Totally acyclic complexes
In this paper, we introduce and study left (right) [Formula: see text]-semihereditary rings over any associative ring, and these rings are exactly [Formula: see text]-semihereditary rings defined by Mahdou and Tamekkante provided that [Formula: see text] is a commutative ring. Some new characterizations of left [Formula: see text]-semihereditary rings are given. Applications go in three directions. The first is to give a sufficient condition when a finitely presented right [Formula: see text]-module is Gorenstein flat if and only if it is Gorenstein projective provided that [Formula: see text] is left coherent. The second is to investigate the relationships between Gorenstein flat modules and direct limits of finitely presented Gorenstein projective modules. The third is to obtain some new characterizations of semihereditary rings, [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] rings and [Formula: see text] rings.

It is well known that a polynomial [Formula: see text] over a commutative ring [Formula: see text] with identity is a zero-divisor in [Formula: see text] if and only if [Formula: see text] has a non-zero annihilator in the base ring, where [Formula: see text] is the polynomial ring with indeterminate [Formula: see text] over [Formula: see text]. But this result fails in non-commutative rings and in the case of formal power series ring. In this paper, we consider the problem of determining some annihilator properties of the formal power series ring [Formula: see text] over an associative non-commutative ring [Formula: see text]. We investigate relations between power series-wise McCoy property and other standard ring-theoretic properties. In this context, we consider right zip rings, right strongly [Formula: see text] rings and rings with right Property [Formula: see text]. We give a generalization (in the case of non-commutative ring) of a classical results related to the annihilator of formal power series rings over the commutative Noetherian rings. We also give a partial answer, in the case of formal power series ring, to the question posed in [1 Question, p. 16].

We prove that each almost local-global semihereditary ring R has the stacked bases property and is almost Bézout. More precisely, if M is a finitely presented module, its torsion part tM is a direct sum of cyclic modules where the family of annihilators is an ascending chain of invertible ideals. These ideals are invariants of M. Moreover, M/tM is a projective module which is isomorphic to a direct sum of finitely generated ideals. These ideals allow us to define a finitely generated ideal whose isomorphism class is an invariant of M. The idempotents and the positive integers defined by the rank of M/tM are invariants of M too. It follows that each semihereditary ring of Krull-dimension one or of finite character, in particular each hereditary ring, has the stacked base property. These results were already proved for Prüfer domains by Brewer, Katz, Klinger, Levy, and Ullery. It is also shown that every semihereditary Bézout ring of countable character is an elementary divisor ring.

Let R R be a commutative ring with identity 1 ≠ 0 1 \ne 0 and let A A be a nonzero ideal of R R . A problem of current interest is to relate the notions of “projective ideal", “flat ideal” and “multiplication ideal". In this note we prove two results which show that the maximal ideals containing the annihilator of A A can play an important role in determining the relationship between these concepts. As a consequence we are able to prove that a finitely generated multiplication ideal in a semi-quasi-local ring is principal, that a finitely generated flat ideal having only a finite number of minimal prime divisors is projective and that for Noetherian rings or semihereditary rings, finitely generated multiplication ideals with zero annihilator are invertible.

Read moreOn Generalized Reed–Solomon Codes Over Commutative and Noncommutative Rings
In this paper, we study generalized Reed-Solomon codes (GRS codes) over commutative and noncommutative rings, we show that the classical Welch-Berlekamp and Guruswami-Sudan decoding algorithms still hold in this context, and we investigate their complexities. Under some hypothesis, the study of noncommutative GRS codes over finite rings leads to the fact that GRS codes over commutative rings have better parameters than their noncommutative counterparts. Also, GRS codes over finite fields have better parameters than their commutative rings counterparts. But we also show that given a unique decoding algorithm for a GRS code over a finite field, there exists a unique decoding algorithm for a GRS code over a truncated power series ring with a better asymptotic complexity. Moreover, we generalize a lifting decoding scheme to obtain new unique and list decoding algorithms designed to work when the base ring is, for example, a Galois ring or a truncated power series ring or the ring of square matrices over the latter ring.

We characterize Ding modules and complexes over Ding-Chen rings. We show that, over a Ding-Chen ring $R$, the Ding projective (respectively, Ding injective, respectively, Ding flat) $R$-modules coincide with the Gorenstein projective (respectively, Gorenstein injective, respectively, Gorenstein flat) modules, which, in turn, are noth\-ing more than modules appearing as a cycle of an exact complex of projective (respectively, injective, respectively, flat) modules. We prove a similar characterization for chain complexes of $R$-modules: a complex~$X$ is Ding projective (respectively, Ding injective, respectively, Ding flat) if and only if each component $X_n$ is Ding projective (respectively, Ding injective, respectively, Ding flat). Along the way, we generalize some results of Stovicek and Bravo, Gillespie and Hovey to obtain other interesting corollaries. For example, we show that, over any Noetherian ring, any exact chain complex with Gorenstein injective components must have all cotorsion cycle modules, that is, $Ext ^1_R(F,Z_nI) = 0$ for any such complex $I$ and flat module $F$. On the other hand, over any coherent ring, the cycles of any exact complex $P$ with projective components must satisfy $Ext ^1_R(Z_nP,A) = 0$ for any absolutely pure module~$A$.

