analysis takes into consideration AIN service-specific information which includes service configuration, penetration rate, and call flow. This results in a CCS traffic forecasting method which makes AIN service planning and CCS network capacity management much more accurate and effective than a previous method. The previous method assumed that CCS traffic would grow in proportion to that of the message network. Our results show that, with AIN services, traffic growth of the CCS network can be much higher than that of the message network. This applies in general to all CCS linksets, and is most remarkable for the A linksets connecting SCPs.

Significant progress has been made in the design and development of Grid middleware which, in its present form, is founded on Web services technologies. However, we argue that present‐day Grid middleware is severely limited in supporting projected next‐generation applications which will involve pervasive and heterogeneous networked infrastructures, and advanced services such as collaborative distributed visualization. In this paper we discuss a new Grid middleware framework that features (i) support for advanced network services based on the novel concept of pluggable overlay networks, (ii) an architectural framework for constructing bespoke Grid middleware platforms in terms of ‘middleware domains’ such as extensible interaction types and resource discovery. We believe that such features will become increasingly essential with the emergence of next‐generation e‐Science applications. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The author defines service completion time (SCT), a measure parallel to the POTS (plain old telephone system) call-setup time. SCT will be used to evaluate AIN (advance intelligent network) services. This proposed SCT model takes into account new characteristics and new call patterns introduced by AIN services and can be used to analyze these services from both the user's and the network's perspective. How components of SCT can be allocated to network elements is illustrated.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>

This paper presents a reference implementation of an Elastic IP and Security Group service using the OpenFlow protocol. The implementation is the first to present integration of OpenFlow within a virtual machine provisioning engine and an API for enabling such services. In this paper the OpenNebula system is used. The Elastic IP and Security Groups services are similar to the Amazon EC2 services and present a compatible Query API implemented by OpenNebula. The core of the implementation relies on the integration of an OpenFlow controller (NOX) with the EC2 server. Flow rules can be inserted in the OpenFlow controller using the EC2 API. These rules are then used by Open vSwitch bridges on the underlying hypervisor to manage network traffic. The reference implementation presented opens the door for more advanced cloud networking services that leverage principles from software defined networking including virtual private cloud, virtual data center spanning multiple availability zones, as well as seamless migration over wide are networks.

Within the RACE EuroBridge project efforts are underway to provide a toolkit and a unified system architecture to support designers and providers of advanced multimedia network services. The approaches taken to service specification by the Intelligent Network (IN) community and the RACE Open Services Architecture (ROSA) project are examined. The applicability of these techniques to the specification and design of multimedia services to be hosted on the EuroBridge Service Platform is investigated, and the ROSA approach is applied to a simple video-conference specification. The authors outline how it can result in a complete design that can be implemented on the EuroBridge Service Platform. >

As the focus of networking research shifts from raw performance to the delivery of advanced network services, there is a growing need for open-platform systems for extensible networking research. The Applied Research Laboratory at Washington University in Saint Louis has developed a flexible network services platform (NSP) to meet this need. The NSP provides an extensible platform for prototyping next-generation network services and applications. The paper describes the design of a system-on-chip packet processor for the NSP which performs all core packet processing functions, including segmentation and reassembly, packet classification, route lookup, and queue management. Targeted to a commercial configurable logic device, the system is designed to support gigabit links and switch fabrics with a 2:1 speed advantage. We provide resource consumption results for each component of the packet processor design.

Network services based on distributed components, which provide advanced network services with lower cost by assigning and reusing useful components running on remote nodes, are attracting increasing attention. In this service, when a component fails, a component that has the same function running on another node can be substituted for it. On the other hand, there are three kinds of failures in network services; a software failure at a component, a hardware failure at a node, and a failure of the physical network. We propose a new method to identify a failure in network services, which determines not only a failure at the application level but also in the network layer by collecting a small number of messages via multiple overlay networks.

Advanced Communications, Technology and Services, known simply as ACTS, is one of the specific programmes of the “Fourth Framework Programme of European Community activities in the field of research and technological development and demonstration (1994–1998)” [1]. It provides the main focus of the European Unions research effort to accelerate deployment of advanced communications infrastructures and services, and is complemented by extensive European research in the areas of information technology and telematics. The stated objectives of ACTS are to “develop advanced communication systems and services for economic development and social cohesion within Europe, taking account of the rapid evolution of technologies, the changing regulatory situation and opportunities for development of advanced transeuropean networks and services”. Within ACTS, the emphasis of the work has shifted from the exploration of fundamental concepts and detailed system engineering, as it had been in earlier programs such as RACE (Research and development in Advanced Communication technologies for Europe), to issues relating to implementation of advanced systems and generic services, and applications which demonstrate the potential use of advanced communications in Europe. A key feature of the ACTS program is that the research be undertaken in the context of real-world trials.KeywordsField TrialSaturable AbsorberTiming JitterFibre LossOrder DispersionThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Part 1, “The Role of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) providing connectivity and advanced network services to Virtual Communities in collaborative R&E projects. CUDI: The Mexican Case”, provides a general introduction to NRENs and explains the case of the Mexican NREN, its current infrastructure and policy status by 2015, and proposes actions to implement Article 213 of the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law to strengthen CUDI and e-infrastructures. This paper, describes how CUDI, throughout its 15 years of existence, has supported its members in their participation in different R&E collaborative projects using the NREN connected to High Performance Computing Distributed Systems (HPCDS), hardware and software tools and even remote instruments to implement different e-science applications by Virtual Communities (VCs). It extracts the positive aspects of previous collaborative R&E projects and identifies opportunities necessary to build the sustainable future Mexican NREN. That is, a robust national advanced network infrastructure with seamless, large scale, high-speed, low-latency characteristics aimed to accelerate scientific and education discovery on identified R&E collaborative projects using e-infrastructures for the short term (2016–2020).