In this paper, we introduce the concept of S‐‐ideals in both commutative and noncommutative rings. For a commutative ring R and a multiplicatively closed subset S, we show that many properties of ‐ideals apply to S‐‐ideals and examine their characteristics in various ring constructions, such as homomorphic image rings, quotient rings, cartesian product rings, polynomial rings, power series rings, idealization rings, and amalgamation rings. In noncommutative rings, where S is an m‐system, we define right S‐‐ideals. We demonstrate the equivalence of S‐‐ideals and right S‐‐ideals in commutative rings with identity and provide examples to illustrate the connections between right S‐prime ideals and ‐ideals.

<p>Let $ N $ be a left $ R $-module with the endomorphism ring $ S = \text{End}(_{R}N) $. Given two cardinal numbers $ \alpha $ and $ \beta $ and a matrix $ A\in S^{\beta\times\alpha} $, $ N $ is called flat relative to $ A $ in case, for each $ x\in l_{N^{(\beta)}}(A) = \{u\in N^{(\beta)} \mid uA = 0\} $, there are a positive integer $ k $, $ y\in N^{k} $ and a $ k\times \beta $ row-finite matrix $ C $ over $ S $ such that $ CA = 0 $ and $ x = yC $. It is shown that $ N_{S} $ is flat relative to a matrix $ A $ if and only if $ l_{N^{(\beta)}}(A) $ is generated by $ N $. $ S $ is called left coherent relative to $ A $ if Ker$ (_{S}S^{(\beta)}\to _{S}S^{(\beta)}A) $ is finitely generated. It is shown that $ S $ is left coherent relative to $ A $ if and only if Hom$ _{R}(N, l_{N^{n}}(A)) $ is a finitely generated left $ S $-module if and only if $ l_{N^{n}}(A) $ has an add$ (N) $-precover (add$ (N) $ denotes the category of all direct summands of finite direct sums of copies of $ _{R}N $). Regarding applications, new necessary and sufficient conditions for epic (monic, having the unique mapping property) add$ (N) $-precovers of $ l_{N^{(\beta)}}(A) $ are investigated. A left R-module M is called almost F-injective, if every R-homomorphism from a finitely presented left ideal to M extends to a homomorphism of R to M. A right R-module V is said to be almost flat, if for every finitely presented left ideal I, the canonical map V ⊗ I → V ⊗R is monic. A ring R is called left almost semihereditary, if every finitely presented left ideal of R is projective. A ring R is said to be left almost regular, if every finitely presented left ideal of R is a direct summand of RR. We observe some characterizations and properties of almost F-injective modules and almost flat modules. Using the concepts of almost F-injectivity and almost flatness of modules, we present some characterizations of left coherent rings, left almost semihereditary rings, and left almost regular rings.

Sum of two nilpotent elements in a ring may not be nilpotent in general, but for commutative rings this sum is nilpotent. In between commutative and non-commutative rings there are several types of rings in which this property holds. For instance, reduced, NI, AI (or IFP), 2-primal, reversible and symmetric, etc. We may term these types of rings as nearby commutative rings (in short NC-rings). In this work we have studied properties and various characterizations of such rings as well as rngs. As applications, we have investigated some commutativity conditions by involving semi-projective-Morita-contexts and right Ck-Goldie rings.

Below a special class of not necessarily associative or commutative rings A A is considered which is characterized by the property that A A has no nonzero nilpotent element and that a product of elements of A A which is equal to zero remains equal to zero no matter how its factors are associated. It is shown that ( A , ⩽ ) (A, \leqslant ) is a partially ordered set where x ⩽ y x \leqslant y if and only if x y = x 2 xy = {x^2} . Also it is shown that ( A , ⩽ ) (A, \leqslant ) is infinitely distributive, i.e., r sup x i = sup r x i r\sup {x_i} = \sup r{x_i} . Finally, based on Zorn’s lemma it is shown that A A is isomorphic to a subdirect product of not necessarily associative or commutative rings without zero divisors.

Every module over an Iwanaga–Gorenstein ring has a Gorenstein flat cover [13] (however, only a few nontrivial examples are known). Integral group rings over polycyclic-by-finite groups are Iwanaga–Gorenstein [10] and so their modules have such covers. In particular, modules over integral group rings of finite groups have these covers. In this article we initiate a study of these covers over these group rings. To do so we study the so-called Gorenstein cotorsion modules, i.e. the modules that split under Gorenstein flat modules. When the ring is ℤ, these are just the usual cotorsion modules. Harrison [16] gave a complete characterization of torsion free cotorsion ℤ-modules. We show that with appropriate modifications Harrison's results carry over to integral group rings ℤG when G is finite. So we classify the Gorenstein cotorsion modules which are also Gorenstein flat over these ℤG. Using these results we classify modules that can be the kernels of Gorenstein flat covers of integral group rings of finite groups. In so doing we necessarily give examples of such covers. We use the tools we develop to associate an integer invariant n with every finite group G and prime p. We show 1≤n≤|G : P| where P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G and gives some indication of the significance of this invariant. We also use the results of the paper to describe the co-Galois groups associated to the Gorenstein flat cover of a ℤG-module.
